Context

The proposed site for this villa/house project is located on the edge of the Whittier Peninsula, just south of the cinty center of Columbus, as well as west of the popular Brewery District. Through a simple set of transforamtional diagrams, the idea of the river acting upon the house came about. First, the river acts on the cube, a simple shape that acts as a datum upon which the change can be read. This in turn changes the shape if the cube, but initiates an opening of the cube, which then allows a bend of light to come in. Next, the river floods in, weaving its way through the plan. This line is solidified, extruded, and then cut. This allowed the idea of “space-within-space” to exist, as the walls curve just enough to create an intimate amidst the vacuus cubic space. Finally, shear is activated again with walls being trimmed and hung, creating “floating” walls that also hold up the floor plates. Finally, the floor plates are shifted up and down to create differences in cieling height, creating compressive and expansive experiences.

Dance and Performing Arts Center200’ x 200’ Theoritical Site 2015

Instructor: Lindsey McGlaughlinTime: 4 weeks Spring 2015

The Dance and Performing Arts Center (DPAC) is a theoretical project that attempts to design a building that deals with the movement of people through a structure that causes people to move in unexpected and foreign ways. The program called for spaces that dealt wth the idea of experimental performance art and dance, and attempted to translate those undulating, contorted gestures of the dancers into the form of the project. The buildings relationship with the ground (or lack thereof) was also dealt with, creating forms that merely tiptoe on the ground plane.

Context

Because of the complete lack of context and an intentional lack of site, the design of the building began as an experimentation in the editing of forms, which could then be clustered together and begin to create spaces between objects. The choices made here were an attempt to ignore the notion of a ground plane, and begin to make shapes that relect the undulating and contorted nature of the experimental dancers that would use the space.

Ohio State Fair Competition, Columbus, OH

Instructor: Lindsey McGlaughlinTime: 3 weeks, Spring 2015

The Ohio State Fair commisioned several architectural installations to be built for the 2015 summer fair season. However, the design was to specifically be for a “high density rabbit hutch” due to the adjacency of the rabbit exhibition a the summer fair. The project was also an oppurtunity for the Knowlton School of Architecture to advertise what architecture students produce, and to show the Columbus what architects learn in architecture school. Therefore, the project attempts to cite two different architectural approaches, one were space is overlapped, and another where objects populate a space. The indended result is a design that juxtaposes the two together , and begins to start a conversation between the two.

The competition site was to be located on the Ohio State fairgrounds, on the Northeast side of the city, The commitee in charge of the compititon propossed a plot that wrapped around the Art Pavilion, adjacent to the Rabbit Competiton Pavilion, and spurred the notion of a “rabbit hutch” Our take on the project was to load the design with refrences to architectural history and theory, one that informs the viewers how, for example, architects generate form, how architects develop ideas, and how architects develop their projects. Also, it was an oppurtnity to figure out how architecture can influence the design of a relatively mundance object. The requirements for the project were to build the structure out of cardboard, and to be 8’ tall, and 8’ wide, yet coated in such a way as to make it a “prototype”

As a final prototype, a 1/4” model was constructed out of similar material to cardboard, and was part of the final proposal for the project. The model was large enough that a small animal could live inside and was a great test to figure out how the structure would function when introduced to live loads.

New Wexner Center Art GalleryBroad Street, Columbus, OH 2015

Instructor: Troy Malmstrom Critics: Jackie Gargus, Doug GraffTime: 8 weeks

Due to the success of Wexner Center for the Arts Transfigurations exhibition, it was proposed that the Wexner family collection, which currently includes several early Picassos and Dubuffet paintings, scultpures by Alberto Giacometi, as well as several contemporary works by artists such as Susan Rothenberg, would be moved permanently to a downtown location, and housed in a new museum that was meant to kickstart a new arts district on the east side of Columbus, Ohio, much in the way that that Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati changed the face of the nearby neighboorhood. The building would also house several artists studios, as well as an auditorium for lectures, a children’s workshop/museum and cafe hall that could be accessed by the general public. To approach the design, the notion of “assemblage” was addressed, which reflected the Cubist nature of the art inside.

Barack Obama Presidential Library

and Confrence CenterWolf Point, Chicago, IL 2015

Instructor: Jackie Gargus Critics: Troy Malmstrom, Doug GrafTime: 6 weeks, Fall 2015

The Barack Obama Presidential Library and Confrence Center is proposed structure honoring the life and presidency of Barack Obama, to be built after he has completed his final term in office. The proposed site is located in Chicago, IL, a city which Obama says “...all the strands of my life came together...” The site, a noted promintory that juts out into the Chicago River, was chosen due to its important location in the downtown area, as well as the commanding views of Lake Michigan, and the rest of downtown Chicago. The building was designed with the idea of a structure with significant civic value, and one that would serve the city of Chicago as an important convention center for city meetings, political summits and international visits.

Wolf Point allows quite breathtaking views down the Chicago River, as well as highlights the south bend of the river quite nicely. Therefore, the proposed design takes two elements of the program, the library archive spaces and the confrence center, and pushes them towards both the city and the river, locking one visually into the city, and the other visually into the river. However, the site, located admist massive skyscrapers, and located next to the historically large Merchandise Mart, needed to be raised up. The Russian constructvist idea lent inspiration to the project, and developed into the idea of a horizontal skyscraper. This borrowing of constructivism also stylistically differentiates the structure from the incredibly clean, modernist architecture around it, much like how Barack Obama is at one time part of Chicago, and also not.
