Canadian expat masters Soroban Yannic Piché, student of the Osaka Abacus Association’s free soroban classes has successfully joined a small elite group of soroban experts by passing the 1-kyu test. Yannic is the first Canadian to ever achieve the feat and told KS “As for abacus, reaching level 1 was not the ultimate goal but only a new beginning. There’s no end to the process, but I intend to climb some of the rungs on the dan ladder. Improving my mental calculation (anzan) skills is also a high priority”. This month’s cover feature is about a man who has devoted his life to collecting

whiskies. Here are five interesting facts about this classic drink.

Whiskey or whisky?Depends on where you are from. The United States and Ireland label their product whiskey with an “ey”. Canada, Scotland and Japan spell it without the “e” - whisky.

What is whiskey?Whiskey is any alcohol distilled from fermented grain mash (with exception of some made from corn which doesn’t need to be aged like most other whiskies.) All whiskey must be distilled at a minimum of 40% and a have a maximum of 94.8% alcohol by volume. The main dif-ference between whiskies is the type of grain used for the mash.

What types of whiskey are there?There’s Scotch, Rye, Irish Whiskey, Bourbon or Bourbon Whiskey, and Tennessee Whiskey. Then there are the single malt, single barrel, and blended varieties. Most whiskies on the market today are blends. A blend is mixture of two or more whiskies that are bottled and sold as one, and any product that contains a mix of barrel-aged malt and grain whiskies. It is a common misconception that “single malt” is from a sin-gle batch or barrel. A single-barrel whiskey is the product of one barrel, unmixed with any other sources of whiskey.

What’s the difference between whiskey and bourbon?To keep it simple, whiskey is the overarching term. So, whiskey includes bourbon, but bourbon does not always include whiskey. A strict set of federal trade regulations defines what can be called what. Bourbon can only be labeled bourbon if it was made in the United States. It has no minimum aging period but to call the product straight bourbon it must be aged for no less that two years and have no added coloring or flavoring. These rules do not apply to blended bourbon.

What’s the latest with Japanese whiskey? Earlier this year, Suntory announced that it was buying Beam Inc., thus acquiring the iconic American bourbon brands Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark. The purchase cost around US $16 billion, made Sun-tory the world’s third-largest spirits manufacturer, and resulted in a new company called Beam Suntory.

Cream of the CropCreamy Model Management has been in the business more than 30 years, providing kids and adult models for photo shoots, commercials and catalogues around Kansai. KS sat down with Kayoko Terauchi to find out how it all works.Text & Images: KS

What kinds of work are models and actors that Creamy casts involved in?We get requests from our clients for models to appear in all sorts of things, from mail order catalogues for chil-dren’s clothes to adult extras to appear in TV commercials. Most of the media is print-based (flyers, brochures, etc.) but we also get requests for kids’ fash-ion shows or TV commercials.

What kinds of companies and busi-nesses are clients of Creamy?Mainly apparel brands, department stores, and other clothing related clients, but sometimes car makers - virtually any product where the client is looking for a child model. Our clients are mainly based in Kansai, but some are in Tokyo, Nagoya, and even Kyushu.

Do you enjoy your work?I love this job. I will never quit. It’s tough and has its challenges, but I get the chance to meet a lot of people and it’s extremely rewarding.

What kinds of challenges does Creamy face with regard to models and clients?Well, I am on call 24 hours a day. Kids get sick, or nervous and have to with-draw from a shoot and so I have to find a replacement asap. I have to deal with

angry clients when the models under-perform and smooth things over.

How do you choose which models to forward to a client?We don’t choose the kids at all, the cli-ent does. Each model has a composite card (with a selection of photos and their dimensions) and based on the criteria the client is searching for - a certain height or age etc., I’ll send them every card we have on our books that matches.

What would an average day on a Creamy assignment be like?Assignments can vary from four to five hours for most shoots but can sometimes extend up to eight hours in any one day. I don’t go on the shoots, myself, but there is often a lot of wait-ing around especially if the shoot is on location. Mostly they are held in photo studios. Long shoots can be trouble-some for young kids, so usually one parent is encouraged to attend.

What kinds of kids does Creamy look to recruit?We welcome applications from children of any age and nationality. Creamy recruits babies to high school age kids, and our sister company Advance handles models in their teens and older. For kids, it is all about looks, but for adult models anything goes,

since the client often needs a wide range of models for its shoots - often as background extras or to play Santa Claus, or to be a grandmother, etc.

If foreigners living in Kansai decided they wanted to get their kids involved in modelling, or even model them-selves, what would they have to do to start working for Creamy?Send me pictures by email! We need clear photos, that show the face as well as full body. We will email back and if you or your child passes the first screening, you will be invited to the of-fice for an interview. We’ll explain dur-ing the interview about how everything works in detail. There is no registration fee to be accepted onto our books, but you must sign a contract with us.

Rogin’s Ode to Whiskey

Poetry for the palate: A Moriguchi man’s love of whiskey has taken him across the world and back, and now he’s Kansai’s go-to man for a true taste of the past.

One look inside this place and you know there’s a special sto-ry hidden behind the crystal ware and decades-old merchan-dise and memorabilia. Hundreds of bottles of whiskey line giant old-fashioned wooden shelves that stretch the length of the bar, harking back to a time long past. There are whiskies and bourbons new and old. Familiar faces like Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, and Four Roses alongside bottles that are over 100 years old with faded labels of brands that, to many, are now unheard of. Music floats gently from the far corner where there sits a jukebox that looks like it belongs in an antique shop or a museum. The soothing sounds of Nat King Cole draw guests into this whiskey lovers’ dreamland, accompa-nied by a ching! - the sound of the evening’s sales chiming from an equally rustic-looking cash register. Patrons trickle in, preparing to be carried away to another time and place by Rogin’s Tavern, whiskey and bourbon bar extraordinaire.

“Did you know Nat King Cole used to sing in Japanese?” says bar owner Seiichiro Tatsumi as he sniffs a more than 100-year-old whiskey before taking a few sips, eyes distant, savoring each drop. His expression suggesting he is some-where else, even if just for that moment. A dapper-looking gentlemen in a button-down vest, dressed exactly as you would expect someone behind the bar of such a novel place to be. Seiichiro is not your average whiskey lover and Rogin’s is not your average whiskey bar. First opened in August 1977 and quietly nestled away in Moriguchi city, about 25 minutes by train from Osaka, Rogin’s Tavern is an experience in and of itself. The three-story building has been in Seiichiro’s fam-ily his whole life and for several generations before him. To say he has a long-standing connection with the place would be an understatement; Seiichiro himself was born right under its very roof. As far back as he can trace, his family has been connected to the property and the area, back to the time when Moriguchi was an important hub for travelers, and a part of Osaka Kaidō (or 57th of the 57 stations of the Tōkaidō, which was a route that ran along the Yodo river and connected Edo, present-day Tokyo, to Kyoto).

店の中を一瞥するだけで、秘められた物語の声が聞こえるだろう。グラスの輝き。使い込まれた古道具。懐かしい記念品。昔風の巨大な木棚は、バーの奥行きほどの横幅がある。並べられた何百本ものウイスキーボトルが、過去への想いをかきたてる。おなじみのジャックダニエル、ジムビーム、フォアローゼズなどはもちろん、今ではほとんど名前を知る人もいない色褪せた100年以上前のボトルもある。店の奥では、骨董屋か博物館にありそうなジュークボックスが、穏やかに音楽を奏でている。ナット・キング・コールの心地よい調べ。古びたレジの「チン」という音。この店のすべてが、訪れる者を夢見心地に誘う。常連客が一人、また一人とやってきた。ここ「呂仁」で、類まれなウイスキーやバーボンを味わい、ひとときの心の旅を楽しむために。

「ナット・キング・コールが、日本語で歌ったレコードをご存じですか」と、店主の巽誠一郎が問いかける。100年以上前のウイスキーの香りを確かめ、口に含み、遠い目で味わっている。ほんの一瞬、彼の思考がはるか彼方を彷徨っているように見えた。バーの雰囲気に相応しい、ベストを粋に着こなした紳士。そのウイスキーへの愛も、この呂仁というバーも非凡の一言だ。大阪駅から約25分。静かな守口市で、1977年8月より店を営んでいる。呂仁は、その存在自体が特別な体験である。3階建ての店舗ビルは巽家の資産で、この土地は先祖代々受け継がれてきたもの。巽誠一郎は、まさにこの屋根の下で生まれた。巽家の歴史は、少なくとも守口が大阪街道の宿場町であった江戸時代にまで遡る。守口宿は、淀川沿いに大阪と京都を結ぶ大阪街道（東海道57次では江戸から数えて最終の57番目）の宿場だった。守口に生まれた一人の男が、どのようないきさつで西洋の酒を愛し、その伝導者となったのだろう。巽はウイスキーとの出会いを憶えている


How did one man from Moriguchi come to be such a lover and purveyor of what once was traditionally a Western spirit? Seiichiro recalled his first experience with what was to become his passion, but said it wasn’t exactly love at first sip. The basement of the Rihga Royal Hotel in Osaka was where, as a young lad, he first tried the liquor. “It burned and was difficult to drink at first” he remembered with a chuckle. But something was ignited in him that night that would ultimately lead him to countless trips across the back roads of the United States of America. He would scour the shelves and back rooms of liquor shops from Kentucky and Tennessee all the way to Chicago and New York on a quest for vintage bottles of whiskey and bourbon to ship back to Japan. His Holy Grail has been the “Bottled-in-Bond” or “bonded” whiskies. Easily identified by a green tax strip on the bottles, these are whiskies that were produced according to the stipulations of the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

The Bottled-in-Bond Act guaranteed the liquid inside was actually whiskey, which was an issue of the time. In the name of greed, some less-than-reputable distillers would use iodine and tobacco to color their product in order to save on work and cost. This problem was solved with bonded whiskey - this meant it was stored in a federally bonded warehouse

が、最初の一口で好きになったわけではないという。若い巽が初めてウイスキーを飲んだのは、大阪のリーガロイヤルホテルの地下だった。「焼けるような感じで、飲みにくかった」と彼は笑いながら回想する。だがその夜を境に、何かが心に火を点けた。やがて導かれるように、何度もアメリカに足を運ぶことになったのである。ケンタッキーやテネシーで酒屋の棚をくまなく探し、日本に送るヴィンテージボトルを求めて遠くシカゴやニューヨークまで足を伸ばした。お目当ての品は「ボトルド・イン・ボンド」や「ボンデッド」と呼ばれるウイスキー。1897年発令の「ボトルド・イン・ボンド法」に則って製造されたストレートウイスキーで、課税済であることを証明する緑色のシールが目印だ。ボトルド・イン・ボンド法は、ボトル内の液体が間違いなくウイスキーであることを保証するための法令だった。当時は、ヨウ素やタバコなどで色付けをした粗悪なウイスキーを出荷して、労力と時間を節約しようと目論む蒸留所が少なくなかったのである。「ボンデッド・ウイスキー」は、米国政府の監督のもと、連邦政府の保税倉庫で樽のまま保存される。出荷のために瓶詰めされて初めて酒税がかかる仕組みだ。この優遇税制措置を受けるには、いくつかの条件が課せられる。ストレートウイスキーであること。単一の蒸溜所がその年に蒸留した原酒だけを瓶詰めすること。100プルーフ（アルコール度数50%）であること（現代は80〜90プルーフが主流）。さらに保税倉庫では、瓶詰めの前に最低4年間貯蔵しなければならない。1984年頃まで、連邦政府は独自の課税済みシールを全ボトルに添付していた。目の前の商品が本物のウイスキーであると確信するため、人々は政府の権威をあてにしたのである。その結果、ボトルド・イン・ボンド・ウイスキーは20世紀初頭より人気を集め、現在でもコレクター垂涎の品となっている。巽は年2回のアメリカ出張で、このボトルド・イン・ボンド・ウイスキーを探しまわる。ケンタッキー州レキシントンに所有する拠点から、憧れの銘酒との出会いを夢見て、裏道や脇道に車を駆って地方の酒屋を訪ねる。日中は目立たない酒屋のネオンを見落とさないよう、飛んで火にいる夏の虫のごとく夕方から行動する。巽の米国好きとウイスキーに懸ける情熱は当地でも有名だ。ケンタッキー州からは名誉市民と認められ、功績のあった民間人に送る「カーネル」の称号が授与されている。

「今では、もう昔のような製法でウイスキーを造らなくなりました」と、巽は言う。事実、ボトルの中には、タイムカプセルが眠っている。スムーズな舌触りも、独特な味わいも、現代の多くのウイスキーやバーボンには見られない特徴だ。ワインとは異なり、ウイスキーは時を経てもボトルの中で変質しにくい。だからこそ100年前の人たちと共に、歴史のかけらを味わうことができる。終わりのない旅は、守口のウイスキー愛好家に


極上の贈り物をもたらした。滑らかなジャズの調べは、センチメンタルなバーの装飾やヴィンテージスピリッツの香りと相まって、ここではないどこかへと客を連れていく。「口に含んで、空想してください」と、巽は静かに微笑む。そう、これは夢を見るためのお酒なのだ。

under U.S. government supervision, where taxes didn’t have to be paid on the whiskey until it was bottled and taken out of the warehouse for sale or shipping to the retailer. The whiskey had to meet certain requirements to qualify for this tax break; it had to be straight whiskey, distilled in a single season by one distillery, and bottled at 100 proof (100 proof whiskey contains 50% alcohol by volume. Nowadays, most whiskies are bottled at between 80 and 90 proof but this can vary). It also had to be stored in the bonded warehouse for at least four years before bottling. The federal government put its own green tax strip on every bottle until around 1984. People looked to the government as the authority to guaran-tee the product they were buying was actually whiskey, and as a result, Bottled-in-Bond whiskey became highly sought after in the early 20th century, and still is by collectors like Seiichiro today.

It is the whiskies with the Bottled-in-Bond seal in particular that he seeks out on his twice-yearly trips to the States. Using his property in Lexington, Kentucky as a base, Seiichiro drives the back roads and byways searching for out-of-the-way liquor stores with the hope of uncovering more of this coveted liquid gold. He sets out after dark so, like a moth to a flame, he can spot on the horizon the bright neon lights of a bottle shop that might have remained hidden during the day. Seiichiro is so well-known for his love of the U.S. and passion for whiskey, that he is recognized as an honorary Kentucky citizen and has been made a Kentucky colonel.

“They don’t make them like they use to” Seiichiro says with a smile, and it’s true. Time capsules in a bottle, they each bring back a taste and a smoothness many modern whiskies and bourbons don’t hold. Unlike wine, whiskey is not expected to change much over time in the bottle. Seiichiro believes each sip is a chance to sample a piece of history, in effect the same beverage drinkers were partaking of a hundred years ago.

Because of Seiichiro’s journey, Rogin’s Tavern in Moriguchi has everything a whiskey lover could wish for. The smooth jazz sounds blend effortlessly with the sentimental bar decor and the scent of vintage spirits, transporting visitors to another time and place. “Sip and dream” Seiichiro says with a nostalgic smile, “sip and dream”.

Keep on the grassDon’t let the humid Kansai heat stop you getting outdoors this summer. What you need is some fresh air, shade, and a stretch of open lake to wet your feet in.Text & Images: Steven Hunter

Many a Kansai public park is more desert than oasis. Not so Yamadaike Park. Here the grass has been allowed to grow a little, and the paths have had leeway to take some unexpected turns. This is a park that packs a lot of countryside into a relatively modest amount of space.

Yet some visitors prefer not to stray far from the free barbecue area near the southern entrance. They simply turn up with their equipment, pick out a spot, and settle in for a fun-filled day of burger incineration.

More adventurous visitors will be rewarded as they venture further into the park’s interior. The tiniest explor-ers can enjoy navigating the mighty Amazonian bends of the 10cm deep, brick-lined, paddling stream, while slightly older siblings may prefer tracking down the park’s various well-equipped playgrounds.

Then there are parents who wade with their children through the shal-lows of the park’s natural streams, peeking under water plants and turn-ing over stones in the hunt for crayfish, or dragonfly larvae, or tadpoles. Great bonding moments are forged through

peering together in wonder at some-thing icky wriggling in a jam jar.

The park can also be enjoyed at a more sedate pace. No matter the time of year, there is always something beautiful to look at, be it cherry blos-som, maple leaves, or a hillside covered in lavender. The park’s brilliant, varied blooms attract a delightful array of both insect pollinators and senior citi-zens with cameras. Check the website for the latest blooming news.

The centerpiece of Yamadaike Park is its sizable lake. True, you can never quite forget the surrounding city, for wherever you look, electrical transmis-sion towers can be seen behind the trees, standing around the perimeter of the park. On the other hand, unlike so many others, this lake is not ringed by a metal fence. Indeed, there are exten-sive stretches of shore where you can walk right up to, even into, the water. It’s hard to overstate the difference this makes. The lake looks like… well, like a lake. It feels like a place that has at least some passing acquaintance with the natural world.

The park still manages to create enough quiet corners to accommodate abundant wildlife. Often it achieves

this not with warning signs, but through the more subtle approach of keeping visitors away from some areas by allowing them into others.

There are sections of stream with shallow waters and accessible banks, and then places where the waters are deeper and the reeds have been left to grow high. There are wooden platforms that allow visitors to get right down close to the pond life, but also keep fragile plants safe from trampling feet.

Lucky visitors may be accompanied by a late-afternoon breeze, a moment’s relief from the summer humidity.

Horsing around Mongolia

The Altai Mountains in far-west Mongolia is a far-flung location in an already faraway place. Mongolia is a backwater by most of the world’s standards, and the Altai Mountains is a backwater to most Mongolians.

We our international group of ten riders, along with a local Kazakh fam-ily whose members were employed as our wranglers, a cook, and a translator found ourselves in the even further-flung Yolt Canyon, part of the Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a region where permanent habitation is prohib-ited, even for nomadic herders.

The restricted access is due to its proximity to the Chinese border, which is apparently “just over there”, and getting to the Yolt is no easy task as most of the park is accessible only by horse or on foot.

We took a three-hour flight from Mongolia’s capital Ulaan Baatar, to the town of Bayan Olgii, famous for its exports of cashmere and camel wool. Then travelled another four hours along dirt tracks in a Furgon (Russia’s Kombi, or mini van equivalent) to the village of Altai, which touts dust and dried yak dung as its main products.

From here it was horses all the way, Kazakh horses rented from local fami-lies who call Altai home.

Once riders had been matched with horses it was time to set off, with Amangul–the robust cook and camp mother, Onorbek and Mizenkhan–the indefatigable wranglers, and their chil-dren who were tagging along for the ride. To shouts of Murrin dor! (“Let’s ride!), we were off across the steppes and into the mountains.

At brisk trots and easy canters we made our way together through the Altai Range. With fellow riders from miscellaneous European, North

American, and Pacific backgrounds, there was plenty to chat about as we rode, a diverse rolling conversation on the hoof as riders drifted from one mounted cluster to the next. We all shared two things in common; a love of horses and a taste for adventure.

We found another taste to acquire on the first day while stopping for afternoon tea with a Kazakh family of nomads. Inside their ger, the round domed tent of Central Asian herders, we were served arral, rock hard lumps of dried curd and bowls of milky tea made with salt. It was declared that

By evening we were camped on the shores of a long lake, snow capped peaks rising on both sides of the nar-row valley that cradled it. Dinner was cooked on a yak dung fire while sore behinds were rested. Soft Kazakh folk songs were played on a two-stringed dombra as the night around the campfire progressed with a bottle of local hooch and choruses of ‘ooohs’ and ‘aaahs’ triggered by flashes of shooting stars.

Morning began with a hearty por-ridge and we were promptly back in the saddle. Each day the riders consulted with the wranglers to plan the day’s route. By its nature the trek was ‘explor-atory’ with no fixed path and no objec-tives to meet. Where we went, what we did, and where we spent the night we negotiated together as we went.

We entered the Yolt Canyon region as rain clouds gathered overhead and thunder murmured across the wooded valleys. In Kazakh yolt means “vulture”, and with a name like that we wondered if it wasn’t some sort of warning about whose dinner we could end up as!

We climbed to almost 3,000 metres, above the tree line with views across tor-topped ridges. Cresting one ridge, we surprised a small group of elk which loped off out of view, but not before

stopping for a good, long look at us. Later we came across two wriggling snakes in the grass, but our most exciting find was a large lump of bear poo, identifiable by its content of berry skins. “Onoordor!” (“Today!”) shouted Onorbek the wrangler excitedly after examining the doo-ing, concluding it was fresh.

The following day was a highlight of sorts as the riders’ challenge was to attempt a mountain crossing through what had been nick-named “The Pass of Certain Death”!

The lead in to the pass crossed high alpine meadows covered in wild flowers, and the gentle ride had us wondering how the pass had earned its foreboding name. The views from the top were breathtaking. Far below on the valley floor, tiny lakes shimmered in the afternoon sun while around us barren Altai peaks, iced with snow, stretched away into China. Then came the realisation–“How on earth do we get down?” This was no pony ride!

The other side was a near-vertical slide over loose shingle, snow, and rock. A knee-wrecking scramble to the valley floor, daunting riders who descended in trepidation, but taken in stride by the mountain-wise horses. After safely making it to the bottom the group then re-nick-named the pass “The Pass of Possible Death”!

After two weeks on the trail it was a sad goodbye to the horses and the Kazakh family who had escorted us through the mountains, over peaks and across valleys. Some of the group stayed on in the village of Altai to help set up a community garden project to benefit local children by providing sustainable crops of vegetables. The rest flew back to the capital, most dozing on the flight and dreaming of hot showers, clean clothes, and cold Chinggis Khan Beer.

Bar ChatterThe world of whiskey and bourbon can be a little tricky at times and we can’t all be connoisseurs like Seiichiro Tatsumi, owner of Rogin’s Tavern in Moriguchi (see feature on page 08). But we can at least learn some Japanese bar speak so we can ask the right questions to those who are a little more in-the-know. First thing’s first when ordering whiskey, the bar staff will need to know if you like it neat sutoreto de, or on the rocks rokku de.

If you’re not a whiskey fan then ask for whatever else takes your fancy, be it red wine aka wain, white wine shiro wain, plum wine umeshu, or a simple draft beer nama biru.

If the person serving has you onto a good thing and you’re finding something a little too nomiyasui (easy to drink), you may need to remember some emergency phrases to help you in a drunken tight spot. You may also feel the need to return for a little hair of the dog that bit you mukaezake to help ease your way through that next-day hangover. Whatever the case may be, we have you covered with the phrases below for your next round of drinks. Kampai!

Authentic ItalianFor a spot of bona fide Italian pizza, pasta, salad, lasagne, or perfectly aldente pasta, Cucina Gakki is a top choice for this part of town. Perched just outside the Tenjinbashisuji sho-tengai (the longest shopping arcade in Japan, approx. 2.6km north to south) this quaint little place is a definite don’t-miss especially if you happen to be in the area around lunch time. For only ¥690 you can receive a salad and pasta set and choose from a range of divinely flavoursome options such as a hearty Bolognese, creamy carbonara, and for vegetarians; mushroom sauce or basil and mozzarella. Fish lovers will fancy the ragu tomato fish sauce, the creamy rose ko ebi shrimp sauce, and of course the spagetti and umi no sachi to yama no sachi (bounties of the sea and the mountains). The ever-gracious and friendly chef and waitress duo will have you swooning over your plate in minutes.

Irresistible IndianRecently re-opened post renovations, Laxmi is back better than ever with Indian delights guaranteed to hit the spot. Lunchtime chicken, keema, or vegetable curry sets that include rice, naan, a side salad, and a drink are a bargain deal at just ¥750, or for a little extra, ¥950 will get you two types of curry plus a little chicken tikka and shish kebab on the side. If you’re around at dinner time, seriously consider the coriander chicken curry set for ¥1500 (it’s the chef ’s recom-mendation), but if you’re not a cilantro fan then you’ll be equally satisfied with one of the four dinner set options for between ¥1100 and ¥2000, or your choice from the curry menu for ¥1000. There are a range of spice levels to suit your taste buds but a complementary post-meal lassi or house made chai tea is a definite must. Aside from the deli-ciously satisfying cuisine, the friendly service alone will have you vowing to go back.

Fabulous French Get excited for unique, homemade style dishes at Bistro Couleur where staff will welcome you with warm smiles, sit you around a big, long wooden table with kotatsu-style seat-ing, and offer to match your choice dish of the day with a choice wine from their collection. There’s a lunch deal to be snapped up at ¥900 for a starter, salad, a main, plus a drink, and a petit dessert is just an extra ¥200. The system is to choose either a pasta, a risotto, a fish dish, or a meat dish, and you can choose rice or bread to have with the meat or fish. Starter options include soup, quiche, terrine, salad and several other vegetarian alterna-tives. Dessert temptations include cheesecake, a cheese platter, or you can finish off with a simple café latte. Edge of TomorrowDoug Liman, Sci-fi, 113 mins, (Roadshow) July 4

Groundhog Day with big guns, aliens and mech-suits may sound like an odd mix, but Edge of Tomorrow is a tight, well-paced and enjoyable action movie. If you can suspend your disbelief in regards to some glaring plot holes, then this could be one of the better blockbusters this year.

Cage (Tom Cruise) is a desk-bound pencil pusher who is forced into action in a desperate struggle against an invading race. Not surprisingly, the untrained and unprepared clerk is wiped out in less than 5 minutes, only to discover he has unwittingly stumbled upon some strange technology that allows him to relive the past 24 hours…which also means he has to die all over again.

Rita (Emily Blunt) accompanies Cage on his crusade of repetition, and rather predictively, a romance sparks up between the two, leading to the biggest flaw in the movie. Cage has had an eternity to grow feelings for Rita, whereas she has only known this strange man for a few hours, which can be a rather large and annoying splinter in the narrative as a whole. The movie tries to hurdle over this by showing the clairvoyant-like powers Cage has perfected from learning the nuances of his never-ending day, but doesn’t really manage to sell it.

This is easily ignored, however, as one can’t help but to focus on the growing perfection of Cage’s attacks. Seeing him obliterated in a variety of gruesome ways is also an awesome spectacle. It is almost a shame when they have to move away from this cycle to reach the climax of the movie, which is by no means lackluster, but whimpers in comparison to the war scenes that proceed it.

Ohatsu Tenjin Summer Festival

お初天神夏祭りFREE Tsuyu No Tenjinsha Shrine, Osaka

A captivating yakutaiko float and parade will bring colour and music to the heart of Umeda on these days. Escaping the shrine and invad-ing the underground shopping complex in a riot of colour and music, there will be a lively lion dance, a powerful six-man drumming dis-play and a sweet parasol dance by ladies and kids. The festival will climax around 10pm on July 20th. If you follow the parade back to the shrine, omikuji fortunes written in English and Japanese are available to purchase there.

Wakayama Port Fireworks Display

第62回港まつり花火大会FREE Wakayama-Ko Port, Wakayama

With over 3,000 fireworks, this is the largest fireworks display in Wakayama and it’s also one of the most impressive displays in Japan. You can enjoy the spectacular flowers of light in two ways, as they are beautifully reflected on the midnight blue surface of the sea at night. Because this is an off-shore fireworks exhibition, nothing blocks spec-tators’ views so it can be enjoyed from many spots. One special effect called “chrysanthemum garden” is a must-see: 500 explosions will be quickly fired off one after another in an impressive finale.

Traditional Storytelling Art of “Rokyoku”

世界に飛翔く浪曲師　春野恵子in 道頓堀FREE Dotonbori ZAZA HOUSE, Osaka

Expect to be blown away by this powerful form of Japanese entertain-ment. Rokyoku is a traditional storytelling art, where a solo performer sings and chants a Japanese legend, and plays accompanying music on a samisen. Cheerful performer Keiko Haruno is a recipient of the Sakuya Konohana Award, given annually to those who make an out-standing contribution to Osaka’s culture though art. This rokyoku diva will perform an English rokyoku, plus a Japanese program “Masuya Osen” with English, Chinese and Korean subtitles. There will also be a lecture on rokyoku that promises to be informative and enjoyable for all.

Nachi Fire Festival

那智の火祭りFREE Kumano Nachi-Taisha Shrine, Wakayama

One of the greatest religious fire-themed events in Japan, the Nachi Fire Festival, takes place in a beautiful natural site that has spiritual power. Celebrating the anniversary of the change of residence held in the 4th century, the deities of Nachi-taisha make a pilgrimage to the place of the original shine at Nachi Falls. Following elaborate ceremonies, 12 red totems representing gods will be carried to the waterfall. A team of pilgrims carrying large torches will join the totems on the mountainside. Watch the pilgrims go up the steep stone steps, swinging the flaming torches daringly.

18,000 Original Manga Drawings by Tsuchida SeikiFREE Kyoto International Manga Museum

Tsuchida Seiki, author of critically acclaimed works like Onajitsuki wo miteiru/Under the Same Moon that made a live-action debut, left an unforgettable imprint on manga with his unique drawing style and stories with timeless themes and dialogues. All 18,000 original manga drawings (each and every piece remaining) by the creator of Orebushi, Henshuo, and Onajitsuki wo miteiru will be on display, including one section that represents his most popular era with manga manuscripts covering the walls and the floors. In addition to the artists’ massive display of original works, the event features an exhibit of exclusively drawn pieces by tribute artists, a forum about the artist by manga creators Matsumoto Taiyo, Arai Hideki, and Sugimura Shinichi, and a symposium discussing the recent question of the archival and utilisa-tion of original manga drawings.

Balthus: A RetrospectiveKyoto Municipal Museum of Art

For the first time since his death at age 92 and last exhibi-tion in Japan in 1993, the works of Balthus, a French painter regarded as the “last maestro of the 20th century,” equal to Picasso, will be exhibited in Kyoto this July to September after a two-month display in Tokyo. The exhibition will fea-ture works rarely seen in Japan and various oil paintings and selections from the artist’s private belongings, taken from collections around the world and finally brought together for this temporary event. As an exceptionally private person throughout his career, he avoided any biographical repre-sentations of himself, and asked viewers not to ask about his identity but rather to look at his pictures. This opportunity to view and judge this remarkable artist’s works in person may be the last in Japan for many years.

Art Osaka 2014Hotel Granvia Osaka

A two-day event in the heart of Osaka, this contemporary art fair featuring works from a staggering 53 galleries is an event you don’t want to miss. The event, held across dozens of hotel rooms in the Hotel Granvia Osaka, brings together a plethora of painting, sculpture, print, photograph, video, contemporary craft, and other works by both emerging and international artists. For those unfamiliar with the Osaka arts scene, this is a great place to get your feet wet as galleries from across Japan and especially the Kansai area will be con-tributing a selection of their collections to the event. Along with the galleries, there are three special international exhibi-tions on view in collaboration with international partners (L’institut français du Japon-Kansai, Goethe-Institut, Art Ka-ohsiung Taiwan) and one showcasing young artists selected from the University Annual Exhibition this past February.

Hunter Easton Hayes released his debut self-titled album in 2011, reaching number seven on the US Billboard Charts and selling over a million copies. The young Cajun country singer-songwriter is an over-achiever to say the least. He can play thirty instruments, appeared regularly on kids TV from a young age, and at seven years old he performed for the then-President Bill Clinton at the White House.

After wowing audiences on the TV show America’s Most Talented Kid in 2004, he signed up to a major label, Universal Music Publishing Group, in 2008.

Hayes released his second album Storyline two months ago and it has already charted in Japan. Of the album he says: “I’m just ready to say something new. I’ve lived with the first record for so long and I feel like I’ve written the next chapter and am ready to share it with the world. I’m ready to open up and tell my story.”

Norman Watt-RoyBorn in Bombay, India in 1951, then raised in London, England, Norman Watt-Roy became a member of Ian Dury and the Blockheads in the late seventies. His time as a Blockhead in-cluded their most successful single, ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’.

When Dury’s guitarist Chas Jankel left, Watt-Roy hit it off with replace-ment Wilko Johnson, a rapport that would lead to Watt-Roy joining John-son’s own band in 1985.

During the eighties, the bassist-vo-calist was prolific with his session work appearing on recordings for The Clash, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Nick Lowe and Roger Daltrey to name a few.

Last year saw the release of Watt-Roy’s first solo CD Faith & Grace, and when asked to describe the album he answered: “It’s kind of across the board of everything I’ve done.”

Ed Sheeran Ed Sheeran’s debut album + released in 2011 was the culmination of six years’ hard work since his first independent EP in 2005. By 2008 he was playing small venues in London, and in 2009 alone he played 312 gigs (having read that James Morrison had done 200 in a year he wanted to surpass that feat.)

In 2010 Sheeran booked a flight to Los Angeles and found himself playing open mic gigs all over the city. It would seem that this young singer-songwrit-er’s path has been laid out for him and that it’s been an easy road to follow, but if you don’t have the genuine musi-cal talent to back it up then that road can very quickly fall apart. Sheeran’s acoustic folk-pop style has won a lot of acclaim and awards, and last month saw the release of his second album, called simply X.

The BirthdayFrom 1991 until 2003, vocalist for The Birthday, Yusuke Chiba, fronted the Japanese punk-blues four-piece Thee Michelle Gun Elephant. Between 2001 and 2006 he put together a side project, called Rosso.

The Birthday came together after Rosso announced a long-term hiatus in 2006, and the group has since released eight albums in eight years including Come Together in May of this year. Alongside Yusuke Chiba are Kenji Fujii (guitar), Haruki Hirai (bass), and fellow ex-Thee Michelle Gun Elephant Kazuyuki Kuhara (drums).

Known for straightforward garage-punk-blues-rock, the style of music that Chiba pushes has changed very little in the last twenty years. These guys rocked back in the ‘90s and still do now!

Ally MobbsBritish musician and artist Ally Mobbs is playing a number of gigs in the Kansai area this month. KS grabbed him for pre-show chat.How would you describe your music?Instrumental atmospheric beat music with a penchant for organic sounds and sometimes melancholic melodies. It’s the kind of music where you have a beer in one hand a cigarette in the other and your head just nods. I also make music as part of Beat Picnic, a collective making music from the sounds around us. All sounds are manipulated from field recordings, no external samples or instruments. It’s been a really inspiring challenge and is something I’m looking forward to working on more in the future.

Would you say your typical audience are a mixed bag or are they looking for a specific genre or style?Anyone who likes head-nodding beats, flashing lights and appreciates seeing live electronic music being performed.

You’re also an artist and designer, can you tell us a little about that?I recently came back from an exhibition and art festival called Sight and Sound in Montreal performing music made from turntables without any records on. My art is about appropriating and modifying existing media to create, be it statistical data transformed into a composition or obsolete audio equipment/toy mash-ups brought back as mutant music-making machines. I have taken apart and broken many things in the process.
