It’s almost twenty years nowsince her beloved husband, racehorse owner and trainerClaude Lilley died, but hiswidow Daphne retains herlove of horses and the racingscene. At the age of 87 Daphne hasrecently bought anotheryearling filly, named Ambala -a reminder to her of happychildhood days spent in India.“I am getting on a bit now, but Ihave never lost my passion forracehorses and it has given meplenty of highs and lows,” shesaid at her Duffield Home.Daphne used to live on DuffieldBank the location of Claude’s Milford Stud.A well known sportsmanClaude was also a player andPresident of Duffield CricketClub where Daphne has beenPatron for many years.Claude’s most famous horsewas Pretendre and Daphne,long-standing ROA memberrecalled the heartbreak of anarrow Derby defeat. In an interview with TimRichards in a recent edition ofThoroughtbred Owner andBreeder Daphne was asked:What was your reaction afterbeing beaten a whisker in theDerby when Pretendre, in thecolours of your late husbandClaude Lilley, went down by aneck to Charlottown in 1966?
I was very sorry indeed. If you are well beaten you areinclined to accept it moreeasily. I realise that people in racingexperience similardisappointments every day ofthe week, but to have been sonarrowly beaten, and to knowfull well that you might havehad a better chance of winning, was a bit of an ordeal.
Lester Piggott had expressedhimself keen to ridePretendre, but your trainerSir Jack Jarvis remainedloyal to his young stablejockey Paul Cook. WouldLester have made a difference?
Sam Armstrong (Lester’sfather-in-law) approached myhusband after Pretendre hadwon the Observer Gold Cup tosay Lester would like the ride.Naturally, my husband wasonly too happy to think that wewould have Lester on board. After all, Pretendre was winterfavourite for the Derby. I do think that if Lester hadridden him he would have won,as Lester always seemed topossess that magic trick. But, having said that, PaulCook did ride him when he wonthe King Edward VII Stakes atRoyal Ascot afterwards, so hedid get some compensation forEpsom. Jack Jarvis took such great careof our horse; he was so afraidhe would be nobbled. This was in the days beforesophisticated burglar alarms. Before the Derby he fixed up asystem with a fishing linebetween Pretendre’s box andhis bedroom, so if anyone hadentered Pretendre’s box duringthe night Jack would have beenalerted.
Is it true you had to go to thecinema to see a replay of theDerby because there was solittle television coverage inthose days?
Yes. I remember it was on thenewsreel. We had to sit through theChelsea Flower Show beforethey got to the Derby. It was then that it hit homehow desperately close it hadbeen. We certainly saw more of therace in the cinema than we hadin all the excitement on theracecourse.
There was consolation whenyou bred Snow Knight to winthe 1974 Derby. Was it disappointing hewasn’t carrying your colours?
It was in a way. Every year we picked out whatwe thought were the bestyearlings to go into training. We sold the rest. When we decided to send thisparticular Firestreak colt to thesales, ‘Mac’ Nelson, trainerPeter Nelson’s wife, who usedto buy their yearlings, approached my husband to askhim what was wrong with thehorse and why were we sellingit. My husband insisted there wasnothing wrong and to prove itsaid if Mrs Nelson bought himhe would be happy to keep ahalf share.
She duly bought Snow Knightand we were very relaxed in theknowledge that we would havehim in training with Peter, onlyto discover later that the newCanadian owner wanted to keep100% of the horse for himself. So, yes, it was a shame, havingcome so close to retaining halfof him, that we weren’t part-owners when he won the Derby.
How involved were you withpedigrees and the breedingwhen you and your husbandowned Milford Stud?
In the days when my husbandwas disposing of older mares orbuying new ones, Tattersalls didnot include the progeny in theircatalogues, so it was my job toresearch breeding records of themares my husband wasinterested in. I used to spend hours goingthrough the stud books. My husband started the stud inDerbyshire by buying the AgaKhan’s cast-off mares in foal tostallions he would never havebeen able to afford, therebyacquiring some of the bestbloodlines possible, going rightback to Phalaris and Nearco.
Do you still study pedigrees?
Not really, because I am not as

au fait with the performances ofmodern stallions as I used to be.Since we sold the stud 20 yearsago I haven’t really hadanything to do with thebreeding side.
What is your involvement inracing these days?
Owning one horse and hoping itcan do the best it can. And that responsibilitycurrently rests with Convallaria,a six-year-old Cape Cross marewho was Geoff Wragg’s lastever winner before he retired. She is now in training withChris Wall. I have certainly had some funwith her but I can afford to haveonly one horse in training at atime. I do remember Jack Jarvis, withwhom we trained for some 25years, apologising to myhusband for having to increasehis training fees from £14 aweek to £16! In those days we would haveabout six horses in training.
What made you choose ChrisWall as trainer of Convallariawhen Geoff Wragg retired?
Geoff recommended him.I have been to Chris’s yard onlytwice since he took overConvallaria in November, as Isold my house in Newmarketand don’t get there as often as Iused to.
Do you still enjoy a day at theraces?
I do, but not has much as I usedto, because I can’t walk veryfar. I suppose you could say I amlazy, but how can one resist theexcellent television coverage?I can see every meeting justsitting at home, though I dorealise that is not very goodbusiness for the racecourses.
You are the longest servingmember of the RacehorseOwners Association. How
long have you been amember?
I would say since 1947, when Imarried my husband, who hadjoined in 1945.
Why have you stayed with theROA so long and what are theadvantages of being amember?
I am a loyal person who doesn’tchop and change. I trained with the Wragg yard, first Harry and then his sonGeoff, for 47 years, and ifGeoff hadn’t retired I’d still bewith him. Being a member of the ROAyou receive a racecourse passthat enables you to go racing
every day, even though it mighthappen to be Ayr one day andBrighton the next. There is also a camaraderieamongst members, whichmakes it fun. As the years have gone by Ithink the ROA has successfullybroadened its horizons andmoved with the times.
You must have seen enormouschanges in the sport. What, inyour view, has been for thebetter?
That’s debatable. I’m sure one big advantage fortrainers these days is being ableto enter horses much closer tothe race.In earlier days they used to
have to enter three weeks inadvance; now it is within daysand in some of the big earlyclosing races they can evenmake supplementary entries. At my age I tend to live in thepast and I found racing in thepast more enjoyable than I dotoday; you could move aroundmore easily then. There weren’t the seethingcrowds you get now.
And for the worse?
People walking through theenclosures with plastic mugs ofbeer is pretty unpleasant, youconstantly find yourself indanger of having beer sloppedall over you, even at RoyalAscot.I am afraid the changes at thenew Ascot are for the worse. The new layout might attractmore people to the races, but Idon’t like it.
Do you think the coverage ofracing is good, on televisionand in the papers?
It is first class. I watch most of the meetingsand you always know they areall available on television.I particularly like ClareBalding, who acquitted herselfso well presenting Royal Ascotthis year after her operation.
Where do you get yourbiggest thrill from racingthese days?
On television, particularlywatching the Classics and, ofcourse, a horse like Sea theStars.
Daphne is getting good reportsabout her recently acquired fillyAmbala from her trainer ChrisWall. And maybe, just maybe, shewill get some consolation forthat heartbreaking, so closeDerby defeat if Ambala couldmanage to win the Oaks. What a comeback that wouldbe.
Daphne as she is today... a familiar figure in the village.

I AM AMOLE, LIVE IN AHOLE AND WORK LIKE HELLMost people have noqualms about openingtheir fridge. Most peopledon’t have cause to worry. Imagine my surprise oneday when I opened it tofind a little, shiny, blackfurry mole spreadeagledon a side plate – armsstretched out and its littlepink nose just reaching theedge.“The kids always bring methings!” was my (nowretired) art teacher husbandDave’s excuse and he wasright – including a dead Jayand a Victorian stuffed fox. I admit I was intrigued bythe mole as I had neverreally seen one close upbefore and only hadchildhood memories of Moleand Ratty from Wind in theWillows. His coat was silky and softand his pink front feet, splayed and clawed as theywere, obviously equippedfor digging. The children were equallyinterested. My next encounter waswhen we were camping. I was trying to sleep on mylilo which was resting on thethick, clear plastic sheetspread on the grass whichformed the floor of the tent. When I lifted up my bed andshone my torch, the“tap!tap!tap!” that waskeeping me awake was thepink snout of a mole hittingthe plastic! It was obviously having ahard time working out whythe sky had suddenlybecome hard and waspopping up above groundevery now and then as hetraversed the field. Not having a pristine lawn athome, I don’t wage war butam still intrigued by thesetiny mammals, whosemolehills are all over theMillennium Meadow. Moles (Talpa europa) areusually between 12 -18 cmlong and weigh between 60 -130gms.
Living mostly underground, they eat earthworms andinsects using their verysharp teeth and find theirprey by sensing itsmovement and smell via itsalmost naked pink nose andthe hairs on its tail. Their eyes can only detectlight but their ears are holescovered in a thin layer ofskin which provide excellenthearing. The mole’s broad head andcylindrical body are coveredin special hair -each onethicker at the centre than theends - which allows theanimal to move freely in anydirection along itsunderground tunnels. These tunnels are in severallayers with some near thesurface and deeper ones forfeeding and breeding.
They store food by bitingearthworms to paralyse themor by decapitating them. The large front feet aresplayed with sharp clawsfor digging and it has smallback legs similar to a mouse. An individual can shift 4kg(10lbs) of earth in 20minutes.They sleep and work in fourhour shifts and have to eatover half their body weightin prey per day to stay aliveand to provide the energy todig the average of 18m(20yds) of tunnel per day! Thanks to the structure oftheir bones and muscles amole can project a lateralforce when digging theequivalent of 32 times itsown body weight. They breed once per yearand have a lifespan of aboutfour years. No wonder a collective termfor moles is “a labour”!There are a number ofsuperstitions around them.
They were toasted by theJacobites as “the littlegentlemen in black velvet”because they brought aboutthe death of their swornenemy, King William. In February 1702 he was
thrown from his horse whilstriding at Hampton Courtafter it stumbled over amolehill and the King
subsequently died on March 8th.The present Queen has herown Mole Controller whotraps moles by RoyalWarrant at Sandringham. According to the old beliefs,he should carry a pair ofmole’s front feet in hispocket to ward off aches, pains and cramp or sprinklemole’s blood on his warts –should he have any!So, unsightly, annoying, andsometimes dangerous ,molehills are evidence of ahealthy mole population anda good indicator of plenty ofearthworms and good soil. And they do work hard!!!

ROLE OF THE CLERK / COUNCILLORS
It has been noted that confusion sometimes arisesbetween the respective roles of the Parish Clerk

decisions, and takes instructions from the Council asa body.
The Clerk provides administrative support andprofessional advice to the Council, and implements

community.Individual Councillors are elected for a four year
term and the next election will take place in May orJune 2011.
