The Kuranda Scenic Railway is an iconic two hour rail journey that meanders its way from Cairns or Freshwater Railway Station, through the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Barron Gorge National Park, to the quaint mountain village of Kuranda.

Enjoy breathtaking scenery, towering waterfalls and deep ravines as the train winds its way through 15 hand-made tunnels and over 37 bridges. Hear about the journey, the flora and fauna and the incredible history of the railway line through the multi-lingual audio commentary.

This historic railway line originally opened in 1891 and is an engineering feat that has stood the test of time. Up to 1500 men at a time armed only with hand picks, shovels and dynamite carved through mountainous and unforgiving landscape to construct the 37 kilometres of track.

The historic carriages of Kuranda Scenic Railway are hauled by dedicated 1720 class locomotives adorned in Buda-dji colours, which portrays the legend of the Buda-dji Carpet Snake, said to have carved out the Barron Gorge.

Take a Journey through the Rainforest

The journey from Cairns Railway Station takes approximately 2 hours to Kuranda Railway Station, which includes a 10 minute stop at the spectacular Barron Falls Station for a bird’s eye view of the Barron Falls.

Freshwater Railway Station offers a selection of delicious breakfast items, available at the cafe before your journey begins. Whilst in Kuranda, visit the Kuranda Railway Station Tearoom for a delicious mango smoothie and traditional Devonshire teas. The gift shops located at both stations offer a great selection of exclusive Kuranda Scenic Railway souvenirs.

Handy tips: Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes. A hat, sunglasses, water, sunscreen, carry bag and camera are also recommended.
