What are Career Pathways?

Wisconsin State Approved Regional Career Pathways: The Regional Map
Outlines the academic and career plans that students can follow to pursue in-demand careers of interest, available in their region, as part of their secondary ACP and postsecondary plan.
These are developed by Regional Councils of stakeholders
Pathways Wisconsin- Why Now?
1- Increase the number of students that complete career pathways tied to high-wage, high demand jobs;
2- Transform the way we design and deliver the pathway programs for our students to ensure they are ready for life after high school
Goals:
Establish employer-driven processes,
informed by labor market data, for
determining high-skill, high-demand
industries with which career pathways
must be aligned
Through this 3 year project, Wisconsin will:

Career Pathway Programs vs Regional Career Pathway System
Career pathway programs are a series of connected academic education, technical
training, and support strategies that enable students to secure industry relevant
certification, obtain employment within an occupational area and to advance to higher
levels of future education and employment in that area.
Career pathway systems are made up of multiple career pathway programs that span
educational institutions, workforce and support service partners.
● Increase high school graduation rates● Increase the percentage of students entering
and completing post-secondary education and training
● Increase the percentage of students who pursue a career in a regional pathway
Pathways Wisconsin Vision for K-12:
● Be better prepared for post-secondary education ● Be less likely to require remedial education ● Have an increased awareness of post-secondary
opportunities● Be more likely to complete their degree (with dual
credit and academic and career planning in high school)
● Have less student loan debt
Pathways Wisconsin Vision for Post-Secondary:
● More high-quality partnerships with K-12 districts

learning opportunities.● A higher number of regional career pathways, an
improved system for locating employees who have the interest, skills to work within the industry

for the work
● Participate in public events and opportunities to promote career pathways
● Promote collaboration of career and college readiness initiatives
● Encourage/support work-based learning opportunities
● Prioritize sectors to be developed for regional pathways
• Develop shared vision and collective commitment for regional career pathways work
• Identify key industry sectors based on regional labor market Information
• Identify regional stakeholders, their unique strengths, roles and responsibilities
Year One Regional Outcomes
• Conduct gap analysis to assess PK-16 career pathway services/programs in the region
• Develop a 3-year action plan to reduce barriers for pathway development and participation

● A better prepared workforce, higher quality of hire● Higher retention rates at post-secondary institutions● A more efficient pipeline of employees for our
businesses through improved connections with secondary and post-secondary partners

Leverage current collaboration efforts to:● Enhance and streamline ongoing efforts
region-wide to build career pathways and skills gap initiatives
● Create four sustainable regional councils that will provide leadership, and guidance and allow for creativity
