    Thank you for purchasing theKO RG D4 Digi tal Recorder

    .

    In order to take full advantage of the D4 and en joy trou ble-free operation, please read this m anu al carefully. After you

    have read this man ua l, please keep it for futu re reference.

    M a in fea tures

    The D4 is a digital mu lti-track recorder that uses Com-pactFlash as its recording and storage medium .

    The D4 lets you record ind ividual tracks using a gu itar,

    keyboard, mic, or other instruments, and then m ix your

    tracks into a completed song all without requiring any

    additional equipm ent. The D4 also contains a full comp le-

    men t of Editing tools such as copy, delete, expan sion,

    comp ression and m ore.

    CompactFlash

    CompactFlash provides a convenient and reliable media

    format for record ing and archiving your d ata. This solid-

    state media requires no bu lky drive m echanism, keeping

    the D4 qu iet and por table. You can also use th e USB con-

    nector to send the recorded d ata to your compu ter.

    Virtual tracks

    The D4 has four recording/ playback tracks. Each track

    provides 8 virtu al tracks. These virtual tracks give you th e

    equ ivalent of 32 tracks (4 tracks

    8) of mu lti-track record-

    ing.

    Effects

    The built-in effect un it fea tures Korgs modelingtechnology, and contain s 100 d ifferent effect programs cre-

    ated by p rofessional mu sicians and engineers. You can

    also save 100 of your ow n or iginal effect p rogram s in the

    user area.

    Rhythm p a tterns

    Metronome and PCM rhythm p atterns are provided as

    reference and to enhance your recordings.

    Additional features

    The D4 provides other functions such as a tu ner and

    assignable locate poin ts to meet your record ing needs.

    Fea tures of the D4 a nd their function

    1 . To p pa n el

    1. [IN PUT 2] mic input jack

    You can connect a mic to th is balanced XLR jack. If

    you use th is jack, set the rear p anel [INPUT 2] switchto EXT (MIC).

    2 . M IC (in te rna l mic)

    3 . IN PUT LEVEL [1] , [2] knobs

    These knobs ad just the level of the inputs. The optimal

    setting is the highest level that does not cause the

    LEDs to light .

    You may hea r hu m or noise if you raise the INPUT LEVEL [1],

    [2] knob levels when nothing is connected t o the inp ut jacks.

    4 . TRACK ASSIGN [1 ] , [2 ] keys

    These keys assign are used to assign the signal from

    the [INPUT 1] and [INPUT 2] jacks to tracks. The

    [INPUT 1] jack corresp ond s to th e TRACK ASSIGN [1]

    key, and the [INPUT 2] jack correspond s to the [2] key.

    When you press one of the TRACK ASSIGN keys, that

    key will light. Next, press the [PAN] knob correspond -ing to the d estinat ion track. Both the REC SELECT

    LED and TRACK ASSIGN keys will light, ind icating

    the input jack is assigned to that track.

    TUN ERTo access the Tuner mode, press the TRACK ASSIGN

    [1], [2] keys simultaneously. The tuner function lets

    you tun e an external instru ment. Since the effects arebypassed in Tuner mod e, this provides a w ay for you

    to comp are the sound with th e effects on or byp assed.

    The Tuner function w ill not operate d uring p layback or d ur-

    ing record-stand by.

    5 . [PRE/ FAVE] (favorite) knob

    Turn th is knob to select the effect you want to use.You can register your eleven favorite effects to this

    knob, and select them simp ly by turn ing the knob.

    When the D4 is shipped from th e factory, the eleven

    effects p rinted on th e pan el are the effects assigned to

    this knob. To assign you r ow n favorites, refer to Step

    7. Using effects in the Operation section.

    If youve used the [REC SEL] keys to select a record ing

    track, press the [REC] key and then pr ess the [PLAY]

    key to begin record ing.

    The [PLAY] key will remain lit dur ing p layback or

    recording.

    If you p ress this key dur ing playback, the playback

    will slow d own to half-speed - without changing the

    pitch - making it easy to play along with a difficult

    ph rase as you practice.

    While setting the In, Out, To, or End times in track

    editing, you can press this key to play back app roxi-

    mately two second s from that time location.

    RECPressing this key will arm the D4 for record ing (record -

    ready m ode). The key w ill blink. In or der to enter

    record-ready m ode, you need to p ress the [PAN]knob(s) for the track(s) you wish to r ecord - the selected

    tracks LED w ill light. Wh en you then press the [PLAY]

    key, the key will light and recording w ill begin.

    STO PThis key stops the record ing or p layback; the recorder

    will stop.

    If you p ress this key while already stopp ed, the songwill be saved and you w ill return to the beginning of

    that song.

    REW (Rew ind)This key moves to the beginning of the song. If you

    press and h old this key during p layback, the time

    location will move rapidly toward the beginning of

    the song.

    FF (Fa st For w a rd)If you p ress and hold this key du ring playback, the

    time location w ill move rapid ly toward the end of the

    song.

    2 4 . [U N D O ] k ey

    Use this key to und o the most recent recording or

    track editing opera tion, or to cancel the Und o opera-

    tion (i.e., redo)

    After p erforming a recording or editing operation,you can p ress the [UNDO] key to return to the state

    prior to executing that op eration.

    In order to use th is function, the SYSTEM mode UNDO

    page setting AutoUnd o must be turned On.

    Undo information is preserved u ntil you p erform the next

    recording or track editing operation.

    2 . Rea r p a nel

    1 . [IN PU T 1 ] sw i tch

    Set this switch for the type of d evice connected to the

    [INPUT 1] jack.

    GTR: Use this setting if youve connected a gu itar or

    bass guitar.MIC: Use this setting if youve connected a m ic.

    LINE: Use this setting if youve connected a line-level

    2 . [IN PU T 1 ] ja ckYou can connect a gu itar, bass, or keyboard to th is

    monau ral phone jack.

    3 . [IN PU T 2 ] sw itch

    Set this switch for the type of device connected to the

    [INPUT 2] jack.

    (MIC) INT: Use this setting if youre u sing the D4s

    interna l mic.

    (MIC) EXT: Use this setting if youre u sing the

    [INPUT 2] jack at mic level. This is app ropr iate for a

    mic inpu t.

    LINE: Use this setting if youre u sing the [INPUT 2]

    jack a t line level. This is approp riate for a line-level

    device. In th is case, you cant use the top panel

    [INPUT 2] mic input jack.

    4 . [IN PU T 2 ] ja ck

    You can connect a line-level dev ice (e.g., the output of

    a keyboard or effect p rocessor) here. You can also use

    this w ith the [INPUT 1] jack for stereo input . This is a

    monau ral phone jack.

    When you u se this jack, you cant use the top panel[INPUT 2] mic input jack.

    5 . [M ASTER O UT] jack

    These jacks output the stereo audio signal. Connect

    the D4 to your external monitor system or recording

    equipment v ia these RCA-style jacks.

    6 . [PU N CH IN / O U T] ja ckYou can connect a pedal switch (sold separately: PS-1)

    to this jack for perform p unch-in/ out recording.

    7. [USB] connectorUse a USB cable to connect the D4 to your comp uter.

    8 . [DC 9V] connector

    Connect the includ ed AC adapter to th is connector.

    9 . [PO W ER] sw i tch

    This switches the D4 between On and standby.

    This area disp lays the cur rent time location and

    param eter information.

    2 . Pa g e guid e disp la y

    This area shows in w hich d irection you can m ove

    (using the [CURSOR] keys) to access additional pages.

    3 . Va lue disp la y

    This area shows the value of the param eter being

    edited, or information regarding the page or p rogram.

    4 . ED IT ico n

    This icon will be show n w hen it is possible to use the

    [VALUE] dial to ed it the value of the selected param e-

    ter.

    5 . Free icon

    This icon is shown when th e value disp lay is ind icat-

    ing the remaining space on the card.

    6 . Fx icon

    This icon is shown when the value d isplay is ind icat-ing the nu mber of the currently selected effect and its

    effect chain .

    7 . Song icon

    This icon is shown when the value d isplay is ind icat-

    ing the nu mber of the currently selected song and the

    grad e (recording quality) of that song .

    8 . Le vel meter

    This area ind icates the inp ut/ recording and outp ut/

    p layback level of each track.

    9. Card access icon

    This icon is shown wh en data is being written to or

    read from the Comp actFlash card.

    Never tu rn off the power when the card access icon is dis-

    played . Doing so may d estroy not only the curren tly selected

    song, but also the d ata in the card as well as the card itself.

    1 0 . O riginal value icon

    When the current value of the parameter being edited

    is the same as its stored va lue, the ORIG icon will

    appear.11 . Undo/ Redo icons

    These icons will appear wh en the und o/ redo func-

    tions are available.

    1 2 . [PAN ] knob icon

    These icons indicate the current function of the [PAN]

    knobs.

    1 3 . Record mode icon

    These icons indicate the current recording mod e. Setthe [MODE] knob to REC MODE and u se the

    [VALUE] dial to select the ap pr opr iate recording

    mode.

    INPUT: The inpu t signal will be recorded. This is the

    normal recording mode.

    BOUNCE: In the BOUNCE recording m ode, up to

    three tracks of playback and one external inpu t can be

    boun ced (mixed) dow n to one track; or you can chose

    to have tw o tracks of playback and two external

    inpu ts to be bounced down to two tracks.

    MASTERING: In the MASTERING recording m ode,

    all four tracks of playback can be mixed down onto

    one or tw o of the tracks.

    MP2: In this mode, four tracks of playback will be con-

    verted to a two-track MP2 stereo file (withou t over-

    writing the existing four tracks).

    1 4 . Effect cha in

    This icons in this area ind icate the on/ off status of

    each of the mod ules in an effect chain.

    1 5 . Effect pa ram eters

    These icons will appear to ind icate that ed itable

    parameters exist for the selected effects. Use the [PAN]

    knobs to edit these param eters. The ind icator for the

    param eter currently being ed ited will blink.

    Inser ting or rem oving a ca rdIn order to record on the D4, you w ill need a Compact-

    Flash card (which well refer to simp ly as a card in this

    manual).

    1 . In se r tin g a ca r d

    Insert the card with the label facing up ward. Firmly

    pu sh the card all the way into the card slot.

    Be careful to insert the card in the correct direction.

    2 . Re mo ving a ca r d

    Grasp the ridge located on the und erside of the card ,

    and pu ll it out toward you rself.

    Never insert or remove the card while the pow er is on.Doing so may d amage the card.

    The card may be damaged if you use excessive force when

    inserting or removing it.

    Card s that ca n be used w ith the D4

    The D4 can u se Comp actFlash cards of capacities ranging

    from 16 MB to 2 GB. Never attem pt to use any other type

    of CompactFlash card, since this may cause the D4 to stop

    working.

    Card ha ndling

    Do not bend the card , or subject it to strong ph ysical shock

    or high temp eratures.

    Sw itching the pow er on/ sta ndby

    1 . Prepar ing to turn on the pow er

    Before you connect the pow er sup ply, make sure that th e

    [POWER] switch is set to the STAN DBY position.

    Connecting the AC adapter

    Plug the connector of the includ ed AC ad apter firm ly into

    the [DC 9V] inp ut connector. Then connect the AC adapter

    to an AC power outlet.

    Never u se any AC adap ter other than the included one.

    2 . Turning the pow er on

    Heres the correct w ay to turn on the pow er of the D4 andany other connected d evices.

    1 Lower the [MASTER] fader to 0.

    Also lower the volum e of any connected external

    devices to the minimu m setting.

    2 Turn on the power of any connected external

    devices.

    Turn on th e pow er of external inpu t dev ices such as a

    keyboard that w ill be send ing aud io to the D4.

    3 Turn on the pow er of the D4.

    Turn the [POWER] switch on .

    The song that had been selected w hen the power w as last

    turned off will be selected.

    The start-up screen will app ear in the display.

    If the start-up screen does not appear w hen you tu rn on thepow er, check the following points.

    AC adapter is connected, and CompactFlash card is

    inserted in the correct direction

    such as your audio monitor system.

    Make sure that op erations such as song playback orrecording are completed, and turn off the power by

    reversing the Turn ing the pow er on procedu re from the

    previous page.

    Before you p ower-off, you m ust p ress the [STOP] key to save

    the song to the card.

    Turn the volum e of all connected dev ices to the minimum

    setting, and turn off each p ower switch in order, beginning

    with the last device that receives the audio signal.

    Never tu rn off the power when the card access icon is dis-

    played . Doing so will destroy not only the selected song, but

    may also destroy the songs on the card as w ell as the Com-

    pactFlash itself.

    Listening to the demo songsThe included card contains demo songs. Heres how you

    can listen to these dem o songs.

    1 Connect headphones or a monitor amp to the D4.

    (p.15)

    2 Turn on the power of the D4. (p.17)

    3 Set the [TRACK] fader of the D4 to 7, and the [MAS-TER] fader to 0.

    4 Select the song that you want to play back.

    (p.28: Step 2 2. Selecting a d ifferent song)

    5 Press the [PLAY] key to begin playback.

    6 Slowly raise the [MASTER] fader to adjust the vol-

    ume level.

    If you are using head ph ones, raise the [MASTER]

    fader to about 6, and then u se the [PHON E LEVEL]

    knob to make ad justments.

    7 When the demo song has finished playing, press the

    [STOP] key to stop playback.

    Q uick sta r tIf you just cant w ait to get star ted, th is section w ill explain

    how to connect your guitar, record your playing on one track,

    and then p lay it back.

    1. Preparations

    Insert the cardInsert the card (CompactFlash) into the card slot.

    (p.16)

    The CompactFlash card that came w ith your D4 is

    already formatted and contains the demo songs. How-

    ever, if you are using a new CompactFlash card , you

    will need to format it before you begin record ing.(p.55)

    If you format the CompactFlash card that was includ ed

    with the D4, you w ill lose all the demo data (demo song

    and effect data) that it contained .

    Connect your guitarConnect a shielded cable (mono ph one p lug) to your

    guitar. Connect the other end of the cable to the D4s

    [INPUT1] jack.

    Set the D4s [INPUT1] switch to GTR.

    Connect your hea dp hones

    Connect your head ph ones to the D4s [PHON E] jack.

    Set the [PHONE LEVEL] knob to 0.

    If you w ant to connect an amp or aud io system, refer to

    p.15.

    2 . Turn the pow er on

    Connect the AC adapter

    Connect the includ ed AC ad apter to the [DC 9V] jack.

    Set the [M A STER] fader to 0 Lower the D4s [MASTER] fader.

    Turn the pow er on

    Turn on th e [POWER] switch located on the rear panel

    of the D4, and th e start-up screen will appear in the

    display.

    3 . Create a new songSet the [M O DE] knob to N EW SO N G

    If no songs have been recorded on the card, then

    MakeNew! will appear automatically.

    Specify the song gradeThe display ind icates SngGrade.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select the grade (recording

    quality) of the new song you re going to create.

    Crea te the songPress the CURSOR [ ] key. An empty song named

    NEW SONG has now been created.

    Press the [EXIT] key

    The D4 will be in Play mod e.

    4 . A ssign the input

    Press the TRA CK A SSIG N [1 ] key

    The key w ill light.

    Select the recording trackBy d efault, track 1 is autom atically selected as the

    record ing t rack; the TRACK ASSIGN [1] key and REC

    SELECT [1] LED will light . If you want to select a t rack

    other than track 1 as the recording track, press the

    [PAN] knob correspond ing to that track to select it.

    Set the input level

    Ad just INPUT LEVEL [1] as you watch the LED. Set

    the level as high as possible withou t letting the LED

    light red .

    Set the m onitoring levelGrad ua lly raise the [TRACK 1] fader as you watch the

    level meter [1], and make sure that you are hearing

    sound. Use the [MASTER] fader and [PHON E] knob

    to adjust the monitor volume.

    5. Select an effect

    Press the [G UITA R/ M IC] key

    The guitar/ mic effects will appear.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select aneffect program

    Play your gu itar to hear the sound .

    Edit a n ef fect module

    Press the [PAN] knob for one of the effect m odu les

    within the selected effect chain, and then tu rn th e

    [VALUE] dial to select that effect module. You can

    turn the [PAN] knobs to edit the value of the parame-

    ters in that m odu le.

    Press the [EXIT] keyYou w ill return to Play mod e.

    6 . Record

    A djust the record ing level

    Use the [TRACK 1] fader to ad just the record ing level.

    While you w atch level meter [1], grad ua lly raise the

    fader as far as possible withou t allowing the level to

    reach CLIP. Use the [MASTER] fader and [PHONE]

    knob to adjust the monitor volume.

    A rm the D4 for recording

    Press the [REC] key to put the D4 into record-ready

    mode. The [REC] key will blink.

    Record!

    When you are read y to p erform, p ress the [PLAY] key.

    Recording w ill start, and you may begin p laying your

    instrument. During record ing, the [REC] key and

    [PLAY] key w ill be lit.

    Stop record ing

    When youre finished performing , press the [STOP]

    key. Record ing w ill stop , and the [REC] key and

    [PLAY] key w ill go dark .

    Use the [MASTER] fader to ad just the volume.

    Stop the pla yb a ckTo stop playback, press the [STOP] key. Playback will

    stop , and the [PLAY] key will go dark. To listen again ,

    repeat steps 14.

    Operation

    Step 1. Basic operationThis section explains basic operation of the D4.

    1 . Selecting modes

    The fun ctions of the D4 are organized into eleven mod es

    selected by the [MODE] knob; and four su b-mod es (Effect,

    Effect Write, Tuner, and Punch-Rec) accessed by p ressingto various keys.

    You can access one of the sub-mod es from any m ode sim-

    ply by p ressing the correspond ing key. If a sub-mod e is

    selected, you can press the [EXIT] key to retu rn to the

    mod e cur rently selected by the [MODE] knob.

    Play modeThis is the default mode that the D4 will enter w hen youfirst turn the pow er on. Here you can play back and

    record a song. The d isplay shows a coun ter.

    M odes selected by the [M O DE] knob

    Turn the [MODE] knob to select a mode. If you turn the

    [MODE] knob while a sub-mode is selected, The D4 will

    enter the new ly selected m ode after you exit the sub-mode.

    REC MOD E (Record Mode)

    This mode is used to specify the record ing mode (e.g.,

    boun ce or stereo MP2 conversion).

    SYSTEM

    This mode is used to make basic settings for the recorder.

    TRK EDIT (Track Edit)This mod e is used to perform track editing operations

    such as Copy or Erase.

    V-TRK (Virtual Track)

    This mode is used to select virtu al tracks.

    RHYTHM

    This mode is used to sp ecify the tempo and to select

    rhythm and metronome patterns.

    LOCATE

    In this mode, you can move to a d ifferent time location within

    the song.

    SON G SEL (Song Select)

    Use this mode wh en you wan t to select a different song.

    SONG EDIT

    This mod e is used to perform song editing operations

    such as Name, Copy, and Delete.

    NEW SONG

    Use this mode w hen you w ant to create a new song.

    CARD

    This mod e is used to perform card -related operations.USB

    This mode is used to exchange d ata with you r compu ter

    via USB.

    Sub-modes

    Effect

    Press the FX [GUITAR/ MIC], [INSERT/ GTR+VO], [MAS-TER], or [FINAL] key to en ter th e Effect sub-mode in

    order to select or ed it effects. The key that you selected

    will be lit, and this will determ ine the location at w hich

    the effect is inserted and the effect types that are available.

    Write

    Press the FX WRITE [KNOB] key or th e [PROG] key to

    access the Write sub-mod e. The [KNOB] key lets you regis-ter the selected effect to the Favorites knob. The [PROG] key

    lets you renam e an effect and write it into the D4s internal

    memory.

    Tuner

    Press the TRACK ASSIGN [1] key and [2] key simu lta-

    neously to access the Tun er sub-mode. Next, use the

    TRACK ASSIGN [1] key or [2] key to select the inp ut

    ([INPUT 1] or [INPUT 2]) signal that you want to send to

    the tun er.

    Punch Rec

    Press the [PUNCH ] key to select the Pu nch Rec sub-mode

    if you w ant to u se auto-pu nch recording. Auto-pu nch

    record ing will occur from the time location specified bythe [IN (LOC1)] key to the time location sp ecified by the

    [OUT (LOC2)] key.

    2 . Selecting a nd editing pa ram eters

    Selecting a parameterAfter youve selected a mode using th e [MODE] knob, use

    the [CURSOR] keys to move to th e page containing the

    param eter that you w ish to edit.

    The page guide indication shows whether m ore pages

    exist in each d irection. To move to another p age, press the

    [CURSOR] key for that direction.

    Editing a pa ram eterIf the d isplayed p age contains a param eter whose value

    you can ed it, the value display w ill blink and the edit icon

    will appear. Turn the [VALUE] dial to ed it the p aram eter.

    Using the [PA N ] knobs to select/ edit par a meters

    The [PAN] knobs can be used to ed it the value of certain

    parameters.

    Use the [SEL] key to switch th e function of th e [PAN]

    knobs. An icon in the d isplay ind icates the param eter that

    can currently be edited.

    AMP/FX: If you press the FX [GUITAR+MIC], [INSERT/

    GTR+VO], [MASTER], or [FINAL] key, the [PAN] knobs

    will edit effect parameters 15.

    SEND: If you press the [SEL] key to select SEND (and the

    [MASTER] key is lit), the [PAN] knobs w ill control the

    master sends and return.

    If you u se the [PAN] knobs to edit parameter s in this way,

    the p hysical position of the [PAN] knobs will no longer

    match the actual panning of each track.

    Canceling a n edit (Undo/ Redo)After p erforming a track editing operation, you can u se

    the Und o function to return to th e condition pr ior to exe-

    cuting the edit. If the undo icon is shown, you can

    press the [UNDO] key to execute the Undo function. After

    undoing, the Redo icon will light, and you can use

    the same operation to Redo the edit, returning to th e con-

    dition pr ior to executing Un do.The Und o/ Redo function also provides a convenient way

    to comp are the original version to the edited version,

    allowing you to be sure the edit d elivered the result that

    you wanted.

    In order to u se this function, the System mode Un doSys

    page setting AutoUnd o must be turned On. (p.57)

    Undo is maintained until the next time you record or p er-

    form a track editing op eration.

    3 . Tuning

    The D4 has a bu ilt-in tuner fun ction. This lets you tune aninstrument that is connected to the [INPUT 1] or [INPUT

    2] jack, or tune an instrum ent using the internal mic.

    Tuning your guitar

    1 Connect your guitar to the [INPUT 1] jack.

    Set the [INPUT 1] switch to GTR.

    2 Enter Tuner mode.

    Press the TRACK ASSIGN [1] key and [2] key simu lta-

    neously.

    3 Verify the input.

    The [INPUT 1] LED w ill blink.

    If the input level is too low, ad just the IN PUT LEVEL [1]

    knob.

    4 Tune your instrument.

    Make sure that you r gu itar is connected to the

    [INPUT 1] jack, and play a string on your gu itar. The

    character d isplay area of the screen will function as a

    tun ing meter, and w ill display the note name.

    Tune the string wh ile watching the amount of tuning

    difference (d isplayed in u nits of cents) and the m eter

    in the d isplay.

    The reference pitch frequency is A=440 Hz.

    When the tuning is correct

    If you do not wan t the sound to be heard wh ile tuning, set

    the [MASTER] fader to 0.

    5 Exit Tuner mode.Press the [EXIT] key to exit Tuner mode.

    Tuning your acoustic guitar

    Heres how you can u se the D4s internal mic to tune you r

    acoustic guitar.

    1 Select the internal mic.

    Set the [INPUT 2] switch to (MIC) INT.

    2 Enter Tuner mode.

    Press the TRACK ASSIGN [1] key and [2] key simu lta-

    neously.

    3 Select the input.

    Press the TRACK ASSIGN [2] key. The [INPUT 2] jack

    will be selected , and its LED w ill blink.

    If the input level is too low, adjust th e INPUT LEVEL [2]knob.

    4 Tune your instrument.

    5 Exit Tuner mode.

    Press the [EXIT] key to exit Tuner mode.

    Step 2 . Crea ting/ selecting a song1 . Creat ing a new song

    Before you can begin recording, you m ust create a new

    blank song.

    1 Set the [MODE] knob to NEW SONG.

    2 Select the song grade.The display w ill ind icate SngGrade.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select the song grade (record-

    ing quality) thats appropriate for the desired record-

    ing quality and/ or time.

    The song grade that you select here cannot be changed after

    the song is created.

    3 Create the song.

    After youve used the [VALUE] dial to select the song

    grade, press the CURSOR [ ] key. A song named

    NEW SON G will be created following the h ighest

    existing song number.

    If you d ecide not to create a n ew song, p ress the [EXIT] key.

    2 . Selecting a different song

    To select the previous-numbered songHold d own the [STOP] key and press the [REW] key

    to move to the beginning of the next lower-numbered

    song.

    To select the nex t-num ber ed song

    Hold d own the [STOP] key and press the [FF] key to

    move to the beginning of the next higher-numbered

    song.

    To select a song directly by name or number

    1 Set the [MODE] knob to SONG SEL.

    The name and number of the currently selected song

    is displayed.

    2 Use the [VALUE] dial to di splay the des ired song

    name and number.

    3 Press the CURSOR [ ] key to select the song.

    When you switch songs, each track w ill be at the volume

    level at which the faders were wh en you sw itched songs.

    Depend ing on the state of the faders, the playback volum e

    might be excessive, so please use caution.

    Eco(Economy) Extended-length recording. Select thiswhen you want to record for an extended

    time.

    Std(Standard) Standard. Normally you will select thisgrade.

    Hiq(High Quality) High audio quality. Select this when youwant to record at a high audio quality. Theavailable recording time will be shorter.

    3 . Changing the na me of a song

    The default name for any newly created song w ill beNEW SONG. So that you will be able to tell your songs

    apart, we recomm end that you change the song nam e. A

    song name of up to 16 characters can be assigned .

    1 Select the song whose name you want to change.

    2. Selecting a different song

    2 Set the [MODE] knob to SONG EDIT.

    3 Use the [VALUE] dial to select NameSong.

    The character youre editing w ill blink.

    5 Use the [VALUE] dial to edit the song name.

    The character will change as you turn th e [VALUE]

    dial. To move to a different character to change, pr essthe CURSOR [ ]/ [ ] keys.

    6 When you are finished entering the name, press the

    [STORE] key.

    The d isplay w ill ask Nam eOK?, Use the [VALUE]

    dial to select Yes, and then press the CURSOR [ ]

    key. If you select No, the previous nam e will reap-

    pear.

    Step 3. Recording1 . Recording methods

    This section explains the d ifferent record ing method s

    available on the D4.

    For basic recording, refer to Quick Start.

    Recording o n tw o tracksHeres how to record on tw o tracks simu ltaneously.

    1 Connect the input device.

    Lower the D4s [MASTER] fader, set the [INPUT 1]

    and [INPUT 2] switches both to LINE, and connect

    your keyboard etc. to the [INPUT 1] and [INPUT 2]

    jacks.

    2 Specify the two tracks on which you want to record.

    Press th e TRACK ASSIGN [1] key; the key w ill light.

    Press one of the [PAN ] knobs to select a tr ack for

    recording. Using th e same p rocedure, p ress the TRACK

    ASSIGN [2] key an d select another record ing track.

    3 Stop playback.Press the [STOP] key. The key will go dark.

    Double-speed playba ck

    During p layback, you can p ress and hold th e [FF] key to

    to use locate points, and h ow to select a different time

    location within a song.

    1 . Changing the form a t of the counter displayThe counter d isplay format shown in Play mode can be

    switched accord ing to you r needs. You can sw itch

    between the following tw o time d isplay formats.

    minutes: seconds .

    1/ 1000 second

    measures . beats . 1/ 96 beat

    Set the [MODE] knob to Locate (Locate mod e), and tu rn

    the [VALUE] dial to change the d isplay format. (p.62)

    2 . Changing the current time loca tion

    1 Set the counter display blinking.

    In the Locate or Play mod e, when the coun ter is dis-played, pressing the CURSOR [ ] key will make the

    counter d isplay begin to blink.

    2 Use the [VALUE] dial to change the time location.

    Now turn the [VALUE] dial to change the location. To

    move the cursor between the various un its of change,use the CURSOR [ ]/ [ ] keys. Mov ing toward the

    right w ill switch to a new screen that will allow you to

    move in smaller un its.

    If LocMoni (p.57) is turn ed On, you w ill be able to lis-

    ten to the sound as you change the time location. This can be

    useful for setting locate points w ith greater accuracy.

    3 Return to the normal Play mode.

    When you press the [EXIT] key, you w ill return to the

    initial counter m ode. To move from the midd le of the

    song to the beginn ing, press the [REW] key.

    3 . Using loca te points to cha nge the time loca tion

    You can register a specific time location as a locate p ointand then m ove instantly to the registered time location

    wh enever you w ant. The times you r egister are also used

    for auto pu nch-in/ out recording and for track editing.

    You can use locate points to m ove even w hile the song is

    playing.

    Registering the IN a nd O UT loca te points1 Move to the time location that you w ant to register.

    2 Press the [STORE] key.

    The key w ill light.

    3 Press the key ([IN (LOC1)] or [OUT (LOC2)]) that

    you want to register to this time location.

    The time w ill be registered to that key. The registered

    time will be displayed briefly, and the [STORE] key

    will go dark.

    You can p erform steps23 even du ring playback.

    If you want to save the registered locate points as part of the

    song d ata, press the [STOP] key to save the song. If you tu rn

    off the pow er w ithout saving the song, the locate points you

    registered w ill not be preserved.

    M oving to the IN or O UT points you reg istered

    Press the [IN (LOC1)] key or [OUT (LOC2)] key. You will

    move to that time location.

    Setting the InTime and OutTimeTo specify the InTime an d Ou tTime locations used for

    track editing operat ions, you can simp ly register the

    desired t ime to each key as described in Registering the

    IN and OUT locate points.

    If you w ant to sp ecify InTime and OutTime locations that

    are independ ent of the IN an d OUT settings, pr ess the lit

    [IN] or [OUT] key while youre in the track editing opera-tion; the display w ill change to the time of that locate

    point. Then, in the same w ay as when m oving the cur rent

    time loca tion , use the CURSOR [ ]/ [ ] keys to make

    the desired coun ter value blink, and turn the [VALUE]

    dial to specify the t ime.

    By p ressing the [PLAY] key at this time, you can hear

    app roximately two seconds of playback starting at theselected time location.

    The mod ified time you sp ecify here will not be reflected by

    the locate point.

    If you want to change the To Time or End Time for track ed it-

    ing operations, press the [PUNCH] key w hen setting the

    parameter.

    Step 6. Mixer adjustmentsBy using the m ixer to adjust the volume, tone, and pan -

    ning for inpu t/ recording or p layback of each track, you

    can create the most effective overall sound .

    1 . Select a m ixer para meter

    Adjusting the level (volume), and pan (stereo position)Use the [TRACK 1][TRACK 4] and [MASTER] faders to

    ad just th e levels. Use the [PAN] knobs to ad just th e pan .

    While the recorder is stopped and the counter is dis-

    played , moving a knob w ill cause its value to briefly

    appear.

    If the card d oes not contain an effect user file (1.EFF), data

    stored in the D4 itself (the d efault settings) will be loaded.

    Simp ly exchanging card s will not change the contents of the

    effects.

    To save an effect user file

    1 Select CARD mode.

    Use the [MODE] knob to select CARD mode.

    2 Select CdFxSave

    Use the [VALUE] d ial to select Cd FxSave, and p ressthe CURSOR [ ] key.

    3 Select the number where you want the user effect

    file to be saved.

    The disp lay ind icates Save N um . Use the [VALUE]

    dial to select the file nu mber (1 or 2).

    4 Save the file.

    Press the CURSOR [ ] key; the display will indicate

    Sure? Use the [VALUE] dial to select Yes, and

    then press the CURSOR [ ] key once again. If you

    select No, the file w ill not be saved .

    To loa d a n ef fect user fi le

    1 Select CARD mode.

    Use the [MODE] knob to select CARD mode.2 Select CdFxSave

    Use the [VALUE] d ial to select CdFxLoad, and press

    the CURSOR [ ] key.

    3 Select the number of the effect user file that you

    want to load.

    The display indicates Load Num . Use the [VALUE]

    dial to select the file nu mber (1 or 2).

    4 Load the file.

    Press the CURSOR [ ] key. The display will ask

    Sure? Use the [VALUE] dial to select Yes andpress the CURSOR [ ] key once again. If you select

    No, the file will not be loaded.

    Initializing the effect user area

    If you select Int in step 3 of To load an effect user file,

    the same data as the preset data will be loaded into the

    user area, initializing these settings.

    The settings of the Favorite knob will return to their factory-

    set state.

    This will overw rite the D4s interna l user area, so if you want

    to save the curren t contents of the user area, youll need to

    perform the p rocedure described in To save an effect user

    file before you restore the factory settings.

    Step 8 . Rhythm & tem po settingsThis section explains how to use the rh ythm and metro-nome p atterns, how to select a time signature, and how to

    adjust th e songs tempo setting.

    If you change th e tempo after recording, the m easures and

    beats disp layed in the location coun ter will no longer m atch

    the audio in the track. The temp o only controls the playback

    speed of the rhythm patterns, and does not affect the play-

    back speed of the recorded tracks.

    1 . Pla ying rhythm a nd metronome pa tterns

    The D4 contains 87 various rhythm p atterns, ranging from

    simp le metronom e patterns to more complex drum s

    ph rases designed for a particular style of mu sic (p.91).When you have an idea for a song and w ant to begin

    recording, you can play along with the internal rhythm

    patterns as a guide.

    Selecting and playing a rhythm pattern

    1 Select RHYTHM mode.

    Set the [MODE] knob to RHYTHM. The nam e of the

    currently selected rhythm pattern will be displayed.

    2 Select a rhythm pattern.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select the desired rhyth m pat-

    tern. If you select Off, the rhy thm will be off. The

    Rhythm pattern list in the ap pend ix lists the avail-

    able rhythm patterns.

    The rhythm p atterns that can be selected w ill depend on thetime signature setting.

    If the [PAN] knob icon PAN is disp layed, you can also turn

    the rhythm pattern on / off by pressing the [RHYTHM] knob.

    3 Adjust the tempo.Press the CURSOR [ ] key until the display indicate

    Tempo.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to ad just the tempo of the song.

    4 Specify the time signature.

    Press the CURSOR [ ] key until the display indicate

    Beat. Use the [VALUE] dial to specify the time sig-

    natu re of the song.

    Changing the time signature will also change the rhythm

    you selected in step 2.

    To store the specified time signature and tempo in the song,

    press the [STOP] key to save the song. If you turn off the

    power without saving the song, the time signature and

    tempo you specified w ill be discarded . (p.17)

    5 Adjust the volume of the rhythm.

    Press the CURSOR [ ] key until the display indicate

    RhythmLv. Use the [VALUE] dial to adjust the vol-

    ume.

    If the [PAN] knob icon PAN is displayed , you can also use

    the [RHYTHM] knob to adjust the rhythm volume.

    Recording w hile listening to a rhythm pa ttern

    You can record your p erforman ce while using the internal

    rhythm as a guide.

    1 Select a rhythm pattern.

    Refer to Selecting and playing a rhythm pa ttern .

    Make sure that a rhythm pattern is selected, and th at

    the rhythm is not turn ed off.

    2 Adjust the recording leve l of the input source, and

    record.

    Refer to 1. Record ing m ethod s.

    When you press the [REC] key and enter record-ready

    mod e, the selected rhythm pattern will begin playing.

    When you press the [PLAY] key to start record ing, the

    selected rh ythm pattern will start again in sync with

    the beginning of the song. Play your instrum ent along

    to the rhythm.

    Changing the tempo of the rhythm

    Each rhythm pattern has a temp o setting stored for it.

    To change the temp o, select the r hythm pattern, and then

    edit TEMPO to set the temp o, as described in 3. Adjust

    the temp o in the p revious section.

    Step 9 . Song editingThe D4 prov ides the following ed iting operations formanaging songs:

    1 . Song editing operations

    Song N ame naming a song

    This operation changes the name of the curr ently selected

    song.

    For the procedure, refer to 3. Changing the name of a

    song in Step 2. Creating/ selecting a song.

    Song Copy copying a song

    This operation creates a copy of the cur rently selected

    song in a new location.

    Heres how to copy song 1 to song 2.

    1 Select the song (song 1) that you want to copy.

    2 Select SONG EDIT mode.Set the [MODE] knob to SONG EDIT.

    3 Select the Copy operation.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select CopySong, and pr ess

    the CURSOR [ ] key; the Copy Song page appears in

    the d isplay.

    4 Select the copy destination song number (Dest-

    Song).

    Turn the [VALUE] dial to select song 2, and pressthe CURSOR [ ] key.

    5 Execute the Copy operation.

    The display will ask Copy OK? When you p ress the

    CURSOR [ ] key, the copy operation will be exe-

    cuted.

    When the data h as been copied, the display will ind i-

    cate Finish! After a time, you will retu rn to step 4.

    When you execute the Copy op eration, the existing songs

    beginning w ith song 2 and any subsequent songs will be renum-

    bered by on e nu mber h igher; song 3 will become song 4, etc.

    Delete Song deleting a song

    This operation d eletes the currently selected song.

    Heres how to delete song 1.1 Select the song (song 1) that you want to delete.

    2 Select SONG EDIT mode.

    Set the [MODE] knob to SONG EDIT.

    3 Select the Delete operation.

    Use the [VALUE] d ial to select DelSong, and press

    the CURSOR [ ] key; the Delete Song page appears.

    4 Confirm the song number (DestSong) that will be

    deleted.

    Make sure that 1 is selected as the song num ber, and

    press the CURSOR [ ] key.

    5 Execute the Delete operation.

    The disp lay will ask Del OK? If you p ress the CUR-

    SOR [ ] key, the display will ask Sure ?, and whenuse the [VALUE] d ial to select Yes and press the

    CURSOR [ ] key, the song will be deleted. When the

    Delete opera tion is comp leted, the display w ill ind i-

    cate Finish!

    When you execute the Delete operation, the remaining songs

    will be renumbered by one nu mber lower; song 4 will

    become song 3 etc.

    Step 10. Track editingThe D4 provides the following track editing operations:Copy Track: copies a portion a track (or the en tire track)

    Insert: inserts blank space into a track

    Erase: erases the d ata from a specific area of a track

    Delete: removes a specific area of a track

    If an error message is displayed du ring track editing, make a

    note of the content of the error message. Then p ress the

    [EXIT] key to return to the previous page, and try the ed iting

    Copy Tra ck copy ing a tra ck

    This operation copies the specified range (InOut) of a

    recorded track to another time location (To).

    As an examp le, heres how the InOut range of track 1 can

    be copied th ree times to the To location of track 2.

    1 Store the In and Out time locations in the [IN

    (LOC1)] key and [OUT (LOC2)] key.

    Change the current time location to th e point that youwant to register, press the [STORE] key, and then press

    the ap propr iate location key. For details, refer to 3.

    and OUT points in Step 5. Viewing and changing

    the time.

    2 Select TRK EDIT mode.

    Set th e [MODE] knob to TRK EDIT.

    3 Select the Copy operation.

    4 Select CopyFrom (copy-source track number).

    This operation erases any recorded information from the

    specified region (InOut) of a recorded track. When you erase

    select 1. Then press the CURSOR [ ] key.

    5 Specify the InTime (In time location) and OutTime.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to m ake you r selections (see CopyTrack). Then press the CURSOR [ ] key. To use the

    time locations you specified in Step 1, select LOC 1 (IN)

    as the In time and LOC 2 (OUT) as the Out time.

    You can p ress the [IN (LOC1)] or [OUT (LOC2)] key at th is

    point to m odify the selected time. You can also press the

    [PLAY] key to aud ition the playback for ap proximately tw o

    seconds starting a t the selected time. Modifying the time

    Step 11 . M ixdow nMixdow n refers to the process of using th e faders and

    effects to ad just th e sound recorded on each track, and

    recording the resulting d ata on a tw o-channel recorder

    (DAT recorder, MD recorder, cassette tap e record er, etc.) to

    create a finished song.

    1 . Recording onto a ma ster recorder1 Check the completed song.

    Adjust th e level and pan etc. of each track, and play

    back to check the song.

    2 Connect your external recording device.

    Connect the [MASTER OUT] jack of the D4 to you r

    tape recorder or MD recorder, etc.3 Begin mixdown.

    Start recording on your external recording d evice, and

    play back your song on th e D4.

    2 . Using the sub input

    If you w ant to p erform along with the playback of the fourtracks, you can use the external input as a sub inpu t that is

    add ed d irectly to the master outpu t.

    1 Connect your external input device to the input jack.

    2 Select the sub input setting.

    Set the [MODE] knob to SYSTEM. Use th e [VALUE]

    dial to select MixerSys, and press the CURSOR [ ]

    key to access the mixer settings. Press the CURSOR[ ] key until the display read SubIn (sub input set-

    3 . Creating a stereo M P2 file

    When you have finished recording, a comp leted song can

    be converted into a stereo MP2 song file that can be

    played on you r compu ter. An MP2 song that you have

    created this way can be played back on the D4, but th ereare several limitations on how it can be edited .

    You wont be able to u se the [MODE] knob to select REC

    MODE, SYSTEM, TRK EDIT, V-TRK, or

    Creating a stereo MP2 file

    Heres how the au dio recorded on tracks 14 can be con-

    verted into a stereo MP2 file.

    1 Select REC MODE mode.Set the [MODE] knob to REC MODE.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select CnvrtMP2 (MP2 con-

    version).

    Press the [EXIT] key to retu rn to Play m ode.

    2 Arm the recording tracks.

    Press the [PAN] knobs for the tracks (1 and 2) where

    you want to record . The REC SELECT LEDs will light .

    3 Adjust the panning of the playback tracks.

    Press the [PLAY] key to p lay back, and ad just the ste-

    reo position of each track (14).4 Adjust the playback and recording leve ls.

    Use the track faders to ad just th e playback levels of

    each track. Use the master fader to adjust the record-

    ing level.

    5 Move the current time location to the beginning of

    the song.

    6 Begin recording.

    Press the [REC] key to put the D4 in record-ready

    mode. Press the [PLAY] key to begin recording.

    The rhythm will also be recorded a t this time. If you dont

    need the rhythm , press the [RHYTHM] knob to turn the

    rhythm Off.

    7 When youre finished recording, press the [STOP] key.8 A new song w ill be created.

    There are some limitations on how the completed stereo file

    can be edited.

    Step 1 2 . Sa ving to your com puterWhen a recording or editing operation is comp leted, the

    D4 au tomatically writes the data into the card . Song data

    saved on the card can be sent to your comp uter and saved

    (backed up).

    If there is only a little space remaining on th e card , or if youve

    finished creating a song, you should save your d ata on a mediumother than the card, such as the hard disk of your compu ter.

    Before using a Com pactFlash card, the card m ust be format-

    ted by the D4 itself. Cards formatted on a compu ter or d igital

    camera etc. will not be recognized by the D4.

    1 . M a king USB connections to your com puter

    The D4 has a [USB] conn ector for d irect connection to

    your computer, making it quick and easy to back up your

    importan t song data.

    The procedure will differ according to the operating sys-tem of your compu ter.

    W indow s users

    Sup ported versions: Wind ows Me/ 2000 or later

    1 Connect the D 4 to your computer.

    Connect a USB cable to the [USB] jack of the D4. Con-

    nect the other end to your compu ter system. Make

    sure that the connector is oriented correctly, and insert

    it all the way into the jack.

    2 Display the USB communications page.

    Set the [MODE] knob to USB.

    When the Ready? display ap pears, select Yes and

    press the CURSOR [ ] key. The display will indicate

    CrdReady.

    3 A drive named Removable D isk wil l be added to

    your computer.

    If you are connecting the D4 for the first time, the

    device dr iver will be installed n ow.

    4 Back up the data to your computer.When you open the removable disk d rive that was

    add ed in step 3, you will see the contents of the Card

    that is inserted in the D4. Copy th e desired song/ effect

    data into your compu ter. Song d ata from you r compu ter

    can also be written to the Card.

    5 Turn off the USB connection.

    Left-click the card icon d isplayed in the righ t side ofyour computer s taskbar. In the m enu that app ears,

    left-click Stop USB disk d river (drive n ame). Make

    sure that a message ind icating that the USB disk may

    be disconnected safely is d isplayed. Make sure that

    the d isplay has changed from CardLock to

    CrdReady, and press the CURSOR [ ] key. When

    the disp lay ind icates Complete, select Yes andpress the CURSOR [ ] key. After returning to Locate

    mode, d isconnect the USB cable from the D4.

    M a cintosh users

    Supported versions: Mac OS 9.0.4 or later

    1 Connect the D4 to your computer.

    Connect a USB cable to th e [USB] jack of the D4. Con-nect the other end to your compu ter system. Make

    comp uter. Song d ata from your computer can also be

    wr itten to the card.

    5 Put the added drive into Trash.If you w ant to d isconnect the D4, either drag the dr ive

    from th e desktop in to the Trash, or select Exit

    from the Special menu .

    Make sure that the d isplay has changed from Card-

    Lock to CdN otRdy, and press the CURSOR [ ] key.

    When the disp lay ind icates Complete, select Yes

    and press the CURSOR [ ] key. When you return toLocate mod e, disconnect the USB cable from the D4.

    2 . Sa ving song files via ca rd

    Even if your computer does not have a USB connector,

    you can u se a commercially available card reader to back

    up the data from the card.

    1 Turn off the pow er of the D4, and remove the card.

    2 Insert the card as described in the manual of yourcard reader.

    3 Back up the data onto your computer.

    If da ta is copied to a card of a different size than the card on

    wh ich the song w as created, the Undo d ata may be lost.

    Contents of the ca rd

    The root directory of the card m ay contain the followingfiles and folders.

    1 . So ng fo ld ers

    The D4 manages each song as a separate folder. As a

    ru le, the folder nam e will be the same as the song

    nam e, but if you create identically-named songs, the

    folder nam e will consist of the song name p lus a tilde

    (~) and numeral; e.g., ~1, ~2.

    The folder w ill contain the au dio d ata files for each

    track, and a song management file.

    When copying a song from a card to you r compu ter, or when

    writing a p reviously-copied song back to the card, you mu st

    copy the entire folder.

    If you m odify or delete part of the files in a folder, it will no

    longer be possible to handle the song correctly.

    If you chan ge the nam e of a folder, the new folder name will

    be the song name. Although it is possible to use a tilde (~) in

    the file name, the tilde an d subsequent characters will not be

    displayed in the song name.

    If you are using a sound card that does not supp ort a 32 kHzsampling rate, playback may not be p ossible.

    3 . Effect user file (1.EFF, 2 .EFF)

    These files are created w hen you create or save user

    effect data. The filenames are 1.EFF and 2.EFF.

    4 . Se tting file (D4 . IN I)

    A file containing settings is created with a nam e ofD4.INI. This file contains th e nu mber of the song

    that is currently being ed ited on this card.

    The presence or absence of this file will not affect the op eration

    of the D4. If this file does n ot exist, the first son g will be used .

    5 . Card Recovery result (CDRECVRY.LO G ) a nd Forma t

    result (FO RM AT.LO G )

    When you execute the Card Recovery (p.55) or For-

    mat (p.55) operation, a file containing the resu lt of

    the operation will be created.

    The opera tion of the D4 is not affected by the p resence or

    absence of these files.

    3 . Ca r d ma n a gem ent If the available capacity of the card decreases or if the data

    on the card becomes damaged, you can recover the

    card. If recovery is unsuccessful or if you are u sing a new

    card, you can format the card .

    Recovering a da ma ged card: Card Recovery

    1 Select CARD mode.Set the [MODE] knob to CARD.

    2 Select the Card Recovery operation.

    Use the [VALUE] d ial to select Cd Recvry, and press

    the CURSOR [ ] key.3 Execute the Card Recovery operation.

    When the disp lay asks Ready?, select Yes and

    press the CURSOR [ ] key.

    Formatting a card: Format

    When you format a card, all the contents of that card will be

    erased.

    1 Select CARD mode.

    Set the [MODE] knob to CARD.

    2 Select the Format operation.

    Use the [VALUE] dial to select Cd Format, and pr ess

    the CURSOR [ ] key.

    3 Select the format type.

    When the disp lay asks FmtType?, use th e [VALUE]

    dial to select the format typ e. Normally you shou ld

    select Std.

    Select Full if you are u sing the card with the D4 for

    the first time, or if the card has been p rodu cing errors.

    Formatting a card w ith the Full setting w ill take more

    time.

    4 Execute the Format operation.

    When the d isplay asks Sure?, select Yes and press

    the CURSOR [ ] key. The card will be formatted.

    This section explains the param eters that appear in the dis-

    play for each m ode you select u sing the Mode kn ob.

    REC M O DESelect the record ing m ode

    Here you can select the record ing m od e. The m ixer settings

    will chan ge according to the m ode you select, allowingyou to execute th e desired type of recording . An icon in the

    d isplay indicates the recording mode you selected h ere.

    Input: input recording

    This recording m ode lets you perform conventional

    recording.

    The external inp ut(s) assigned to th e track(s) record -

    enabled by REC SELECT will be recorded.

    Bounce: boun ce re cord ing

    With th is record ing mode, the p layback of the tracks you

    specify (together with an external aud io inp ut sou rce) can

    be recorded on one or tw o other tracks that are record-

    enabled by REC SELECT.

    For example, you m ight inpu t your performance on track1 while listening to the p layback of tracks 2, 3, and 4, and

    record all of these sounds together on track 1. Alterna-

    tively, you could input you r performan ce on tracks 1 and

    2 while listening to the p layback of tracks 3 and 4, and

    record all of these sounds together on tracks 1 and 2.

    M a stering: ma stering recording

    In this recording m ode, the p layback of the tracks will be

    mixed d own to the track(s) that are record-enabled byREC SELECT.

    If youre using all four tracks, use Mastering to combine

    these into tw o tracks or one track. You can also use Mas-

    tering to ap ply a m aster effect or final effect to tw o

    already-recorded tracks, and re-record the result onto two

    other tracks.

    CnvrtM P2: stereo M P2 song recordingThis recording mode converts a completed song into a ste-

    reo MP2 song.

    If you conver t a song into a stereo MP2 song, you w ill be

    able to send it to your computer and play it back using an

    application th at is able to play MPEG1 Layer 2 files. When

    you execute MP2 record ing, a playback-only stereo MP2

    song w ill be newly created ; the existing song will not be

    overw ritten. The mixer will operate in the same w ay as for

    Mastering recording.

    When you sw itch the recording m ode, the TRACK ASSIGN,

    REC SELECT, and effect assignments will be turned off.

    V-Track

    Here you can select the virtu al track for each track. Each

    track has eight virtual t racks: AH. Select one of these

    virtual tracks for recording/ playback on each track.

    Track ed iting operations other than CpyVTrk, DelVTrk

    will affect the virtual track you select here. Other virtu altracks will not be affected by your ed iting operations.

    If you select a virtual track that alread y contains recorded

    data, a O symbol is shown beside AH. Tracks that are

    not yet recorded have an - indication.

    and use the counter to change the current time location.

    In LOCATE mod e, turning the [VALUE] dial w ill

    change the counter d isplay format. When you pr ess theCURSOR [ ] key, the counter display will blink, and you

    can use the [VALUE] dial to move the time location. Use

    the CURSOR [ ]/ [ ] keys to select the un its of move-

    ment.

    (MSM) The current t ime location is

    shown as the absolute time from the beginning of the

    song. From the left, the d isplay units are Minutes:Sec-ond s.Millisecond s (1/ 1000th of a second ).

    (MBT) The current t ime location is

    shown as the num ber of measures from the beginning of

    the song. Use RHYTHM m ode to sp ecify the time signa-

    ture and tempo. From the left, the display units are Mea-

    sure.Beat.Tick (1/ 96th of a beat).

    SO N G SEL: Song select

    Here you can select any song by name and / or num ber.

    Another w ay to select the next-num bered song is to hold

    dow n the [STOP] key and press the [FF] key while playback

    is stopped . Similarly, to select the prev ious-num bered song,

    hold d own the [STOP] key and press the [REW] key while

    playback is stopped at the beginning of the song (00:00.00).

    These fun ctions are available regardless of wh ether you are

    in SONG SEL mod e.
