KSUA students recognized at national IT conference

By STACY MILLBERG - Staff Writer - [email protected] Star Beacon

— ASHTABULA — A half-dozen information technology students from Kent State University-

Ashtabula received honors at the Association of Information Technology Professionals’ National

Collegiate Conference last week.

The students traveled to Memphis, Tenn., where they competed with about 700 other students from 80

different U.S. colleges and universities. They participated in seminars and a job fair, said Irene Edge,

professor. The students had multiple opportunities to listen to keynote speakers and to hear from IT

professionals, she said. The KSUA students took certification tests and walked away with awards at the

conference.

Kenny Carvalho, Amy Garbenus and Joe Keefe each received Institute for the Certification of

Computing Professionals’ entry-level certificates, which are recognized in the U.S. and Canada. Keefe

scored the highest of all the students testing for certification at the conference. For the student level,

Keefe needed a score of 50 to pass. For the professional level, he needed a score of 70. Keefe scored a

68, two points below. Only 17 certifications were awarded at the conference, three of which went to

KSUA students.

Also winning awards were Jen Bunce and Garbenus, who placed second in the Microsoft Office

Solutions competition. Also receiving honorable mentions in that competition were Kyle Schrank and

Justin Stevenson.

“Our showing speaks volumes for the education we receive here and the instructors we have teaching

us,” Keefe said.

Garbenus said the group went into the conference without a lot of time to prepare for the competition, as

it was a last-minute decision to enter.

“It was a definite learning experience,” Stevenson said. “We went in full-force so we can prepare for

next year.”

Bunce said it was fun to see how things are done in the real world.
