RIEDEL – Precision cooling for medical technology
Precision cooling systems by RIEDEL have become the standard in
modern medical equipment.
Advantages such as consistent operating safety, compact design,
and optimal temperature precision make our universal cooling
modules ideal for apparatus and equipment that require constant
and highly precise low internal temperatures in order to ensure
optimal image quality or for safety reasons. This applies, for exam-
ple, to computed and magnetic resonance tomography, as well as
lithotripsy and X-ray technology, where air-conditioning of the
switch cabinets, inductors, boosters, or compressors with their
complex computational and analytical electronics is essential for
increased data security and optimal image quality. High tempera-
ture accuracy, compact and space-saving design, and virtually
maintenance-free, dependable operation are crucial quality crite-
ria for RIEDEL cooling technology.
Technical highlights of customized RIEDEL cooling solutions include
progressively adjustable output control, integrated microelectronic
interfaces for communication with customer control elements, diagno-
sis and maintenance systems, and the certification according to inter-
national standards (UL/CSA).

Cooling solutions for computer tomography
The RIEDEL cooling units used in computer tomography are
responsible for cooling the entire gantry, including the drive
system, detectors, and signal processors for raw data capture, as
well as cooling the emitter, which converts up to 98% of its energy
into heat.
Properly cooling the emitter is crucial for ensuring consistent,
long-term performance.
Cooling solutions for magnetic resonance tomography
In magnetic resonance tomography, our cooling units are used on
gradient coils, gradient amplifiers, radio frequency amplifiers, the
helium compressor, and for air conditioning the control panels.
By cooling and air conditioning all these components, RIEDEL is
responsible for increased data security and optimal image quality.
RIEDEL cooling systems and components are modified individually to
meet these specific requirements and developed for series produc-
tion. RIEDEL has become the number one in the world for industrial
cooling solutions, with skilled series production that is certified in
accordance with standards such as UL/CSA, CE, EMC, and 2M2.

Cooling solutions for urology and pain therapyIn ESWT (extracorporeal shockwave therapy/lithotripsy), cooling
units are used to cool the water circulating within the shockwave
therapy devices. RIEDEL cooling units are developed and manu-
factured either as installed cooling units or freestanding devices,
depending on the original equipment being used.
Cooling solutions for X-ray technology and cardiology
In X-ray technology, continuous emitter loads lead to a heat build-
up, which is reliably dissipated by RIEDEL cooling units. This leads
to increased product life for the emitter and ensures acceptable
performance over the long term.
In cardiology, RIEDEL cooling units ensure that the catheter used
in coronary angiography is maintained at a temperature that is
comfortable for the patient, which also increases patient safety.
RIEDEL cooling units are therefore designed to meet the highest
levels of operational reliability and are subjected to endurance
tests.
Oil-cooled units are primarily used in this field, with either internal
or external heat exchangers as required.
Cooling solutions for medical laser technologyLasers are used primarily within the medical fields of ophthalmo-
logy, dermatology, surgery, and urology. Inside medical lasers, the
laser source, lenses, and fiber couplings are cooled using OEM
cooling elements that have either been specially modified or
developed according to customer-specific requirements.

The water circulation system (piping, evaporator, and pumps) is designedfor a defined volume flow. A variety of pumps by renowned manufacturersare available for different performance levels. These pumps are selectedwith regard to the geometry of the housing and the design limits in termsof flow technology and capacity requirements.Depending on the requirements, the pipes used are made of copper or pla-stic (PVC or ABS), steel, or stainless steel. The material selection is basedon the flow rate and refrigerant, as well as pressure and transport flowtemperatures. All process chillers can be supplied with PVC piping uponrequest - this is standard as of PC 1401. PVC piping is optional for smallersystems. The use of ABS is recommended for water temperatures below 0 °C and outdoor installations.
The evaporatorThe evaporator usually is a plate heatexchanger soldered with copper.Depending on their design, these systemsrequire high internal flow rates. Thesehigh flow rates, which are generated bythe plate structure, the gap widths, andthe arrangement of the accessories, result in extremely good thermal transferperformance. At the same time, the highflow rate ensures that the narrow ductsdo not become clogged.
ElectronicsThe electronics are housed in a sealedcontrol box as part of the process chiller. The unit contains the complete powersupply for all components and the corre-sponding controls. For the planners andoperators of recirculating coolingsystems, RIEDEL offers system technologythat is highly efficient, yet uncomplicated. No specialized technical knowledge isrequired to operate the system if it is con-figured correctly.
System design criteriaThanks to the sophisticated design and component coordination in stan-dard RIEDEL process chillers, operators and planners do not need specia-lized technical knowledge. However, a more detailed examination of thecomponents is helpful for a general understanding.
Functional principle of a RIEDEL process chillerThe process chiller system is based on the interaction of three main com-ponents: the refrigerant circulation system, the water circulation system, and the electrical controls unit. The primary pump draws in the water thathas been warmed by the cooling receiver unit and moves it through theevaporator. Here, the liquid refrigerant has a counter-current flow withrespect to the water. Due to the different temperatures of the two materialflows, the refrigerant evaporates by absorbing the heat from the receiverunit. The now gaseous refrigerant is drawn up by the compressor and

RIEDEL process chillers consist of three components, the “refrigerationcirculation system”, “water circulation system”, and “electrical controltechnology”, which are all fully integrated into a single housing. The coldwater is cooled with the help of a plate heat exchanger as the evaporator.Even the basic versions of RIEDEL chillers come fully equipped and readyto use. A comprehensive package of options is available to meet custo-mer-specific requirements, and in addition, specially customized solutionsare available. These systems cover a broad range of applications:Water temperatures from 8 ºC to 25 ºC, ambient temperatures from 5 ºC to50 ºC (refrigerant-dependent). Other application requirements can beaccommodated upon request. The careful coordination of all componentsmakes a broad range of applications possible, in contrast to the "one-size-fits-all" cooling systems, such as are intended for air-conditioning.
The refrigeration circulation systemThe refrigeration circulation system essentially consists of the evaporator, compressor(s), air-cooled condenser, collector, and the expansion valve.Water-cooled condensers are also available depending on process requi-rements. The compressors work in parallel to enable energy-saving partialload operation.Refrigeration circulation systems with refrigerants R134A or R407C (R404Aupon request). The compressor, ventilator, and evaporator components aresupplied by renowned manufacturers, and guarantee system reliabilitywith their proven design and global availability.
Integrated control panelThe control panel is integra-ted into the housing; it con-tains the electrical powercomponents and the micro-processor-controlled tempe-rature regulators, and isdesigned for industrial use.Control panel cooling is available for use in warmerclimates. Options are alsoavailable for outdoor installa-tions at more northerly latitu-des, and ventilation or hea-ting of the control panel might be useful or even essential, depending onthe ambient conditions. The corresponding equipment components areavailable upon request.
