Membership Drive Reaches HalfwayIt’s a daunting prospect, but then the Nelson Civic Th e-

atre Society is no stranger to that. In two years, Nelson’s movie theatre has transformed from an empty box to a going concern, showing new and indie fi lms and com-munity events full time.

Th e Civic Th eatre’s fi rst annual membership drive – since its 2012 initiative to demonstrate community inter-est prior to the theatre re-opening – aims to renew or sign up 2,000 members. Th at’s 1/5 of Nelson’s population.

“A lot of people who signed up initially just wanted to see the theatre back – period. So we had former residents and people who simply have an interest in Nelson’s well-being buying memberships,” explains Membership Drive Coordinator Judy O’Leary. “Now, we’re attracting members on the strength of a fully open, active theatre that’s accessible to everyone.”

Th e Nelson Civic Th eatre had been dark for two years when a society fi rst formed to return the Big Screen to area residents. Th e current member-ship of 2,400 refl ects some of that early enthusiasm, but O’Leary says she believes the perks of membership and overall support make the goal of 2,000 achiev-able. “It’s just such a positive community project,” she says.

Perks of membership include a break at the box offi ce, free Member Movie Mondays, and a vote at the AGM. During the current drive, there are also priz-es to be won until mid-July. Th e theatre has recently introduced an annual child membership of $5 per year, which translates to a dollar off at the door.“Th at’s a great way to support the theatre, save money, and help us to keep off ering great children’s pro-gramming,” says O’Leary.

Th e Civic Th eatre’s goal of three theatres ensures economic sustainability and programming fl exibility. Strong membership numbers impress funders, which O’Leary says is of upmost im-portance in ongoing renova-tions. Upcoming improvements include a concession upgrade and the installation of air condi-tioning.

Membership information, in-cluding perks and prizes, can be found at www.civictheatre.ca. Th e membership booth can be found at various times at the Baker St. Wednesday Market, Marketfest, Save-on Foods, and at the Civic before fi lms. Th e theatre hopes to reach its goal by July 31.

Mr. Mojo Is Coming To TownPut on your dancing shoes, the library is bringing Mr.

Mojo to Kaslo! We are celebrating “funny business” at this year’s Summer Reading Club and Mr. Mojo is the perfect entertainer to get things shaking.

Listen to his song, Mr. Mojo, and he will tell you why “he’s going to help you turn your frown upside down,” when he comes to town. While you are at it, listen to the rest of his album, which can be found at: http://www.mrmojo.net/about.html Some of our favourites are Dirty Old Bear and Making Cookies.

His style ranges from reggae to funk to folk, with fun lyrics that children can relate to. Mr. Mojo’s songs appeal to all ages.

Nothing is as good as a live performance, especially when the entertainer engages his audiences and makes it a memorable experience for all. Th is is a wonderful chance for your family to enjoy a fabulous, free concert, with a fi rst-class, Kootenay-based entertainer. Mr. Mojo will be at the Vimy Park Gazebo on Saturday, July 5 at 11 am.

Th e Kaslo & District Public Library is very pleased to part-ner with the Kootenay Library Federation, the Community Fund of North Kootenay Lake and the Village of Kaslo to bring Mr. Mojo to our community.

High Muck A Muck: Playing ChineseAn artist and community collaboration, High Muck a Muck:

Playing Chinese, is an interactive exhibition that explores some of the experiences of Chinese Canadians immigrating to Canada and to Nelson. Th e exhibition opens July 4 at 6 pm.

Th e exhibition was created by a team of Nelson and Van-couver artists including Nicola Harwood, former director of Oxygen Art Centre, Fred Wah, former Poet Laureate of Canada, artist/performers Bessie Wapp and Th omas Loh and composer Jin Zhang. Signifi cant artistic contri-butions also came from Nelson performer Hiromoto Ida, visual artist Tomoyo Ihaya and electronic artist Phillip Djwa. As well, many community members contributed oral histories and stories, including Cameron Mah and Lawrence Mar, both of Nelson.

Visitors are invited to participate in the gamble of im-migration by fi lling in their own family immigration hist-ories and playing the Pak Ah Pu lottery. Th e materials cre-ated by the artists, including poems, images, music, video and interviews are triggered by audience interaction with the lottery – taking each person to his own destination and leaving him with a “fortune.”

Th e project is also an interactive website where all the materials of the exhibition can be experienced online.

High Muck a Muck: Playing Chinese, will be on exhib-ition at Oxygen Art Centre, July 5 - July 19, Wednesday to

Saturday from 1-5 pm. Artist talks will take place Satur-day July 5 at 1 pm and all are invited to attend.

Oxygen Art Centre gratefully acknowledges support for this project and exhibition from Creative BC, Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, Brit-ish Columbia Arts Council, Canada Arts Council, Van-couver Foundation and the Province of British Columbia. This, and other editorial articles may be viewed, printed or downloaded from the Editorial page at the Pennywise

On Saturday, June 21st 2014 Mrs. Nancy Baker, long time resident of South Slocan, BC, died at the age of 87 years. She passed away peacefully and in good care at Jubilee Manor in Nelson, ending a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Stanley Baker of South Slocan; her children Penny Stuyt (Pete) of Cherryville, David Baker (Brenda) of Millarville, Alberta and Peter Baker of North Vancouver. She is also survived by her brother Don Black of Keremeos, sisters Helen and Carol of Squamish; her grandchildren Marci-Lyne (Shawn), Margaret (Cary), Jordan, and Brandon and her great-grandchildren Allashua (5) Jerrika (5) and Aiden (3 mos).

Nancy was born as Xanthe Th anos, in Coleman, Alberta. She moved to Vancouver from the Crowsnest Pass at age two with her mother Ena on the sudden passing of her father Alex Th anos, a confectioner and owner of the Palm Café in Coleman. In Vancouver, her mother married her adopted father Donald Black and in time became big sister to Helen, Carol and Don. She attended Vancouver Technical School in Vancouver and developed a passion for sign painting, calligraphy and art. Working at Spencers Sign Shop with Dorothy Baker (who became her sister-in-law) honed those skills.

In 1947, on New Year’s Eve, she married Stan Baker, also of Vancouver and recently discharged from the Royal Canadian Navy. Th ey moved to the Kootenays where Stan found employment with West Kootenay Power and where they built a home on Baker Road in the Village of South Slocan, above the village store and post offi ce.

As well as a homemaker and great mother, Nancy was well known in South Slocan, Nelson, and in the Slocan Valley as a contributor to the community and frequent writer to the Nelson Daily News. She also served as a School Trustee, and as the last School Board Chairman of Slocan School District. She was a founder Selkirk College, and was involved in the establishment of the college’s Aviation program. For many years she lettered by hand each and every one of the Selkirk College graduation diplomas. In those years she also took many college courses, including those in Business Administration and Law.

Nancy worked in a number of Nelson businesses including Carmichael Paints, Kalyniuk Insurance services, Fidelity Life, and the local ICBC offi ce. Later she ran her own business, Signs of the Times, and was well known for hand lettering many local signs, boats and semi trucks. Her work even included some lettering for the movie Roxanne, shot in Nelson. Holding a special place in her heart were the fi re trucks that were refurbished by Selkirk College and distributed throughout the smaller communities in the province. She also especially loved lettering and pin striping (by hand) big rigs, logging trucks and boats.

Nancy shared a passion for the outdoors and the Kootenays with her husband Stan and was for many years a member of Kootenay Mountaineering Club. For a time she was the editor of the Kootenay Karabiner. She cross-country and downhill skied at both Nelson and Rossland. Nancy was into health foods and nutrition throughout her life, campaigned against junk mail and for women’s rights. She loved to garden, cook and bake. Her family all have our favourite recipes of those days.

A memorial service will be held at the Chapel of Th ompson Funeral Service Ltd., Nelson on her birthday, September 3, 2014 at 1:00 pm.

As an expression of sympathy, family and friends may donate to the Alzheimer Society of BC West Kootenays 809 – Davies Street, Nelson, BC V1L 3T2 or Jubilee Manor 500 West Beasley, Nelson, BC V1L 6G9

Condolences may be expressed online atwww.thompsonfs.ca

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing, in his home in Cooper Creek, of our father, grandfather and brother, Richard Alexander, who left us on Saturday, June 14.

Richard was born in Cooper Creek on May 21,  1946 to Ernie and Nell Alexander; he was the oldest of their fi ve children. Richard had a deep

love for the Lardeau Valley where he lived his entire life, a devotion to his family and friends, and always a smile and a joke.

Richard worked in the logging and mill industry his whole life.  He also had a passion for cars and Harley Davidsons in his younger years, later developing a talent for woodworking, pine mushroom picking and photography.

He was content with the simpler things in life. It wasn’t about what he had or did; his happiness was found in spending time with family and friends. Simple accomplishments made him proud; he was kind and humble. He loved to be busy, he provided, he puttered, he built, he created, he fi xed and repaired and made things for the people he loved and cared about.

He leaves behind to mourn his four children, Cade (Erinn) of Calgary,

Becky (Simon) of Vernon, Holly (Troy) of Cooper Creek, and Kevin of Meadow Creek; three grandchildren Tyler, Tatum and Kai; one brother Ken (Birthe) of Creston; and two sisters Donna (Dave) of Nelson and Cheryl (Bob) of Cooper Creek. He was predeceased by his sister Linda. He will be deeply missed by all.

We struggle to fi nd words to sum up our father’s life. He was a hard working man. He could build or fi x anything. We are immensely grateful for the time we had with him and we will miss the conversations, the jokes, the help; above all, being able to spend more time with him.

In keeping with Dad’s wishes, no funeral service was held. Instead, last Saturday afternoon, June 28, family and friends gathered to share stories and celebrate his life at the Lardeau Community Hall.

In Memory of Richard Alexander

Terry was born in Trail, BC in 1940, the son of Henry (d. 1984) and Jean (d. 2014) Schulte; younger brother to Carolyn (Cook; Blueberry Creek) and older brother to Rob-ert (Nepean, Ont). He always had time to share, a story to tell or wisdom to bestow, of his experiences growing up in Blueberry

Alec, cherished husband of 65 years to Vi Turner of Salmo, died Saturday, June 7 at 90 years of age in Ash-croft, BC. He was born in Kieghley, Yorkshire, England, and immigrated to Canada in 1929 at age fi ve with his parents. Alec grew up in Rossland.

In 1941, at age 17, Alec left school and voluntarily en-listed in the Royal Canadian Navy with the rank of Boy Seaman. He is remembered on Rossland’s St. George’s Church roll of those “who have volunteered for active service with Canada’s Fighting Forces.” He was trained as a telegrapher and saw duty in the Fisherman’s Re-serve patrolling the west coast on the: BC Lady, St Thomas and Nitinat. On November 29, 1944 Alec was assigned to the HMCS Gatin-eau in the Battle of the Atlantic. The ship participated in the D Day operations of June 6, 1944 that began the Battle of Nor-mandy. After V-J Day Alec saw duty on the River Class frigate the HMCS Grou. From Decem-ber 1945 through July 1947 he was assigned to the HMCS Uganda. She was the fi rst Ca-nadian naval vessel to sail on a goodwill tour after the end of WWII. Uganda departed Esqui-malt February 1946, circum-navigating South America and returning to home port May 1946. Alec’s navy engagement expired March 8, 1949. During his duty in the Royal Canadi-an Navy he was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the 1939-1945 Star, the France & Germany Star, and the 1945 War Medal.

Alec married Violet Florence Chesney in December of 1948. Their daughters were born in 1949, 1952 and 1954. Alec and his family lived in Nelway from 1955 to 1966, when they moved to Salmo.

In 1952 Alec joined the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 14 at Rossland. His lifetime activities were at Branch 217, Salmo. He served in a number of capacities on the local Legion executive and rose to Zone Com-mander West Kootenay. Alec was instrumental in lead-ing a negotiation and administration team to establish the independent living facility in his community of Salmo. He was recognized as a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion in 1981. The Royal Canadian

Legion Branch 217, Salmo awarded Alec a Certifi cate of Merit in 1983 in recognition of “years of exemplary, outstanding and consistent work for the Legion.” On May 2, 2004, RCSCC Hampton Gray VC invited Alec to attend to the laying of the wreath during the Battle of the Atlantic Commemorative Service at Nelson.

Alec’s service to his country extended beyond his navy enlistment and Legion membership. He saw a 32 year career in the federal Public Service as a Customs Offi cer that extended from 1949 to 1981. He worked primarily at the Port of Nelway; he was also posted in Patterson and Waneta in the West Kootenay, as well as Roosville in the East Kootenay. In 1967, the Govern-

ment of Canada recognized Alec’s contributions to his country by awarding him a Centennial Medal for “valuable service to the nation.”

Alec was also a commit-ted community member. He helped build the Royal Cana-dian Legion Branch 217 facili-ty in Salmo, was a member of the Salmo Golf Port, as it was known, and helped build the course’s clubhouse. He was much loved and recognized for his cartoons of local golfers that were featured on the walls of the golf club’s 19th hole. Alec was an active member of the work crew that created the volunteer-operated Salmo Ski Hill on Brushy Mountain. He was a member of the Salmo Volunteer Fire Department.

Alec was an avid sportsman. The winters of his youth were spent skiing Red Mountain, the summers caddying at the Rossland Golf Course. As an adult he could reliably be

found on the Salmo Ski Hill or the golf course. In lat-er years Alec and Vi spent winters on the Big Island of Hawaii.

He is remembered as an honourable, modest, and dutiful man with an exceedingly dry wit, who was al-ways a gentleman. Alec will be lovingly celebrated and missed by his wife Vi, three daughters Danita (Greg) of Ashcroft, Dawn (Grant) of Surrey, Diane (Eric) of Pahoa, Hawaii; three grandchildren Darcy (Yona), Lauren and Matthew; and great-grandson Makana.

Awwww … how do we explain to this little sweetheart that the only reason she isn’t adopted like her litter mates are, is because she is a black kitten? She doesn’t know that black kittens/cats are always adopted last. Cleo is adorable, funny, curious, loving, and most of all, deserving of the very best forever home. Maybe this week? Let’s hope so. Call KAAP at 250-551-1053 or visit www.kaap.ca/adopt to see our adoptables. All KAAP kittens are vaccinated, vet checked, spayed/neutered, and tattooed for an adoption fee of $175.

Interior Health Welcomes TwoNew Physicians to Kaslo

Interior Health is pleased to announce that Kaslo has a full complement of physicians thanks to the signing of two permanent, full-time physicians to the community over the last two weeks.

Dr. Isabelle-Anne Fontaine started her regular schedule at Victorian Community Health Centre on June 16 and Dr. Ben Allen offi cially joins the Kaslo team on Sept. 15. Both physicians have done a number of shift s at the health centre over the last few months prior to offi cially signing permanent contracts and Dr. Allen will be doing addition-al shift s in Kaslo over the summer. Th e new physicians will support primary health care and 9 am to 5 pm weekday emergency department services in the community.

“We’re very fortunate to have found two highly-skilled physicians with diverse and impressive backgrounds who will provide excellent care to local residents,” says Dr. Curtis Bell, IH Community Medical Director. “Both physicians are a great fi t for the community and having two permanent physicians brings stability to our services for patients of the Kaslo area.”

Dr. Fontaine came to BC from Quebec and has been a family physician since 2007. Over the past six years, she practiced at the Family Medicine Unit in Levis, Quebec, teaching and supervising medical residents in family medicine. She has experience with geriatric patients in long term care units and has a particular interest in pal-liative care. She was a pharmacist for fi ve years prior to becoming a physician.

Dr. Allen is originally from West Texas and received his medical training in Virginia. He is board certifi ed in family practice in both the United States and Canada and is the 1988 recipient of the Lloyd Damsey Medal for Family Practice. He has practiced both primary care and emergency medicine at clinics, health units and military bases throughout North America, Asia and Africa. Prior to moving to BC, he founded and practiced at an urgent care clinic in Lethbridge, Alberta. Most recently, he has supported primary and emergency care at the at various health centres around the province.

Both physicians have an interest in rural medicine and are coming to Kaslo for the professional and personal opportunities the community has to off er. Residents want-ing to book a regular physician appointment can do so by calling 250-353-2291.

Jumbo Valley At Risk - But You Can Help!

Th e BC Government has a legal contract with the pro-posed developer of the Jumbo Ski Resort that includes some 200 commitments. But our government would al-low the developer to move ahead with construction with-out verifying that these commitments have been satisfi ed.

Th e developer has submitted an application to build the fi rst-ever year-round road into Jumbo this summer. Now it’s up to us to make sure that every letter of the law is observed to protect sensitive species and ecosystems. You can help!

Come to an organizing meeting on July 3 at 7 pm at the Duke Hyssop Labour Centre, 101 Baker Street, Nelson

Donate to help us fi ght the developer in the media, in the courts, and on the ground.

Volunteer to help spread the word and raise funds at markets, festivals, and events throughout the summer.
