aBout mississippi state Mississippi state is under the direction of first-year head coach Vic schaefer following a 14-16 campaign a year ago. schaefer comes to starkville following nine seasons as Associate head coach at Texas A&M and is known for his stifling defenses. sophomore center Martha Alwal (6-4) and sophomore guard Kendra Grant are the lone returning starters for the lady Bulldogs, as Alwal averaged 5.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game last season while Grant added 7.3 points per contest. The lady Bulldogs played their lone exhibition contest on Friday, defeating shorter, 55-49. sophomore forward carnecia Williams (6-3) and junior guard Katia May (5-2) each posted 13 points to lead Mississippi state.

seRies HistoRY vs. mississippi state houston and Mississippi state have only met once on the hardwood, as the lady Bulldogs came away with a 76-57 victory over the cougars on Nov. 27, 2002 at hofheinz pavilion. cougar legend chandi Jones tallied 33 of houston’s 57 points to go with seven rebounds and three blocks, while laToya Thomas paced the lady Bulldogs with 31 points and 13 boards. houston will meet a team from the southeastern conference for the first time since Nov. 21, 2009, when the cougars fell at seventh-ranked lsu by a score of 72-54.

Houston in season openeRs coming into Friday night’s season opener at Mississippi state, houston has put together a 28-9 record all-time in the first contest. The cougars’ last-second loss to New Mexico state last season snapped a four-game winning streak in season openers dating back to Nov. 9, 2007. houston has dominated when opening the season at home, but has also held its own when beginning the season on the road with a 7-4 mark. The cougars have only played two true road contests to open a season since the 1996-97 season, falling to Wisconsin (77-54) on Nov. 18, 2005, and defeating Gardner-Webb (86-64) on Nov. 13, 2009. Friday’s contest marks only the second time the cougars have met a southeastern conference opponent in the season opener, as houston topped No. 25 lsu by a score of 66-59 on Nov. 14, 1997.

LanDRY RetuRns FoR FiFtH YeaR senior point guard porsche landry was granted a fifth year of eligiblity following a season-ending head and neck injury in just the third contest of the 2011-12 campaign. landry was poised for one of the greatest seasons in program history at the time of the injury, averaging 22.0 points per game, including a 37-point effort in the season opener against New Mexico state and 20 second half points against Texas Tech in the following contest. The houston native has started in 91 of 95 career games and is one of only four players all-time with 1,000 points (1,081) and 300 assists (345).

CouGaRs BRinG in taLenteD CLass The 2012-13 edition of the cougars may be young and inexpe-rienced, but there is no lack of talent after an impressive eight-player recruiting haul.

The class, which consists of six freshmen and two junior col-lege transfers, addressed needs with size and athleticism in both the front and backcourt, while also providing coach Buchanan with the most depth he’s had going into his third season. Various recruiting services took notice, as ESPN HoopGurlz tabbed the class as 40th-best in its final rankings, while Dan Olson’s Collegiate Girl’s Basketball Report gave the early six-player class in November a top 25 ranking at No. 22, which is tops in conference usA. neW numBeR, neW staRt Not only will fans have the opportunity to see senior point guard porsche landry back in action for her fifth year, they will also see her donning a new look. After having to watch a young and injury-riddled squad from the sidelines while enduring a long recovery last year, landry entered her final season at houston wanting to change things up for a fresh start. “The number really didn’t matter to me, but with the injury, i actually didn’t want 20 anymore. i wanted a new number, a new start.” After three-plus years of donning the No. 20, landry decided to suit up in the No. 5 for her final hurrah, which has always been her favorite number.

teXaDa Reunites WitH BuCHanan senior forward Destini Texada transferred to the houston women’s basketball program last season from nearby houston Baptist university, where she spent her first collegiate season under Todd Buchanan. Texada played two contests at hBu last season and will become eligible for her senior season at houston on Dec. 22 when the cougars play Texas state. The houston native is expected to make an immediate impact upon her return to the court. Texada, who is majoring in biology with aspirations of becom-ing a veterinarian, averaged 10.2 points and 6.9 rebounds in 57 career contests at hBu.

ReCappinG tHe 2011-12 season The cougars are eager for a fresh start after enduring a season plagued with devastating injuries that resulted in a 3-26 campaign. houston lost five players due to season-ending injuries during the first half of the season, including the starting backcourt in just the third game of the season when porsche landry and Tasha Tubbs went down. The cougars battled attrition the entire season with seven other players missing at least one game due to injury, resulting in houston playing with no more than eight players in all but two games since the third contest of the year. senior guard roxana Button was forced to pick up the slack, avearging a league-leading 17.8 points per game to earn c-usA First-Team honors. Button, who enrolled in medical school upon graduation, also became the first player in program history to garner capital one Academic All-America First-Team accolades.

tHe name Fits houston’s starting point guard’s first name describes her style of play perfectly, as porsche landry often resembles the speedy automobile on the court. landry slashed defenses in 2010-11 to the tune of 14.8 points per game, and was averaging 22.0 points through the opening three contests last season before her injury. The houston native has flourished in head coach Todd Buchanan’s uptempo style of play, averaging 15.4 points per game in 35 contests compared to 9.0 points per contest in her first two seasons. landry became the 21st member of the school’s 1,000-point club late in the 2010-11 season and is only the fourth cougar all-time with 1,000 points and 300 assists. The story of how landry got her name is just as unique as the name itself. landry’s father was playing in the NFl at the time and her mother had asked for a porsche to drive. The couple already had a name for their newborn, but when the baby was delivered, landry’s father simply said, “here’s your porsche,” and the name stuck.

a HeapinG HeLpinG oF HoFHeinZ houston’s hofheinz pavilion will be a second home for cougar fans this season, as the women’s basketball squad will play 16 regular-season games at their home arena for the second year in a row, which ties for second-most all-time in school history and the most since the 1977-78 season. The non-conference slate features games against teams from the Big 12, sEc, Missouri Valley and Mountain West, and eight of the 13 games will be played at hofheinz pavilion. The cougars will play eight total contests this season against teams that advanced to postseason play a year ago.

stanDinG amonGst tHe tRees With the incoming recruiting class, the coaches wanted to ad-dress a lack of size and they did just that, as the cougars’ stand at an average height of 5’11”, which ranks as the fifth-tallest squad in program history. only four teams have stood taller (2004-05, 2003-04, 2001-02, 1988-89) at an inch higher (6’0”), and three of those four went on to postseason play. houston features nine student-athletes that stand at least six feet tall, and four that are 6’2” or taller. seven of the nine players are newcomers that are eligible to play for the 2012-13 season.

taYLoR GiLBeRt out FoR season Freshman forward Tyler Gilbert will be making her collegiate debut this season without her twin sister, Taylor, who suffered a torn Acl in preseason workouts. Taylor, who starred with her sister at nearby hightower high school, also tore an Acl prior to her senior season. “it’s very unfortunate that Taylor has to go through this pro-cess two years in a row, but she’s in great hands with Dr. lowe and (assistant trainer) Amanda Barbee helms, and that will equal a speedy return,” head coach Todd Buchanan said. “We look forward to her being 100 percent healthy heading into the 2013-14 season and BiG EAsT conference play.”

teRRan’ DoWn tHe BoaRDs sophomore forward Terran Alford entered her first collegiate season a year ago with the primary goal of helping the cougars on the glass, and the oklahoma city, okla., product certainly did so by ranking among the top freshmen in c-usA for most of the season with 5.7 rebounds per game. Alford, who was home-schooled and had only played bas-ketball for three years before traveling to houston, made her presence known in just her fourth collegiate game, pulling down 20 rebounds against oral roberts on Nov. 22. The 20 rebounds tied a school record shared by sancho lyttle (2005) and Toni Mooney (1983). The following contest, Alford recorded her first double-double at the collegiate level, posting 12 points and 11 boards against yale to become the first houston freshman to achieve the feat since courtney Taylor on Feb. 23, 2008.

YoutH movement For the second-straight season, houston will feature one of the youngest teams in conference usA with six true freshmen, trailing only uAB’s seven. The early signing period class last November with the six freshmen rated as high as No. 22 nationally by Dan Olson’s Col-legiate Girl’s Basketball Report. The cougars also lead the league with 10 newcomers, as uAB and uTEp are the next closest with eight. Along with the six freshmen, houston welcomes two Division i transfers eligible to play this season (Marissa Ashton - Texas Tech, Destini Texada - houston Baptist) and two junior college transfers (yasmeen Thompson, Te’onna campbell).

Houston to Join BiG east ConFeRenCe The BiG EAsT conference formally announced the addition of the university of houston, as well as ucF, sMu, Boise state and san Diego state on Dec. 7, 2011. houston, ucF and sMu will join the BiG EAsT conference in all sports for the 2013-14 academic year. The BiG EAsT conference has emerged as one of the major powers in women’s basketball, claiming eight national titles while 11 squads have reached the championship game in the past 17 seasons. “As a basketball coach, as well as a player, there is no greater opportunity than to compete in the BiG EAsT conference, which in my opinion is the elite basketball conference in the country,” head coach Todd Buchanan said. “you look at the list of national champions that have come out of that league, coupled with the talent being produced in our state, and we now have a very deadly combination when it comes to recruiting,” Buchanan continued. “The excitement level surrounding our university family is off the charts. With the BiG EAsT brand and the tremendous tradition houston has, you will be hard pressed to find a better place to call home than u of h.”

Houston’s aLL-time GReat Joins staFF Former All-American and top-10 WNBA Draft selection chandi Jones returned to the university of houston prior to the start of the 2011-12 season. Jones served as video coordinator during her first season and will take over the role of administra-tive coordinator for the 2012-13 campaign. “My short-and long-term vision has been to have former players come back to the staff and reunite as part of our basket-ball family,” Buchanan said. “For this to come full circle in such a short amount of time, it’s remarkable. The word exciting doesn’t do full justice to how i feel about having chandi back at the uni-versity of houston.” Jones, who played at houston from 2000-04, is heralded as one of the greatest basketball players ever, male or female, to attend the university of houston. Jones will reunite with Buchanan, who served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator during her four years with the cougars. The conference usA Female Athlete of the Decade is the all-time houston and c-usA leading scorer with 2,692 points, which ranks 21st in NcAA history, while placing 14th all-time in the NcAA with a career 23.6 points per game figure. Jones reached double figures in 114 games, marking every contest of her career.

in just his first season at the helm of the houston women’s basketball team, head coach Todd Buchanan led the cougars on one of the most memorable runs in program history.

houston posted an overall record of 26-6, marking the second-most wins in school history, while storming through conference usA with a perfect 16-0 mark in regular season play, becoming only the second team in league history to achieve the feat.

Buchanan also returned the cougars back to national prominence as houston earned an at-large bid to the NcAA Tournament and cracked the top 25 polls for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Buchanan, who was the lone first-year head coach to take his team to the NcAA Tournament in 2011, was honored as the conference usA coach of the year, marking only the second houston floor general to garner the accolade, while also being named a WBcA National coach of the year finalist.

HOUSTON BAPTISTNamed as the huskies women’s basketball head coach prior to the 2005-06 season, Buchanan led the hBu program for five seasons and compiled an 80-68 (.540) record. he led the program to a pair of trips to the NAiA National Tournament before leading the team through the transi-tion to NcAA Division i.

in his first year, Buchanan guided the huskies to a 28-4 season that included red river Athletic conference regular-season and postseason tournament championships. During the NAiA National Tournament, he led the team to a sweet 16 appearance. At the conclusion of the season, hBu was ranked sixth in the national polls.

Following up his successful first campaign, Buchanan’s 2006-07 hBu squad posted a 27-7 mark and again claimed the rrAc Tournament championship. Advancing to the NAiA National Tourna-ment for a second straight season under Buchanan, the huskies advanced to the field’s final eight before finishing the season ranked 22nd nationally.

houston Baptist began the unenviable transition from NAiA to NcAA Division i during Buchanan’s third year at the school and, despite these challenges, Buchanan guided the huskies to a 14-11 record during its first year of the transition.

Among the standouts coached by Buchanan at hBu were Jere’ Adams, sherill hadrick, Velencia Kuykendall and Dominique Thomas, who were all named All-Americans. his teams were also

solid in the classroom as represented by Academic All-America selections in Kuykendall, Ashley Davis and Jessica Brantley.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTONJoining the coaching staff of former uh head coach Joe curl, Buchanan spent five seasons on the cougar sideline and helped lead the team to the postseason four times. Additionally with Buchanan’s help, standouts chandi Jones and sancho lyttle were recruited to houston where they developed into top-10 draft picks in the WNBA.

in his first season in houston during the 2000-01 campaign, the cougars made the postseason for the first time in nine seasons as they won 19 games and appeared in the Women’s National invitational Tournament.

The following year, houston set a then-school record with 26 wins and was again a part of the WNiT field where it won four consecutive games before falling 54-52 against oregon in the championship game.

During the 2003-04 season, Buchanan and the cougars reached new heights by compiling a school-record 28-4 record and claiming both the conference usA regular-season and postseasontournament championships. uh appeared in the NcAA Tournament for the first time since 1992, and Jones became the school’s only First Team All-American. The program also earned its first NcAA Tournament win as the cougars defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 62-47.

A second consecutive trip to the NcAA Tournament followed during the 2004-05 season, and Jones was later named c-usA player of the Decade. Both Jones and lyttle went on to play in the WNBA, and lyttle was selected as an All-star while playing for the Atlanta Dream in 2009.

EARLY COACHNG CAREERBuchanan spent two seasons (1998-2000) as an assistant coach at East carolina, after his first head coaching job at the university of Montevallo, where he coached from 1996-98.

prior to Montevallo, Buchanan had coaching stops at oral roberts (1995-96) and at his alma mater of Murray state (1992-95). he has also coached at lyon country high school (Eddyville, Ky.), Murray high school (Murray Ky.) and calloway county Middle and high school (Murray, Ky.).

PERSONALBuchanan is a 1995 graduate of Murray state, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education with a minor in health.

Buchanan and his wife Michelle have a 3-year old son, colton, and live in pearland. his father, Tom, enjoyed a successful coaching career in both Texas and Kentucky after playing college basketball at Eastern New Mexico.
