Dr. George Melville Chancellor
message from
The Chancellor
Education is such a critical part of what makes communities better. Through education, we gain perspective, understanding and a
foundation for individual and collective success. Today, we celebrate your successes, and recognize how far you have come both personally and professionally.
This is your day, and now is your time. At KPU, you have had the opportunity to be a part of something great. The university is bigger, better and bolder than ever, and this is just the beginning. Like yours, our future is exciting. We are Canada’s only polytechnic university, and our graduates are local and global leaders.
The impact KPU has on the community is massive, and your role in that will continue as you set out to achieve new goals. Our alumni have the power to affect change, and they positively impact all of our communities – including ours, right here, at KPU. Your success is the university’s success.
It is an honour to have assumed the role of chancellor and I am especially proud to be doing so as a KPU alumnus. Kwantlen Polytechnic University is my university, and it will forever be yours as you continue your journey to success.
To our bigger, better, bolder futures.
Sincerely,
K WA N T L E N P O LY T E C H N I C U N I V E R S I T Y 7
Dr. Alan Davis President and Vice-Chancellor
message from
The President and Vice-Chancellor
On behalf of the entire KPU community, I welcome one and all to this happy day of celebration where we honour our Fall 2018 graduates.
KPU has a unique mandate in the national post-secondary system and is the largest university of its kind in Western Canada.
We are a learning ecosystem, rooted in a culture of sustainability, creativity and quality that inspires our people and our communities. By thinking and acting together, we transform lives and empower positive change.
We are guided by our strategic plan, VISION 2023 and its 12 goals direct us to improve the experiences of students and employees at KPU; to sustain ourselves, the environment and our diverse cultures; to foster creativity in its many forms; and to do all this with quality.
I am fortunate to work with wonderful colleagues, our Board of Governors, our chancellor, members of the KPU Alumni and Foundation boards, our friends in local, provincial and federal governments, and so many community partners as we work towards this vision together.
Our graduates today will join our existing alumni and make their way into the world of work, citizenship and further learning, reflecting the best of KPU to our communities both locally and globally.
Best of luck to you all as you embark on your life journey.

ou r story
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is an innovative, transformative and ambitious
institution that serves the needs of Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, and beyond. KPU strives at all times to inspire students to excel in their careers, lead in their communities, and succeed in their lives. With campuses in Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale, Langley and Surrey Civic Plaza—a new expansion into Surrey City Centre, opening in early 2019—KPU has opened the doors to success for over 50,000 alumni for nearly four decades.
Established in 1981 by the Province of British Columbia, KPU proudly adopted the name of the Kwantlen First Nation, whose people are acknowledged historically as ‘tireless runners.’ The name has proven to be prophetic as KPU, the institution, runs tirelessly to expand its capacity to serve the citizens of Metro Vancouver, the province, the nation, and the world.
As Canada’s only polytechnic university, KPU is committed to offering students an unparalleled hands-on education, providing a framework of traditional academics that are complemented by real-world experiences. Offering a diverse mix of credentials in arts, design, health, business, trades and technology, science and horticulture, and academic and career preparation, graduates of KPU are equipped with the skills and understanding necessary for exciting and in-demand careers.
The university’s innovative style of education involves work-integrated and service learning, practical connection to industry, and small, supportive class sizes allowing students more one-on-one time with instructors. Furthermore, KPU’s commitment to applied research and innovation with external partners and business enhances the quality of its teaching, and contributes significantly to the economic development of the region.
As a university that allows for multiple interpretations of excellence, students define and design the path to success that's right for them at KPU: where thought meets action.

Rami Jizi, Bachelor of Arts, Major in Criminology
When Rami Jizi graduated high school, he came directly to KPU, planning to complete a criminology diploma. But after falling in
love with the program, and finding a sense of community, he decided to pursue his bachelor’s degree in the discipline. Beginning his studies with a 2.7 grade point average (GPA), Rami completed his bachelor of arts with a GPA of 3.5, crediting his instructors for playing a major role in his academic success. Furthering his passion for criminology and desire to learn, Rami completed a practicum with Crime Stoppers, visiting local high schools to inform students of anonymous crime reporting resources available to them. He continues to share his experience with volunteerism, practicum, and hands-on learning with other students, providing insight on the benefits and unique opportunities it presents. Now with a future goal of working for a municipal police force or BC Sheriffs, Rami is currently a volunteer with Surrey Crime Prevention, conducting community safety tours close to KPU’s Surrey campus, to ensure a safe and healthy community.
Neyhit Jindal, Diploma in Computer Information Systems
After graduating from high school in India, Neyhit Jindal began traveling, quickly discovering his interest in exploring other cultures
and different ways of life. His passion for multiculturalism and desire to see the world brought him to Canada, and ultimately, KPU where he began studying computer information systems. As a student, Neyhit dedicated his time to sharing his knowledge and helping others however he could, both on and off campus. Volunteering regularly for events, Neyhit was active as a peer adviser, answering questions about KPU services, showing others how to find information they need, and supporting fellow students. His volunteerism continued as an orientation leader where he welcomed new students to the university, sharing experiences, leading campus tours, and creating a fun and inclusive environment for everyone around him. A Dean’s Honour Roll student, Neyhit's instructors regularly urged fellow students to connect with him as a Learning Centre tutor and he spoke on behalf of the Learning Centres to new students, offering strategies for goal setting, time management, and more. Now, Neyhit plans to begin a career in IT, continuing to learn and grow as a leader.
These awards are presented annually by the President and are meant to encourage KPU students in all fields of study to excel in their program choice and participate in university, student and community activities that benefit others. One degree program graduate and one diploma program graduate will be recipients of this award.

Kristan Ash, Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurial Leadership Alumna
Kristan Ash came to KPU after completing a nursing diploma in the mid-90s. Feeling she could make a more significant contribution on the
management side of health care Ash felt KPU was the place that could help leverage her real-world knowledge with progressive and practical training in business principles. Graduating with a bachelor of business administration in 2003, Kristan launched her first business the following spring, which was later acquired and merged with Nurse Next Door. During her time with the organization, Kristan was responsible for growing the highly successful international franchise, but her impressive career feats do not stop there. Taking on leadership and consulting roles in health care, Kristan managed the development, construction, and opening operations of Bear Creek Villa, a seniors living facility in Surrey, and currently works as the executive director of the Fraser Northwest Division of Family Practice.
In recognition of her significant business accomplishments, Kristan was named one of Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40 business leaders in 2014, and has received numerous accolades throughout her career. A proud KPU alumna, Kristan is always willing to give back to her alma mater, serving on KPU’s Board of Governors, the KPU senate, the Board of Directors for the KPU Alumni Association—an association she was instrumental in forming over a decade ago—and continues to share her knowledge now as a faculty member in the School of Business.
The purpose of these awards is to recognize KPU Alumni who have enhanced the reputation of the university through their outstanding career, public service, community service, athletic, arts and culture, or academic achievements.

her aldry
u ni v ersi t y m ace
The Arms of Kwantlen Polytechnic University were presented at a ceremony on May 4, 1999 by the Right Honourable Romeo LeBlanc,
Governor General of Canada.
The centre shield features ‘The Spirit of KPU’ emblem comprising a wolf, a salmon, and a river azure as styled by Brandon Gabriel.
At the top of the blue shield, on the left side a lion and on the right a tiger facing each other in the rampant position (upright on one hind leg with forelegs outstretched as if attacking). And at the bottom of the blue shield, on the left a jaguar and on the right a Chinese dragon also facing each other in the rampant position. All are gold.
At the top in the centre, there is an open book with silver or white pages, bindings in gold and on top of it, a gold horizontal (in fess) rectangle (billet) with square bites taken out of the long sides (bretessed). In modern heraldry, this item is meant to represent a computer chip.
The crest appears above the shield, and is supported by a silver and blue twisted fabric wreath. The upper rim is set with a simple silver crown, the upper edge decorated with four salmon, looking at each other in pairs.
Supporting the arms is a green grassy mound, scattered with gold Douglas Fir cones. The mound is rising from wavy horizontal bands of blue and silver. This is the traditional heraldic representation of water - either river or ocean.
On the left is a gold female deer with blue hooves, and her bottom half is a silver fishtail with gold fins. Around her neck is a wreath of twisted silver and blue cloth. Hanging from the wreath is a green disk with an open book on it—the pages are silver; the cover is gold.
On the right is a gold eagle with a silver head, with blue talons and beak. Around his neck is a wreath like the doe’s and hanging from it is a green disk with the heraldic representation of a gold computer chip.
The motto reads: Through Tireless Effort, Knowledge and Understanding.
The mace was originally a weapon during the medieval period, and came to be associated with the prowess and strength of the knight. Today
the mace is a symbol of the University’s authority to award degrees and diplomas. It indicates the seriousness of convocation as the University’s most important academic ceremony, and is a confirmation of the University’s integrity as an academic institution. The mace is carried by a mace-bearer, who leads the processional of faculty and students in to and out of the venue where convocation is held. The mace is usually between four feet and six feet in length and will incorporate the history and tradition that surround the vision for the University.
An academic mace symbolizes the authority vested in the chancellor to confer university credentials. This is why the mace is an integral part of convocation.
Maces are often commissioned to commemorate a milestone anniversary or presidential inauguration. Typically an artist is selected for the honour to develop a highly symbolic design that incorporates the University’s traditions.
KPU’s mace was carved by Kwantlen First Nation artist Drew Atkins.
