CHRISTMAS 2014 KORRAL SOUND & VISION 1 Welcome to our Brief Christmas edition of our newsletter, and a Happy Christmas to all. It's been a good year, and we all are prepared for a good 2015. The weather is apparently to be bad, so after the Christmas dinner, and when the kids are gone to bed, the home cinema system will be in full force, of course accompanied by a glass of Port and Christmas Pud. It being Christmas, we thought we'd put out a newsletter, with a few specials, and a Talkback feature, which I hope you like. We're always tweaking here, adding and subtracting bits and pieces, the usual. One piece of news is, Korral Sound & Vision are about to release our own stone isolation base, mainly for turntables, but we will be testing it with other products also, so watch this space for more info. The concept is fairly simple, but we hope to pitch it at a friendly 150, which compared to others is excellent value for money. The first batch will be manufactured to order, and shipped, or can be collected, as always we can meet in an agreed area such as Waterford, Carlow, Portlaoise and Arklow. If we have a vehicle in the area, we will of course accommodate also. Well, have a good Christmas and a great New Year from all of us at Korral Sound & Vision, our next newsletter is destined for the spring. Give us a call, or email if we can help in any way. Welcome to our Brief Christmas edition of our newsletter, and a Happy Christmas to all.

The concept is fairly simple, but we hope to pitch it at a friendly €150, which compared to others is excellent value for money.

Talkback

Digital Music has come of age in the last few years, no longer do we need to spend vast amounts of money to get real Hi-fidelity. The market has become flooded of late with new systems from Naim & Samsung to name a couple, some very expensive, some remarkably cheap. With so many offerings out there at low low prices, do we need the high end? It does depend on our systems to begin with, as if you have a high end setup, well you'll want high end performance naturally, and there's a few of these around, but where's the cutoff point, between serious and true audiophilia?

We, recently we have had a bit of head-scratching in that arena. The duo of Marantz, proper hi-fi network players are a serious statement of just how jaw-droppingly good digital music can be. The only problem is that the flexibility of playing music in different rooms, and choosing smaller, cheaper units where necessary starts to complicate matters a bit.

Our current favourites, and probably the best of their type is of course Sonos. Sonos are everywhere at the minute, practically taking over, even the general electrical shops have jumped in on the act, (although I have spoken to customers who were given advise which was too simplistic, and end up asking proper Hi-Fi shops questions, as the system doesn't work as they quite expected). Advice such as running a network drive on iTunes, HD Audio, mapping Networks, the feedback hasn't been good. Unlike these stores, we decided to explore the worlds (and indeed ours) most popular brand, and it's place in the pecking order of Hi-Fi Land. We know of the flexibility of Sonos, far beyond the vast majority of systems out there, we know the stand alone speakers are very good, the connect amp is so good, throw out your Sony all-in-one, your Samsung box, these babies knock their socks off. So the real question is how good is the connect, how high up can it go, and we wanted to know.

First, the format, what to use. Ok, we're Apple people, not everyone is, but the idea of having one format, then importing all that into Apple when the iPod or iPhone is used, well, it's a bit crazy to say the least, so sticking with Apple seems logical, and the easiest answer. It was considered trying different Apple rips, but that defeats the purpose as let's face it, Apple lossless is what hi-fi people will use, so that's that sorted, I suppose we already had 1800 albums ripped to Apple lossless, so, convenience reins. So the quality, we have it connected to a Ruark R4i, and it sounds amazing, comparatively as

good as cd, which was expected, happy so far, and on to our in house setup, marantz 15 series SACD and Amp, Wharfedale Jade 5 speakers, and the usual good cables, stand and mains conditioner.

The Connect is good, impressive for what it is, ok compared to cd on the SACD player, lacking, but still good, enjoyable, so let's bypass that DAC, and slot in a Musical Fidelity M1 DAC. I was very surprised in the leap of performance, now becoming almost identical to the SACD player playing a cd, then the sign from above came, we started discovering our music again, we're on a winner, but the curious George in us all crept in, let's try the New Marantz DAC / Headphone Amp (we know it's excellent with our Sennheiser HD598), so let's see if there's a step up?

The simple answer, yes, totally amazing, really impressed, more than expected being honest., and a serious recommendation for the HD-DAC1. Serous hi-end, ok, we'd stick with the Na-11, it's the best we've ever heard, by a bit. Now as always, there's a drawback, Sonos currently does not support HD Audio, yet, we have emailed, let's hope the answer is good.......watch this space!
