Social Action Committee

Thank you for all of your donations of toys and gift cards at our Chanukah 4th Night Out collection for the Lend a Hand Project (formerly M’Yad L’Yad) – hundreds of gifts were collected and sent to children! The candy bar raffle helped to defray the cost of mailing the gifts.

Thank you for the donations towards Rabbi Buechler’s Legos for children in hospitals in Israel.

Our Books for Israel Project has sent 2000 books to schools in Israel already this year! Thank you for your continuing contributions of paperback books for children. The children in Israel appreciate these books!

We have partnered with the Suffolk Y JCC to assist with their new Kosher Food Pantry. We started filling their shelves with the 900 bags of food that we collected on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and have continued to fill their shelves with our SOUPER SUNDAY food collection. Thank you for your food contributions!

Helping our families and our community through learning CPR is vital, and with the support of the Dix Hills Fire Department we are able to provide the required training.

Bikur Cholim, visiting the sick, is our project where we make visits to the Gurwin Geriatric Nursing Nursing Home and the Fay Lindner Residences. Let us know if you would like to make the visits, and be trained as a Gurwin Volunteer.

We have many volunteer opportunities available in our community. If you have a special interest, contact us at [email protected]. Information in also available on the DHJC.org website.

With the support of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Board of the Synagogue, and the active hands-on support of Sisterhood and President Vicki Weinstein, and Men’s Club and President Brian Regenbogen, we have been able to expand our programs this year with new ideas, and financial support. Thank you!

On-going donations can be left in the bins in the lobby: paperback books for children, eyeglasses, cellphones, winter hats-gloves-scarves, and new socks.

Join us! We meet the first Sunday of each month at 10:00 am. [email protected] DHJCNEWS 3

Simcha shel Mitzvah is the classic Jewish paradigm which incorporates joy into every Jewish life whenever possible! In this month of

Adar, we celebrate the delight of Purim - and as this is a leap year in the Jewish calendar, the month that is doubled in a leap year is Adar as a salient reminder that JOY is central to Judaism.

The scroll of Esther (Megillah) that we read on Purim eve and Purim day (Wednesday evening, March 23 and Thursday, March 24) is the narrative of Jewish triumph in the face of overwhelming adversity. With the creative ingenuity of Esther and Mordechai, the evil forces of Haman are defeated in this fifth century BCE tale of intrigue centering on the Persian city of Shushan. The scroll delineates sources of hatred, intolerance and prejudice that have - and continue to be directed against our people and the State of Israel. In contrast, the heroism of Esther and Mordechai become templates of moral clarity in a world awash in hatred and injustice.

The joy of the Megillah encapsulates that cliche as to how we define Jewish holidays: they wanted to destroy us, we won, let’s eat! After the forces of Haman were decimated, Jewish life resumed with a gusto and joy.The tradition of sending mishloakhmanot, food baskets, including hamantashen, actualizes that we share joy and celebratory moments with food, faith, friends, and community.

The joy of DHJC is self-evident each Shabbat and holiday and through our dynamic events and programs and the embracing warmth of our community! Not a week goes by without joyous celebrations and wonderful events to which you are always welcomed. During this month of Adar I we salute and commend the remarkable accomplishments of well deserving leaders of our community at our annual Gala to be held on Saturday evening March 5. Join us as we celebrate the joyous gifts that Nina Sandler, Frank and Sharon Weissman and Pauline and Geoffrey Schwartz bring to our community as exemplars who inspire our community daily.

The joy of Shabbat March 4 and 5 brings to us Rabbi Ron Hoffberg, a leader of the Jewish community in Prague for the past fifteen years. Be enthralled by stories of Jewish life in this Mystical city and hear about the history of the Jews of Prague and the myths of the Golem as well!

This summer the joy of Israel and Jewish Europe beckons. Our Israel trip will take place from July 17 to 31 and our brochure is on line at dhjc.org. You are cordially invited to explore our heritage and the history and sites and majestic sights of Amsterdam, Prague and Budapest from August 28 through September 8. These three cities are gems of Jewish life and the heart and soul of art and European heritage. More details are on our web site!

Make sure that you partner with DHJC in our life long Jewish learning opportunities from classes to book reviews and films. Our Men’s Club and sisterhood offer dynamic programs and events which add joy to the menu

of Jewish life at your Jewish address, DHJC!

And with Purim celebrations around the corner including our annual Purim Pasta Party and carnival extravaganza, our Jewish Family Life committee is already planning new events for this spring and summer.

This has been a year of strength and growth as the Commack Jewish Center families have discovered the warmth embraceand tapestry of joy at their new home, DHJC .I encourage each of us, next time we are at DHJC to say shalom and warmly greet those you may now know. New members, new neighbors, and new friends at DHJC await you.

Above all, Passover is in the near future as we celebrate the simchashel mitzvah, the joy of Jewish identity that went through a prism of challenges in the ancient Egypt of the Pharaohs. We do not dwell on dark moments in Jewish history, we celebrate through time tested rituals, engaging conversations and delightful foods - all are recipe for powerful and meaningful Jewish moments shared in our homes.

Celebrate the joy of Judaism at DHJC!

Shalom, Rabbi Howard R. Buechler

Over the next few Newsletters I will be writing about Jewish Music. This article will be an introduction to the Music of the Synagogue.

The sounds and tones of music weave through Jewish life as a thread through a tapestry. This tapestry is rich and vibrant, much like Joseph’s coat of many colors. But instead of colors, we have tones and harmo-nies which can lift us up and raise our spiritual identity, helping to fill us with sweet sounds. We only have to listen, and let ourselves be carried away by these sweet sounds.

Jewish Music has been around for over 3,000 years. The most common and best known version of music is sung in the Synagogue by the Hazzan (Cantor). This is the music of Prayer, the chant of the Torah and the

Megilloth.Jewish music of the Synagogue spans the evolution of Cantorial, Synagogal, and Temple melodies since Biblical times. The earliest Synagogue music of which we have any account was based on the system used in the Temple in Jerusalem. The Mishnah gives several accounts of Temple music. According to the Mishnah, the regular Temple orchestra consisted of twelve instruments, and a choir of twelve male singers. The instruments included the kinnor (lyre), nevel (harp), shofar (ram’s horn), hozeirot (trumpet) and three varieties of pipe, the chalil, alamoth and the uggav. The Temple orchestra also included a cymbal (tziltzal) made of copper. The Talmud also mentions use in the Temple of a pipe organ (magrepha). No provable examples of the music played at the Temple have survived. Though there are vivid descriptions of the instruments utilized and the use of music. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD and the subsequent dispersion of the Jews to Babylon and Persia, versions of the public singing of the Temple were continued in the new institution of the Synagogue. Three musical forms were identified by scholars of the period, involving different modes of antiphonal response between Hazzan congregation: the Hazzan singing a half-verse at a time, with the congregation making a constant refrain; the Hazzan singing a half-verse, with the congregation repeating exactly what he had sung; and the Hazzan and congregation singing alternate verses. All of these forms can be discerned in parts of the modern syna-gogue service.

The Prayers are musically broken up into different Modes, these are referred to as Nusach. There are many different melodic forms of Nusach. Nusach (Hebrew: noi nosa, modern pronunciation nósakh or núsakh), plural nuschaot or nusachim, is a concept in Juda-ism that has two distinct meanings. One is the style of a prayer service (Nosach Teiman, Nusach Ashkenaz, Nusach Sefard or Nusach Ari); another is the melody of the service depending on when the service is being conducted.

These modes serve as a musical means to identify specific prayer services: Chol (Weekday) Shachrit; Minha; Ma’ariv. Shabbat Servic-es have different nuschaot – P’zukei D’zimrah; Shachirt; Torah Service; Musaf. Also Minha for Shabbat has its own specific nusach. There are three main modes. The three main modes are called Ahavah Rabbah, Magein Avot and Adoshem Malach. Tradition-ally, the Hazzan improvises sung prayers within the designated mode, while following a general structure of how each prayer should sound. Over time many of these chants have been written down and standardized, yet the practice of improvisation still exists to this day.

The Ahavah Rabbah mode (also referred to as freygish) - is named after the blessing that immediately precedes the Sh’ma in the morning service. Musically, Ahavah Rabbah is considered to be the most Jewish sounding of all the prayer modes, because of the interval of an augmented second, contained between its second and third scale degrees. The Magein Avot (Shield of our Fathers) mode takes its name from a paragraph in the prayer of the same, which follows the Amidah in the Friday evening service. Musically, it most closely resembles a minor scale from the Western classical music. It is used in simple davening, or prayer chant, of-ten by means of a single recitation tone, which the Hazzan utilizes to cover a large amount of liturgical text in a quickly-flowing style. The Adoshem Malach (G-d Reigns) mode consists of a major scale with a lowered (minor) seventh and tenth. This mode has a majes-tic feel to it and is used for a number of services that require a grand atmosphere. In modern times there has been an emergence of modern melodies composed by Contemporary Hazzanim and Jewish song writers that have made their way into the Synagogue service. Writers like Debbie Friedman; Craig Taubman; Rick Recht; Hazzan Sol Zim; Hazzan Meir Finkelstein; Hazzan Avi Albrecht; and many others. Most of the new melodies stay true to the Nusach melodic forms, while others go in a different musical direction. This does not make those melodies wrong. Instead these newer melodic forms (i.e.: Debbie Friedman’s MiSheberach) add a contemporary sound and style to Modern Synagogue Music.

Look for my next article where I shall introduce Ladino Music.

Dear Congregants,

A lot is happening in our Hebrew School. We are really trying to keep the children interested and challenged. To achieve that, we need to offer a lot of different programs and happenings.

All classes are visiting the JCC museum where each year Bat Sheva creates a hands-on program for the children. This year the topic was: Settlements on Long Island. Thereare different exhibits and activities which are suitable for all ages and even we, the teachers, had much to study.

Tikkun Olam was and is a very important component in our school. An ongoing Tikkun Olam which is already in its third year is a Kabbalat ShabbatService. Each class does this service two times a year with the residents of Sunrise Assisted Living in Dix Hills. The children and the residents are having a beautiful time together. This is one of the ways to teach the children how rewarding “Giving” is.

Our other Tikkun Olam project is a yearly Tzedakah project. Each class chose something that talks to them and are studying and working on it for the whole year. Alef and Bet classes adopted a woman through Yad B’Yad. They wrote her letters, drew pictures and sent her gift cards. Gimel classes are collecting food for the Food Pantry in the JCC, where people in need can go and pick up food they need. Dalet students chose to collect money for Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind. A few days ago they had a visit from the Educational Director of “Help Make Miracles Happen” that came to tell the children about this organization. He brought a training dog with him, shared information and videos and answered the children’s questions. The class gave him a few checks that parents contributed, and what the children collected. Our Hay class collected food, toys, etc., for a dog shelter. The director of the shelter and two dogs came for a visit. Another Hay class hasa big box with items for the Wild Life Organization. Vav classes adopted the Center for Lone Soldiers in Jerusalem. They became involved through a congregant. The class wrote letters and sent checks.

The students are very involved in their Tzedakah projects and hopefully they will adopt one of them for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah Tzedakah project. We are having class mid-year presentations of their projects and will conclude with an end of year Tzedakah event.

In our ongoing yearly learning Jewish Symbols we study about: Magen David, Mezuzah and Tefillin. We do it as part of our Rosh Chodesh celebration. Each month the children study with me a symbol and make an art work (if we can). Our next one will be Tallit and so on.

This month we are finishing our class services. Each class has two services for the year, and after the Dalet Friday Night service and the Zayin and Vav Shabbat morning Services, we will haveleft the Gimel end of year Friday Night service. The students lead much of the service and it is a wonderful preparation for them as participants in the synagogue services.

We celebrated Tu B’Shevat in the classes, creating trees with a meaningful topic. Each class created a tree which were displayed the in the upstairs foyer. Kol Hakavod for creating such beautiful trees. We had a Family Education program where we studied together about Tu B’shevat, planting and playing. Fun!

Welcome to our two new students who joined last week

All the best, Ricky

PRESIDENTS MESSAGEJust Ask the President

At the Dix Hills Jewish Center if you ask for it , It will come. We are your community and want to be more than a Beit Tefillah, a Beit Midrash and a Beit Knesset to all our members. We want a to be a place you can call HOME.

Members wanted Dance Lessons. Now we are starting our second session and have more than 15 couples participants.

Under the Guidance of Men’s Club to celebrate Hanukkah a Vodkas and Lakes night was held. We had over 125 members in attendance. Super Bowl a national holiday, well a big screen was set up in the ball room with plenty to eat and over 150 members watched together.

For some of you theater is your passion. Well Hazack is sponsoring a trip to see Broadway’s newest production of Fiddler on the Roof. Over 100 members are pre-registered and of course there’s lunch.

If you prefer travel join the Rabbi on his Jewish Journeys with DHJC 2016 July 17 - 31 2016 Israel Trip or August 28th - Sept. 8th 2016 Europe Trip to Amsterdam, Prague & Budapest.

Community Service can be rewarding. Sisterhood volunteered at the Lindner Residence at Gurwin at their Tu B’Shevat Seder.

And programming can be fun too! Pieces of Energy, Wimple Making and Miriam’s Cup participatory events and all walk away with a keepsake.

Here at DHJC there is something for everyone. And if you don’t see something that spurs your interest just ask!

Michael

BDS, Anti-Semitism both very powerful words.

We as community are committed to educate you and your children how to combat the rising threats to all of us in the United States and the World around us.

DHJC along with South Huntington Jewish Center and Temple Beth Torah has joined forces and undertaken an initiative along with other Jewish Organizations to help us understand and combat anti-Israel sentiments found not just on our college campuses but in our communities as well.

We have had Three very successful programs since August at each the our three respective synagogues. But we need your help. What we need is your attendance and participation. It is equally important for us not only to encourage our children to attend but us as parents and grandparents as well.

Jewish people everywhere are being threatened just not in Israel. We have been taking an active role and will continue to do so.

Please join us!

Michael
