Pothole-infested roads in these areas are becoming a source of grow- ing irritation for motorists who have to negotiate damaged road surfaces on a daily basis. Motorists and residents in the area said they are fed up and demand the municipality to fix the potholes fast. “Our roads are terrible. It is as if something is eating away at them. It is so bad that you can’t even call it potholes, it much more resembles craters dug by a machine,” said an irate Gerty Jantjies from Attie Street in Arcadia. “Our cars get damaged because everywhere there are potholes. The municipality seriously needs to do something about the roads that have been in a deplorable state for several years now.” Jantjies continued that the women cannot even wear pretty high heals, because you will have to replace the heal every few steps. “Every time it rains, our hearts aches because we know the existing problem with our roads are only go- ing from bad to worse,” said Jantjies. “We have been crying about main- taining these poor roads, but there is no change. We do not know what is going on with our municipality. Plaatjies feel that they are not be- ing regarded as human beings by the municipality. “No person can be expected to live under such terrible conditions.” Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, said: “While, noticeably, our tar roads took a heavy beating from the recent heavy rains, our gravel roads are actually worse off. Work that had been done previously, was also undone by the constant torren- tial showers. “On a general overview, the worst affected areas are Paradise Beach, St Francis Bay and Kruisfontein and Vergenoeg in KwaNomzamo, Hu- mansdorp. Work will soon start on gravel roads in the Kouga area, with the Golf Course informal settlement in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp be- ing the starting point. At the moment we are busy with the acquisition of the relevant machinery, with the grader already secured. We now need to secure an excavator for loosening the base course.” Sobele continued that as for Hob- son Street in Arcadia, the street where Koerat lives, it was paved during the previous term of the council. high on the list of criminals.“Since the beginning of August three Toyo-

taswere stolen. Two of the vehicleswere stolen

while parked at two different malls, while thethird vehicle was stolen at the golf club. Thesevehicleswere stolen inbroaddaylightwhile se-curity was patrolling the area in most cases.“The police would like to warn the public to

once again ensure that their vehicles arelocked and the necessary safety devices and/ormobilisers are in place and switched on. Re-port suspicious looking people and vehicles tothe police.”The JeffreysBayPolice have also experienced

an increase in the incidents of theft out of motorvehicles. “Five incidents of theft out ofmotor ve-hicles have been reported since the beginningof this month. In most cases drivers left valua-bles laying in plain sight in their vehicles, crea-ting an open invitation for criminals.”

AGROUP of car guards have been equippedwith high quality reflective jackets as wellas business cards to help reduce crime inJeffreys Bay.These car and community watchers, who

have all been screened by the Jeffreys BayPolice, will be deployed across the town tokeep an eye on parked cars and also deterbusiness robberies and muggings.Police spokesperson, w/o Petra Els, said

Each one of these guardswill be allo-cated to a specific area where he or she willwork on a permanent basis.

KOUGA Municipality bids farewell to one of thesons of the soil and one of our area’s most pre-cious assets.

Our former Strategic Services Director Mzi-woxolo Jabu Ngcayisa sadly passed away lastweek. A hard worker, a loyalist of the public heserved, a strategist and an intellectual. Thislarger than life figure made an indelible markinour institutionandexecuted every taskgivento him with due diligence.

He could always be relied upon at times whenthere would be a vacuum and leadership wasneeded. He was entrusted to form part of oursenior management structure for two termsand held reigns as Acting Municipal Managerwhen called upon to do so.

Our thoughts are with his family during thisdifficult time. He will be laid to rest at a placethat was dearest to him, Roodefontein nearHankey. on Saturday morning.

Members of the Blue Print Project, an initiative of the Department of Environmental Affairs, cleaned up the beach in front of Pellsrus yesterday. Not only did they pick up all rubble, butthey also removed alien vegetation in order for the natural vegetation, such as Fynbos, to re-establish itself in the area. As part of the project they have involved the learners from PellsrusPrimary School, teaching them more about the environment and how to take better care ofthe environment they live in. The two year project kicked off last year August and covers thebeaches from Van Stadens to Eerste River in Tsitsikamma.

wakker in Kaapstad.”

So gesê so gedaan.

Botswana tegaan sien.

WITH the hospitality industry ex-periencing record growth, therehas never been a more excitingtime to enter into the culinaryworld.

The culinary industry in the countryhas expanded extensively and is nowup to par with most culinary Mecca’sacross the world - with an emphasis onlocal flavours, organic ingredients, aswell as a rise in SouthAfrican celebritychefs, South Africa is one of the topcompetitors within the culinary world. With this growinghospitality industry, many culinary schools have been esta-blished across the country, offering in-tensive training in hopes of deliveringoutstanding culinary masterminds. One such school is 3 Fat Fish School

of Food in Jeffreys Bay.Established in February 2010, hus-

band andwife team, Brent andEmmy-Lou Mills opened 3 Fat Fish in order

to give something back to the commu-nity. Having travelled all over France,Italy, Croatia and the America’s, andafter opening restaurants in Durban,St Francis Bay and Jeffreys Bay,Brent and Emmy-Lou decided to usetheir passion and knowledge of food toteach young food enthusiasts aboutthe culinary industry.Offering daily cooking, baking and

theory classes, head-chef, Brent, andhead-lecturer, Emmy-Lou, hope to in-spire their students to excel in every as-pect of the traditional culinary arts. With exciting subjects such as nutri-tion, wine tasting and theory, food pho-tography, cocktailmaking, organic gar-dening, Artisan-style baking and Lindtchocolate workshops, 3 Fat Fish offersa unique experience that incorporatesall spheres of the culinary world.Currently, 3 Fat Fish School of Food

offers a six-month intense commischef certificate, catering for a maxi-mum of six students per course. How-ever, as of February 2013, 3 Fat Fishwill cater for up to twelve students, of-

fering a 1 year City and Guild certifi-cate and Diploma. This new 1 yearCity and Guild accreditation elevates3 Fat Fish into an exciting new leagueas it opens doors to numerous fantas-tic career opportunities. While 3 Fat Fish continues to grow,

themost challenging aspect accordingto Emmy-Lou is, “finding studentchefs who are passionate, self-moti-vated and willing to learn.” The culi-nary industry is intense and Emmy-Lou believes students need to “takewhat they learn and turn it into some-thing beautiful.”With their diverse School of Food,

Brent and Emmy-Lou hope to create alegacy, both here in the Eastern Cape, andhopefully internationally. “Bycre-ating and nurturing talented commischefs, we hope to contribute to, and al-so transform, this fantastic hospitalityindustry we find ourselves in today.”For information on the 3 Fat Fish

DIE tyd het aangebreek.. .

Addo Olifantpark, African

Tribute to the late JabuNgcayisa

Phumzile Oliphant, PortfolioCouncillor Local Economic De-velopment, writes: A son of thesoil has passed on.Born on the hills and valleys of

the Gamtoos he spent his youthdays as a rural child and wasbrought up and given educationby peasants. They sacrificed withtheir blood and sweat - possessingabsolutely nothing and yet, theymanaged to give their son educa-tion. Even though the brutal sys-tem of apartheid was not in fa-vour of a black child acquiring

that kind of education, the pa-rents of Jabu outclassed the infe-rior, suppressive, dragonisticand inhumane system.Jabu - an academic, a parent

and tested cadre - played his partlocally, regionally provincially, nationally and to an extent con-tinually. He worked many yearsfor Coca Cola and travelled al-most all countries in Africa, hefurther worked for Cell C beforehe was employed as a director forstrategic services.Because of his intellectual ca-

pabilities he became the longestservingdirector in theKougaMu-nicipality. He mastered all tasksgiven to him - he was indeed a ge-nius. I knowhimas hewas a closefriend - I became his politicalhead from June 2011 after the lo-cal government elections. As aportfolio councillor for local eco-nomic development - I was highlyfortunate to have a director suchas him - I enjoyed listening to hisinputs and advice. He wouldmake sure you leave his office ful-ly understanding whatever hewas sharing with you.Kouga and its people have lost

an asset which inmy own convic-tion i conclusively and boldly at-test: no onewill ever replace him.We were shocked and deeply

saddened by his demise indeed -a loss not only to his family andfriends but to the entire popula-tion of the Kouga. He was indeeda down to earth and humble man- we will miss him for as long aswe live.During these days of darkness

Iwant to assure thewife, childrenand friends that we mourn thedeath of Jabu with you. The pro-duct we all treasured is no more.Let us remain resolute and emu-late the good things Jabu did inKouga and beyond.HAMBA KAHLE QHAWE

Ratepayers - Why nottoy-toy?

Ratepayer from Jeffreys Baywrites:Ratepayerswhydowenottoy-toy at the municipal offices? That seems to be the way to get

results other than burning tyresand throwing stones. The roads are so full of potholes

that our cars are being wrecked, but no one cares. We have to payfor our own repairs and replace-ments. Jeffreys Bay’s roads mustsurely be the worst in the countryandnothing is being done about it.The old cry: “No money”, but

where has it all gone. The bestthey do is fill a holewith sand, butcome the next rains and it is allwashed out. That is when it allstarts again.
