f Is it q Fort or a' Camp'?"~e By Ruth Hammond.. . .

There ,was no rillleral. no last rites. no c;:han~ for 8 finalfarewell and itlcavos many of us sad. Death is like that.~happening quicJdy without any warnin$. teavins ",S alone withemotions needing to be I'CkaScd.. but dlls.was not death; DOw i ..seems it mipl be much worse than death. if that is possible.

You ask what could posSibly cause these deep feelings? NODCother..Jhan die loss of our own Fort SianlOll." The -secluded Fortnestled safely away from the harsh winters "clod sultry·sunlmers.Tho quiet Port Stanton which prOVided '. baven B"nd "hope of abrighter future for the families of .the clients who lived ~ere COr

"most of Iheirlivcs. The peaceful Fort Stanton which was homefor hundreds of mercftilnt marines suffering from thc drcad~disease TB. The beautiful Fort. Stanton. the center' of activity forall of Uncoln Countr. through most of two separate centuries.

Yes. FoI't Stanton s still there. only now the slale is calling itCamp Sierra Blanca. Barricades bloc;k the.roads into the Fortand No T~passing signs have been posted. The buildings havebeen renamed with a single letter insleadof the collage namesthat have been used for years and years. The Fort remains but1:he essence that has meant so much to many olos is now gone.

Not baving .t;lCCCSS to Fort Stanton is understandable bQt forthe slate to lake away. the Dame Fort Stanton is, unthinkable. The slab; said it would use Fort Stanton for wonien prisoners-'.not eliminate Fort Stanton~ The state sai~ the women prisonersat FOf1 Stanton could help preserve the faeilty, not change itfrom a Fort to a mere Camp. The Slate has said it Would domany things but changing of the ~ame from ·Port, Stanton toCamp Sierra Blanca is ,not emly unthinkable. it is dcv.stating.

Does 8n"one at the slate level care about prcseJ:ving history? If they do It certainly isn't evident, Chan,in, 19th century placenames is DOt preservation. it isa form 0 elimination. That sortol thing happens regularly in foreign countries but should neverhappen here in the United States and most definitely not here ;n ~Lincoln County. It would make about as much sense to chansethe name of Santa Fe to Johnsonville or Garysburg. How manypeople living in New Mexico would agree to that name chan~1

. Making promises and breaking those promises seems 1,0 bethe standard for governor Johnson and his selcct staff. Now that·same group is apparendy responsible for depriving an entirearea of. one of ilS most precious assets. Not only have. we lostaccess to our Fort Stanton. the state has taken away ill> name.

Il seems that now we have two Camp Sierra BJancas. Onewill be for juveniles while the other one will be for femaleprisoners. There has been no explanation as to how the statemtends to distinguish between the two facilities. Maybe one willbe camp Sierra Blanca One- and the other will be Camp SierraBlanca 'Two. Then again maybe one will be Camp SIerra BlancaJuVeniles and the other wilt be Camp Sierra Blanca Females. One other optIon might be' for both facilites to be Camp' SierraBlanca but then it would appear both adult female prisqpers andjuveniles are being housed 10 the same facility which e~ld be a·violation of lbe' way prisons are operated. But then again thestale has a way of doing thin,s its way. ·not the correct way.

If the state wanted to dothmgs thecor~tway. then the stateWOuld have "kept the promises made mstead or breaking them:. Ifthe state wanted to do things the correct way then the stalewould not be in the process of changing the name of the-Fort. Itwould be nice if the stale cared. butth~ stale doesn't care at al~.

We do care about doing the correct thing and we -care aboutFort Stanton..' The stale can·t.chanIJe our fcclings about FortStainon regardless of what name it IS called. Fort Stanton willcontinue· to live on forever in our minds and in our h~arts.
