    Klang Valley An Introduction

Klang Valley, or Lembah Klang in Malay, is named after Klang River, whichis associated to the early development of the area as a cluster of tin miningtowns in the late 19th century. Situated in the centre of the west coast of

Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley comprises the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur

and its adjoining districts in Selangor, namely Gombak, Hulu Langat, Petaling andKlang, covering an area of 2826 square kilometers. Geographically, it is delineatedby Titiwangsa Mountain Range to the north and east, and the Strait of Malacca tothe west.

Being the most vibrant and lively region in the country, Klang Valley is the heartlandof Malaysias industry and commerce and is always buzzing with vitality. Home toa great number of migrants from other states within Malaysia and foreign workersfrom Indonesia, Myanmar, India and Nepal, it is considered as the fastest growing

region in the country with many more rapidly growingnew towns and yet more is believed to develop in thenear future.

Development of the region took place mainly inthe East-West direction (between Gombak andPort Klang) but the urban areas surrounding KualaLumpur have since grown south towards the borderwith Negeri Sembilan and north towards Rawang.

    A GLANCE OF KLANG VALLEY

    KLANG HISTORY

The Klang district had appeared earlier thanMalacca. This state was part of the colonialSri Vijaya and Majapahit governments. Theorigins of its name came from the Mon-

Khmer lamguage Klong which meantwarehouse. Similarly, C.O Blagden explainedKlang as an important port with manywarehouses. While Charles A.Fishr denedKlang as a canalor waterway. His opinionwas widely accepted given that Klang hasmany waterways that are made out of rivers, including Sg. Klang, Sg. Bertek, Sg. Penang,Sg. Sementa, Sg. Agas, Sg. Kandas, Sg. Binjai,

Sg. Kapar, Sg. Jati, Sg. Aur, Sg. Rasau, andSg. Putus. The name of this river remainsto this day. Klang became important onlyafter the decline of Kuala Selangor after thedeath of Sultan Muhammad (1826- 1857). In1875, Klang was chosen as the capital city ofSelangor before the capital city was movedto Kuala Lumpur in 1880. In 1886, Klang wastouted as a beautiful and clean place.

    SPECIAL VIEW FROM WRITER

There is a saying; people who love to eat are the best people.I just love people who are willing to share information onmouth-watering delicacies. Malaysia has a diverse range of

food and desserts, thanks to its multi-ethnic and multiculturalsociety. Hence, there is always an excuse to have that additionalsnack or desserts.

Particularly for Malaysian desserts, some traditional Malay, Indianand Chinese desserts tend to share a common feature, wheregenerous amounts of coconut milk, gula melaka (palm sugar)and pandan leaves are used. This gives a savoury sweet taste and

fragrance to the desserts. These desserts can be found in mosthawker centres and food courts, as well any restaurant serving localcuisine. Roadside stalls are also common for desserts such as cendoland tau fu fah.

banks and near the sea. Sungai Lang was an important settlement during the BronzeAge. This was determined by the discovery of two types of tools which were made frombronze; a drum and a bell. This proved that Sungai Lang was a trading centre during thatage. Apart from that, wooden coffins containing bodies were also discovered. In addition, other settlements were also discovered on the banks of the Langat River.

    Monument of Kuala Kubu Tragedy

    W

hen speaking of Kuala Kubu tragedy, it is often related to the broken dam.In February 1883, the town was severely ooded due to a dam nearby thatbroke, killing many civilians and damaging their homes. Many of the town

buildings were destroyed beyond repair, except a Buddhist temple and a mosquewhich you will get to see when youre here. The ood victims included even Sir CecilRanking who was a district officer during the British era. The old town of Kuala Kubuwas known as Broken Dam or Ampang Pecah in Malay and the tragedy has beennamed Kuala Kubu Tragedy by the locals. The British, however, decided to build anew town near the remains of Kuala Kubu, right after the tragedy occurred. This newtown is names Kuala Kubu Bharu, which bharu means new in Malay. A monumentto commemorate the tragedy has also been built here.

    Kuala Kubu Bharu Dam

Pertak Dam, or officially known as Selangor Dam, is built to replace the oldbroken dam that caused the massive ood. There is a river called Pertak Riverthat ows along the Aborigines village into the dam. Some remains of the old

town are believed to be underwater of it. Rumour says that when Sir Cecil Rankingwas shooting the sacred white crocodile that appeared at the dam in attempt to killit, he missed a few shots and the bullets hit the wall of the dam, causing the dam tobreak and ood the whole town. No matter how different the stories we get, they

are always related to the legend of the sacred white crocodile. To the locals, this newdam is precious, as it reminds them of the history of their serene and quaint littletown.
