FREAK STORM HITS KONDININ

Severe storms and heavy rainfall ripped through the Upper Great Southern on Sunday 25th February 2018 with Kondinin being one of the areas most severely hit. It was certainly the case of the calm before the storm, as within minutes the high winds and rainfall came in quickly with power lines down causing the power out almost immediately. There was a lot of damage to properties within the town site and surrounding farms including roof sheets ripped off houses and sheds, fences down, trees fallen over and various loose items uplifted from yards. Whilst there was lots of water on the roads, the freak storm put the new drainage work in town to the test, which certainly seemed to help the flow of water from the streets where work has been completed.

The Kondinin Primary School was also hit, with parts of the Administration Building roof torn off, ‘It was a bit of a shock, but I think its probably a blessing in disguise that the classrooms and main learning areas for the students weren’t damaged’, said Sarah Baden-Powell, the Principal of Kondinin Primary School. School was able to resume on Tuesday 27th February 2018.

Shaun Franich, the Kondinin Swimming Pool Manager had a great vantage point from the pool building watching the storm roll in. Apart from lots of leaves in the swimming pool itself, the building and the shade sails held up very well. Shaun has now cleaned the pool beautifully and opened this morning for early morning swimming.

A big thank you to everyone including, Western Power, FESA, Shire work crews and local volunteers who are still working hard so that power can be restored and roads, homes, businesses and public places cleaned up and made safe and accessible.

The new Kondinin Swimming Pool has been very well utilised this year, with record numbers through the gate since it was first opened in 2014. It has been great to see a steady group of children attending the recently re-established swimming club. The tadpole group led by Tammy and Jen have shown amazing improvements in their ability and confidence in the water over the last few months. The dolphin and shark groups assisted by Rachel, Shaun, Ruth, Maria, Sarah and Ellen have shown strong improvement in their stroke technique and fitness. The swimming club has greatly assisted the Kondinin kids at recent swimming events, including the swimming carnival in Hyden last Friday and the Corrigin swim meet on the 18th February 2018 attended by Angela Andrews and Bridie Northey. A special mention to Bridie Northey who is a regular participant at Kondinin swimming club and early morning swimming who was the intermediate girls champion at the school swimming carnival on Friday 23rd February - well done Bridie. Well done also to Dieter Bennell and Michelle Collard who were also championship recipients at the swimming carnival held last Friday in Hyden. Swimming club will continue throughout March when the pool remains open. All kids are able to attend, even if you haven’t attended before. Just remember if you don’t have a season pass to the pool bring along $2 for pool entry. Swimming classes and the sausage sizzle are free! The Kondinin Aquatic Centre not only offers a place to swim but social events as well with the screening of the Lego Man movie held last Saturday evening. This was well attended and many enjoyed a BBQ at the pool before the movie started. Like the ‘Kondinin Aquatic Centre’ new page on Facebook to keep up with what’s on!
