Remember how you felt the day you shot your best round of golf, reeled in that big fish, scored the winning TD or rolled that 230 game? What about the powerful emotions that course through your body when your child drives in the winning run? How much pride wells up when you turn to other fans and tell them that your niece, nephew or grandchild just scored their first goal?
at the age of 5, willie mays was playing catch with his father.
Those are lifetime memories, and memories are best when shared with others. That’s what Kenosha Sports Network (KSN) is all about…capturing those feelings, sparking those emotions and sharing that exhilaration with family members, friends and neighbors.
Joe montana started playing organized youth football at the age of 8.
Now, KSN is expanding its reach. On your screen is a groundbreaking publication that will forever change the face of community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play is the exclusive digital magazine for community sports in the Kenosha area.
venus and serena williams began playing tennis at the age of 5.
This free e-mag will deliver timely community sports news, important announcements, essential events, comprehensive standings, player profiles, photos and much more to your computer or mobile device every week.
wayne gretzky began skating on his backyard ice rink at the age of 3.
Producing this revolutionary publication is Kenosha-based Community Sports Desk, a sports software and service company. Like you, we understand the deep emotions associated with dramatic moments on the fields, courts and rinks, and we want to help you preserve them. CSD has one main goal in mind with this e-mag: to bring together a group of people who are passionate about playing, coaching, watching and sharing information about community sports.
danica patrick began driving go-karts competitively at the age of 10.
OK, so what’s up with the “subliminal” messages in italics? The point is that great athletes can trace their love for sports, their involvement in community sports, and their sports connections with family members to an early age.
Of course, not every kid who starts playing sports early will grow up to be a superstar. But the 40 million-plus American kids who participate in youth sports – plus the 25-year-old beach volleyball player, the 45-year-old horseshoe pitcher and the 65-year-old bocce player – all have an opportunity to create memories for themselves and their families that will last forever.
You are already excited about community sports. Kenosha Sports Network @Play gives you a new platform on which to share that enthusiasm with an entire community. We provide the vehicle…all you have to do is drive it!

Procarione family pitches in to help those in need
Busyness. It keeps us on the run every day, from errand to errand, meeting to meeting, responsibility to responsibility…and suddenly the day is gone. Most of us have just enough time to take care of our-selves and our families, and little time for the diseased, the disadvan-taged and the disabled. But when we justify our lack of volunteerism by saying that our plates are too full, we ignore the empty plates in front of the most needy.
Standing out in sharp contrast are those to whom benevolence is a way of life. They run just as many errands, attend just as many meetings and fulfill just as many
responsibilities, but still find time to comfort those carrying heavy burdens, sacrificing daily to make the world a better place.
Among those angels of mercy are the members of the Procarione family. The longtime Kenoshans and current Pleasant Prairie resi-dents, who have served as volun-teers at homeless shelters and bell ringers for the Salvation Army, have never been content with feasting on life’s luxuries while those in need around them beg for scraps. Instead, they’ve made a lifestyle out of serving others and making miracles happen for those with little hope.
diagnosed with muscular dystrophyJim and Diane Procarione have
three children, but through the years they’ve had more than 20 kids living in their home, including 19 foster children. All of them are better off today than they would have been had they not known the Procariones, and none can attest to that fact more than Cyrus.

“We got Cyrus when he was 10 days old,” said Jim, an executive chef at Abbott Laboratories. “When he began to crawl, my wife noticed that something wasn’t right. We had him tested and learned that he had Duchenne muscular dystro-phy, which is the worst form of this disease. We didn’t go into it intending to adopt him, but once we learned about his condition, we felt we needed to keep him. We of-ficially adopted Cyrus when he was 8 years old.”
Cyrus, now 16, has been in a wheelchair for the past three years. He will be a sophomore at Tremper
High School this fall. His favorite subject is science.
miracle League comes to KenoshaCyrus also enjoys baseball, and
thanks to a visionary program called the Miracle League, he and other kids from 3 to 19 years of age with physical and developmen-tal disabilities have played the sport on Wednesday nights during the past seven summers. The Kenosha Miracle League was launched in 2004 at the Kenosha YMCA.
“With the support of the John-son Family of Companies, Rotary Clubs of Kenosha, Brewer Chari-
ties and the Ford Motor Company, we were able to build Rotary Miracle Field, which is the cus-tom-designed baseball field with a cushioned synthetic turf surface that accommodates wheelchair and walking assistance devices,” said Stacy Plowman, sports director of the Kenosha YMCA.
The fenced-in field, located at the Callahan Family Branch of the YMCA, also includes an electronic scoreboard and stands for specta-tors. Adding to the atmosphere is the playing of the National Anthem prior to the game. Players wear

t-shirts with their names on the backs. The league is free to all participants.
“Each participant is partnered with a volunteer buddy who assists them with batting, fielding and base running,” Plowman continued. “This year, we had 32 players and 30 buddies. We divided the players into two teams, the Brewers and Cubs. The three special rules of the league are that every player gets a hit, every player gets on base and every player scores. Every player bats in every inning, with the last child hitting a home run to drive everybody in.”
entire family gets involvedThe whole Procarione family is
involved with the Miracle League. Jim, the Kenosha YMCA’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year, pitches to the kids or sets them up with a tee, and keeps a bucket of balls next to him, rolling one to each fielder every time a batter hits the ball. Jim and Diane’s biological daughters, Katie, 22, and Jamie, 18, serve as Cubs managers, while Jamie’s boyfriend, Tim, manages the Brewers. Diane keeps parents and other fans fo-cused on the game.
“Supporting all of the kids’ ef-forts on the field is my job as cheer-leader from the stands,” Diane said.
Having grown up with Cyrus – and having witnessed the sacrific-es their parents made for so many children – the girls understand the significance of their contributions.
“Helping the kids at Miracle
League is the best hour spent each week,” Katie said.
“Seeing all the kids’ smiles and hearing all their laughs is why volun-teering is a joy, not a job,” Jamie said.
Cyrus loves baseball and appre-ciates his family’s involvement, but really looks forward to hanging out with his Miracle League friends.
“It’s all about socializing with ev-eryone, especially the girls,” he said.
A goodwill ambassadorIn addition to the weekly games
at Rotary Miracle Field, the local Miracle League kids go on occa-sional outings. They were guests of the Kenosha Merchants at Sim-mons Field in June, going out onto the field prior to the game. Two years ago, Cyrus threw out the first
pitch at a Brewers game as the goodwill ambassador for the state of Wisconsin on behalf of the Mus-cular Dystrophy Association.
“I feel very fortunate to be healthy and I feel fortunate job-wise, to be able to support my family and others,” Jim said. “I want to give back, and the Miracle League is a great way to do it. As the number of kids in the program grows, the need for more buddies increases as well. We’re always looking for more people to help.”
Any individuals interested in volunteering their time as Miracle League buddies, or any compa-nies interested in Miracle League sponsorship opportunities, should contact Plowman at 262-654-9622.
Jamie and Cyrus Procarione display Cyrus’ “best Leader” certificate.
