PRESIDENTS REPORT

First of all I would like to congratulate all clubs on a fantastic season 2016, and to all the clubs that competed and hosted during the finals this year and also Tallygaroopna for hosting Interleague this year. Your efforts in preparing and hosting these matches also saw great crowds in attendance.

Congratulations to all the 2016 Premiers and Runners up for a great Grand Final Day. Also to all the award winners from our Presentation Evening, it was a Great night to finish off the 2016 season.

Thank you to our league sponsors for their continued support of our great league: Strap and Wrap, Plus One Group, Leocata’s Transport, Nathalia Printers, Shepparton News, Intersport Bennetts, Knights Furniture, Warren Family, Bright Eyes Hairdressing and Day Spa, Hume Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group and AFL Goulburn Murray. Also to all the sponsors supporting all 13 clubs, as your support continues to assist each club run day to day.

Thank you to all whom represented our league either as a player or supporter but special thanks to all coaches Brent Chapman, Dean Wileman, Julie Telford, Rod O’Neil and Sherryn Wall. Also thank you to all those that supported the coaches in various ways from assistants, trainers, water carriers etc. and to all those that attended and supported on the day. Thank you to Tallygaroopna for hosting the final training run and the day itself putting on a great meal.

Thank you to all our umpires in both football from the GVFUA and volunteers and also netball throughout the season. They have one of the hardest positions; never able to please all but they are the ones who put their hand up every week to do this sometimes thankless task so a big thank you. Also to all tribunal members whom have sat on any of the KDFNL cases this year, thank you for volunteering your time to listen to all parties concerned and sometimes having to make the tough decisions.

Thank you to Sam Saracino for his coverage of the KDFNL, each week interviewing club members on our KDFNL Radio Show and also his columns in each program along with the ONE FM broadcast team whom broadcast our grand final day, various games throughout the year and also the presentation night.

Thank you to AFL Goulburn Murray led by Martin Gleeson for their continued work in assisting the KDL whether administratively or developmentally. Special Mention to Grant Wilson, Ted Lindon and Josie Logan for all their support and effort this year, and also to Kailem Harrison and Bree Boyle for their assistance throughout the season.

To all the club volunteers who do a mountain of work to make sure your sides run out each and every week, thank you for your tireless efforts to make sure two great sports still continue in the KDFNL.

To my other board members Sandy, Doug, Trevor, Jo, Vin, Deb, Val and Marilyn, thank you for your support and assistance in leading our great league. I cannot thank you enough for your efforts, sometimes in trying circumstance. I look forward to the direction the KDFNL is heading into the future.

Finally thank you all for your continued support of the Kyabram District Football Netball League throughout season 2016 and hope to see you all again in 2017.

OPERATIONS REPORT Interleague In 2016, the KDFNL again played host to the Worksafe AFL Victoria Community Championship held on the 21st of May at Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve. The KDFNL played against Golden Rivers Football League in the senior and Under 18’s Football and also hosted the Golden Rivers Netball Association in the Open and 17 & Under Netball It was a mixed result for the KDFNL with the seniors suffering a heavy defeat and the 18’s had a convincing win and in the netball opens had a comfortable win while 17 & under side lost in a close encounter. Thank you to Nev Montgomery and the Tallygaroopna Football Netball Club for providing their facilities for the day, and training sessions followed by a fantastic meal for players and officials on the Thursday night prior to the game. Many thanks to all your team of helpers Nev. The following weekend saw the 17 & Under and 15 & Under Netball teams compete in the Northern Association Championships in Shepparton competing against various other associations and leagues across the northern region. While unable to come away with many wins, the players got a great deal out of it, with a few players also being identified for trials for the Netball Victoria North East Zone Academy Program. A big thank you goes out to all players and officials who made themselves available to represent the KDFNL. Furthermore, special thanks to our coaches; Brent Chapman (Senior Coach) assisted by Christian Barnett, Troy Auld and Linc Sullivan, Dean Wileman (Under 18 Coach) assisted by Ricky Shiner and in the netball Julie Telford (Open) and Deb Hosie (T/Mgr), Rod O’Neil (17 &U Coach) and Zoe Backway (T/Mgr) and Sherryn Wall (15 & Under Coach) and Melissa Hosie (T/Mgr). Thank you to the amazing support staff Jenna McCartney, Bridie Stanton, Jess McLennan, Jade Stevens and Kylie Henderson who did an amazing job both on match day and on training nights looking after the players making sure they were prepared to represent the league. Finals Series An intriguing and unique 2016 finals series kicked off on August 27. Ten different clubs where represented this final series with a special mention to Nagambie able to have 7 of their 8 teams compete in the final game. Well done to all the hosting clubs and your members for putting on some great days and also to the match day co-ordinators who made work easier for all clubs involved. Congratulations to all clubs who participated in yet another successful Grand Final Day at Mooroopna and Congratulations to those teams able to walk away victorious. Presentation Night Continuing on from season 2015, the League held its annual night of nights as one event at Mooroopna’s Sir Ian McLennan Centre with a crowd of over 270 people attending. Well done to all award winners on the night as well as thank you to all those who contributed to the successful evening including Wes Cusworth and Sam Saracino who teamed up to be the Master of Ceremonies and Interviewer allowing a the night to run smoothly. Thank you also to Jake Keating, Jo Backway and Deb Hosie for reading of all the votes.

Umpires & Tribunal The Goulburn Valley Football Umpires Association (GVFUA) again supplied our football umpires for 2016. Successfully led by President Darren Meek, the GVFUA did another outstanding job to ensure that our matches were supplied with umpire’s week in week out. We could not compete if it wasn’t for their contribution so thanks to Darren and his association for their continued support. Thank you also to all the club umpires who gave up their time to officiate in football and netball games each week. Also thank you to all the club umpires who run central, boundary, goal and also the umpires at the netball whom volunteer their time each and every week to make sure all games are run. Without these club people, players would not be able to play the sport they so enjoy! 2016 saw another reduction in tribunal hearings which is fantastic for the league; however there were still a few cases heard. Thank you to all those whom sat on a tribunal hearing this season Although the overall number of charged players was not too bad, there is still room for improvement. One of the most frequent reports for the season was for abusive language to an umpire. Set penalties cannot be offered for this charge so a tribunal hearing must occur. Players, umpires, club officials and tribunal members then have to spend valuable time preparing for and attending a tribunal hearing. This must be one of the easiest reports to prevent occurring and it would be great if clubs could reinforce this to their players. Likewise with the use of social media, clubs are encouraged to brief their players on the correct use of the increasingly prevalent social media. An AFL Victoria Policy is in effect for the inappropriate use of social media and the like with strong penalties able to be enforced. Step into Season 2017 Next year will see the introduction of the state wide Player Payment Rule following on from the point system that was introduced this year. As well as the cap, a reduction in points will be a part of the Community Club Sustainability Program (CCSP). This has been implemented to support and give power back to the clubs, as in recent years the players have increasingly continued to dictate the market. Updated football and netball bylaws will be voted on at the Annual General Meeting and implemented by the KDFNL for the 2017 season. A copy of the updated bylaws will be emailed to clubs following the 2016 Annual General Meeting.

Final Note On a personal note I would just like to make mention a few people and groups. It is with great pride that I am able to write my first KDFNL Operations Report as the newly appointed AFL Goulburn Murray League Operations Officer. Being fresh out of university and commencing my role in one of the busy times for football and netball it was a huge learning curve but I thank the Executive and clubs for supporting me. Grant Wilson deserves many praises for his time with the KDFNL, especially with guiding me over the past 3 months despite starting a new role of his own as the League Operations Manager overseeing the Goulburn Valley Football League. Thank you to all my colleagues in the office for all their assistance during a busy time headed by the highly professional Region General Manager Martin Gleeson. All staff have a genuine care at heart for the League and all clubs involved. Particular thanks to Grant Wilson who installed yet another successful season before handing over the role at the end of July. Despite starting a new role of his own, Grant continued to be fundamental in the league’s operations as well as educating myself on the art of sports administration. Lastly but certainly not least, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the members of the KDFNL Executive for making me feel welcome and also for their continued assistance and support through this transition. Wayne Ryan, Vin Edwards, Doug Tuhan and Trevor Goode have been essential for all football matters with a special mention to Vin, who stepped in when a few unique football issues arose this year. On the netball side of things, Sandy Ryan, Jo Backway, Deb Hosie, Val Beis and Marilyn Wall have also been superb with their thorough knowledge and assistance in dealing with all things netball, showcased with the successful running of the netball finals series.
