E veryday, we enter the hal-lowed halls o the universityand believe we get our educa-tionnurtured and ed with

inormation needed in the proessions we have chosen. We accept our posi-tions as receivers in the transaction oknowledge, a setup integrated in ourconsciousness as natural and normal.

Aer all, we get something invaluablerom the university.

With these notions in mind, we ndit hard to skip classes, to leave the class-room or trivial reasons. We eel boundto our seats out o gratitude or oureducation.

Blinded by our gratitude, it takes agreat orce to jolt us out o our acceptedrealities and see our everyday in a newlight: we keep the learning institutionsrunning by our mere presence. Tecessation o school, then, is possiblethrough student upheaval. I every stu-dent reuses to go to his or her classes, the school is as good as an empty struc-ture bere o purpose.

(Un)productivityTe concept o halting classes can

be likened to the stoppage o produc-tion by workers, commonly called astrike. Holding a strike in actories haddevastating eects on production andthus reduced, i not completely oblit-erated, the prot made by capitalists.Te logic governing strikes is oundedon the basic relations between actoryowner and laborers; the capitalists takeadvantage o the work input o laborers

to accumulate prot.Tough there appears to be historicevidence o a strike by Egyptian arti-sans around 1152 BC, the term strike

was rst used when English merchant

Halting classesis an opportu-nity to imagine

possibilities ofa new realitya reality thatbreaks awayfrom the dog-mas of the cur-rent order.

    Empty the Halls

sailors debilitated a ship in 1768 in pro-test o harsh working and living condi-tions. Since then, the term strike has

reerred to an organized stoppage owork or production by laborers, a tacticemployed by workers to orce their em-ployers to address their demands and

work grievances. When production is put to rest,

the whole economic base is disturbedwhile the political atmosphere is stifed with tension. Tere are no goods tobe sold in the market, the governmentcannot extract tax rom purchases andthe public is drawn to the problemsaced by the ordinary laborer.

Indeed, strikes have become in-strumental in alleviating the workersplight. It comes as no surprise thatstrikes are regulated, even orbidden,in some o the worlds leading coun-tries in the manuacturing businesssuch as China and the Unites States o

America. Inevitably, other sectors haveadopted the workers deant display ocollective collection, calibrated to at-tain their own causes.

    CounterfowStudents who hold strikes oen

come rom state-supported schools. In these cases, strikes are oen held to

demand larger state unding or protestdiminishing budget or social servicessuch as education.

As in a labor strike, a student strikeaims to cripple school operations andrender schools useless. Te organizedstoppage o the production o knowl-edge within the hallowed halls o theuniversity is not an exercise o anarchyor simple student disobedience, ratherit is a symbolic act meant to taunt thestate and demonstrate the power o thestudents.

Tough the students seem to be atthe receiving end in the education sys-tem, they are actually orces needed bythe state to propagate certain ideolo-gies. In other words, under the tutelageo state apparatuses, students becomecarriers o the status quo. In the Phil-ippines, the status quo or tertiaryeducation has been dely described bythe government as controlled by theprivate sector. Tus, state universitiesand colleges (SUCs) are slowly trans-ormed to imitate private universities.Te initial step in this program is thereduction o unding or SUCs.

Moreover, as the education systemproduces subservient employees out oits students, a strike actually becomes a

venue or students to subvert the statesplans or them. Te strike, aer all, isnot only a disruption in the productiono knowledge and docile employees; italso serves as a break or students toexamine the system that has swallowedthem all their lives. Halting classes isan opportunity to imagine possibilitieso a new realitya reality that breaksaway rom the dogmas o the currentorder.

In an essay, John Berger notes thatmass actions such are rehearsals ordrastic societal changes where the ma-

jority will steal political power romthe ruling ew. For a student strike, therehearsal goes deeper by another layer.Te students, who are actually mem-

bers o the labor orce in transition, already practice organizing themselves

against oppression. In the process, theyre-educate themselves and discoverthat gratitude does not drive them to

be compliant; it is the years o educa-tion itsel.

Te impact o a strike lies on thedamage it deals on the daily grind oactories or schools. O course, thesuccess o mass actions is largely deter-mined by the number o people who

join the action. Te ormula, is simple:the magnitude o success is proportion-al to the number o protesters.

In a strike, the dynamics o powerand the everyday lie are reversedthrough collective action. Certainly, astrike is a desirable alternative to themonotony o oppression and state ne-glect.q

In Pursuitof JusticeThe image of the brutal massacre is

hard to forget: a road leading to a massgrave crammed with bodies, cars andother vehicles including a backhoe is-sued by the provincial engineers office ofMaguindanao, allegedly used to bury the

victims.Scenes of the senseless carnage haunt-

ed newspapers and news programs forweeks after, the grim reality of the extentto which one political clan in the south had

consolidated power, to the point that theyenjoyed immunity and support from then-President Gloria Arroyo herself.

A year later, the images have changed, but the story remains: private armies con-

tinue to run rampant; the trial is ongoing, with no convictions in sight; and the fami-

lies of victims are still searching for justiceamidst a culture of impunity and violence.

The massacre of 58 people, including

32 journalists, in broad daylight thecrime drew international and nationaloutrage, yet justice is moving at an un-bearably slow pace. The families of thevictims, who have bravely lobbied against

the might of the Ampatuans, still yearn forthe conviction of murderers who have longbeen identified by various witnesses andevidence. From investigations, pieces ofthe story came together. How the private

armies of the Ampatuans blocked the wayof more than fifty people on the way tofile a certificate of candidacy from a con-tending clan, how the Ampatuan familypolished plans of the mass murder overdinner. Indeed, the identity of the per-

petrators is no longer a mystery. Despitethis fact, the families continue to yearn forjustice, and no conviction had ever beenmade since the case opened last year.

    Aquinos administration has promised

the people many things, including justicefor those oppressed and victimized by the Arroyo regime. Yet, the motion for thelive coverage of the trial is still pending incourt, and witnesses continue to fear for

their lives because the government couldnot provide adequate protection.

In addition, there seems to be no pun-ishment for the president responsible forthe proliferation of private armies. These

groups of armed men, formed by feudallords to maintain their political clout in theprovinces, unquestioningly carry out theirmasters wisheseven the murder of 58people. These orchestrations of power are

typical of Arroyos regime, which is pock-marked with countless killings and humanrights violations.

The details of the crime have been laidout, yet the murderers who dared the mas-

sacre, believing themselves invincible, arebeing proven right. To date, they are stillpresumed innocent. Their power in theirlocalities persists, with the guilty seeminglyconvinced that all this will blow over.

Let these culprits be proven wrong.Justice for these families necessitates the

speedy resolution of the case. At the rate

the trials are going, the case could dragon for decades, an inappropriate response

to the shocking deaths of November 23.Moreover, the government should move todismantle the paramilitary groups hired bypolitical families such as the Ampatuans,as proof that the government does not

coddle violence on the countryside and theruthless display of power.

This day marks a year of mourning forthe 58 killed in the Maguindanao mas-sacre. We mourn the loss of lives caught

in the line of duty, of women and childrenslaughtered for the pursuit of power. Andin our grief, we do not forget. For the im-age of violence lingers a grim reminderthat justice has not yet been served, a

challenge to all of us to remember themassacre, and fight to see the culpritspunished, the culture of impunity ended.

tennial project ng UP na inaprubahanng Board of Regents noong Agosto2007.

    UP Baler

year sa UP Baler.

upang maglingkod bilang manggaga- wang pangkalusugan.
