Malaysia’s electricity generation mix has always been highly dependent on fossil fuels. More than 12,000MW of new capacity will be commissioned between 2015 and 2020 in addition to the recently commissioned TNB power plant Janamanjung U4 of 1,010MW of generation capacity.

Demand for electricity is projected to grow at a rate of 3% to 4% annually, which requires the transmission system to be further upgraded and expanded. The electricity demand forecast indicates a marginal decrease in electricity demand in Peninsular Malaysia compared to previous years’ demand forecast. Peak demand is projected to reach 23GW by the year 2025 while total installed generation capacity connected to the transmission system will be around 29GW.

*Source extracted from Energy Commission-Peninsular Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry Outlook 2016

Between 2040 and 2050, Asia's electricity generation capacity will surpass North America and Europe's combined, according to WEC. Regional energy integration in Asia can play a key role in securing reliable, affordable and sustainable energy by linking clean energy resource centres to demand hubs.

*Source extracted from Petroleum Economist http://www.petroleum-economist.com/articles/events/wec-istan-bul-2016/2016/cooperation-needed-to-boost-asian-electricity

The energy projection had shown a continued increase in electricity production for the year to come. Malaysia electricity production is also projected to be increased with a growth rate of 5.3% from 2005 to 2030.

By 2040, Southeast Asia’s total electricity generation almost triples from 789 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2013 to about 2,200 TWh in 2040.

*Source extracted from IOP Science

*Source extracted from Southeast Asia Energy Outlook 2015

The total primary energy demand of Southeast Asia rises by 80% in the period 2013 to 2040. The region’s economy more than triples in size and an increasing share of its population moves to urban areas, driving up the demand for modern energy services.

Electricity generation grows 4% per year on average to reach 400 TWh in 2040. Most of the growth comes from coal-fired power plants, with coal overtaking natural gas around 2020 as the main source of power generation. By 2040, coal represents almost 60% of the power mix. Total installed power generation capacity increases from 32 GW in 2014 to about 85 GW in 2040.

Malaysia is blessed with vast renewable energy sources of energy such as biomass, solar, biogas, and mini hydro. In line with the Five-Fuel Strategy, the policy has a target of RE being the source of 11% of electricity generation, which amounts to 2.080MW of installed capacity by 2020.

*Source extracted from Energy Commission-Peninsular Malaysia Electricity Supply Industry Outlook 2016

The RE Market in Malaysia is expected to grow to nearly 1GW by 2015, 2GW by 2020, 4GW by 2030 and eventually 21GW by 2050. Biomass would dominate the total capacity until 2020, accounting for nearly 40% of the addition as small hydro and solid waste plants reach their maximum capacity. Solar PV will be the dominant source of energy post-2020 taking up 30% of the total capacity by 2030.*Source extracted from Malaysia Energy, Green Technology & Water Industry Directory

Renewable Energy (RE) is expected to play a larger role in Malaysia with two regulatory frameworks in place: the Renewable Energy Act 2011 and Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Act 2011.

An ambitious plan has also been drawn up whereby RE should account 95MW or 5.5% share of the energy mix by 2015, compared to its current share of below 1%. By 2020, the target for RE to contribute 11% or 2,080MW of overall electricity generated in the country.

“Smart” Target for Renewable Energy. These SMART targets are conservative assessment of Malaysia’s RE Resources.

Notes: to Table 5.7:1. The maximum potential can be realised from palm oil EFB and agro-based industry;

2. The maximum potential can be realised from POME, agro-based and farming industries;

3. The maximum potential can be realised from mini-hydro.

The assumptions used in Table 5.7 are:1. RE plant lifespan is 25-30 years, whereby old plants will be replaced or upgraded

2. RE Technical potential: i. Biomass (EFB, agro-based): 1,340 MW will be reached by 2028. ii. Biogas (POME, agro-based, farming): 410 MW will be reached by 2028. iii. Mini-hydro (not exceeding 30 MW): 490 MW will be reached by 2020. iv. Solar PV (grid-connected): unlimited. v. Solid waste (RDF, incineration, sanitary landfill): 378 MW will be reached by 2024 (at

30,000 tonne/day of solid waste as projected by KPKT, followed by 3% annual growth post 2024).
