December is not the only time important to the local tourism industry, as two exciting and unique festivals will be held in the villa- ges of St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis next year. Building on the visions of their foun- ders, these villages will celebrate their uniqueness in 2014. Founder of St Francis Bay, as well as NSRI Station 21, Leighton Hulett, lived out his dream of creating a family holiday destina- tion in the St Francis area. He held the first Hobie Cat Challenge, sail boat races down the Kromme River as well as Boxing Day beach buggy races. The Nautical Capital Festival, brainchild of Darryl Earl David of Booktown Richmond fame, intends to build on this nau- tical heritage. “We are extremely thrilled that Darryl David, a man synonymous with liter- ary festivals, approached St Francis with this niche festival,” says Brian Codling, Chairper- son of St Francis Tourism. To build on the brand of Nautical Capital, David plans to launch South Africa’s first Fes- tival of Photography during the last week of April 2014. “Photographers will be kept busy with the charms of St Francis,” gushes David. “A lighthouse, calamari capital of SA, a work- ing harbour, the signature canals of St Fran- cis Bay, wetlands and fynbos... get those cam- era’s out! I think St Francis will get some ‘long exposure’ from this project.” A family day at Port St Francis will lead in- to an All Things Nautical week, with events such as the Cape St Francis Longboard SA Championships, an interclub catch-and-re- lease fishing competition, jet-ski runs and a sand art competition. In October, the village of Cape St Francis will honour the vision of their founder, John Booysen’s wife, Irma, who had been the driv- ing force behind the declaration of Cape St Francis’s various protected nature reserves through hosting the inaugural Seal Point Wild Flower Festival. The Cape St Francis Resort will be host to the festivities, including floral displays, exhi- bitions and informative sessions at the Re- sort. The week long festivities will include ex- citing foraging and cooking with indigenous plants, homeopathy and the healing power of indigenous plants, and lectures on the unique biodiversity of the area. The festivities will be taken outdoors with various guided walks through the reserves, including a half mara- thon through all the nature reserves. “Our little Village has so many fascinating stories that we want to share,” says Fasie Mal- herbe from the Resort. “Our unique biodiver- sity is reason to celebrate. Fynbos is so much part of who we are, even the skippers on the chokka boats will tell you they smell the fyn- bos out at sea.” The Resort already opened their new Activ- ity Centre in anticipation of the Seal Point Wild Flower Festival, where children can en- joy a holiday programme. NEVER was the power of Nelson RolihlahlaMandela as evident in Kouga as on Monday,December 9, when the local Council paid ho-mage to the founding father of South Africa’srainbow nation.Party politics and personal differences fell

to the wayside as councillors spoke as oneabout the almost superhuman contributionTata Madiba made to South Africa and theworld. As a Council, we will remember this son

of our soil for his grace, dignity and unwave-ring commitment to peace, justice and equa-lity.We will remember him as a kind and pa-

tient man whose word was his honour andwhose wisdom spoke to the core of our hu-manity.The Kouga Council will not falter from the

course TataMadiba set when he was releasedfrom prison in 1990 after 27 long years of in-carceration.We will not forget how, with forgiveness in

his heart and the betterment of his belovedcountry in mind, he chartered a course thatliberated each one of us.As a Council, we will also strive to ensure

that Tata Madiba is remembered by all gene-

rations to follow.TataMadiba was both a product andmaker

of history.Born in 1918, he grewup in the soil of Apart-

heid but his island prison could not stop hisroots from shooting deep into the African soiland beyond.Prison bars could not stop this great world

leader from seeding a generation of libera-tion-fighters who, like their icon, were wil-ling to give their lives tonurture a society freefrom oppression.Tata, we salute you and vow to look after

the incredible legacy you left us.Your legacy will live on, not only through

everything that has been named for you butin the way we relate to one another. We areone people, one nation because of you.As aKougaCouncil,we call on all local com-

munities to join hands. Let us reaffirm TataMadiba’s values and recapturehis spirit in allwe do. Let him be the example of what we as-pire to be.Tata, we mourn your loss. Our deepest con-

dolences go to your family. Their pain is ourpain. We further thank God for gifting our coun-

try with a man of such courage and convic-tion. Tata Madiba left an indelible mark onall of humanity.Give us the strength to pick up the baton

and to continue where he left off.Hamba kahle, Tata.

THE owners of the Ski Boat Club in JeffreysBay might face legal action if they do not va-cate their premises as soon as possible.

This is according to speaker MagdaleneDlomo during a special council meeting heldon November 5.According to Dlomo, Council will proceed

with legal action for the eviction of the Jef-freys Bay Ski Boat Club after they ignored awritten notice in January, which informedthem about the termination of their contractwith the Kouga Municipality.

They were given three months to vacatetheir premises since the piece of land is re-quired for municipal services.“The Ski Boat Club did not comply in terms

of the agreement and strongly indicated thatthe eviction will be opposed,” said Dlomo.“Hence the formal application to Council toinstruct their legal representatives to pro-ceed with legal action to evict the Ski BoatClub.”This is despite vehement objections from

the DA.According to DA councillor Brenton Wil-

liams, the municipality is heading towardsyet another costly court case as the Ski Boat

Club has indicated that they will fight theeviction in court.“The Ski Boat Club is even willing to build

a second storey onto the existing building attheir own cost, in order for them as well asthe municipality to utilise the premises,”said Willliams.“Thousands of rands will be lost if the club

is to be closed.”However, the majority of Council was ada-

mant that theSkiBoatClubmust vacate theirpremises immediately. A motion of exigencyby the DA was also overruled.“Thematter has already been resolved and

is not open for debate,” said Dlomo.

AS we approach the festive season, shoppingcentres will be busier than usual and it is im-portant that shoppers keep their wits - andtheir belongings - about them.It is a good idea to carry as little as possible

in your handbag or pockets. Martin Kriel,Managing Director of ADT Security EastCoast Region, suggested leaving any unneces-sary bank or store cards and large amountsof cash at home.“A packed clothing store or supermarket is

theprimehunting-ground for apick-pocket orbag-snatcher. Never leave your handbag, purse or wallet in a trolley. If you don’t usea bag or are not taking one along, keep yourwallet or purse in the front pocket of yourjacket or trousers.”If you need to draw money at an ATM, it

is best to use a machine in a busy area.“Put yourmoney in your purse orwallet be-

fore you walk away from the ATM,” saidKriel. “If you think someone has followed youfrom the machine, walk into the nearest shopor up to a mall security guard if you spot onenearby.”He added that your safety outside the mall

is just as important as it is inside. It is vitalthat you keep yourwits about youwhenwalk-ing the distance between the exit and yourcar, especially at night and even more so ifyou are alone.“Before you exit the mall, have your key

ready so that you don’twaste any time gettingyour purchases and yourself into your car. This also means that you’ll be able to holdtightly onto your handbag while walking. Ifsomeone does try to snatch your handbag, letit go. Do not resist or fight back.”Kriel suggested that if you use public trans-

port, you try to complete your shopping ear-lier rather than later. He added that it is agood idea to check the timetable ahead of yourtrip to the shops so that you don’t have towaittoo long at a bus stop or train station.
