pFor over ten years, generous Kaslo folk have been sup-

porting a special needs school in Barra De Navidad, Mex-ico where 50 mentally and/or physically challenged youthattend daily classes.

While it is a Government school, the only nancial/

physical help given by the government is in the payment ofthe teachers’ salaries, everything else needed to operate theschool including a bus and driver, hot meals for students,supplies and utilities must be found f rom other sources.

Te eye of Hurricane Patricia passed within 23 kilome-ters of the school and area and as the school was damaged,the concern is now for the students whose parents are askedto pay a small weekly fee to keep the school operational.

Most parents are either subsistence farmers who havecompletely lost their crops or their work as labourers,shermen with useless or damaged boats, or maids in themodest accommodations which also have been damagedand are not employed now, obviously the students will notbe sent to school thus endangering not only their educa-tion but their social interaction.

RADON GAS

Radon gas is the second leading causeof lung cancer after smoking. Radon is anaturally occurring gas found in the groundthroughout the world. Most homes that arein contact with the ground will contain someamount of radon gas. Radon becomes moreof a concern when it reaches high levels. Ra-don levels vary across the country. According

to Health Canada about seven per cent ofthe Canadian homes have radon levels thatmay be putting residents at risk. Here in theKootenays, including Kaslo, we have some“hot spot” areas with high radon levels.

Many houses contain recreation roomsor suites in the basement that are occupiedfor many hours per day. Being heavier than

air, radon accumulates in low lying areaslike basements and can be drawn to higherfloors within the building through naturalindoor air movement. Radon in combinationwith tobacco smoke, including second-handsmoke, can increase the risk substantially.Health Canada estimates that one in threesmokers exposed to high radon levels willdevelop lung cancer
