inister for Maritime A�airs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi visited KPT Head O�ce on 14th September 2018. The Minister was given a detailed brie�ng on KPT’s geography, historical data, �nancial health, initiatives taken by KPT,
existing facilities and future development projects. Various projects of capacity and capability enhancement which came under discussion include LNG Complex, KPT Freight Corridor, Port Connectivity, Sewerage Treatment Plant and Real Estate Development and Maritime Business Enclave in TPX area.
The Minister for Maritime A�airs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi appreciated the overall performance of KPT and bestowed his absolute con�dence in senior management and the able leadership of Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt. The Minister desired that untapped resources of blue economy be capitalized through automation to ensure transparency and productivity. He said that it is a matter of satisfaction for him to see that KPT plays a pivotal role in the �nancial and economic strengthening of the nation.

The visit of Newly Appointed Secretary for Maritime Affairshe Secretary Maritime A�airs Mr. Aamir Ashraf Khwaja visited KPT Head O�ce on 13th September 2018 after taking charge. In a detailed brie�ng given by Chairman
KPT Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt, the Secretary Maritime A�airs was informed about the overall infrastructure and projects that includes Deep Water Port, LNG Complex, Elevated Express Ways at various points, Freight corridors under CPEC regime (covering rail, road and white oil pipeline connectivity), cargo village at various points on KPT land including the TPX area and other road connectivity being undertaken by the port. Mr. Khwaja was further informed that KPT has capability to handle even mother LNG vessels due to its strategic location and depth. The Chairman KPT also informed that the construction of elevated expressway will shorten the connectivity linkage for transportation of cargo to upcountry destinations and at the same time these roads help in stopping encroachments on marshy backwater areas of KPT land.

Other projects like dedicated bulk cargo and chemical terminals at newly constructed berths were also discussed during the brie�ng.
Besides this, the Chairman KPT informed the Secretary about requirements of further tugs
and pilot boat procurements at which KPT desires Ministry’s full support. The Secretary Maritime A�airs assured complete support of government on KPT projects and said that issues faced by KPT will also be resolved accordingly.
Later, the Secretary Maritime A�airs Mr. Aamir Ashraf Khwaja visited the South Asia Pakistan Terminal to witness the ongoing progress of KPT projects.
KPT Signs Agreement with Inros Lackner for the Reconstruction of OP-I

arachi Port Trust has signed a designed engineering consultancy agreement for the reconstruction of Oil Pier-I (OP-I) with M/s Inros Lackner (Germany) and Techno Consult (JV) on 18th September 2018. It
will upgrade the existing OP-1 facility to handle 100,000 Dead Weight Tonnage (DWT) tankers at Karachi Port. The reconstructed facility of OP-1 will be able to handle all types of liquid cargoes at the port. Consultants will prepare design, estimates and tender document under the agreement signed in KPT Head O�ce.
Karachi Port has three oil piers at present. The OP-1 has outlived its life of 40 years since its construction in 1978. Presently, the oil pier has the capacity to handle 8 million tons per annum liquid cargo from 75,000 DWT vessels.

he Caretaker Federal Minister for Maritime A�airs & Foreign A�airs, Mr. Abdullah Hussain Haroon, visited the
Karachi Port Trust to review the progress of port projects on 13th July 2018. Chairman Karachi Port Trust Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M) T.Bt and Trustees of Karachi Port Trust attended the session. The Minister was briefed by Chairman KPT about the infrastructure/ ongoing setup of Karachi Port Trust along with the projects of the port like the Shuttle Freight Train from KPT to Dhabeji, Chemical and Edible
Oil Terminal, Cargo Village & Industrial Park, etc. The Minister took keen interest in the Shuttle Freight Train from KPT to Dhabeji project. It is in this regard, the Chairman also informed further that for the enhancement of cargo transportation, KPT is taking Pakistan Railways onboard.
The Chairman Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt while highlighting the performance of KPT, informed the Minister for Maritime A�airs & Foreign A�airs, Mr. Abdullah Hussain Haroon
that KPT has crossed 54 million tons cargo handling and that in few years KPT will break the 75 million tons cargo handling barrier as South Asia Pakistan Terminals has also shortly become operational which has the Capacity to handle 3.1 TEUs Containers annually. The Minister Mr. Abdullah Hussain Haroon appreciated the e�ciency and speedy work progress on the occasion and issued necessary directives.

KPT’s Port Operations Team Saves Fishermen Boat From Drowning
�shing boat “Muhammad Shah Bukhari” with 22 �shermen on board was reported to be found sinking o�
near the entrance of Karachi Port on 11th August 2018. SOS situation was immediately responded to KPT Crisis Management Cell (CMC) and KPOC.
Harbour Master sta� took charge of the situation and deployed the tugs “Taqatwar” and “Tanomand” for rescuing the crew members. After recovering the crew, the sunken vessel was towed to Bhit Island.
The crew members on board were shifted to KPT Hospital for necessary medical assistance. Prompt action by the Crisis Management Cell and professional response by KPT Tugs averted a crisis situation.

s a demonstration of strong support to raise major water reservoirs, the Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Jamil
Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt, responding to the positive gesture of Chief Justice of Supreme Court,
Honorable Justice Saqib Nisar, announced the contribution of his one month salary, two days’ o�cers pay and one day employees pay towards the project of construction of water reservoirs/dams to �ght impending water
scarcity. The contribution of o�cers and employees of KPT is for a national cause and it will pave way for the much needed construction of dams in Pakistan.

hours for 2 minutes followed by national �ag hoisting by the Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M) T.Bt on this ceremonial occasion to mark the 71st Independence Day of Pakistan, with great fervour.

from battalions of Port Security Force Department, Port Fire Service Department, Tra�c Department, Port Civil Defence Department, Sports Department, Marine Apprentices, Trade Apprentices, Sea Scouts and Pakistan Navy Band on the occasion which was attended by all the KPT o�cers and workers.
On this occasion, the Chairman KPT Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt also initiated the
plantation campaign through tree Plantation at KPT Head O�ce under the theme of “Green Pakistan”.
Chairman KPT Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar HI(M), T.Bt distributed Prizes amongst the declared best O�cer and best employees of the year 2017-18 and also to students of KPT Schools on securing A-1 Grades in SSC Examinations 2017-18.

Education Department of KPT organized one week session in all KPT Schools and KPT Industrial Home, Keamari, to provide basic First Aid Training to students and sta� to meet emergencies.
To enhance the Maritime knowledge of Shipping and Logistics Sector, KPT Sta� College conducted an ICS-Open Day Session in collaboration with Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers (ICS) on 12th September 2018. Capt. Khursheed Khalid, CEO, SEABIZ International and Capt. Jehangir, Floating Master of KPT were the Leading Speakers. 60 Participants of various KPT departments had attended the session.
Training Program for KPT School Teachers at Bahria Institute In continuation to the Teachers Training Program for KPT School Teachers, a training program was arranged at Bahria Insititure of Teacher Training at BCK NORE-I from August to October 2018 for the Capacity Building and Professional Development of teachers. The Aim of the training program is to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitude of teachers in the �elds of Character Building, Syllabus Completion of Maths\Physics \Urdu and a workshop to deal with Dyslexic Children. 20 Teachers of KPT Schools attended the said workshops/training courses.

A Two-day course on E�ective Management Skills was conducted by Mr. Zamir Ahmed, Ex-DG, EOBI and Mr. Muhammad Abdul Malik, Training O�cer of KPT at KPT Sta� College on 15th & 16th August 2018. The course was participated by 23 o�cers and employees of various KPT departments. The participants were motivated to learn modern management skills and techniques.

Big Hands for Syed Izhar-ul-Haq, Assistant Electrical Engineer
A Three day workshop on “Organization Behavior, Con�ict Management and Resolution of Labour Management Problems” was conducted by NILAT from 4th to 6th September 2018 at their campus in Karachi. Objective of these courses was to enhance knowledge and skills in an e�cient and e�ective manner. Four o�cers from CM&EE-I, Tra�c and Public Relations departments (KPT) had attended the said training program.
An o�cer from OD Department of KPT attended a 05-Days course on “Basic Labour Law”, organized by KPT at NILAT Karachi from 6th to 10th August 2018. The main objective of this workshop was to promote and foster Labour Administration training and development opportunities in order to facilitate good industrial relations, safe and healthy working environment at public and private organizations.

07 Days Course on EHSMS Awareness & EHS Policy at KPT Staff College
The EHSMS is a project funded by World Bank for the implementation of EHS Management System in KPT. In this regard KPT conducted EHS Training Sessions on regular basis. The Awareness program is e�ectively supporting the design & implementation of an environmental management system. Three EHSMS sessions were conducted in the 3rd Quarter of the year 2018, and 69 participants from various departments had attended. Total 1334 participants have been trained in 47 cycles of EHSMS so far.

Educational & Training Facilities in KPT
Brief History:A Primary school was started with the name of Humby Primary School Manora in 1889: system of education was quite di�erent from the present one. classes were held only for languages – Sindhi, Gujrati and English etc. In 1947, the Head Master of the School was Mr. Chala Ram. Hindu teachers left for india and one of the teacher Ms. Dina Nath was promoted as Head Mistress of this school. Mr. Inayatullah and Mrs. Aziza Bano were the only Muslim, Assistant Teacher On 1st April, 1948 the expansion of the school started and a new Lady Teacher Mrs. Razia Begum was appointed. The name of the school was changed to Zafar Hussain Primary School, Manora, the cause of education and reorganizing the Primary School on Policy.
In 1949, Mrs. Qamar Jehan and Mrs. Razia Hashmi were also amongst those teachers who devoted their services to education in the early stages of development. In 1959: it was felt by Govt. of Sindh that department of Education can not run it e�ciently. The school building was taken over by K.P.T and since 1960 the school started functioning as Izhar Abbasi Girls Secondary School. Manora, There was co-education system and School strength increased at a fast speed and it was felt that this school should be bifurcated into two schools.
Thus in 1960, another school namely Boys Lower Secondary School was started for Boys only. While Izhar Abbasi Girls Secondary School was made exclusively for girls. Due to increase in the number of students in 1968 Zafar Hussain Primary School Manora was bifuracated into two schools viz: Zafar Hussain Primary School No. I, and Zafar Hussain Primary School No. II. (Manora)
In 1967, a Kindergarten school was established for Children of residents of Manora preferably for children of KPT Employees. During 1963-69 a Primary school started at West Wharf and Lower Secondary School at West Wharf which was upgraded to a full-�edged Secondary School in 1974. Due to increase of students tremendously, two other primary schools No. I & II, were started in 1970 and kindergarten School was established at Lalazar: on 6th November, 1973.
There were three Industrial Homes viz. at Manora, Keamari and West Wharf. There were classes of sewing, knitting, and Embroidery work.
There were Fourteen (14) institutions working under KPT till 1980.
Presently, KPT is running One Industrial Home and 06 KPT Schools on Welfare Basis under Education Department KPT.
K.P.T has also handed over one Primary School, Keamari to the Citizens Foundation in August 2005, keeping in view that it will create a healthy competition between KPT schools and privately school as Citizens Foundation School.
