Hands-on artwork will see participants building mountains out of sand

A new participatory artwork connecting the public to the world's mountain ranges will be touring the UK next year.

First There Is A Mountain, by Katie Paterson, will see the public invited to build mountains of sand across the coastlines and play out the world's natural geographyagainst a series of tidal times.

Each bucket is a scale model of five of Earth's mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (USA), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe), and Uluru (Oceania).

Katie Paterson says: "From early childhood we understand that sand marks time. First There is a Mountain builds upon this concept, making us aware of mountainrocks' erosion over millennia, rock shifting across Earth over continent's evolution, forming unique fingerprints of sand across our modern coastline. The artwork invitesthe public to slow down. To consider the interconnectedness of the world, its immensity conveyed in miniature. Connecting the archipelago via one water, one tide, onesand - carrying mountains of sand across time. The extraordinary existing in ordinary things, everywhere."

First There Is A Mountain will take place at Glenbrittle Brittle Beach on 21 July 2019.

Artist Katie Paterson joins Whitstable Biennale with First There is a Mountain project

A mountain range made entirely from sand is to be built on a stretch of Kent's coastline and families in the county are being asked to help. The project called First There is a Mountain will see a north Kent beach transformed into an enormous sand sculpture as participants mould the area into thousands of mountains of sand to form micro-geologies. Created by Scottish artist Katie Paterson, First There is a Mountain is being launched in Kent - at Leysdown Beach on the Isle of Sheppey on March 31 - ahead of a seven month UK tour of coastal locations.

1 Folkestone Triennial, Kent Every three years, site-specifi c outdoor artworks by leading contemporary

artists are commissioned for the Folkestone Triennial (next in 2020) – and many become permanent fi xtures. This spring, 15 installations from the 2017 festival have been rehomed around the town, including pieces by Antony Gormley, David Shrigley and Lubaina Himid. One of the new acquisitions refl ects the artist’s concern about climate change: Bill Woodrow’s The Ledge is a white steel sculpture of an Inuit fi gure and a seal on a thin layer of ice. It joins existing work by artists including Tracey Emin, Yoko Ono and Cornelia Parker, ta king the town’s total to 45. 2 World record attempt, Cornwall The Newlyn School of Art has partnered with the National Trust

for a Guinness World Record attempt: the most people painting a landscape outdoors at the same time. The mass installation, called Art For Good, will take place on the cliff s between Land’s End and Sennen Cove, with several hundred people – from beginners to professional artists – expected to pick up a paintbrush. Each will wear a coloured hat and be evenly spaced, so that from an aerial perspective they’ll form a dotted line intended to look like a footpath on an OS map. The money raised will be used to create a new cliff top path, and the plein-air painting will be followed by a mass beach clean. It is the fi rst in a series of annual large-scale art events planned by the art school to raise awareness of environmental issues. Those who want to hone their skills in advance can sign up for a monthly painting workshop at the NT-owned Nymans in West Sussex (£70, next workshops 27-29 June). • £2, 1 September, registration details will be available soon at artforgood.co.uk

3 Chihuly at Kew, London Dale Chihuly, the celebrated US glass artist, exhibited at Kew Gardens 13

years ago. It was his most recent major outdoor show in Europe – and one of the most popular exhibitions ever held at Kew. Now he is back with Chihuly: Refl ections on nature – 32 dazzling installations, including his Sapphire Star, the Seaforms series and a new work specially designed for the Temperate House, which recently reopened after £41m restoration. From August, the gardens will open late for selected Chihuly Nights, when the artworks will be illuminated and set to music. 4 Yorkshire Sculpture International This major new sculpture festival

kicks off this summer, with exhibitions and events at the venues that comprise the Yorkshire sculpture triangle – Leeds Art Gallery, the Hepworth Wakefi eld and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park – and there will be new public artworks in Leeds and Wakefi eld city centres. The festival will take place every three years: this inaugural event is curated by sculptor Phyllida Barlow. In addition, the Hepworth Wakefi eld is opening the Riverside Gallery Garden this summer, designed by landscape archite ct Tom Stuart-Smith. 5 First There is a Mountain, touring Conceptual artist Katie Paterson has a new participatory work travelling

around the UK over the summer . She has made a set of (compostable) buckets, one in the shape of each of fi ve famous mountains : Kilimanjaro, Shasta, Fuji, Stromboli and Uluru. The pails will tour to 25 coastal art venues, which are also staging mass sandcastle-building events on local beaches. The public are invited to build the miniature mountains and then watch them

6 People’s Landscapes, Cheshire, Dorset, Derbyshire and Manchester The National Trust is commemorating

the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre with an artistic programme called People’s Landscapes, exploring places and people that have shaped England. The project is being overseen by Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller. In Dorset, the artist Bob and Roberta Smith is running painting workshops to celebrate the Tolpuddle Martyrs, forerunners of the trade union movement in Britain. In the Peak District, musician Jarvis Cocker has designed a guided walk “with artistic surprises” along the route taken by the Kinder Scout protesters in 1932. Artists Gary Winters and Grace Surman and their

two children are creating work inspired by Peterloo to be displayed at Quarry Bank in Cheshire and Dunham Massey in Greater Manchester. Meanwhile, Amber, a fi lm and photography collective, is exploring the Durham Coast’s mining heritage. Das Bauhaus Museum in Dessau ist in diesem Jahr ein Fixtermin für Archi-tekturaffine. A MOUNTAIN OUT OF…

‘Homelands’ features photography from James Sebright and it looks at the lives and livelihoods of the Cham diaspora. You can see it at the Oriental Museum.

Historically, the Cham people enjoyed a rich culture, their territory including several kingdoms in what is today Central and Southern Vietnam. However, the Champa Kingdoms began disintegrating following decisive defeats by the Vietnamese in the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, starting a pattern of migration and flux that is still going on. Today, Cham are offi cially recognised as one of Vietnam and China’s minority ethnic groups, but remain marginalised, both culturally and economically, especially when compared to the dominant Han Chinese and ethnic Kinh Vietnamese peoples. In 2016, photographer James Sebright travelled around the South China Sea region, meeting Cham communities in China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia.

DOCUMENTING THE CHAM DIASPORA

Tyneside bound‘Arrivals: Making Tyneside Home’ is an exhibition of portraits by Jeremy Abrahams that celebrate the people who have moved to Tyneside since 1939.

“Immigration has always been part of our lives in society and, of course, it always will be.” That’s Jeremy Abrahams, and it’s his photographic portraits that make up this exhibition which is now showing at the Discovery Museum. A tribute to Tyneside’s diverse population, the exhibition features a powerful series of portraits that document the experience of people who have migrated to the region from overseas. Fancy getting involved in a new participatory artwork this summer? There are beaches involved…

Earlier this year artist Kate Paterson launched ‘First There is a Mountain’, an artwork which invites the public to build mountains of sand across the UK coastline. Five special pails have been created which are scale models of fi ve of the Earth’s most famous mountains: Stromboli (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Shasta (USA), Fuji (Asia) and Uluru (Oceania). At each event participants will use the pails to sculpt beaches into hundreds of mountains to form micro-geologies. The event aims to be a poetic vehicle that connects diverse world mountains to the smallest grains of sand, with participants holding the world’s geography in their hands, time and geology collapsing, and connecting through touch. The UK’s fi rst exhibition to explore the reality of the refugee crisis through illustration has opened in Sunderland.

Curated by House of Illustration this exhibition documents refugee journeys, both observed and experienced fi rst hand, from 2015-2018, a time when wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, and human rights abuses and confl ict in Eritrea and sub-Saharan Africa, pushed hundreds of thousands to make dangerous sea crossings. Rebecca Ball, Creative Director of Sunderland Culture: “Whilst confronting hard truths about the realities of the refugee crisis and situations which are unimaginable to most of us ‘Journey’s Drawn’ is incredibly moving, humanising and a unique opportunity to learn more about the struggles of refugees in a sensitive manner.” A woman cradling a baby, a child’s drawing of his friends playing football surrounded by tanks, and men huddled inside refugee camps at Calais, are just of the closely observed scenes captured by artists, who ventured into war zones and camps to capture the lives of people at the very heart of the refugee crisis.

Reflecting on First There is a Mountain – a nationwide travelling participatory artwork What is First There is a Mountain?

First There is a Mountain is a set of buckets and spades in the form of world mountains: Kilimanjaro, Mount Shasta, Mount Fuji, Stromboli, and Uluru, nested together in a set. It is a participatory artwork, which has taken place across 25 beaches in the UK this summer 2019; from the north of Scotland, to the Isles of Scilly, on remote islands and city beaches, with small to large groups of participants. People of all ages have come together to build miniature mountains made of sand.
