KSR Magnetic Float Switches

KSR Magnetic Float Switches are used to control distinct levels of aliquid. They are based on the float principle with individual contactsfor every level to be monitored.A float with a built-in magnetic system actuates a small reed contactthrough the wall of the guide tube. Thus the switching operation iswithout direct contact to the liquid, free of wear and tear, and doesnot require any power supply.KSR Magnetic Float Switches are available with multiple switchpoints.• Contact denomination always refers to rising level of the liquid:

• S - closing on rising level• O - opening on rising level• U - change-over

• By using one float up to a maximum of 2 switch points theswitching behaviour is bistable i.e. the switching state will remainthe same even when the liquid moves further up or down.

• Contacts are volt-free.

Technical advantages• The simple operating principle is suitable for a wide variety of

applications.• Suitable for virtually all liquids.• Measurement of liquid levels independent of physical or chemical

changes of the liquid, e.g. foam, conductivity, dielectric constant,S.G., pressure, vacuum, temperature, vapour, condensation, bubbles, boiling effects.

• Universal signal processingPLCInitiator circuit (NAMUR)Signal amplifiers/Protection relays2-point controls

• AS-Interface available, Ex/non-Ex.• Multiple switch points in one unit (up to 8).• High repeatability of set points.• Long service life.• Suitable for rough environments.• Interface and product level measurement possible

at ∆-S.G. ≥ 50 kg / m3.• Simple installation and commissioning, maintenance-free.• Application limits:

T = -196 °C to + 300 °CP = vacuum to 100 barS.G. ≥ 400 kg/m3

• High availability of corrosion resistant materials for applications inall industries:

Chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical industry, liquidnatural gas, off-shore, ship-building, power plants, manufacturingindustry, water treatment, food and beverages.

• Application specific designs available.• Explosion-proof designs.

• Float switches are simple devices without certification accordingEN 50020/5.4.As such, they are allowed to be used in Ex-area ‘Zone 1’, oncondition, that they work with a certified intrinsically safe circuitin protection class EEx ib or higher.

changes of the liquid, e.g. foam, conductivity, dielectric constant, S.G.,pressure, vacuum, temperature, vapour, condensation, bubbles, boiling effects.

• Signal transmission over large distances.

• Simple installation and commissioning, one-time calibration only, no re-calibrationnecessary.

• Display proportional to the height of thelevel or the contents of the vessel.

• Set point relays continuously adjustableover full range.

• High repeatability of set points.

• Interface and product level measurementpossible at ∆-S.G. ≥ 50 kg / m3.

• Application limits:T = -80 °C to +200 °CP = vakuum to 10 MPaρ = ≥ 400 kg/m3

• High availability of corrosion resistantmaterials for applications in all industries:Chemical, petrochemical, and pharma-ceutical industry, liquid natural gas, off-shore, ship-building, power plants, manufacturing industry, water treatment, food and beverages.

• Application specific designs available.

• Explosion-proof designs.

• Programmable head-mounted transmitterunits 4 ... 20 (see catalogue 1011).

KSR Level Sensors/Transmitters are used tomeasure and transmit the level of liquids inconjunction with a KSR Control Unit. It isbased on the float principle with magnetictransmission in a 3-wire potentiometer circuit.

A float with a built-in magnetic systemactuates small reed contacts through the wallof the guide tube. These reed switches form aresistance measuring chain that continuouslygenerates a voltage proportional to the heightof the level.

The resistance measuring chain is closelystepped and is made up from small chipssoldered onto a PCB. Due to this assemblythe generated voltage is virtually continuous.

Depending on requirements and designdifferent contact separations from 5 to 20 mmare available.

Signal transmission:

• External control units and set point relaysplease refer to catalogue 1011

or

• Loop-powered control units in terminal box,4 ... 20 mA output.

Technical advantages• The simple operating principle is suitable for

a wide variety of applications.

• Continuous measurement of liquid levelsindependent of physical or chemical

KSR Magnetostrictive Level Transmitters

➀➂

➀ Wire➁ Electronics housing➂ Magnetic field➃ Magnet➄ Torsional wave

KSR Magnetostrictive Level Transmitters TypeFFG-T-... are used for continuous, remote liq-uid level measurement and based on positionmonitoring of a magnetic float following themagnetostrictive principle.

The measuring process is initiated by a currentimpulse. This current generates an axial mag-netic field (3) along the length of a wire (1) madeof magnetostrictive material, which is held un-der tension inside the guide tube. The float, which sits on the liquid surface, is fitted withpermanent magnets (4). When the pulsereaches the float the two magnetic fields inter-act and a torsional force results.

A torsional stress wave (5) is induced in thewire. A piezoceramic converter in the transmit-ter housing (2) at the end of the wire convertsthis into an electrical signal. By measuring theelapsed transit time, it is possible to determinethe start point of the torsional stress wave andtherefore the float position with a high degreeof accuracy.

Technical advantages

The simple and effective principle of operationmakes these devices ideally suited for aplethora of applications.

Constant measurement of liquid levels, inde-pendent of physical and chemical changes ofthe medium, such as: foaming, conductivity, dielectric constant, pressure, vacuum, temperature, vapours, condensation, bubbles, boiling effects, S.G. changes.

Signal transmission over long distances.

Simple installation and commissioning - one-off initial calibration adjustment, no furthercalibration necessary.

Interface and total level measurement at∆-S.G. ≥ 50 kg / m3.

Application limits:T = –200 °C to +200 °CP = vacuum to 100 barρ ≥ 400 kg/m3

Availability of many corrosion resistant materialsfacilitates use in applications in all industrysectors: chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, off-shore, ship building, powerplants, manufacturing, water treatment, foodand beverages.

Application specific designs and solutionsavailable.

Explosion-proof designs.
