Fellow Congregants:
Please remember to attend the TOL Coffeehouse concert

performances is Vance Gilbert , April 21st. This shows is in
the Reyner Family Social Hall at 7:00pm. Please join your
fellow TOL congregants on the Spirit of Lake Murray cruise,

Please take a moment to thank your Rabbi and Board Members. They
continually work really hard to ensure the financial and religious integrity of our
Tree of Life Congregation.

FROM THE RABBI
Chodesh Tov (Wishing us a good April!),
Rabbi Eric Mollo
From the Rabbi
"For many of us the march from Selma to Montgomery was about
protest and prayer. Legs are not lips and walking is not kneeling. And
yet our legs uttered songs. Even without words, our march was
worship. I felt my legs were praying." – Abraham Joshua Heschel 1965
Dear Friends,
As we now turn the corner to the month of April and the start of
Passover, we should take a moment to look back on all that has
been done at Tree of Life in March. I will begin by offering my
congratulations to two wonderful students, Sam Helman, and Wyatt
Tucker, who were called to the Torah for the first time a few weeks
ago. They each led beautiful services and we will certainly look
forward to their continued leadership at other services in the years
to come.
Over the last full weekend in March, several of our students and parents spent Shabbat praying
with their feet. It was humbling to be in the presence of so many young activists who will soon
be able to voice their needs with votes. Taking to the streets with passionate voices and an
indefatigable will to change hearts and minds, our students are becoming our teachers in the
way that they are tackling major issues affecting our country. There were over three thousand
people at the rally in Columbia on March 24th. I am absolutely k’velling over the way our kids
represented Tree of Life and the Jews all over the country. In fact, the faces of our teens and the
signs they made have now been used in several national outlets and publications (and so they
should be!). With our kids leading the way towards tangible change for a safer world, the future
is looking brighter and brighter.
Mazal Tov to our students and their families on a job well done.
The evening of March 24th many of us witnessed the marriage of Michael Bank and Laurin
Long. Michael and Laurin are relatively new members but even if you have not had the
privilege to meet them, you may be familiar with Laurin’s story which has been featured on
WLTX. She is currently battling stage 4 cancer and while we recognize the scariness and
severity of the situation, we can also recognize the need to continue living life to the fullest. I
was honored to officiate this wedding and wish the happy couple all the best!

From the Education Director
Earlier this month, despite some wet and dreary weather, the Brotherhood was out in
force, along with our Mitzvah Corps, to prepare the temple grounds for the Big Nosh (May
6th). There were several dozen prayer books in storage that were no longer usable.
Rather than whisk them away to the cemetery for burial, we decided to consecrate a spot
on our own property and use it as a teaching moment. All funerals are sad, but some are
also mixed with joy. Burying our books was bittersweet much like a send-off for a
Centenarian.
Each child got to take part in the ceremony by placing a book in the grave/genizah (burial
plot for sacred literature). We also got to show and tell about the greatest mitzvah of our
tradition, burial, without death as a sad or scary context. Rabbi Eric demonstrated how to
shovel the earth into the plot first backwards, to show our reluctance to bury, followed by
a few regular shovel-fulls to participate in the mitzvah, and then planting the shovel back
in the earth for the next person so as not to transmit grief to another. Judaism is full of
really wonderful traditions that help us cope in difficult times. Having an opportunity to
learn about how and why we do them gives us a script to from which to operate. When
we inevitably experience a situation in which we don't know what to say or do, we're able
to fall back on the rhythm of our rituals.

Kesher Committee
WRJ / Sisterhood Brotherhood
Kesher, the Hebrew word for "connections" is also the name of a newly formed
TOL committee. This committee's goal is to strengthen connections among our
members and build a foundation that recognizes members life events,
milestones, simchas, contributions and volunteering. If you're interested in
learning more or helping the Kesher Committee reach out to David Polen at
[email protected] or 516 241 9892.
The Brotherhood will once again be
cooking and serving up our famous
latkes at the Big Nosh and we will
need help all day long to make the
magic happen!
Special thanks to al l those
Brotherhood members who helped
with the shed clean out and the
religious school lunch. Both events
were wildly successful and the efforts
of those who came are greatly
appreciated by our children, teachers,
staff, and clergy.
See you at the Big Nosh!
The Women of Reform Judaism (TOL
Sisterhood) celebrated a very successful
Women’s Seder, led by Rabbi Carolan
Glatstein. Over 40 ladies, including a good
number of daughters 12 and over were in
attendance.
It was a very meaningful experience for
all. With the rise of the “Me Too” move-
ment, women’s issues have come to the
forefront. Rabbi Carolan adapted the
Haggadah to emphasize the women’s role
in the Exodus story, and weave in the
challenges we still face. Amanda
Hamilton discussed the MORE Justice
movement, and Cheryl Nail gave a truly
frightening update on the prevalence of
sex trafficking in the Midlands and some
of the efforts to rescue the women (and
men!) who have been trafficked. A big
thanks to Rabbi Carolan for putting
together an extremely timely and relevant
event.
