ELECTROSTATICS 2019

Electrostatics 2019 is organised by the Dielectrics & Electrostatics Group of the Institute of Physics and continues the International Conference series on Electrostatics, which takes place in the United Kingdom every four years. The conference will be held in the city of Manchester, the UK’s second city and birthplace of the industrial revolution.

Bill Bright Memorial Lecture• Professor GR Mitchell (Politécnico de Leiria)

Electrospinning: principles, practice and possibilities

Invited Speakers• Dr Habil C Helling (Director, Centre for Exoplanet

Science, University of St Andrews) Lightning on other planets

• Professor MP Hughes (University of Surrey) Dielectrophoresis

Dielectrics 2019For the first time, Electrostatics 2019 and Dielectrics 2019 will be co-located. The final session of Electrostatics 2019 will be combined with the first session of Dielectrics 2019 with papers that are relevant to both subject areas.

Invited speaker for joint session:• Professor S Rowland (Power & Energy Division,

The University of Manchester) The nature of electrical tree growth in polymeric insulation

In its 66-year history, the conference has been held at a number of venues, but this will be the first time in Manchester. In a way it is Electrostatics coming home. Two of the founders of what was then called the Static Electrification Group were scientists based in Manchester, Dr N Gibson and Dr PSH Henry.

From the early days, Electrostatics has always been a truly international conference. Even in 1953 and 1967, when travel was not so easy, there were participants from Canada, France, Germany, Japan and USA. By 1971 at the third conference, there were also participants from Austria, Hong Kong, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.

Today, international participation is wider than ever, as is the range of subjects that are encompassed within the conference. The conference series was started with a desire to understand the fundamentals

of electrostatic charging, and to explain and control electrostatic phenomena found in industry. There is still much research in these areas, which always form a welcome part of the conference. Electrostatic phenomena in our environment and in environments beyond our planet are the subjects of fascinating and globally important research. The application of electrostatics in the development of new materials and new methods of fabrication is equally exciting. So too are the many applications in biology and medicine, environmental and agricultural protection and energy generation.

Electrostatics 2019 will provide the perfect forum for scientists and engineers from around the world to meet and discuss advances in all these areas. Whether professor or student, industry leader or factory engineer, Electrostatics 2019 warmly welcomes all.
