5th Street Pedestrian Bridge ApprovedTh e Village of Kaslo has granted approval to proceed

with construction of a second pedestrian bridge spanning the Kaslo River. Th e 5th Street bridge will connect the river loop trail and provide safe walking and wheelchair access to downtown from the south side of Kaslo. A pro-posed arched glue-lam beam bridge single span will be located where 5th Street crosses the river. Final engineer-ing and construction plans are underway, and it is hoped that construction will begin this autumn. Th e bridge will be approximately 125 ft long, 6 ft wide with a 3 ft arch. Th e span will rise 23 feet above the river bed.

Securing fi nances for the project began three years ago and sponsors for the glue-lam beams are being sought. Th e KTS has raised approximately $100,000 to date, in-cluding donations and projected grants. Th e Trailblazers would like this to be a UNITY bridge with bridge plaques from all over the world. Bridge plaque sponsors are en-couraged to include their location on their plaque mes-sage. 1.5 inch x 4 inch plaques for $150 will be engraved with up to 4 lines or 70 to 80 characters. Please visit the KTS website www.kaslotrailblazers.org to read About Bridge Sponsorship (pdf) for more information.

Donations towards the Unity bridge of any amount are gratefully accepted. You can donate online at Canada Helps or please send a cheque to Box 1024, Kaslo, BC, V0G 1M0. All gift s of $20 or more, including bench and bridge plaque donations, will receive a Canadian tax receipt.

Please consider joining the Kaslo Trailblazers for $10 for a year, $45 for 5 years, and $90 for a 10 year membership. Also most welcome are picnic table and bench sponsorships.

I have, for 10 years, kept the date of our 2 HOUR SALE top secret...but this year is different.

And I’ll explain why!!

TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS, PAST, PRESENT & POTENTIAL:

A sale, like any type of event eventually runs its course. So this year, on the 10th anniversary of our 2 HOUR SALE I wish to announce that this will be our 10th and FINAL 2 HOUR SALE...and that is what makes it different. I want to give all of you ample notice that our 10th and FINAL 2 HOUR SALE will be held on

Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm.

I will make sure that this 10th and FINAL 2 HOUR SALE is something extra exciting in the way of product offered and prices discounted. I will personally take great pleasure in ensuring that each and every item in our 35,000 square foot showroom – whether it is low priced, medium priced, or higher end – is substantially discounted. It will most defi nitely be worth waiting for. It will most defi nitely be worth attending.

It will be our biggest and best 2 HOUR SALE ever. I GUARANTEE THAT!

Workshop To Enhance Listening Experience

If music transcends language, then there should be no need to speak at author Lorraine Kneier’s music appre-ciation workshop at the Nelson Library. But for many of us, language can help to enhance our understanding of music, so that we can listen a little better.

Th is free workshop, made possible through the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Fund, connects us with the language of music on Sunday, September 30 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Nelson Public Library. No registration is required.

Based on Kneier’s 2008 book Music: A Window to the Soul – Experiencing Clas-sical Music through In-formed Listening, the workshop promises to enhance the listen-ing experience for our ears and hearts.

.Kneier brings with her a lifelong interest in music and experi-ence as a music teach-er, educational admin-istrator of music and fi ne arts programs, choir director, work-shop leader, adjudica-tor, and entertainment coordinator for major fundraising events. She hopes that the works she has chosen for appreciation will fi nd resonance among workshop participants regardless of musical tastes or experience.

“It is the soulful quality of the great masters that tran-scends generations and cultures,” she says.

Participants will be guided through the music of Hildegard Von Bingen (Caritas Abundat), concertos by Bach and Moz-art, and symphon-ies by Beethoven and Dvorak. Th e presenta-tion will include infor-mation about the lives of the composers and discussion of the ele-ments of each piece, off ering opportunity for a unique musical encounter.

Kootenay Storytelling Festival UpdateTh e idea of history through stories has developed into

a pretty tried and true concept and we will bring plenty of that, but we also don’t want the festival to seem stale with a feeling of “oh no, more of the same.”

Th e evolution of the festival has become a bit of a buzzword. We could talk about how Marilyn James of the Sinixt First Nation and Joe Pierre of the Ktunaxa First Nation will share insights into their cultures and histories through the stories of their peoples. Which they will. We could also talk about the exciting idea of

a welcoming camp onsite in Procter and Nelson that re-creates the atmosphere of how people here lived before contact with Europeans. Around that camp (we’ll have a car free block of Baker Street dedicated to the festi-val), other activities will be available. Th ere will be food of course, children’s stuff , (stories and otherwise) a few vendors and lots of great music, featuring the old festival favourites, Two For Tripping. Th e Kootenay Storytelling Festival is like a present from a loved one. You’ll like the package and you’ll love what’s in it. See you Saturday, Sep-tember 15 in Procter and Sunday, September 16 in Nelson.

Kaslo Potter Nominated For National Award

On October 2, at Canada’s national ceramics museum, the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, one ceramic artist will receive the $10,000 RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award. Th e winner will be selected through on-line and in-gallery voting by the public. Kaslo potter Sarah Lawless is among the fi ve nominees from across Canada.

A 2006 graduate of Kootenay School of the Arts at Sel-kirk College, Lawless says “I was fl oored when Rachelle Chinnery (a potter on Hornby Island) called to ask if she could nominate me. All of the other nominees do sculptur-al or conceptual work. My work is mainly functional pot-tery, and that is what the nominating committee requested from me. I hope that means they want to raise the profi le of functional pottery as an art form. I see it as interactive art.”

Each nominee was invited to submit a piece for an ex-hibition which will take place September 4 – 30 at the museum and online at www.gardinermuseum.com. Law-less’s submission Igneous Jug with Eggshell Cups is part of her line of wheel-thrown and hand-built porcelain vessels. Combining ergonomic usability with a sculptural empha-sis on form, her pots contain a defi nition of function that expands into the realm of the sensual.

She is hoping that her work’s appeal to other senses be-sides the visual will set it apart from that of the other nom-inees. Chinnery’s nominator statement (from the Gardiner Museum website) says “Sarah is poetically committed to beauty in function. Her work is a restrained expression of the natural world that honours utility while creating sen-sual and tactile experience. Both surface and form invite

touch, speak to the senses, and fundamentally expressthe essence of the material. While essentially minimalist,Sarah’s work resists the cool remove that clean line oft enhas. Her work is simple and elegant but also engaging – thekind that makes good dinner company.”

Besides her ceramics training at KSA, Lawless’s historyincludes a degree in English from Simon Fraser Univer-sity, a three-year stint teaching kindergarten in Bangkok, and a summer job as assistant to world-renowned potterWayne Ngan. She has received awards from the BC ArtsCouncil, American Orton Cone Box Show, and the Craft sAssociation of BC. Her work has shown in several solo, juried, and invitational exhibitions across Canada, in theUS, and in Japan. In 2008, she was the recipient of a BCCreative Achievement Award. In recent years, she has alsobeen an occasional lecturer/instructor at KSA. She haslived and worked in Kaslo since 2006, and her work is cur-rently available at the Live Art Shop in Kaslo.

To cast your vote for Sarah Lawless, visit www.gardiner-museum.on.ca between September 4 to September 30. Youcan fi nd more information about her work at www.sarahlaw-less.com or by visiting Sarah Lawless Pottery on Facebook.

We still have a bunch of wonderful kittens just waiting for their forever homes. Beauti-ful tabbies, black-and-whites, gray-and-whites, sleek black, multicolour – short hairs and fuzzy wuzzy ones too! All KAAP kittens are vet checked to make sure they are healthy, vaccinated, and fi xed and tattooed (at an appropriate age), for a very reasonable adoption fee. Cheaper than getting a “free kitten”! And for a limited time, we have a “One Pair for One Adoption Fee” special promotion – we’d like to see all these cuties adopted soon, and two kittens are better than one. Call Daryl at 250-551-1053 or check out www.kaap.ca. Come to our ADOPTION CLINIC at TOTAL PET in Castlegar on Saturday, Sept 15th, or visit our kittens in their foster homes any time.

Kaslo’s Honey CandlesGoes To Th e Country Music Awards!

Lots of country music in the Honey Candles offi ce these days! On June 28 this Kaslo business received an invita-tion from WOW Creations to take part in the Gift Lounge at the Canadian Country Music Awards on September 8 and September 9.

WOW Creations of Glendale California is involved in setting up Gift Lounges for events like the Oscars and Emmys as well. Th eir representative Mark Harris found Honey Candles in a store in Vancouver during a stopover on an Alaska cruise. His invitation means that Honey Candles owners, Roy and Leah Honkanen, get to meet the nominees, give them a Honey Candles gift and chat about country music and beeswax candles.

To fi nd out if your favourite country singer has been nominated, go to the Canadian Country Music Associa-tion website www.ccma.org, then vote for the fan’s choice award!

Home Invasions In Kaslo!Bears have been entering people’s homes in the West

Kootenay in search for food! Two bears that were en-tering homes in Kaslo have been shot, so hopefully the home invasions in our area will stop. If bears become too comfortable around people (habituated) and they are feeding almost entirely from our food (food con-ditioned), there is no reason for them leave and every reason to stay in our neighbourhoods. Bears who feed near residences may also become habituated to dogs and may even become aggressive towards dogs who try to chase them. When a bear realizes that most dogs are just all bark, the bear simply ignores the dog on its way to food. Th is is especially true when the bear can simply continue to feed in a fruit tree, ignoring the barking dog(s) below.

Bears do not need food from us to survive and we do not do them or ourselves any favours by allowing them to feed near us. All over North America, rural communities live with bears and the message is the same: “Don’t feed the bears!” When bears learn to fi nd food in our homes, they are no longer safe to live with. However, this behaviour is not the behaviour of a wild bear straight off the mountain. Home invasions are easily learned behaviour; perhaps the bear fi nds food near us and becomes active in neighbourhoods in the daytime. Th e bear doesn’t have any reason to leave town and easily learns to fi nd food in old sheds, tents, and porches, and walks through an open door into a kitchen.

For more information contact the North Kootenay Lake Bear Smart Program 250-353-1137, email [email protected] and come out to the Kaslo Community Bear Meeting, Monday, September 17 from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at the Lighthouse Th eatre in JV Humphries School.

Th e North Kootenay Lake Bear Smart Program is fund-ed by Bear Aware, the Village of Kaslo, the RDCK and Columbia Basin Trust.

We all know we need auto insurance in case of an accident.

That’s a given. But it’s also a comfort to know that our

insurance policy will cover those minor, but still annoying,

problems like damage from flying rocks. Falkins Insurance

Group is one of the few companies that offers private

insurance coverage for three free rock chip repairs per year,

with no deductible—just one example of its close attention

to the needs of its clients. With both ICBC and private

insurance coverage available from Falkins Insurance Group,

you can choose exactly which combination works best for

you. And you can be proud of a vehicle

that’s looking its best!

Freedom,you’ve

earned it

Falkins is your most trusted insurancegroup for over 100 years.
