SABER AND CONOCER

both verbs mean to know but in different ways

saber: sé, sabes, sabe, sabemos, sabéis, saben

conocer: conozco, conoces, conoce, conocemos, conocéis, conocen

they have different uses

Conozco a María, el amor de mi vida,

pero ella ni sabe mi nombre. ¡Ay, ay ay!

EL USO DE SABER Y CONOCER

Saber means to know facts, information and to know how to do something: skills & abilities.

Sé dónde vive Inés. Ella sabe tocar el piano.

Conocer means to be acquainted with or familiar with persons, places, or things.

Conozco a Carmen. Ella conoce la ciudad de San José.

Quiero conocer a Arturo Sandaval.

Él conoce bien la música Jazz de los años 50.

SABER VS. CONOCER

Se usa Saber con:

1. Infinitivos

2. Que, qué, dónde, si, cuando, cuánto, quién, etc.

3. Hechos, datos, información específica

Se usa Conocer con:

1. personas (+ A personal)

2. Lugares

3. Conceptos generales

Additional yo-irregular verbs

Salir is usually followed by a preposition:

Salen del gimnasio. (They head out FROM the gym.) Salen para la oficina. (They head out TO the office.) Salen a comer. (They head out IN ORDER to eat.) (used with verbs only)

Salen con sus amigos. (They head out WITH their friends.)

When hacer is used in a question, it does not necessarily require a form of hacer in the answer. This is also true in English:

–¿Qué haces normalmente por la tarde? (What do you do normally in the afternoon?)

–Voy a la biblioteca, hago la tarea y después, trabajo en la librería.(I go to the library, I do homework….etc.)

It’s like the English: to be + -ing (present participle)

Spanish: estar + -ndo (present participle)

Elena está estudiando para un examen.Ana está comiendo galletas.

-ando estudiando-iendo comiendo-iendo escribiendo

stem +ending = present participle

UNLIKE ENGLISH, THE SPANISH PRESENT PROGRESSIVE IS USED ONLY TO DESCRIBE WHAT IS HAPPENING

RIGHT NOW:

En la foto, los perros están jugando con el dinosaurio

Ahora están jugando con la marmota

LOS VERBOS DE -IR (LOS FEOS) QUE TIENEN CAMBIO EN LA RAÍZ

Stem-changing "Ir" verbs continue to stem-change in the participle with a small difference:

O-->UE stem-changers change from O--> U

E-->IE and E-->I stem-changers both change from E->I.

Pedir (i,i)  pidiendo

LOS VERBOS DE -ER/-IR ENDING IN TWO VOWELS

will replace the weak (poodle) “i“ with a (german shepherd) “y" in the participle.

Spanish doesn’t permit three vowels in a row with an unaccented “i” in the middle!

Ser + adjective

to indicate what the subject is like (inherent to the person, place, or thing) Es alto, moreno, simpático y muy inteligente.

Therefore, ser is the only option with adjectives that can only express inherent qualitiesSantiago es inteligente y trabajador. Santiago está inteligente y trabajador.

Estar + adjective

to indicate a STATE of being:

the physical, mental or emotional state

Ella está un poco enferma.

Estar, on the other hand, is the only option with adjectives that can only express states

Santiago está bien/ mal/ cansado, contento.Santiago es bien/ mal/ cansado, contentoo.
