OUR BISHOP SPEAKSNO EXPECTATION

Respected and dear brother-priests, religious and laity,There once lived a man so godly that even the angels rejoicedat the sight of him. But, inspite of his great holiness, he had nonotion that he was holy. He just went about his humdrum tasksdiffusing goodness the way flowers unselfconsciously diffusetheir fragrance and street-lamps their glow.His holiness lay in this that he forgot each person's past andlooked at them as they were now, and he looked beyond eachperson's appearance to the very centre of their being wherethey were innocent and blameless and too ignorant to knowwhat they were doing. Thus he loved and forgave everyone hemet and he saw nothing extraordinary in this for it was the re-sult of his way of looking at people.One day an angel said to him, "I have been sent to you by God.Ask for anything you wish and it will be given to you. Would youwish to have the gift of healing?" "No," said the man, "I'd ratherGod did the healing himself.""Would you want to bring sinners back to the path of righteous-ness?" "No," he said, "it is not for me to touch humanhearts. That is the work of angels.""Would you like to be such a model of virtue that people will bedrawn to imitate you?" "No," said the saint, "for that would makeme the centre of attention.""What then do you wish for?" asked the angel. "The grace ofGod," was the man's reply. I regret to inform you that Rev. Fr. A.J. Durai passed awayon Tuesday the 13th September 2016 at Kumbakonam. Theconcelebrated Requiem High Mass presided over by MostRev. F. Antonisamy, D.D., S.T.L., Bishop of Kumbakonam washeld at St. Mary's Cathedral, Kumbakonam on Wednesday 14thMay 2016 at 11.30 A.M. His mortal remains were interred in theCemetery in the Cathedral Campus.

You are requested to offer THREE MASSES for therepose of his soul.

Salient points of the Senate held on 29.08.2016 in theBishop's House, Kumbakonam.

1. A Core group consisting of Rev. Fr. P. Henry Pushparaj,Fr. S.I. Arulsamy, Fr. A. Roch Alexander and Fr. T. Xaviersupported by Synod group consisting of Fr. A. Amirthasamy V.G.,Fr. P. Singarayar and Fr. L. Selvakumar will prepare theguidelines for the Diocesan Pastoral Synod.

2. The pastoral guidelines will be distributed to the Vicariatesfor discussion. In the discussion the religious and laity are tobe involved.

3. The task of bringing the parishes under A,B,C categories hasbeen handed over to a Committee consisting of Councilmembers and the diocesan auditor.

4. The mode of appointing priests in A,B,C categories will bediscussed in the General Body Meeting.

5. Twice a week the office clerk will visit the parishes forcollecting the slab.

6. We will have a meeting of all the Religious Fathers andBrothers who are ministering in our diocese.

7. We will have a get-together of all the Provincials of thereligious Congregations working in our diocese.

8. The list of the students who are doing their professionalstudies with the subsidy of our diocese will be published inour Diocesan News Letter.

9. A committee comprising Fr. A. Amirthasamy, V.G.,Fr. T. Devadoss, Fr. M. A. Susaimanickam,Fr. A. Kulandainathan and Fr. K. Amaidhi Arasu will work out



the fee structure for the Sacraments and Sacramentals.

10. According to our diocesan statute only after the rectificationof the irregular marriage we can baptize a child. Ifrectification is not possible we can baptize the child onlyafter the child has reached the age of reason i.e. 7. If givingbaptism to such a child will cause a scandal to theparishioners, the baptism is to be given in anotherparish with the permission of the concerned parish priest.

11. The priests are not allowed in our diocese to celebratefuneral Mass for those who commit suicide. With regard tothe blessing of the body at the house or in thecemetery the local custom is to be followed.

12. If there is a discrepancy in the name and date of birthbetween baptism register and the civil records of theconcerned person, we have to go by the baptism register.The concerned person can get the remedy by changing hisor her name through Government Gazette. When there is adifference in the date of birth we can only mention the age ofthe concerned person while issuing the marriage certificate.

13. All the priests are expected to attend the Annual Retreat.

14. We shall celebrate the Christmas in all our parishes andinstitutions in a creative and meaningful way.
