Ceramics, Southern Africa 1
Dear Members,This year has gone so quickly it is hard to image that there are only 4 months un6l December. We have enjoyed some excellent workshops , held a fantas6c Regional exhibi6on and are now moving towards the crème de la crème of all exhibi6ons in South Africa. Our Na6onal Exhibi6on in Cape Town.
Remember that Cape Town has been declared the Design Capital of the World for 2014 and that Ceramics SA Western Cape will host the Corobrik (they are our main sponsors) Na6onal Exhibi6on in the Great Cellar at the Alphen estate in Constan6a opening 16th November. What a venue and a big thank you to Ralph Johnson Chairperson of Western Cape Associa6on and his commiRee for all their hard work in puSng this togetherWe have organized a photographic workshop for our members to learn how to take photos and will also try and get a photographer to take photos of your work for the Na6onal if you require. We are trying to keep costs down for you and are busy nego6a6ng with a few professional photographers.
Magdalene Odundo (see the ar6cles in the Na6onal Ceramic Magazine) will be the award judge and will also be giving workshops around the country. The date for Durban is 29th
November at Durban High School. This is a once in a life-‐6me opportunity to see a master craYsperson at work. Our Regional was put together by your commiRee who worked very hard and I thank them on your behalf.
The standard of work was even beRer than last year and it was good to see that our members only put their best work in re self selec6on. Our sales were approximately R35,000.
Congratula6ons to our prize winners Thank you to our selectors/judges who performed a difficult and sensi6ve task. An ar6cle on our Regional will appear in the Na6onal Ceramic Magazine in the near future. Thank you to Daryl Houghton who has taken much 6me and effort to do this and Anthea Mar6n who co-‐ordinated the painted fishes – a side exhibi6on.We hosted Andile Dyalvane on Saturday for a stunning informa6ve workshop where he showed us how his designs translated into clay vessels as well as sharing with us an interes6ng coiling technique. I have included some photos for you to see.The commiRee would appreciate any feed back re the Regional Exhibi6on so that we can make next years event even beRer so please send your comments to me.
Keep Crea6ng

Dear members,! I attended the Clay Festival in Johannesburg recently and enjoyed this event which takes place every two years. It was successful on many levels. The presenters were informative and professional. The trade hall buzzed with demonstrations by the likes of Merentia Kooiman and the shopping for ceramic supplies was awesome. Our own Lindsay Scott gave a workshop on throwing with paper porcelain and explained how he uses Leach’s concept of ‘accidental’ effects . (Paper clay being forgiving enough to allow lots to happen to it.) If you have a chance - plan to attend the next one in 2013.
I also attend the National Ceramic Council Meeting on behalf of our KZN Region and it is good to know that we have dedicated people handling the extraordinary amount of work that it takes to host clay Festivals, Nationals and our website.
Our National Exhibition is in Pretoria next year (Oct 2012) and there will also be a catalogue .- all sponsored by Corobrik, It will costs over R60,000 to host this exhibitionOur invited international judge for this event is Daphne Corregan (born in the USA, currently resident in France), who has a very impressive CV. She has agreed to accept appointment as the Award Judge for the National Exhibition. Daphne teaches at the University in Monaco and has to slot her visit in to complete everything within a four week period. She will also be giving us a workshop here in KZN. We host her for over a week and if any member would like to contribute to her stay it would be most welcome i. e she is keen to see game parks and the Berg. If one has contacts re accommodation for the above please let us know.
Finally a decision has been made about when does one become a Senior Citizen. In the interest of a non discriminatory society all of us become Senior Citizens when we turn 65 !
Members who turn 65 can claim a reduced membership.
We are in discussions with website designers to upgrade our website. Existing profiles will be upgraded to your advantage. This will incur costs to members who would like a profile. We willreport back once a decision is made about the new look and workings of the site artSPACE is in the process of paying everyone (for work sold on the Regional). Contact me if you have not received monies yet.REMINDER : We continue to ask our members to do internet transfers when booking a workshop. With all the cash handed to us for our last workshop we could have been charged over R200 by the Bank. (God rest their souls)

MEMBERS SELL YOUR WORK AT in early December
What type of work will sell? Suitable work for I heart would be gift lines rather than work suitable for an exhibition-‐ think Christmas and pieces priced in the R80 to R300 bracket as well as "stocking fillers"Visit I heart and you,ll see that the clientele is appreciative of unique handmade ware. They are discerning and are of all age groups Also be aware of not treading on other traders toes as the organisers need a variety of goods!
The committee will work out the logistics soon but obviously we can only take a few pieces from each artist-‐maybe more-‐it depends on how many members want to join in. So please let Corrie Hook know if you are entering and if possible send her a photo of a typical product as soon as possible. Deadline for putting your name down is 1st October .
