Developing context and work based mobile learning
in the Construction sectorBIML, 2014Graham Attwell
Initial Research questions:
What should be the pedagogical approach for developing work-
based mobile learning?
Linking different contexts and work and learning domains
authentic work process orientated learning
holistic and integrative working and learning tasks
action-oriented pedagogic approach (Handlungsorientiertes Lernen)
Scaffolding learning
The White Folder tasks per se do not easily transfer into a mobile digital format and even if this approach was to be successful it
would be extremely time consuming to digitalise all tasks in their existing form.
So on to Plan B
86,7% use a smartphone (of which 83% are using Android). 19,4% own a tablet
computer, 59,7% a laptop, 54,7% a desktop computer.
1,9% of employers provide access to the internet and only 27% of employers allow the use of
smartphones at the workplace.
58% apprentices use smartphones for work-related calls and 53,2% for information gathering at work. Gathering information needed for work or training is a task that almost 50% do often or
very often
Few use purpose built construction Apps. Information on possibly helpful apps comes from other apprentices (28,1%) or colleagues at work
(17%). 9,5% heard about them from trainers at the workplace or the training centre. 46,8% obtained
information from the internet
WhatsApp is most used for communication. 19,6% of the apprentices
take photos ‘often’ or ‘very often’
Plan B - Learning toolbox, build a range of services based around existing uses of
technology and activities to share ideas, media and data.
