Gianyar administration will earn BAWA an extension of time to organize permits while at the same time being allowed to continue their work.

Originally established on the recommendation of the Regency of Gianyar in 2010, BAWA has worked in the forefront of rabies prevention, community education, sterilization programs and the emergency rescue of injured animals by medical teams working from roving ambulances around the clock.

As the deadline for closure loomed, rescue programs were forced to come to a halt as BAWA workers scrambled to find homes for the nearly 100 animals still under their care. Sick and injured dogs on the side of Bali's roads no longer recive life-saving medical and paliative care from BAWA, but are left to suffer and die in the dust unless other compassionate help can be found.

While efforts to obtain the needed licenses continue, the future of the tens of paid workers employed by BAWA also remains very much in doubt.

the Gianyar administration against BAWA were selective and discriminatory, taken in perceived retaliation for BAWA's spirited and outspoken promotion of rabies prevention and animal rights issues in Bali, sometimes done at the expense of disgruntled officials.

Further fueling the view that BAWA's closure may be both mean-spirited and selective is the fact that, the Regency of Gianyar is not generally known for the imposition of the strict letter of the law in other areas. A point in case, local press reports say illegal accommodation providers in Gianyar far outnumber the legally licensed establishments, demonstrating that strict adherence to rules and permits is more the exception than the rule in Gianyar. (See link: Illegal Outposts in the Hills of Bali)

Girardi told the press conference on Sunday that BAWA had played a central role in the vaccination of 280,000 dogs and the sterilization of 13,280 animals during period of service in Bali.

BAWA's lawyer, Nyoman “Punglik” Sudiantara, announced to the press conference that he is still hopeful that lobbying effort with the

Janice Girardi, the founder of BAWA, told press conference on Sunday, September 29, 2013, that despite their best efforts, the final permits could not be issued within the strict deadline period set by authorities.

Authorities cited BAWA for lacking the proper building permit, the lack of an environmental impact study, and a failure to manage solid and atmospheric pollution.

Many have claimed that the very strict enforcement steps taken by

G'day again folks and welcome to all. The past week has seen the Freo Dockers take a loss to the Hawks, who deserved the win on the day. It was great to see the Dockers finally get up and give the Grand Final a crack, but the better team won on the day. I'd say I haven't seen so many patriotic West Australians get excited about the Grand Final like that in a long time and do hope that the Dockers can come back next year and take a well-deserved win. The powers that be at Bamboo Bar and Grill have asked me to pass on a big thanks to all who participated in the Ash's Series Cricket Bat auction which was held on the day. A good result was had in so far as raising a swag

of money for little Komang and his family. Well done to all involved and all who threw a bid. I am informed that the management team have kept the best cricket bat aside for auction at the N.R.L final next Sunday.

The weekend ahead sees the long anticipated N.R.L Grand Final with Manly Sea Eagles taking on the Roosters. It has been a seriously tough year in the N.R.L with this weekend's decider sure to be a ripper. There are a few places within our pages that will be showing the game live being, Kuta Townhouses, Bamboo Bar and Grill and Moo Moos Steak House which is arguably the home of N.R.L. in Bali. Moo Moos have about the biggest screen on the island with a sound system that rocks, so it's about as close as you can get to being at the game while on the island. Mostly all of our sponsors are fully setup to cater for the fans on the day with many having a few specials to throw in. My money is on Manly to take the win and hope the lads can get it across the line on the day. Go Manly.

Moving along, we get many emails each week about things that are happening on the island and things that travellers and expats have seen or heard, however we are not able to publish some of them because they are too long or after researching the subject matter, are simply not true. One email that we got this week, I have decided to share with you as it really is a true testament to the quality of advertisers that are supporting the paper, and always makes the team at Kuta Weekly happy that so many people enjoy the read each week and are visiting those sponsors. The email is as follows:HiMy name is Danny Gavin, I am a regular to Bali 6 to 8 times a year. I picked up a copy of your paper at the Cavern a regular spot for every visit and then decided to watch the AFL at Kuta Townhouse. It was much better than the Stadium and I picked it up from the advert in your paper.

I have also just booked Ko Ko Mo in Gili for a few night from the add in the back page of your paper. You might want to let these advertisers know that the paper has produced sales, certainly from me anyway. The reason for my email is to see whether you can email me a PDF or Word Doc. version of your paper on a weekly basis, do you have a facility where you do this to an existing data base. I am sure many of my friends would love to receive this and I would be happy to forward it on to the many Bali lovers that I know.

I look forward to reading the paper each week and there is nothing like flipping the pages of your paper with a Bintang or 3 when in Bali. Cheers, Danny.

Thanks for the feedback Danny as we really do appreciate that so many people are enjoying our paper. At this point the best way to get the paper each week, if you aren't on the island, is to join us on Facebook. The paper is posted every Friday morning for everyone to enjoy. All you need to do is click the “Like” button and the paper will be delivered to your desktop each and every Friday. www.facebook.com/kutaweekly is the link to use.

Ok folks that's about my lot for this week and again I congratulate the ferrets

team on their win last weekend. I trust the new tattoo is slightly more even

and straight than the last one, and on that note I will leave you all for the week

and trust that the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and try your best to

remember, I take insults to my dog more personally than insults to myself.

Enjoy Your Week,

ALIASJ…………

Denpasar – A Haven for ScofflawsDenpasar Officials Impotent to Enforce Green Zone No-Build Rules

It's reports that the signs declaring specified areas of Bali's capital city of Denpasar as “no-build” green zones are in many cases being ignored.

The Green Zone Notices (Jalur Hijau) installed by the Zoning and Housing Agency of Denpasar (DTRP) on the left and right sides of the Peguyangan Subak (Jalan Suradipa) have proven themselves invisible and with no deterrent value to those building homes in business in violation of local zoning laws.

Large sign board forbidding construction within the green zone now stand in the middle of recently built boarding houses, workshops and two-storey luxury residences.

A visit the area along Jalan Suradipa, Peguyangan, proved locals pay little or no heed to warnings forbidding construction the official green zone, as seen by the large number of permanent buildings in place and the building boom underway evidenced by the large

number of new structures nearing completion.

O n e l o c a l r e s i d e n t s interviewed by DenPost freely admitted that all the buildings along Jalan Suradipa have been built in violation of the green zone ordinance. “All violate the green zone. The boarding houses, the workshops and the luxury homes – all are standing in the green zone,” said a man who did not wish his name appearing print. The man said the owners of the illegal structures were by people from outside Denpasar and also long-standing residents of Peguyangan.

The man asked: “Can a

building that had already been constructed and has become a permanent structure be penalized by the Denpasar administration? Can a building a l r e a d y s t a n d i n g b e demolished? I'd like to know if the Denpasar administration is prepared to enforce the rules.”

Meanwhile, the chief of Zoning and Planning for Denpasar, Dewa Wesnawa Wedagama, said that if there were buildings violating the

g r e e n z o n e r u l e s i n t h e Peguyangan Subak along Jalan Suradipa, his office and the Denpasar Enforcement Agency (Satpol PP) would immediately take action by issuing warnings and h a l t i n g a l l c o n s t r u c t i o n . Wedagama, appearing ignorant of the numerous and flagrant violating of the zoning rules in the area, expressed surprise and promised to send an enforcement team the next day to look into the reported violations.

As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali.

The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model.Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)This is the right of use over state-owned

(crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement.

Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in

Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIKThis structure is a regularly practiced

procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner.

Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee.

The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

"Tiredness is already a major challenge for pilots who are

deeply concerned that unscientific new EU rules will cut UK standards and lead to increased levels of tiredness, which has been shown to be a major contributory factor in air accidents," BALPA General Secretary Jim McAuslan said in a statement.

The proposals, devised by the European Aviation Safety Agency to harmonize the rules regarding pilots' hours across the European Union, would also mean they could be called to work at any time on their days off. Currently, restrictions are in place to help them plan their rest on days off.

More than half of British airline pilots say they have fallen asleep in the cockpit, a survey said, ahead of an EU vote on flying hours which a pilots' association said could compromise f l ight safety.

According to the B r i t i s h A i r l i n e P i l o t s ' Association (BALPA), 56 percent of 500 commercial pilots admitted to being asleep while on the flight deck and, of those, nearly one in three said they had woken up to find their co-pilot also asleep.

P i lo t exhaus t ion grabbed the headlines this week when a newspaper reported two pilots on a British long-haul flight fell asleep in the cockpit, leaving the packed jet travelling unsupervised on autopilot.

The survey, released by BALPA, came ahead of a vote in the European Parliament on new rules wh ich cou ld rep lace Br i t i sh regulations.

BALPA, a trade union for pilots, voiced concerns that these proposed changes would water down British safety standards.

The rule changes would mean that pilots could work a maximum of 110 hours in a two-week period, more than the 95-hour limit

percent of respondents believed t h e i r a b i l i t i e s h a d b e e n compromised over the last six months by tiredness with almost half saying pilot exhaustion was

the biggest threat to flight safety.

British lawmakers, in a report published earlier this month, expressed concern that the new European rules set the limit for the flight duty period at night too high.

But the Association of European Airlines, which represents 31 European airlines, urged support for the proposals, saying they would ensure all airlines followed the same rules."The new rules would

ensure that Europe will continue to have one of the strictest rules in the world, even stricter than today," the body's acting Secretary-General Athar Husain Khan said in a statement.

The Civil Aviation Agency, Britain's aviation regulator, dismissed worries about the new rules.

" We t h i n k t h e n e w European flight time limitation regulations maintain the UK's current high safety levels, and will actually increase safety for UK passengers travelling on some other European airlines," it said in

The very proper church ladies were appalled. They said something had to be done about this or they would have to

get another organist.

So one of the ladies approached Linda very discreetly about the problem, and

told her to mash up some green persimmons and rub them on her nipples and over her breasts, which should cause

them to shrink in size, but warned her not to taste any of the green persimmons,

because they are so sour they will make your mouth pucker up, and you won't be

able to talk properly for a while..

The voluptuous organist reluctantly agreed to try it.

The following Sunday morning the minister walked up to the pulpit and said,

"Dew to thircumsthanthis bewond my contwol, we will not hab a thermon

WHEN Paul Mason was at his heaviest, a normal breakfast would include a packet of bacon, four sausages, four eggs, bread and hash browns.

It's easy to see how the morbidly obese man was c lock ing 20,000 calories a day and eating his way to an early grave. He once weighed 440kg and was the world's fattest man.

But 304kg lighter after an operation to shed the weight, Paul has found love. And he has a BBC documentary to thank for it.

American woman Rebecca Mountain saw Paul on TV, in a documentary about his plight in seeking a second operation (this time

for excess skin removal) and got in touch over Facebook.

Romance bloomed and Paul says Rebecca is the love of his life.

“I can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together,” the former postman from Suffolk, in England, said. “I can't think about anyone else and nor can she.”

The blossoming romance is a fitting bookend to Paul's tragic journey to obese hell and back. He says he started gaining weight after his heart was broken by a former flame.

Rebecca reached out to Paul initially to help him in his plight to get a skin-removal operation.

“She didn't really t h i n k a n y t h i n g

romantically to start with, she just wanted to help me find someone who will operate,” Paul said.

“I was a bit cautious to start with but as soon as I met her on Skype I felt at ease. We talked for four-and-a-half hours.”

The couple lives in different countries, but Paul hopes Rebecca will visit him in the UK soon.

Flesh-eating drug has reptilian side effectA cheaper heroin substitute which eats away at a user's flesh is reportedly being used in the US. The homemade drug, named Krokodil, contains a potentially lethal mix of codeine and hydrocarbons such as paint thinner or alcohol.

Users filter and boil the drug before injecting it. Krokodil is reportedly 20 times cheaper than heroin but produces a similar high.

Doctors at Arizona's Banner Poison Control Centre have reported two cases of the drug in the past week.

“As far as I know, these are the first cases in the United States that are reported. . . We're extremely frightened,” co-medical

director Frank LoVecchio said

The drug repor ted ly damages blood vessels and causes flesh to rot from the inside out. The result is crocodile-like skin which is where the drug gets its name.

The no parking signs installed around the Gatotkaca statue on Jl. Raya Tuban in Kuta, which seems to be completely invisible to motorcyclists as they freely park their vehicles there and even have the assistance of a parking attendant.

Th e i c o n i c s t a t u e , depicting Gatotkaca standing on his enemy's chariot, has become an attraction for motorcyclists, and many tourists as well, to stop just to take a picture or to unwind for a moment. Gatotkaca is the tragic

hero from great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata.

At the decisive moment of battle between the virtuous Pandawa warriors against the evil Kurawa, Gatotkaca was ordered by Pandawa's supreme advisor, Krisna, to engage Kurawa's fearsome warlord Karna in a deadly duel.

A skilled archer, Karna possessed Konta, a single arrow with the power to kill both mortals and immortals. Krisna specifically asked Gatotkaca to force Karna to unleash the arrow and Gatotkaca obediently embraced his demise.

By sacrificing Gatotkaca, Krisna robbed Karna of his most powerful weapon and rendered him defenseless when a few days later he faced Arjuna, Pandawa's principal archer.

The white statue is surrounded by a small pond with a fountain flowing from an elephant's trunk in a crafted whorl.

Around the statue, which was inaugurated on October 30, 1993, by the then-Bali Governor IB Oka, there is a small garden planted with a big cacti, colorful

flowers and Japanese grass, with a footpath to enable visitors to walk around.

Since the statue is located near Ngurah Rai airport, it has often been the first stopover for domestic tourists who have just arrived in Bali, stopping simply to take a photo of themselves in front of Gatotkaca.

Some parents like to come there just to take a rest while watching their children

playing in the garden. While couples find it to be an ideal place as the garden offers a quite romantic atmos-phere, although they have to withstand the embarrassment of being seen by passersby on the main Tuban road.

The location is accessible by car and motorcycle and it is very easy to find, being only around 5 minutes from the airport if you're not stuck in a traffic jam.

Having a picnic here does not require you to bring food, since there are many food vendors selling meatball soup, grilled corn or boiled peanuts.

Powerful weapon against extermination?

S c i e n t i s t s t r y i n g t o understand why destructive wood-eating termites are so resistant to ef for ts to exterminate them have come u p w i t h a n u n u s u a l l y repugnant explanation.

Termi tes ' p rac t ice o f building nests out of their own faeces creates a scatological force field that Florida scientists now believe is the reason biological controls have failed to stop their pestilential march all over the world.

A n i n e - y e a r s t u d y concluded that termite faeces act as a natural antibiotic, growing good bacteria in the subterranean nests that attack otherwise deadly pathogens, according to the findings published this month in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"When they make a poop, it's not like they can throw it away and say forget about this. And over the millions of years of evolution it somehow evo lved to take advantage of the poop there," said Nan-Yao Su, a University of Florida entomology professor and lead scientist and co-author of the study, along with Thomas Chouvenc, a University of Florida research associate.

Su also is the inventor of the popular Sentricon termite baiting and control system, which in 1995 became the first major alternative to liquid chemical treatments.

The findings could put an

end to 50 years of failed r e s e a r c h attempts to find a species of fungi that could kill termites when introduced into nests. Research r e p e a t e d l y s h o w e d t h a t f u n g i k i l l e d termites in a petri dish but not in the wild, Su said.

"Nobody was able to make it work in the field, but nobody would admit it," he said.

Su's goal was to find out why biological control never w o r k e d . H i s r e s e a r c h colleagues determined that Streptomyces bacteria that are found in the nests and feed on faecal matter may be producing b e n e f i c i a l a n t i m i c r o b i a l compounds that protect the termites from other potentially

toxic matter.Termi tes , mos t l y the

voracious Formosans, cause $40 billion worth of damage a year worldwide, eating through wood structures particularly in Japan, China and the United States, Su said.

By the time a house is infested, the underground termite nest typically is 300 feet in diameter, hosting several million termites with a biomass weight of approximately 30 pounds, the weight of a medium-sized dog.

In one example, termites took nine months to bring down a new house in Hawaii built in the 1970s inadvertently on top of an untreated termite colony, Su said.

Fur ther research wi l l attempt to discover a way to bypass the protective compounds to destroy the termites, and to determine whether the findings can lead to new antibiotics for humans to replace those which have become ineffective.

Dear Martha,

Me and my ex-girlfriend recently broke up on mutual terms and both decided to stay good friends. However, I still have heavy thoughts and very mixed emotions. The way she treated me and everything she did leading towards the breakup have caused me to lose a lot of trust and respect in her. I'm finding it difficult to remain good friends because I feel the trust which has been lost is still absent, thus making it hard for me to accept this new turn in our relationship.Despite trying vigorously to accept and move on, as each day passes I find myself feeling a mixture of bitterness, anger and sadness towards my ex-girlfriend and the relationship. There are so many things I want to say to her: how much she has hurt me, how I feel and all those emotions bottled up.She seems to be fine and happy after the breakup. A part of me doesn't want to see her suffer in any way. I am very happy to see she is coping well with the breakup and is able to persevere. However, there is also a part of me that feels extremely irritated - She mistreated me utterly and breached my trust, and here I am coping with the harsh consequences while she's out doing just fine. I think it is obvious I still have unresolved emotions towards all this – and because of this it might do me more harm than good if we decide to stay friends.Should I say anything or keep it to myself? Once I let it all out, will I then be able to move on? I'm afraid if I don't let her know how I feel and the pain she has caused it will stick with me forever. Should I act like an adult, be mature about this, not say anything and remain good friends?

Broken Man

Dear Broken Man

Should you remain good friends? God no. Why would you? Life can be testing enough without these sorts of trials. If it hurts to be around your ex; if being “friends” with her is now mostly an unhappy experience, then walk away.So what if it's immature? Would you be a better person if you put yourself through this test. Would you learn about yourself by learning to stay friends with her and work through these feelings. Maybe. But life is a marathon - hopefully - not a sprint - and there will be plenty of time for lessons dear!Maybe there will be a time in the future when you can meet and be mates again. But not now. And that's; healthy. Post breakup one of the most healing things you can do is simply not see the person who hurt you. It doesn't fix it overnight but over time it helps. You won't hurt like this forever. But you will certainly find it easier to get over things without her spectre hanging over your shoulder.

3 Oct - 9 Oct 2013Aries – March 21 to April 20Friday's Sun/Uranus opposition activates your rebellious side, as you push against perceived rules and restriction. Attached Rams – it's a wonderful weekend to let your partner know how much you really care. Show them that, beneath the bravado of the Aries warrior, beats the heart of a true romantic! Singles – look for true love with a lusty Leo or a lively Libran.

Taurus – April 21 to May 21Bulls detest disruptions … and there'll be plenty this week, as Uranus turns your usual schedule upside down. You need to inject some fresh ideas [and friends] into your regular routine. Plus the New Moon shines a bright spotlight on health issues. So it's time for hedonistic Bulls to leap off the couch and lift weights [rather than cream buns] as you get your body moving again.

Gemini – May 22 to June 21Keep on your toes this week – especially when it comes to children and teenagers. Expect surprises, hiccups and hijinks along the way. And have some of your friendships lost their sparkle? Perhaps it's time to link up with a creative new crowd? If you have to make a decision about work [or your future direction] be sure to balance intellectual reasoning with intuitive insights.

Cancer – June 22 to July 23Crabs can easily collapse in a heap after a setback. But, with buoyant Jupiter now jumping through your sign [until July 2014] it's time to bounce back as you put a positive spin on perceived failures; pick yourself up; and keep heading towards higher ground. Be inspired by birthday great, the writer Truman Capote “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.”

Leo – July 24 to August 23The Sun opposes Uranus this week, which boosts your restless, rebellious side – and your bossy, controlling streak. Plus, with the New Moon lighting up your communication zone, resist the temptation to jump in and hog the conversation. It's time for less talking and a lot more listening! As birthday great Truman Capote wrote “A conversation is a dialogue, not a monologue.”

Libra – September 24 to October 23The New Moon heralds that it's time for a hot new hairstyle; a makeup makeover; or a stylish wardrobe update. The stars also emphasize that being in a relationship doesn't have to come at the expense of your personal identity. The challenge is to get the balance right between give and take. [Just make sure you're not doing all the giving, and others all the taking!]

Scorpio – October 24 to November 22Scorpios are often drawn to extreme views, black and white thinking and confrontational communication. But the Libran New Moon encourages you to take a more balanced approach, as you contemplate the subtle shades of grey within each situation. You can also expect flashes of ESP, an insightful dream or a fateful deja-vu meeting with someone special.

Sagittarius – November 23 to December 21Dream big dreams Sagittarius, as the New Moon highlights your hopes and wishes zone. But make sure your creative plans aren't just surface gloss and glamour. Plenty of elbow grease [and the cooperation of others] is required if you want to turn your dreams into reality. You crave excitement and are impatient for change, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

Capricorn – December 22 to January 20Many Capricorns are style icons [like Marlene Dietrich, David Bowie, Diane Keaton and Kate Moss]. With Pluto in your sign, your personal style is gradually evolving so that it better expresses the real you. It's also time to reassess your career. Are you pursuing your professional dreams and heading in the right direction? If not, then some smart adjustments may be necessary.

Aquarius – January 21 to February 19Friday will be full of drama and surprises, as the Sun/Uranus opposition revs up your rebellious nature. Just make sure you're a rebel with a worthwhile cause! Attached Aquarians – you're in a passionate mood but consider the needs of your partner, not just your own. Sick of being single? Look for someone who respects your Aquarian need for autonomy and adventure.

Virgo – August 24 to September 23The New Moon stimulates your money zone, so you need to review financial matters and get up-to-date with detailed paperwork. The Sun/Moon Libra emphasis could also see virtuous Virgos overdose on trying to be absolutely perfect. Remember – perfection is a goal [not a destination]. Looking for your soul mate? True love could be as close as the boy or girl next door.

Pisces – February 20 to March 20Creativity and compassion are high as you express yourself artistically, or help someone in need. Avoid making impulsive money moves on Friday, when Uranus stirs up your finance zones. The New Moon promises exciting developments to do with lust or loot. Some flirtatious Fish can look forward to a hot new romance [or a revitalized old one] but there will be strings attached.

"Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick" is a song and single by Ian Dury and The Blockheads, first released 23 November 1978 and was first released on the 7" single BUY 38 Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick / There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards by Stiff Records. It went to number one on the UK Singles Chart in January 1979, and is the band's most successful single ever. It also was named best single of 1979 in the Pazz & Jop poll. Its lyrics mix various locations across the world and a number of phrases in non-English languages (including French and German). According to its author Ian Dury, the song has an anti-violence message.

HistoryCo-writer Chaz Jankel has repeated a story both in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll: The Life of Ian Dury and Ian Dury & The Blockheads: Song by Song that the song was written in Rolvenden, Kent during a jamming session between him and Dury. Jankel relates that the music was inspired by a piano part near the end of Wake Up And Make Love With Me (a song on Dury's solo debut New Boots and Panties!! that Jankel had co-written) and that after listening to it, Dury presented the lyrics for Rhythm Stick to him the same afternoon. This was later corroborated by Dury.

Dury mentioned a number of origins for his lyrics, including claiming that he had written them up to three years earlier and it had just taken him all that time to realize their quality. John Turnbull (guitar) gives a different account, claiming the lyrics were written while on tour in America six months prior to the song's recording and that he was still adjusting in-studio. He said the line "it's nice to be a lunatic" was originally "it don't take arithmetic".

Whilst researching his biography of Ian Dury (due for publication in 2010), Will Birch discovered that Ian wrote the lyrics for Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick as early as 1976. Ian's typed manuscript, which differs only slightly from the later recorded version and with hand written notes about arrangement and instrumentation ('drums and fuzz bass doing Roy Buchanan volume trick' after first chorus, for example), was posted to a friend in September of that year. The 'lunatic' line reads 'one two three fourithmatic'. 'O'er the hills and far away' was originally 'down to Hammersmith Broadway'.

The song was recorded in The Workhouse Studio on the Old Kent Road, London, the same place Dury's debut album, New Boots and Panties!!, was recorded. At least 11 takes of the song were recorded before one, reportedly an early take, was chosen for the single release. Mickey Gallagher (keyboards) remains jaded about this method and much of the band as well as producer Laurie Latham remain unhappy with the chosen take's mix, claiming it to be too dominated by piano and vocals. Despite this, Chaz Jankel often re-tells the story that after recording it he phoned his mother and told her, "I've just recorded my first number one".

On radio Rhythm Stick was a popular song from its release, but the single was initially kept from the number one spot in the charts by The Village People's smash hit YMCA (number one for five consecutive weeks). On the 27 January 1979, howwver, Watt-Roy, Turnbull and Charley Charles (drums) were waiting outside the Gaumont State Cinema, Kilburn, London, listening to a car radio

when it was announced that Rhythm Stick was the new number one. Dury was on holiday in Cannes, and was at the beach when the hotel staff brought him a bottle of champagne and told him the news. For their appearance on Top of the Pops the whole band bought Moss Bros suits. The promotional video for the single was hit by Laurie Lewis, a college friend of Dury, While the video simply showed the band performing on stage, it was significant for Dury who, for the first time, had appeared in public without his pink jacket or long sleeved shirt hiding his withered left arm.

In 2006 its popularity was boosted by its use in a British advertisement for Capital One. By November 2012 the single had sold 1.11 million copies in the UK. The single cover was designed by Stiff's Barney Bubbles, anonymously as usual.

Last year's Cup champions the Bush Turkeyz from the

Warning! Driving affects women's healthA Saudi sheik has warned women that driving cars would adversely affect the health of their ovaries and pelvises.

The comment comes as a group of women plan to defy the country's defacto ban on women drivers, sparked by a fatwah on the act that was issued in the 1990s.

The act of driving “could have a reverse physiological impact,” Sheikh al-Luhaydan said.

"Physiological science and functional medicine studied this side and found that it automatically affects ovaries and rolls up the pelvis. This is why we find for women who continuously drive cars their children are born with clinical disorders of varying degrees.

“The result of this is bad and they should wait and consider the negativities,” he said.

The sheik is a judicial and psychological consultant to the Gulf

P s y c h o l o g i c a l Association

Saudi activists have planned a day of female driving in protest to the ban.

Thousands of women have signed a declaration on oct26driving.com saying: “Since there are no clear justifications for the state to ban adult, capable women from driving. We call for enabling women to have driving tests and for issuing licenses for those who pass.”

A statement on the website says the campaign "has

for neither Islam nor the official laws of Saudi prohibit women from driving.

"Islam and the Basic Law of Saudi Arabia both ensure that all, regardless of gender, have the right to freedom of movement. King Abdullah has also stated that the ban is only societal," the statement says.

Spokeswoman for the Women2Drive movement behind the campaign, Manal al-Sharif, was arrested in May 2011 after uploading a video of herself driving through the streets of the city of Khobar in Saudi Arabia.

The ban has sparked continued commentary in popular culture. British rapper M.I.A. made headlines in 2012 with her video for the song "Bad Girls," which portrayed Saudi women stunt-driving cars in the desert and was taken as a criticism of the Saudi fatwa.

'Ocean's 16' winner curses Lotto winA couple who won

millions in the US Lotto have descr ibed the “ c u r s e ” o f t h e i r newfound riches.

New Jersey man Willie Seeley was one of 16 Oceans Country garage workers who became known as the 'Ocean's 16' after winning $450 million (US).

However, just a month after receiving the windfall and declaring he was “very happy, happy, happy”, Mr Seeley says he has a sense of regret over his change in fortune.

“There are days I wish we were back to just getting paid every two weeks,” Mr Seeley said.

“You have to change your whole way of life, but we didn't want to change the way we lived. We liked the way we lived.”

Mr Seeley said he had found it difficult to adjust to the “nonstop

drama” fo l lowing h is appearance in the media over the win.

“Would you want a camera following you around all day when you finally have the time to go hunting and fishing and do all the things you wanted to do?” he said.

While the couple will not return the cash, his wife Donna refers to the win “the curse”.

Mr Seeley became a crowd favourite after the win with his

and battered straw hat.He spoke publicly about

his plans to watch NASCAR races and buy a log cabin on several acres of land.

Mr Seeley appeared on televison the next morning where he declared he would fish and hunt as much as he wanted to.

“We can do what we want,” he said.

Mr Seeley has since shared some of the cash with family and helped fund cancer

treatment for his father. The couple have also splurged

on a Chrysler and a GMC pick-up and repaired their home which was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Mr Seeley has also purchased his dream home by buying a cabin on 15 acres of land where he hopes to shut out the many people who have become interested in him since he won Lotto.

Loss to Hawks a bitter end to season for Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich

return home to Adelaide, where he started out with Woodville-West Torrens.

The six-time All-Australian, who is in his seventh year as captain and 14th season overall at the Dockers, had only been to one preliminary final - a loss to Sydney in 2006 - and the grand final was seen as an opportunity to round out a stellar career.

B u t t h o s e h o p e s disappeared over four quarters at a windy MCG in front of 100,007 fans.

Victorious Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge paid tribute to Pavlich in his post-match speech.

For Matthew Pavlich, a year that was disrupted by injury came close to a perfect ending before fa l l ing agonis ing ly short.

"(We feel) extremely n u m b a n d s h a t t e r e d , disappointed to have let go of an opportunity, particularly since we felt our forward structure had let us down early," he told Grandstand.

" A l l c r e d i t t o Hawthorn, because they were an outstanding team all year, and probably have been for the best part of two years.

"They were able to execute better than we were today."

The 31-year-old came off an excellent year in 2012 with hopes of a similarly strong 2013.

But injuries forced him to miss nearly half the season, before he came back in the line-up in time for Fremantle's charge to the top four and stunning finals campaign.

Over the years, Pavlich has stuck with Fremantle through thick and thin, when many commentators - and some fans - might have expected him to

"The commitment and loyalty (you have shown) to your team is respected by the entire league," he said.

T h e acknowledgment from his rivals did not make the loss any easier to take for the Dockers' captain.

" A l l t h e r a w emotions are there and it's really hard to take right now but it's going to take a huge amount of hard work even to get back to this point," he said.

"I'm proud of the boys' efforts, but there's a lot of feedback today that we're going to have to get better and improve on what we did this year."

Asked whether the occasion had got to him and his team-mates, Pavlich said:

"It may have (got to us) ... I like to think it didn't overawe us too much, a 15-point loss would indicate that it didn't.

“But we're not about admirable losses ... we've missed a chance to win a flag, and it's bitterly hard to swallow."

Hawthorn Hawks pay tribute to fans at family dayHawthorn's captain and coach have paid tribute to the club's fans as they celebrate the side's 11th premiership success.

More than 10,000 fans crowded the club's former home ground Glenferrie Oval to congratulate players after yesterday's triumph over the Dockers at the MCG.

C o a c h A l a s t a i r Clarkson and midfielder Brad Sewell both said the side had to make amends for last year's loss to Sydney.

" D e f i n i t e l y h a v i n g experienced what we did 12 months ago was important, I think, and that sticks with you, it can't dissipate quickly at all," Sewell said.

"So there's no doubt that was drawn upon and we kept on improving throughout the year and learned off the back of that."

C a p t a i n L u k e H o d g e thanked the big crowd for coming to celebrate the win.

"To rock up here today and see so many of our fantastic supporters as I said yesterday you guys are the heart and soul of our footy club."

Norm Smith Medallist Brian Lake thanked the fans for embracing him in his first year with the club.

The Hawks downed Fremantle 11.11 (77) to 8.14 (62) in the premiership match yesterday in front of more than 100,000 fans.

Nine members of Saturday's winning side, including Hodge, have now played in two Hawthorn premierships, after also being part of the club's 2008 win.

Dog shoots man in boatA DOG is renowned for being a man's best friend.

B u t , i n y e t another case that bucks that statement, a dog has shot h is master.

A 19-year-old man was hunting birds on Leech River in Cass County in Minneapolis, on when the dog jumped into his boat.

Its paw found itself on the trigger and the dog blasted a cartridge into its owner's leg.

The hunter managed to call emergency services and was taken to Cass Lake Indian Health Services for treatment.

His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Cass County Sheriff's Office said after investigation by

Leech Lake Tribal Police Department there would be no action taken against the dog.

The shooting comes seven months after a 35-year-old Florida man Gregory Dale Lanier was also shot by his pooch after it kicked a pistol as they rode in a truck.

In September 2012 a French huntsman had to have his right hand amputated after

one of his dogs jumped up at him and caught the trigger of his shotgun.

T h e b l a s t , caused by a B lue Gascony Basset hound, blew off part of his hand while he was out near St Michel de Double, near Mussidan.

The 55-year-old man was f lown to hospital in Bordeaux and said he did not hold the

incident against his dog “at all”.In 2011, another Florida

man, Billy E. Brown, was shot once in the thigh by his dog as he drove to a deer hunting spot in Pasco County.

The 78-year-old was hit just above the right knee by his bulldog Eli after the animal became excited.

Spaniard Marc Marquez closed in on the MotoGP world championship in his rookie season with a sixth race victory of the year in the Aragon Grand Prix on Monday

Marquez, 20, passed reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo with 10 laps remaining to move 39 points ahead of his compatriot with just four races remaining.

Seven-time world champion Valentino Rossi was third as he held off pressure from Alvaro Bautista and Stefan Bradl in a fantastic battle for a place on the podium.

However, it was a disastrous day for Marquez's Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa as he crashed out seconds after he and Marquez touched wheels to all but end his championship hopes.

"I braked as I saw I was touching him (Pedrosa) so I went wide. Maybe I touched a cable of his but I am very disappointed for Dani. It is very bad luck for him because it is very rare that this happens."

As in many races this season it was Lorenzo who made the fastest start as he leap-frogged Marquez, who had started on pole, to move into the lead.

However, after losing some time as he ran wide in the collision with Pedrosa, Marquez was gaining on Lorenzo all the time and eventually made his move down the inside of the Yamaha rider with 10 laps remaining.

"I made an error as always at the start and that is something I have to improve on for the future races, but I only lost a second so I was able to be aggressive on the tyres and recover.

"It was a very tough race but in the end I'm delighted to get these very important points."

Lorenzo had pulled himself back into championship contention with back-to-back victories in Britain and San Marino heading into the race, but he admitted that after a shaky start Marquez had simply been the better man on the day.

"There are no excuses, Marc was faster than us and he was better," he said.

"I can only congratulate him and look forward to the next race."

With Marquez comfortably clear at the front, the real battle later in the race was for third, fourth and fifth position as Rossi, Bautista and Bradl continually changed position.

However, it was Rossi's experience that won out as the 34-year-old sealed his fourth podium finish of the season.

"It was a good race for me. I had to fight very hard at the end with Bradl and Bautista, but to be on the podium is always a good result."

Wild pigs menace suburban AtlantaW i l d p i g s h a v e d e s c e n d e d o n a s u b u r b a n A t l a n t a neighbourhood where they are scaring children, m a k i n g a g e n e r a l nuisance of themselves, and acting as they if they own the place.

One large specimen was s ighted rummaging through garbage it had strewn across Taneisha Danner's front yard in Lithonia, an area about 19 miles east of downtown Atlanta.

It then trotted into the backyard, taking a nap before returning with three other pigs from a patch of nearby woods.

"This is their home," Danner joked. "We're just visiting."

She said the animals were n o l a u g h i n g m a t t e r f o r neighbourhood children, however, noting that some were now afraid to

leave the safety of their homes.

"My children are even afraid to be downstairs, worried that he (the pig) could come through the door," Danner said.

Descendants of wild boar, the feral pigs are a particular pest in rural Georgia and notorious for damaging farmer's crops, said Charlie Killmaster, a deer and feral hog biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

There are so many hogs

flung wide open for wild pigs on private land, he said, adding that it was still fairly rare for them to show up in suburban neighbourhoods.

The population of one of t h e m o s t i n v a s i v e a n d destructive wild animals in the United States has grown rapidly in recent years, however. What was once a largely rural problem has blighted suburban areas in

other states as well. The hogs can be dangerous

to humans if they are cornered or if their young are threatened, Killmaster said.

"There is some level of danger associated with them," he added. "But in nearly all cases, steering clear of them is all you need to do."

Danner sa id she had complained to local authorities about the hogs and was told they were trying to find a private trapper to remove them.

Wallabies cannot take Argentina lightly after poor Rugby Championship, according to Quade Cooper

Wallabies fly half Quade Cooper is warning there is no quick fix for the team's troubling form under new coach Ewen McKenzie.

Ahead of their final Rugby Championship clash with Argentina in Rosario on Saturday, Cooper predicted there could be more pain before any real gain.

The Australians suffered a disappointing 28-8 loss to South Africa, let down by turnovers and missed tackles at crucial times.

It will be no easy task to beat the Pumas on home turf after they p u s h e d t h e w o r l d champion All Blacks for almost 60 minutes - leading early in the second half before a late 33-15 blowout.

C o o p e r w a s voted the Wallabies' players' player and worked hard in defence to stop the Springboks onslaught but looked more at home in attack alongside fellow Reds campaigner Will Genia, as opposed to Nic White.

He did not want to use excuses about a new coach or injured players to explain the dip in form.

"We can't keep using excuses. We've run out of excuses as a team in terms of how we go about each week," Cooper said.

"We've just got to put it down to hard work, sticking together as a team, backing our coach, backing our players and we've got to strive for more success."

"You have to look at yourself and find one thing in your game that you can work on, that you can contribute to the team, that will speed up the process of us improving as a team," he continued.

"We'll get there. It's all in due time but I urge everyone, it's not going to happen overnight.

"It's something that we've got to continue to be upbeat about but we've got to know that it's a tough process and it's something that will come but, right now, it's just not happening."

Australia held on for a one-point win over the Pumas in Perth earlier this month and the Wallabies are in for a fight on the weekend.

Cooper said, despite not

wining a game yet, the Pumas have improved since joining the Rugby Championship and Australia, given the form the side is in, could not afford to take them lightly.

The Wallabies were not able to hide from their first-half failings in their weekend Test loss to South Africa at Newlands with the side remaining on the field for the half-time break.

Like teams of old, the Australians grabbed some chairs and formed a semi-circle for a discussion about the first half, watched by the 46,000-strong crowd at the famed Cape Town ground.

There were not a lot of positives to talk about with the team trailing 23-3, before going on to an ultimate 28-8 loss.

McKenzie said he felt his team in recent Rugby Championship

games has been slow to start in the second half and he thought staying out among the fervour of the Springbok fans might help them stay in the moment.

They will do the same in Saturday's game at the Rosario ground in Argentina.

He added that because it was a soccer stadium, it would take them too long to get up to the change rooms.

"I felt that our weakness had been in the second half and we

were maybe relaxing too much in the d r e s s i n g r o o m , " McKenzie said.

"We weren't getting the outcome in the second half so I thought we'd stay out in the environment a n d t h e p l a y e r s enjoyed it.

"We've been doing it for the last 100 years and it's only in the last 10 that we've gone inside and it worked quite well."

W h e t h e r i t could be attributed to the unusual move, the Wallabies did deliver a much-improved second half, only allowing the home side to cross once."

McKenzie said he was open to trying new things to get the best out of his side.

But he did not go as far as giving them oranges.

"I was going to take oranges on but I didn't think the players would appreciate the humour."

The Wallabies endured a horror travel day following the Test, leaving their Cape Town hotel at 4am (local time) followed by an 11-hour flight to Buenos Aires and then a three-hour bus ride north to Rosario.
