KS4 Curriculum Information

For Parents/Carers

Core Curriculum – all students will study this

• Examined subjects:

• Religious Studies

• English Literature and English Language

• Mathematics

• Combined Science (equivalent to two GCSEs)

These subjects are vital for progression

to Post-16 providers.

Core Curriculum – all students will study this

• Non-examined subjects

• CPSHE

• Computing

• PE

KS4 Curriculum

Most pupils will study:

• History or Geography;

• French or German (pupils continue with the language they currently study)

• Then make one more choice.

Some pupils will choose between:

• History or Geography;

• Then make two other choices.

English Baccalaureate (Ebacc)

• The English Baccalaureate (E-Bacc) was introduced in 2010.

• The EBacc is a combination of GCSE subjects, including a language, that offer an important range of knowledge and skills to young people.

• Choosing the EBacc at GCSE gives you access to a full range of employment options when you leave secondary school.

• It is recommended by universities.

• Languages are an important part of EBacc - valued by education and employment.

• English Baccalaureate – a measure to help keep your progression routes open.

What has been happening?

• Students have been given their KS4 Curriculum booklet online.

• They will have information available about the subjects on SMHW.

• They should also be researching information on career opportunities and progression routes.

Speak to the teachers about the topics you will cover

How can you support your child?

• Talk to your child about the subjects on offer.

• Speak to them about their decisions.

• Support them through completing all of their work at home so they can succeed in all their subjects.

What happens now?

• Make sure your child reads the booklet.

• If they have any questions about a subject then they should contact the subject teacher via SMHW.

• If you or your child has any questions about the process then please email ks4curriculum@stmcollege.org.uk.

• Your child will be sent their KS4 Curriculum form. This needs to be completed and emailed to the address above by Friday 15th May 2020.

• We understand that plans may need to be altered depending on the current nationwide situation.
