DANI STAHL Q&AKeaton Row Creative Director, Dani Stahl answers
your fashion & style questions.
keaton row | 17
Q. What is your rule for when to splurge and when to save? For me its always a question of longevity of a piece of clothing. Am I going to be able to wear this
multiple times? Is this a classic piece Ill have for years? Those are questions I always ask myself.
Dont spend your money on the bright pink Prada pants (or whatever you consider to be the
must-have trendy item). Trends fade! It is better to invest in a piece that you will have for a long
time that you will be able to get multiple wears out of. One suggestion I have would be to splurge
on a great leather motorcycle jacket! It is something you can dress up or dress down and it will
never go out of style!
a.
Q. An obstacle many stylists face is trying to pick looks they think their client will like without ever having met them. How do you suggest Stylists style their
first Lookbook for their client?
It all comes down to communication. In todays world it is so easy to get in touch with
someone. Whether youre styling your best friend or someone that you have never met, I
would say the rst thing you should do is send them a personalized email asking them more
about their style. You can have a Skype session with them and they can show you the clothes
that they already have, or can even check out their social media! Lots of times clients will
share their Pinterest boards of fashionsthat they love. This will give you great insight into
their style. No matter what you do the imortant thing is to reach out directly and
communicate with communicate with your clients.
a.
Following up! After you send a client a Lookbook you should follow up with her and see if she
has had a chance to view the Lookbook you created for her. Whenever clients make a
purchase you should encourage them to share images of them in their Keaton Row styled
looks with you. In addition, you should keep in mind key holidays and dates that occur during
the year. You can reach out to clients you havent heard from in a while and see if they would
like you to make a Lookbook for that specic event or occasion. The better and more personal
the relationship you build with your client, the more likely they will want to shop with you
againagain

common question I hear is: "How do I get Clients?" While many of our Elite Stylists now have dozens and even hundreds of Clients addicted to their styling services, we've all wondered - how do I get my very rst client? How do I get my 10th client? This is consistently the #1 question we hear from our Stylists. I am excited to highlight the story of Donna Blank, a new KR Stylist whose innovative marketing resulted in her Keaton Row styling business being featured on the radio in addition to more than tripling her client base in less than 24 hours. Growing up in NY, I spent countless mornings commuting while listening to Elvis Duran's morning show on Z100. You can imagine my excitement when one afternoon in the ofce, our Social Media Coordinator, Kelly, announced that Keaton Row was featured on Z100. I then found out that as Donna thought about how to kick off her Keaton Row business, she took "word of mouth marketing" to an entirely new level. She tweeted personalized Lookbooks, along with offering her Keaton Row styling services to the Z100 crecrew. The following week, Donna and Keaton Row were featured during Z100's Whats Trending segment.
Today, Donna has over 50 clients and continues to grow her business - 1 cli ent and 1 marketing campaign at a time. As the CEO of your own styling business at Keaton Row, you have the opportunity to decide how big you want it to be. You get to call the shots and decide how you want to run your business. I hope Donna's story inspires you to unleash your own creative hats. How do you go beyond your network of friends and family for your next Client? How do you market to your Clients? Inspire your fellow style entrepreneurs and us. We'd love to hear from you. Tweet us @keatonrow @elenormak. Finally, with the early signs of spring just around the corner, the timing is perfect to bring your business to the next level. I have been so inspired by all of the fabulous Lookbooks I have seen you create with some of our favorite trends for spring. I know I am ready to shop and I am certain that your clients are as well! Here's to springing forward with your business,

HOW DID YOU START WITH KEATON ROW? I am originally from Texas and when I travel back there, it never fails, I'm always asked When can we going shopping?" or "Do my closet?" So, to answer your question, I was actually googling online styling and one day after starting using your online platform to create look books for clients that didn't live in the NYC metro area.
WHWHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE UPCOMING TREND FOR SPRING? I love a tailored look, shocking, says the co-owner of a custom suit business! The wide leg trousers and tuxedo pants will be a must. However, I will be trying some art inspired -print pieces as well.
WHY DO YOU LOVE STYLING? I love it, because it comes natural to me. It's who I am and who I have always been. I was that kid that went through my entire wardrobe everyday creating outts. Math, science, and history come easy to some people, but none of that interests me. Other than SALES and Prots, of course! Come on, I AM a business woman, people. I can look at fabrics, silhouettes, and body types and just know what will work. It just clicks.
WH WHAT IS ONE STYLING RULE YOU THINK EVERY WOMAN SHOULD FOLLOW? FIT! Don't pass go, do not collect $200! Period. I can't preach this enough. I tell this to my male and female clients. If you love it and you feel it could t with minor alterations, then get it. ONLY IF YOU WILL TAKE IT TO GET ALTERED. If you know you won't then don't buy it. Also, do not pay attention to labels! Buy, what ts and invest in a GOOD TAILOR.
WE LOVE SEEING ALL OF YOUR #KROOTD PICTURES ON INSTAGRAM! WHO TAKES THE PICTURES AND HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHICH OUTFIT YOU WANT TO WEAR ON YOUR "OUTFIT OF THE DAY" POST? Funny you ask! I actually use a self timer app called Photo Timer+. I am usu-ally alone when I have a free moment to take the picture OR I have asked my ance to help me. I had a very good laugh at his photography skills. He was being a real sport about it. In his defense, I did ask him during an Islanders game. I should have known better-so, the self timer it is.

HOW IMPORTANT IS SOCIAL MEDIA IN GROWING YOUR BUSINESS?
It IS BUSINESS. Want to reach consumers? It is the way of the world, you are either a part of this thing called "social media" or you not. And, if youre not then you are not reaching your clients, prospects, vendors, friends, family, marketers and so on. It's the easiest, fastest, most cost effective way to promote yourself and your busness, so it's a no brainier. And, hey, it's fun! You get to interact with all of those people instantly! That is priceless for your business.
WHWHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KR FEATURE THAT YOU ALWAYS SHARE WITH
YOUR CUSTOMERS?
There are two key points I share with my clients when telling them about Keaton Row. 1. It's FREE. Everyone is budget conscience these days and this is a very HUGE selling point! It immediately removes the stress and pressure from your Clients and makes it a more fun and exciting experience. 2. It's going to be 100% customized to them. That is why it's so crucial that their prole is completed in its entirety. If not, it's not giving your Stylist all of the information they really need to benet both of you. I know that some people think it's embarrassing to post a few pictures but this is a huge help. And, Ladies, as much as we love seeing your beautiful faces, we NEED FULL LENGTH pictures. The pictures should give your Stylist the guidance they need when tting your body type. What you see when you look in the mirror may not be what is really there. This happens a lot with Clients that are going through recent weight gain or loss, liare going through recent weight gain or loss, like after a pregnancy or loss of loved one.
HOW DO YOU ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH TO YOUR BUSINESS?
Going back to the last question, I see what I do as more than just picking out clothes for a person and sending them on their way. I really listen to my clients. I offer them my personal phone number, Skype screen name, email, etc. If you want to comment on an Instagram picture to get my attention, that works for me. I want to empower my clients to embrace their bodies as they are NOW regardless, if they plan to lose or gain weight. Because until you reach that goal, you have to wake up and get dressed everyday until you obtain that goal. I really hate hearing clients belittle themselves and say they CAN'T wear this or that because of where thCAN'T wear this or that because of where they are today. Well, I take that as a personal challenge and I like to prove them wrong. I teach them how they can incorporate pieces into their wardrobe that I call "transitional" pieces that will work for them now and through their journey or even past that.
HAVE YOU SET ANY 2014 STYLING OR BUSINESS GOALS - IF SO WHAT
ARE THEY?
Honestly, my goals are always to dress and style as many people as I can. And help them embrace their body by encouraging them to just be condent in their personal style. Condence is half the battle. If you are condent, you walk taller, you look slimmer, more attractive and that is without stepping into a gym or spending a dime.
WHAT IS YOUR BEST MOMENT, SO FAR, WITH KEATON ROW & YOUR
BUSINESS?
I have to say it was a very exciting morning for me when I heard Carla Marie on z100's Elvis Duran Morning Show talk about me sending her a look book on "What's Trending." I received a lot more attention than I expected and it was nice to have family and friends be able to hear it, live on the radio, even in Texas. (See tweet pics above!)
