Chaplain’s MessageBy Rev. Graham Patterson, Chaplain

The Gospel in SongThe Word of God has always been communicated in word and song, poetry and prose. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is universal, but has always been expressed in local and national cultures. We have ethnic musical styles: European American, African American and Hispanic American, and age-group musical tastes. When I served as a pastor in Richmond, the older members liked the old Presbyterian hymnal, while the younger folks favored the new praise songs.

Last month, when our beloved Keswick resident Dot Phillips died (she was from the country music capital), we celebrated her life and east Tennessee roots by singing gospel songs with such gospel greats as Tennessee Ernie Ford, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

In this month of November, we are going to continue to celebrate the Southern Gospel tradition with more great artists, including our own Larry Vaught, Sr., Keswick #213. We will be taking time out from “talking programs” to enjoy these glorious “singing programs.” Warm up your voices for a spiritual treat. Feel free to bring your favorite CDs to share with us and expand our musical horizons.
