    Move Over, Kickstarter: Microunding Sites

    Target Local Communities

    BY BRIAN PATRICK EHA

When Jay Ducote, a husky Louisiana

    ood blogger, entrepreneur and radio

    personality, received a $1,000 grant

    last May rom local microunding

venture 225 Fund, he knew already

what he was going to spend it on: ex-

    tra hard drives.

    Ducote, a 2011 MasterChe com-

petitor, had been creating an Inter-

net TV series about his quest to be-

come healthier while still making a

living as a ood and drink writer, and

he had run into a problem. The high-denition digital ootage his lm-

maker was shooting took up a huge

    amount o hard-drive space. The

money rom 225 Fund allowed him

to buy the extra space he needed.

    "225 Fund is basically a group o

10 guys who believe in doing chari-

    table things or our community,

    which is Baton Rouge, Louisiana,"

    says Tommy Talley, the videogra-

pher or Ducote's show, who later

became a member o the und as his

way o helping the businesses in his

hometown. "Ten o us donate $100

a month and we hand it to them as$1,000 cash and walk away."

    The microunding venture gives out

    one no-strings-attached grant nearly

    every month. "It's young entrepre-

neurs putting money directly in the

    hands o go-getting entrepreneurs,"

Talley explains. "No piles o paper,

no jumping through a bunch o

    hoops."

Ducote isn't the only one benet-

    ing rom local investment. Around

    the world, grassroots microunding

ventures are springing up to support

    entrepreneurs and creative people in

    their communities. Whereas crowd-

    unding platorms such as Kickstart-

er and Indiegogo accept almost any

kind o campaign and permit dona-

tions rom all over the world, micro-

    unding operations deal with smaller

amounts o money and seek to have

    a more local impact.

    One group, the Awesome Foun-

dation, has gone global with the

    $1,000-per-month model. Described

by one trustee as a "digital tribe" o

    "rogue unders," the group, created

in Boston in 2009, is not a true oun-

dation but rather a distributed net-

    work o mostly autonomous chap-

ters in 50 cities around the globe.

"We call it 'New Giving'you don't

have to be a Rockeeller or have

your name on a building to be ableto do this sort o thing," says Lee-

Sean Huang, a ounding trustee o

the New York City chapter, which

receives between 30 and 100 appli-

cations per month. "It's accessible to

    anybody."

    To date, the Awesome Foundation

has donated more than $250,000 to

    und entrepreneurs, inventors and

creative projects, such as a project

to map air quality in Beijing using

    "technologically advanced kites."

"The money is just a part o what we

do or our ellows," adds Kara Brick-man, a ounding trustee o the semi-

    nal Boston chapter. Members, many

o whom have deep networks in their

    respective elds, also provide guid-

ance to grant recipients and connect

    them with valuable contacts.

Last month, all the chapters were

invited to the rst annual Awesome

    Foundation summit in Boston. It

was a time to connect and reiterate

core principles, one o which is the

    group's no-strings-attached policy

    or unds. The members decided

long ago that they would rather

spend their time sorting through ap-plications or worthwhile projects

and businesses than keep close tabs

on what they unded last -- though

    many people who have received

    grants voluntarily send updates on

    their progress.

    "What gets these trustees' engines

running and gets them to open up

their wallets once a month and take

out a C-note is ideas," Brickman

says. But at the same time, she adds,

they "want to und things that lead to

    a direct experience or product."

hood restaurant build a back patio.

The restaurant might give you $150

o credit or ood and drinks. Chanc-

es are that by the time you've ex-

hausted the perk, you'll have built a

rapport with the owner that ensures

you keep coming back. In this way,

    online investments lead to commu-

    nity connections.

    "With local businesses, there's more

knowledge o the market, so inves-

tors have a good sense o what would

do well," says Amy Cortese, the au-

    thor o Locavesting: The Revolution

in Local Investing and How to Prot

From It (Wiley, 2011). "A lot o peo-

ple think that small businesses are

risky, but I think the opposite argu-

ment can be made, especially i you

look at the perormance o the stockmarket over the last ew years."

Five months ater quitting his job as

a corporate securities lawyer to ocus

on Smallknot, Lee was joined by Ben

Rossen, an old Harvard Law School

buddy who was also tired o the Wall

Street grind. They later added Jason

Punzalan to the team as a developer

    and co-ounder.

    So ar, Smallknot hosts campaigns

only in New York City and Lee's

    hometown o Greenville, S.C. But

    having secured $118,000 in und-

ing this year rom startup incubatorTechstars, Lee plans to expand to

ve to 10 more cities by early 2013.

    Fundamentally, Lee says, Smallknot

-- and local microunding in general

-- is about "building the community

    you want to live in."

People who invest in a local business

    tend to become ambassadors or

    that company, adds Cortese. "They

eel like they have in a stake in it,

because they do, and they'll be out

there talking it up. It's a win-win or

    both sides."

    Job Advice

    by Sheryl Krase

You've landed your rst job out o

college. That wasn't easy, in this

tough time. Now you've got to make

sure you keep it and succeed at it.

How? You can start even beore you

arrive at work. Set up a Web news

alert account that e-mails you news

stories relevant to your new employ-

er, says Danielle Leyland, a recruit-

    er in the inormation technology

    department at Sherwin-Williams,

the paint company. That will help

prepare you to engage your co-work-

ers when you get there, especially i

    there's big news--and it's also a way

to nd out about potential opportu-

nities. Perhaps a new product is go-

ing to be launched. Even i it's bad

news--a round o layofs or company

downsizing, or example--it will a-ect the entire company and will be

    important to know about.

To take it a step urther, stay up to

date on competitors and the indus-

try as a whole, too. That will give you

    perspective on where your employer

is heading and why certain decisions

get made. Your colleagues will take

you more seriously seeing how dedi-

cated you are to the proession.

When your rst day on the job ar-

rives, show up at least 10 minutes

early and don't leave as soon as the

clock strikes 5 p.m. That could comeof as doing the bare minimum,

which is not the rst impression any

    employer wants to receive.

    Also, dress proessionally, even i

you're sure most people dress casu-

ally. Men should wear slacks and a

    button-down shirt, women either

slacks or a skirt with a top that covers

their shoulders. "You can assess what

everyone is wearing during the rst

ew days and then tone it down,"

advises Kathryn Santers, a sta ng

    manager or the higher-education

    division o the educational publish-

    ing rm Pearson.

Once you settle in and are given pro-

jects to work on, be sure you've got

    a clear understanding o what's ex-

pected. I you're not completely sure

about something, ask. "It's better to

ask a question and be cautious than

to do it wrong," says Santers. And

when you ask, have pen and paper

with you to write down the details

so you don't have to ask more than

once. I you don't agree with an as-

signment you're given, don't say so

until ater you've completed it. Even

then, do so tactully, suggesting al-

    ternatives or slight tweaks without

    antagonizing your manager.

Along the same lines, never behave

as i some tasks are beneath you. At

some point everyone needs to le or

make photocopies. Your goal is to

make your boss's job easier. I doing

clerical work accomplishes that, do it

    without complaining. "It may seem

    menial, but it's a part o a big pic-

ture," says Santers. "Not every day

on your new job will be glamorous,

but there's always a point to what

    you're doing."

Don't try to impress your manager by

saying you'll nish a job quickly i it

means you'll have to get too hasty. Be

realistic in what you can accomplish,

and keep your manager up to date

on your progress. During your rst

week, discuss with your boss how he

or she preers to communicate. Not

    every question requires popping into

her o ce, so ask i she preers e-mailor instant messages. As you work on

your rst assignment, check in to

update her on your progress. Ask i

    you're approaching it right. When

you've completed it, ask or eedback.

Did you get it done successully? Was

there anything you could have done

    to improve your work?

Don't be shy about this. Your man-

ager has a vested interest in your

success, since it's much easier or her

to help you as you go along than to

    retrain you.
