1. GENERAL
1.1 Purpose
This inanual explains how to maintain and service type TD-L1706Autornatic Digital Direction Finder (ADDF).
1.2 General Notes
1) Reconfii’rn connections of external wiring and connectors hen anyabnormality occurs, and perforrn trouble shooting.
2) Referring to data books, etc., thoroughly understand the perforrn—ance of serniconductors including IC, FET and transistors employed
in
this ADDF.
3) Replace parts, paying attention to the following matters.a) Do not ovei’—heat parts.
b) Do not use dropped or darnaged parts.

2. MAINTENANCE TOOLS AND MEASUR ING EQUIPMENT
2.1 .Maintenance Tools
Tools to be used in the maintenance of this unit are shown inTable 1.1.

3. TECHNICAL DESCR1PTION
3.1 General
The Model TD—L1706 is an automatic digital direction finder (ADDF)developed by the TAIYO MUSEN CO., LTD. Since the model is designed formobile use, it provides fast and effective survey on radio emissionwith füilowing: (Refer to Drawing NO. 041121A)
— flat antenna system without moving part or projecting part
— digital displays for relative bearing and analogue one for relativelearing
— It is used a inicrocomputer-system for every control of the ADDF.
— The ADDF consists of Flat antenna unit, DF control unit, D1SPLAYuni t.
3.2 Technical Description
3.2.1 DF Control unit
The unit consists of foliowing subunits to control the antennasystem and the receiver, to process the data for direction findingand to display the resultant bearing data or functional status fordirection finding (Refer to Drawing NO. 041122A).

(1) 1F AMP (A9642)
The PCA is provided to process the analog signal from the receiver and is composed of an IF—Arnplifier to amplify a 10.7 MHziF signa1 a detector for AGC, an AM detector and a BPF for DFsignal.
The 1F signal from the receiver is amplified by L1—U3 and U4 isan 1F amplifier for AGC and an AM detector.
The detected signal is amplified by OP amplifier, U5 and issmoothed out by BPF, U6 for 135 Hz (Refer to Drawing \O.041123A).

The PCA is consisted of Data 1/0 Lol- bearing display, a decoderfor 135 Hz modulation signals and a decoder for IC selectioncode (Refer to Drawing 0. 041124A),
The control of bearing display and modulation signals is made bya processor Uh of CPU(1), A7343.
The rnodulating signals for antenna control are generated by U13and U18. The reference signal is also generated by U13 and formodulating signal with 45° phase difference are produced by 1218.

1214 (Parallel 1/0) is a Data 1/0 for the azimuth display ofDisplay unit. PA0-PA3 of 1214 are bearing data of the azimuthdisplay and PA4—PA7 of 1214 are latch signals. U8 is decoder toselect IC.

(3) CPU(l) (A7343)
The major part of data processing for direction finding is madeby the PCAs (Refer to Drawing NO. 041125A).
Uh is a 8 bit rnjcro—pi’ocessor and processes the preprogramrnedsoftware stored in P-ROM (Programmable Read Only Meinory), orinterrupted instruction from DF signal. U19 (Octal input) is aninput port for DF/RCV. UlS (Parallel 1/0) is an output port forclock frequency of a switched capacitor filter (1J6, MF1OCN ofA9642, 1F).
U6 is decoder to select an active IC.

(4) CPU(2) (A7344)
The PCA operates as an processor connected with A7344 by the CPUbus line (Refer to Drawing NO. 041126A).
Uh is address Iatches for U4 (P-ROM) and [5 (RAM, Random AccessMemory). [2 is a decoder for IC selection code. [3 is a divid—er for a clock of CRU and a clock of a program counter, [6.
[9 is a 10 MHz oscillator for a clock frequency of CRU.

(5) ANT DRIVE (A9612)
The FCA generates signals to modulate antenna and provides self
checking device. The PCA comprises following circuits as is
given in Drawing NO. 041127A.
Driving circuit for BM (Balanced Modulation) signal, 135 Hz to
control antenna. Four kinds of BM signal to rnodulate the anten—
na are for 0 °, 015° , 090° , 0135°
The signals are amplified by OP AMPs (Li, 1J2) and fed to the
antenna. The circuit also has indicators whjch denotes break inthe output circuits with a green light as shown in the following
table.
Flat Antenna
(6) TEST (A9626)
2 BM (0 ° , 090° ) are used only.
The PCA is provided for the self test facility and check bearing
from each receiving position using the test switch (Refer to
Drawing NO. 041128A).

Adcock Antenna: 4 BM (0 ° , 045° , 090° , 0135° ) signals are
used.
- Antenna Test —
After ending the test, press the OFF” button of Test function.
(7) AVR (A9641)
The PCA has three (3) kinds of AVR (Automatic Voltage
Reguiatoi-). Ul is +9V AVR, U2 is for -5V and U3 is a DC/DCconverter for —9V (Refer to Drawing \Q. 041129A)
3.2.2 Display Unit
(1) BEARING DISPLAY (A9620)
The PCA is composed of 72 LEDs for circular display and 8 LEDsfor digital display. The circular display indicates the bearingof the measured signal in 5” step (Refer to Drawing NO.011131A)
(2) DRIVE (A9621)
The PCA is provided to drive the above displays by a 8 bit timesharing signal from 1/0, A9618.

The data for digital LEDs are latched by L2, U3 and L4, and datafor azirnuth display are latched by Lö and U6, and each IC isenabled by selecting signal generated by Li (Refer to DrawingNO. 041132A.

4. ITEMS FOR MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
4.1 Maintenance and Service to be Ferformed
The ADDF should be maintained and serviced according to the attached Test Procedure. When any troubles are discovered, the procedures described in 4.2 should be applied. To find troubles, refer toattached flow charts.
4.2 Trouble Shooting
4.2.1 General
When any abnormal condition is discovered, follow the ti’oubleshooting flow chart described in 4.2.2 to find modules in trouble.When a damaged inodule is found, follow the circuit diagram and otherrelated documents describing voltage and wave form to find damagedparts and to replace them.
4.2.2 Flow chart for Troubie Shooting
This fiow chart is for finding modules and parts in trouble.Carefully observe inalfunctiori and inspect the receiver following aflow chart corresponding to the condition of malfunction.
The flow charts explain ineans to determine conditions of trou—bie, to guess positions of trouble and to handle damaged parts. Asfor handling of damaged parts, inspection of connectors and cablesand rePlacement of modules with standby modules are directed.
