BISHOP SPEAKSPRAYER AND PENANCE HAVE THE POWER TO

WORK MIRACLESMy dear brother-priests, religious and laity,

We are entering into the Season of Lent. Let this lentbe a season of miracles for all of us.

All of us, the young as well as the old often expectmiracles in their lives. Prayer and penance have the powerto work wonders.

Our beloved Holy Father Pope Francis in his homily, onMonday, May 20, 2013, spoke of a miracle that took place inArgentina.

The Pope said, "I remember something that happenedthree years ago in the sanctuary of Lujan." A little girl of sevenwas ill, but the doctors couldn't help She was getting worseuntil one evening the doctors said there was nothing else to bedone and she only had a few hours to live.

Her Father, who was an electrician, a believer, wentcrazy. And driven by that madness, he jumped on the bus andwent to the sanctuary of Lujan, a two-and-a half-hour journey,seventy kilometres away. He arrived at nine in the evening andfound everything was shut. And he began to pray with his handsgrasping the iron gate. He prayed and wept. He stayed therelike that all night. That man was fighting with God. He wasfighting with God himself to cure his little girl. Then at seven in


the morning he went to the terminal and got the bus. He arrivedat the hospital at about nine o'clock. He found his wife cryingand feared the worst. What has happened? I don't understand.What has happened? His wife answered, the doctors cameand told me that the fever had gone, she is breathing well, sheis all right... They are keeping her just for another two days. Butthey don't understand what happened. And that, said the Pope,"Still happens. Miracles still happen. But prayer is important!"

Penance can also work wonders. In the Book of Jonah we readin 3:1-10, the great sinners of Nineveh made penance for fortydays and on the fortieth day a miracle happened. What is thatmiracle? God appeared before the people of Nineveh andforgave all their sins and accepted them as his children.

The most difficult part of prayer is to allot time forprayer. The most difficult part of penance is to allot timeto sit in silence and examine our conscience.

During the time of Lent certainly our time-management will take us all to a world of miracles.
