SB of University of Calcutta:

IEEE Calcutta University student Branch has been involved in several activities by organizing lectures, meeting including some big events.

The Branch celebrated the “Indian National Science Day” on (June 28, 2012) as a joint organiser with the IEEE Photonics Society Kolkata Chapter. 28th February is celebrated as the National Science Day in India every year. Such outreach programs in schools help to spread the knowledge on science and technology to students residing in remote villages.

After a formal inauguration, two lectures were delivered by Branch Councelor Prof N. R. Das and Prof. P. K. Bose on some basics of Electronics and Photonics in the present scenario.

The student members/volunteers demonstrated different simple experiments illustrating the topics which the students study in school. They got opportunity for handling electrical components (resistors, diodes, capacitors), LEDs, lasers, optical fibers and understanding their properties and applications.

Some advanced projects were shown to develop curiosity among them. These include rain alarm and propagation of sound through optical fiber, quiz circuit etc. The interest, participation and enthusiasm of the students were noteworthy. Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) is formed first time in Kolkata Section

with 7 members and Prof. Iti Saha Misra is the Chairperson for this group.

The first program of SIGHT on Low Cost Low Bandwidth Remote Virtual Educational Platform for underserved, under IEEE Kolkata Section has been practically demonstrated in front of 20 IEEE members on 30 Nov 2012 at Broadband Wireless Communication Laboratory, involving 3 rooms and one sitting room of the coordinator, Prof. Iti Saha Misra, in a separate building acted as the Server Room.

The objective of the project is to provide remote classroom teaching where at a time considerable number of students can be served for the primary level of education and/or to a higher level of

teaching assistance where availability of resources is the problem. An Internet based solution that assumes computer facilities at the end points is the main concept. Simultaneous use of more than one educational centre is possible in this platform.

Audio visual advancing controls are maintained from the central Server node (Teacher’s Room) from where only voice is broadcast, reducing the requirement of the communication bandwidth considerably. The voice will be streamed and the keystrokes controlling the presentation will be communicated along with the voice, feeling real time effect of the presentation.

The technology can assist the physically challenged people and empower them to be part of the mainstream life with the facility of remote class room teaching. The second program of SIGHT was demonstrated on a workshop on “Dignity in Disability: Women In Focus”, jointly organized by Jadavpur University and National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, on 10 th Dec 2012.
