Nutraceutical, a portmanteau ofnutrition and pharmaceutical, refers to extracts of foods claimed to have a medicinal effecton human health.

The nutraceutical is usually contained in a medicinal formatsuch as a capsule, tablet or powder in a prescribed dose.

More rigorously, nutraceutical implies that the extract or foodis demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provideprotection against a chronic disease.

Functional foods are defined as being consumed as part of ausual diet but are demonstrated to have physiological benefitsand/or reduce the risk of chronic disease beyond basicnutritional functions.

Examples of claims made fornutraceuticals are :

    (1) resveratrol from redgrape products as anantioxidant,

    (2) soluble dietary fiber products, such as psylliumseed husk for reducinghypercholesterolemia

    (3) broccoli (sulforaphane) as a cancer preventative,

    (4) soy or clover (isoflavonoids) to improve arterialhealth. Such claims are being researched and manycitations are available viaPubMed to ascertaintheir foundation of basic research.

    Other nutraceutical examples are

    (4) flavonoids antioxidants,(5) alpha-linolenic acid from flax seeds,

    (6) beta-carotene from marigold petals,

    (7) anthocyanins from berries, etc.

With the US Dietary Supplement Health andEducation Act (DSHEA), several other compoundswere added to the list of supplements originally

mentioned in FDA notification. Thus, manybotanical and herbal extracts such asginseng, garlicoil, etc. have been developed as nutraceuticals.

Function:A phenylpropanoid, an ester of caffeic acid, two molecules of whichand two sugar molecules being involved.

The glycoside antioxidant for foods, drugs, cosmetics, etc.Is manufd.

Verbascoside demonstrated an inhibitory effect on protein kinase C(PKC) that could explain in part the antitumor activity measured invitro. An antiproliferative effect on aortic smooth muscle could result ina preventive effect on arteriosclerosis.

More generally, verbascoside-type phenolic ester glycosides showed

various biological activities, from antibiotic and antifeedant toimmunodepressive.
