Among the artists whocame into the lime-light during the 1960s,
was artist and painter SaktiBurman. His recent workswere recently showcased atthe Aakriti Art Gallery in the city.
His approach towards art, both in content and form issomewhat different. In his art, there is an assimilation of theartistic philosophy of the Eastand the West. To bring out this
harmony, his formplays a vital role.Burman is notonly a painter, butin recent times, hehas also taken upsculpting. His worksare mostly figurative. But theassociation of figures defiesthe general norms and logic of reality.
In the present show, barringfour oils, most of his paintings, about 20 in number,
are in water colours which hemade during the ’60s and ’80s. In his works, he trans-forms vacuity of the spaceinto divine light of the skythrough treatment of his figurative forms.

Walks of Kolkata greeted all andshared the history of the place withthem. The first stop was theCurrency Building followed by theDead Letter Office. As the teammoved ahead, Jay pointed out to theiron stumps that were stationed infront of all the government offices.“These iron stumps can be found allover the Dalhousie area. They wereplaced in front of the offices for thepeople to tie their horses,” Jayinformed. A visiblyexcited lady was seenclicking pictures ofthe monuments. “Iam glad that TOI hastaken up this initia-tive to help us knowthe EuropeanKolkata. I am lovingthis trail,” Simransaid. CommodoreRavi Ahluwaliajoined in with his wife Manjula.“This was a good way to start theday. These are places that I haveseen earlier, but nothing like revisit-ing them.
