• I learned to fly from my Dad, National Soaring Hall of Fame member Gunter Voltz. I used the Kolstad Award at the University of North Dakota to earn a degree in Aviation Administration.

• During college I had the privilege to tow and instruct at the great Black Forest Gliderport. This led to a career in aviation as an airline pilot, currently I am an MD 80 captain for American Airlines.

• A few years ago, I donated a 1-26 to the SSA that had come back to me after many years. It is the same 1-26 that my Dad purchased in the early 60’s and was used by many young pilot members of Air Explorer Post 309. Under the late Dean Carswell's leadership, the SSA used the 1-26 as a prize to help expand membership. The winner kindly donated it to the Texas Soaring Association where it resides now.

• From 2005 to 2010 my wife Lisa and I restored a Piper Pawnee towplane for TSA. • In the 36 years since my first solo, it has been my great honor to have flown with,

worked on airplanes with, and shared hangar stories with some of the greatest names in aviation and soaring in particular.

• After graduating from Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO, with a Bachelors Degree in Physics, Alice Palmer spent a year as a research assistant at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. After that year she decided to focus her career more toward aviation.

• She obtained her FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic certificate and spent several years managing Soar Black Forest, a commercial soaring operation in Colorado. Alice continued to build her career with connections to aviation. She is now an Instructional Design Manager with FlightSafety Services Corp., designing training courses for U.S. Air Force aircrew members, specifically in support of the KC-135 Stratotanker and the C-5 Galaxy. She is looking forward to the day when she will have time to return to soaring, so she can complete her diamond badge in a 1-26 and obtain her two-lennie pin.

1983Steve Leonard

• Steve Leonard was born into a soaring family. He attended his first soaring contest at the age of three months.

• Steve graduated from the University of Kansas in May of 1986 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. His first job out of college was in the flight test department of the Boeing Military Airplane Company. He worked in Flight Test on the Digital Autopilot upgrade for the B-52, on the Joint STARS airplane, an unmanned vehicle, and on the Presidential Airplane, also known as Air Force One.

• Since 1990, Steve has worked for the Cessna Aircraft Company. He has been involved with initial structural detail design, was acting lead on the rudder control system on Cessna JPATS entry, and has spent a large portion of his Cessna career working in hydraulic systems as a designer and specialist in resolving field issues. His most recent assignment has him working on the flight control systems of the Citation Ten.

• In the soaring world, Steve has become known as a "collector of sailplanes". He enjoys fun flying, OLC flying, and racing, primarily in the Open Class.

• As part of the US Junior Soaring Team in 1991, 1993, and 1995 Sean competed in Sweden, France and Poland. In 2010, Sean was on the US Club Class Team flying at the FAI World Gliding Championships in Prievidza, Slovakia finishing 8th place. He is going back on the US Club Class Team to A. G. Chaves, Argentina in 2012/2013. Currently he has eight State and two National soaring records. When not competing he can be found flying for fun at Warner Springs, CA and mentoring local pilots.

• Sean moved from Michigan to California in 1993. While flight instructing and towing gliders part time he learned about the bankcard industry. Within a couple of months began working full time for a bank establishing new merchant credit card accounts. In 1999 Sean started his own company, Electronic Merchant Services (EMS). EMS now has several employees and is a registered ISO / MSP with US Bank - Minn. MN. EMS is a leader in credit card merchant processing providing service to retail, mail order, phone order, business to business and e-commerce merchants. Sean has been a guest at several venues speaking on bankcard topics and has articles published in newspapers. Recently he took part in the inaugural class of Certified Payments Professional (CPP) sponsored by the Electronic Transaction Association. Sean is currently one of a handful holding a CPP certificate in California.

• The first photo was taken in 1985, about 4 years prior to receiving the Kolstad Award. It was taken at El Mirage, CA after passing the private pilot glider flight test. Gene Hamm, the examiner, is on the left and John Krey, the tow pilot, is on the right. The next photo was taken several years ago standing next to my Luscombe at Long Beach Airport after I took my daughter up for her first airplane ride.

• As far as background, I have not flown in about two years and did not go

on to a career in aviation. I did stay somewhat active in soaring and owned three airplanes including a 1939 Luscombe. For a few years I did a little bit of weekend towing flying Callair tow planes for a local soaring club. I live in Long Beach, CA with my wife Susan and my two children, Ryan (age 11) and Jennie (age 10). I am in the outdoor advertising industry and I am a VP of Operations for a billboard company.

1990Erik Nelson

• I was fortunate enough to receive a Kolstad Award scholarship as a high school student in the late 1980s, and applied it toward my undergraduate tuition at Harvard University. While there, I majored in history, completed my premedical requirements, kept a part-time job, and served as president of the Harvard Flying Club. I also met my wife and perpetual crew, Sarah, and introduced her to the fantastic and fringe world of competition soaring. We went together to France in 1993 for my third and final under-25 gliding championships with the U.S. team.

• I took a six-year break from racing while a medical student and intern at the University of Vermont, but added an instrument rating and stayed current in sailplanes at Sugarbush and Stowe. When we moved to Boston for residency, I joined the MIT Soaring Association, bought a share of a Standard Cirrus, and started flying regional contests again. After training, I became a musculoskeletal radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and instructor in radiology for Harvard Medical School. Sarah, the bank, and I bought a Ventus 2, and we expanded the crew roster when my daughter was born five years ago. We currently live in Winchester, VA, I fly with the Mid-Atlantic Soaring Association, and in as many regional and national competitions as the schedule allows.

1992David Graham

• He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in Daytona Beach, FL where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Science.

• Major Graham earned his wings after attending Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, MS where he flew the T-37 and T-38.

• He then trained in the F-16C in the 62nd Fighter Squadron, Luke AFB, AZ. • In 2001, Major Graham was assigned to the 35th Fighter Squadron at Kunsan AB, Republic of Korea where

he served as an F-16 CG Flight Lead and squadron scheduler. • Major Graham was then reassigned to the 55th Fighter Squadron at Shaw AFB, SC. During his tenure at

Shaw, he served as an F-16 CJ Instructor Pilot, Chief of Squadron Training, and Chief of Squadron Safety. During that time, Major Graham deployed to Incirlik AB, Turkey where he flew combat missions in support of Operation Northern Watch.

• In 2005, Major Graham was then reassigned to the 9th Fighter Squadron at Holloman AFB, NM where he trained in the F-117A Stealth Fighter. During his tour, Major Graham served as an F-117A Instructor Pilot, Chief of Squadron Safety, Flight Commander, and Assistant Director of Operations.

I spent the first 10 years of my career as an Engineer at Honeywell working on various integrated avionics within their Primus 2000 and Primus EPIC systems. While at Honeywell, I led development teams for functionality on many aircraft (Gulfstream, Dassault, Cessna, Agusta, Hawker, Bombardier). My last two years at Honeywell, I worked as an Applications Engineer participating in flight test on the AW139 Helicopter and Dassault Falcon 900 aircraft. Since leaving Honeywell in 2005 I have worked for ACSS, an L-3 Communications and Thales Company. My current responsibilities as an Engineering Manager include Development and Installation of ACSS surveillance products (TCAS, TAWS, Transponders, and ADS-B Applications) on customer aircraft all over the world.

• My wife Becky and I have been blessed to become a foster family, so our home is filled with our biological, adopted, and foster children. With ten years of marriage and six children ranging 1 month to 9 years old, we stay very busy. With the busy personal life I have not continued flying and do not stay active in the glider community.

I attended Rice University in Houston, TX and earned a BS in Biochemistry. From there I went to graduate school and earned a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. I did several years of postdoctoral work at UW- Madison under the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; after which I took my current position as the Director of Molecular Biology at BioSentinel Pharmaceuticals in Madison, WI. On the soaring side of things, after receiving the Kolstad award, I became a CFIG and continued to fly for many years with the Soaring Club of Houston. I helped over 60 glider pilots solo, earn their ratings, and still loved teaching whenever possible. When I moved to Wisconsin, I flew with Sylvania Soaring Adventures in Beloit, WI as an instructor and demo pilot on the weekends, and flew with them for many years.

• My scholarship helped pay for my aerospace engineering education at Penn State, where I was an active member of the PSU Soaring Club. While in school, I designed and built a series of experimental aircraft with my roommate, Andy Balk, and friends. These included the SB-1 ultralight glider, SB-2 composite airplane and SB-3 wing in ground effect. After college, I worked with unmanned air vehicles for a while.

• In 2007 I started MotoPOD LLC (www.MotorcyclePilot.com) to provide pilots with innovative ground transportation solutions. Our first product was a patented belly pod that’s designed to carry a street-legal motorcycle. After landing, it takes about 90 seconds to remove the motorcycle, unfold the handlebars and ride away. By combining air + ground transportation, we’re working to equip a new breed of pilots with convenient door-to-door travel. The pods are currently in production for the Van’s RV-10 and we’re working on a certified version for the Cirrus SR-20 and SR-22. It will also be available as a removable/swappable sensor pod for aerial surveillance, search and rescue, disaster response, tsunami warning and other applications. More exciting projects are coming soon.

Since winning the award, I placed second in the 2005 Region 3 Sports Class and crewed for the US Junior Team at the WJGC in Husbands Bosworth, UK. I have since become extremely busy with school. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Furniture Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2008. After working in Connecticut for six months, I decided to go back to school to pursue graphic design. I am now completing a MFA at SCAD's Atlanta campus. • After college I flew a King Air 90, Twin Otter, and Cessna Caravan domestically and internationally. I then entered the US Air Force and became an Officer. Presently I am working as a contractor in Afghanistan. I fly a King Air 100 for Flight Landata. We make 3D images of the ground that are overlaid with high resolution photography. This January I will begin distance learning courses and will begin working on my ME degree. I hope to fly for FEDEX or UPS in the future.

• Outside of work I have been constructing a 1926 Stamer Lippisch Zogling. Right now I am waiting for spring to cover the aircraft before I donate it to the Golden Age Air Museum in Bethel, PA. There it will serve as a flying part of their collection.

• In recreational flight, I have instructed two students who have received their Private SEL. I have also instructed multiple students on tailwheel aircraft operations. At the moment I own a Ka-6. It is a pleasure to fly, yet I hardly have time to fly it. This summer I hope to get back into cross country soaring and would be delighted to take it on course. I presently fly out of either Ball Airfield, NC or Beltzville, PA.

• I am now Commercially licensed in Glider and Multi-Engine airplanes, as well as CFI, CFII and MEI certificates totaling about 1200 hours time. (Glider CFI is next!)

• I stay busy over the summers now, mostly instructing in tailwheel aircraft and towing gliders in a Pawnee, getting the occasional glider flight.

• I just turned 21 last week and will graduate with a Bachelors degree in Aviation Management from SIUC in May 2012. I have also been a part-time flight instructor in the Aviation Flight program since the Fall 2011 semester. After I graduate, I hope to start flying for a Part-135 freight feeder operation, or a operation in Missouri that needs a charter pilot, glider pilot, tow pilot, skydive pilot, flight instructor, and aerobatic warbird pilot all in one person.

I joined the Valley Soaring Club based at Randall Airport in Middletown, NY in September 2006. I soloed and earned my 'A' Badge in the club's Schweizer 2-33 trainer soon after on November 18th, 2006. I went on to earn my "B" badge on August 11th, 2007, and my "C" badge the very next day on August 12th, 2007. I later obtained my private pilot glider certificate the same day as my Dad on September 1st, 2008. As a member of Valley Soaring Club, I have had the privilege of flying many gliders. I have flown in SGS 2-33's, 1-26's, and a 1-34. As well as the ASK-21. I have also flown countless times in the Schweizer 1-26 serial number 2. Since last year, I grew an interest into the competition side of soaring. Henry Nixon, my chief glider instructor, allots a certain number of contests that he routinely flies to passengers. He takes his ASK-21 and offers the back seat to passengers from our club. I have had the opportunity twice now to fly with him. Once at the Wurtsboro, NY Region 2 North contest, and most recently at the Region 2 contest held at Mifflin, PA.

CHRIS SOLOED JULY 2011 IN AN ASK-21ON HIS 16TH BIRTHDAY HE PASSED THE PRIVATE GLIDER CHECK RIDE, AND SOLOED A CESSNA 172STARTED HIS CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING AND WORKING ON FURTHER BADGES.HE IS ACTIVE IN A LOCAL BOY SCOUT TROOPHE IS WORKING TOWARD HIS EAGLE SCOUT.HE IS A MEMBER OF, ORGANIZED FUNDRAISERS FOR, AND HAS MADE PRESENTATIONS FOR THE PRISONER OF WAR/MISSING IN ACTION CLUB. HE IS VICE PRESIDENT OF FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA AND HAS WON SEVERAL AWARDS FOR HIS ACTIVITIES.HE HAS ALSO BEEN A SPEAKER MANY TIMES SINCE 2011 AT THE FRONT ROYAL AIRSHOW.
