China’s largest supercritical fossil
fuelled power plant, Wai Gao Qiao
is situated in the Pudong district of
Shanghai, located at the mouth of the
river Yangtze. The power sta tion’s
two blocks, each with a capacity of
900 MW, were connected to the pu-
blic grid in December 2003 and May
2004 respectively.

Right from the start, the plant’s operation has been highly successful, going off
without a hitch. As the first power plant of this size in China, it is model in terms
of effi ciency, reliability and cost effectiveness and sets a bench mark for any new
con struc tions of supercritical power sta tions in the future. Its overall system effici-
ency of more than 42 % is mar k edly higher than that of the average Chinese power
station. Our SEZ cooling water pumps – with their proven track record – ensure
smooth and efficient produc tion, as do our CHTD turbine-driven boiler feed pumps
with a discharge capacity of 1664 t/h and a pump input power of 18.4 MW.
As well as the pumps, KSB supplied all valves needed for the power sta tion’s feed
water system. The large-sized valves had to be capable of withstanding pressures of
610 bar and temperatures of up to 207 °C.
The installation and commissioning of all pumps and valves was supervised by
KSB Service. A maintenance contract taken out for all pumps and valves is renewed
annually and in cludes quarterly inspections to be performed by Service staff from
Shanghai.
