WATERwoesof residents fromthe lowincome residential areas in JeffreysBay, is set to be somethingof thepast

in the near future.

A new 7 Megalitre reinforced concrete re-servoir to the tune of R18 million is set to beconstructed in Jeffreys Bay. The reservoirsite will be situated at the existing reservoirsite directly behind, south of the FountainsMall, approximately 4.5km from the NationalRoad (N2).Tenders are currently being invited.According to Kouga municipal spokesper-

son, Laura-Leigh Randall, the aim is to com-plete the tender process and appoint a serviceprovider within 120 days of the closing date- September 13, 2013 - of the tender. “Oncework starts, time for the practical completionof the project is about 37 weeks, calculatedfrom the commencement date.”This project forms part of bulk infrastruc-

ture for the Kouga Municipality.According to Randall, the infrastructureto be constructed is specifically earmarkedfor the low income residential areas ofOcean View, Tokyo Sexwale and Pellsrus.“It is intended to provide these communitieswith a safe, reliable and environmentallyfriendly potable water supply reservoir andsystem.”At present these low income residential

areas are being supplied with water from theexisting 8Ml potable water reservoir, which

serves the central and western portion of theJeffreysBay area.Due to the dramatic growthwithin the domestic market in the area, themunicipality urgently requires additionalstorage within their potable water manage-ment system.

“The project also has a local economic de-velopment aspect. The tender requires that atleast 10% of the contract value must be sub-letted to SMMEs/ emerging sub-contractorsfrom the Kouga area,” says Randall.“It also requires that a minimum of 20 local

job opportunities must be created for the du-ration of the contract.”Women are to make up at lest 20% of the

total local labour employment, while 40% ofmust consist of youth and 20% of men overthe age of 35.

NUCLEAR energy experts from around theworld and South Africa converged at theBoardwalk in Port Elizabeth for a three-daynuclear conference from August, 14 till 16.

The Nuclear Industry Association of SouthAfrica (NIASA)held its annual industry con-vention to discuss opportunities for compa-nies to be involved with the nuclear energyplants in the pipeline.Several internationally renownedscientists

attended the conference which NIASA saidwould be beneficial for companies who had

never explored the industry.Programme Director, Dr Kelvin Kemm,

said, “Companies which have never been in-volved in nuclear activities before can enterthe developments at this early stage. Therewill also be a number of opportunities to meetthevarious companies that are involved in thenuclear industry and network with the cur-rent industry players.”EasternCape (E.C.)DepartmentofEconom-

Volgens Grobler dien die lakens en slopenie net ’n praktiese doel nie. “Elke keer wan-neer ’n pasiënt tussen die lakens inkruip,word hy of sy daaraan herinner dat daar nogiemand is wat omgee. Met die wakkerworddie volgende oggend, beur die vrolike kleurehulle sommer weer op.”

Elke lappie word gesny en indiviueel om-gekap voor dit soos ’n groot legkaart op diebed uitgepak word, vertel Grobler. Wanneerdie lappies begin ‘vorm’ aanneem, begin diegroot aanmekaar werk.

“Een lappieskombers vat meer as 12 uur seharde werk en baie liefde. Ek het al nagtedeurgesit en werk as ek nie kon slaap nie.”

A visit to the Kouga by Stevens Mokgalapa,the DA Shadow Minister of Human Settle-ments, led to the shocking discovery of 3 292bucket toilets in the Kouga Local Municipa-lity and a further 1 367 households withoutany toilets.

The backlog of RDP housing is estimatedto be over 9 000.

“Whatwe found in these areaswasaviola-tion of resident’s basic rights due to lack ofaccess to sanitation facilities and shoddyRDP housing,” said Mokgalapa.

This is the reality for many people in theEastern Cape. Census data suggests that 10000 households in the Eastern Cape are us-ing the bucket system and 290 000 house-holds are without any access to sanitationservices.

“The failure of Kouga Municipality to de-liver services requires investigation. TheDA will therefore write to the HumanRights Commission (HRC) requesting anurgent investigation of the poor sanitationand housing delivery within the municipa-lity and the province at large,” added Mok-galapa.

ShukushukumaResidents of Shukushukuma lives next to asewerage farm, with sewerage flowingthrough the streets. The sewerage farm isnot enclosed and four children have thus fardrowned.

Polla ParkIn Polla Park informal settlement, it wasfound that 300 shacks ae also situated nearthe same sewerage farm. Most of the resi-dents of Polla Park are still using buckettoilets, which are rarely serviced by the

municipality. The amount of chemical toi-lets in the area have decreased by over60% due to a supposed lack of municipalfunds.

StofwolkThe DA found 450 shacks in Stofwolk witha vast majority of residents still using buck-et toilets.

Ocean ViewThere are an estimated 2 000 shacks andno toilets. There have been some RDPhouses built and handed over to residentsin the area. However, toilets in those RDPhouses have not been connected to the lo-cal sewerage systems, rendering them use-less.

WOMEN with babies are faced with manychallenges in today’s society. One of these isthe need to breastfeed their babies and to ge-nerate an income to provide for their familiesat the same time.

Due to the financial burden on women,mothers are sometimes forced to return towork early after giving birth to their babies.Working mothers then stop breastfeeding be-cause of an assumption that continuousbreastfeeding can’t be done. This is due to amyriad of reasons: insufficient time, a lack ofsupport or ignorance in the workplace oreven a lack of the necessary knowledge to em-power themselves to continue breastfeedingtheir babies.

Prof. Hoovadia of the Reproductive Healthand research Unit in Durban is quoted as say-ing, ” Breastfeeding has been scientificallyshown to be far and away the single most im-portant intervention to prevent child

deaths…let’s stop talking now and do some-thing about it.”

But what does that mean practically?.Women who breastfeed need to be empow-ered and encouraged to exclusively breast-feed their babies for at least 6 months and tocontinue breastfeeding thereafter..Should a women need to return to work, sheshould be supported by both her employerand the clinic/breastfeeding sister to be al-lowed to express during the day at work, inorder to provide for her baby’s nutritionalneeds and to sustain breastfeeding..A woman needs a safe and clean environ-ment in which to feed or express at work..Caregivers of these babies need to be sup-ported in feeding expressed breast milk to thebabies correctly and hygienically.

What is your right as breastfeeding employ-ee? The Basic Conditions of Employment Actof 1997, code of good practice on the protectionof employees during pregnancy and after thebirth of a child, states: “Arrangements shouldbe made for employees who are breastfeedingto have breaks of 30 minutes twice per day for

breastfeeding or expressing milk each work-ing day for the first six months of the child’slife.”

The Tshwane declaration of support forbreastfeeding in South Africa was released in2011 and states,” South Africa declares itselfas a country that actively promotes, protectsand supports exclusive breastfeeding.” Thisdeclaration’s aim is to decrease the mortality(death) rate and the burden of disease (di-arhoea, pneumonia ect) in young childrenwhich is increasing at a very disturbing ratein South Africa.

Breastfeeding does not necessarily work foreach woman and the feeding choice of an in-fant remains the responsibility and humanright of the mother. However, the relativelysmall group of women who cannot breastfeedshould not be used as the norm against wom-en who can and who need to breastfeed theirbabies.

someone know when you expect to return.”Another good idea is to never let your

home appear to be empty, regardless ofwhether you are at home or not.

“Visibility can be drastically reduced ongrey, gloomy days and crooks could take ad-vantage of this to try to enter your propertyor burgle your home. Turn on the lights inone or two rooms; possibly one at the frontand another at the rear of the house.”

“Also, never leave the driveway gate open- even if someone is home, if it is pouring withrain or if you plan to only be away for a shortwhile – because criminals could see this asan invitation to come onto your property.”

Kriel added that exercising caution

when driving into or out of your propertyis equally as important. He said grey condi-tions or heavy rainfall could divert your at-tention from what is happening aroundyou, leaving you vulnerable to beingcaught off guard by criminals.

“If you have an electric gate, open it be-fore you turn into your driveway; this willprevent hijackers from boxing you in andallow you the chance to get away. If youhave to manually open the gate, leave thekey in the ignition and the motor running.However you must take the key with youif you have a child in the car. In this kindof hijacking situation the key is a valuablenegotiating tool.”

Tips to keep crime at bay

WE can’t avoid stress in this modern age of instant grati-fication and constant demands.

The good news is that health specialists say we can con-

Limit caffeine which increases blood pres-sure.4. Get regular exercise which produces en-dorphins, is a natural anti-depressant andprevents insomnia.5. Stick to a healthy diet as a balanced dietwill regulate blood sugar.6. Get enough sleep - adults need eight hoursper day to recharge the body.7. Useful relaxation techniques like yoga andmeditation can also help to reduce stress le-vels and encourage a calm state of mind.

topgehalte op Sondag, 8 September aan tebied. Voorts span die Laerskool Lorraine enNMMU vanjaar saam om die fietsryfees ’nspoggeleentheid te maak.

The Humansdorp Secondary School took part in the Provincial TennisChampionships in East London. Both the boys and girls won trophies andmedals in the u.17 division. They also took home the trophies for the bestcoaches. The team will now represent the Eastern Cape at the SA TennisChampionships in Pretoria from December 8 to 14.
