What’s Up at KNUXX?

Hey there, what’s up? I can’t believe that an entire month has passed since our fi rst issue of KNUXX hit over 100 racks in New Mexico. So many things have happened and we’ve seen “just how deep the rabbit hole goes” in the New Mexico fi ght community. It seems that every time we attend one event we get information on two more. It’s just a sign of how great it is that we’re attempting to bring some unity, communi-cation and structure to this community.

With that in mind, you will notice some really positive additions to this issue – namely the “Fight Card”, Event Calendar, four more pages, and some great new writers.

The “Fight Card” is our business directory which lists all the shops, stores, gyms & busi-nesses that support this community. Check here when you want to know where to fi nd some great clothing & fi ght gear, watch a pay-per-view event, or fi nd a training gym. We want this to be the most up-to-date directory in print for New Mexico fi ghters and fans. Many of these businesses have also chosen to advertise in KNUXX - give these guys your support as they support all us.

Take a look at page two and you will see our fi rst stab at the structure and information we alluded to earlier in the form of our Event Calendar. Here you will fi nd all upcoming fi ght

sports – both live and televised. You will see that events are coded by genre (boxing, kick-boxing, MMA, televised, etc.) and that it is free to list any events you have coming up.

Finally we would like to thank our advertisers and new writers. The feedback we’ve received has been tremendous but two things kept com-ing back to us – more content and more pages. We’ve accomplished this by getting some awe-some support from some great freelance writ-ers – Trula Howe & Chewy Saenz – both well known folks in the New Mexico fi ght scene.

Let us know what you think – and we’ll keep punching!

The Whey to Go

As spring arises the weather is starting to get a bit warmer and I am seeing the honey’s already pull out the shorts...OMG, Thank You Lord for all you do!!! But I am always asked just how to take off fat quickly while hardening up. So whether your a male or female what’s the secret I am asked... “WHEY ISOLATE” Yes, whey protein and specifi cally whey isolate. Ok here comes the science... ready... Whey protein promotes fat loss by enhancing the release of glucagon. Glucagon stimulates the breakdown of glyco-gen stored in the liver. When the blood glucose levels are high, the liver takes up large amounts of glucose. Under the infl uence of insulin, this glucose is stored as glycogen. Glucagon activates hepatic gluconeogenesis. This is the pathway by which amino acids are converted to glucose. A higher dose of whey will result in lower insulin/glucagon ratio indicative of increased fat oxidation...HUH!?! Well basically whey protein is just plain theromgenic. It is rapidly digested and ab-sorbed which increases metabolism. The body will utilize it better than carbohydrates or fats resulting in energetic effi ciency and increased thermogenesis. Increases in protein can acceler-

ate weight loss as well as cause changes to body fat while increasing muscle mass. Increases in whey protein can increase energy expenditure while infl uencing appetite control. Wow, this stuff is amazing. So when do we use it? The best time is when blood sugar is low. For the person look-ing to increase muscle mass, consumption of whey protein fi rst thing upon rising will raise blood sugar while setting you up for anabolism. Now you are ready to have breakfast. The second best time would be right after training. Your blood sugar is again low and the need to raise insulin for anabolic response is vital for recovery. So immediately after your done con-sume at least 20-30g whey to begin the anabolic environment needed to recovery. So there you have it, the best known secret to fat loss. Simply replace at least one meal with a whey protein shake while changing the balance of your food intake and watch your body take on a new and enhanced look. Que Loco Cagefi ghting –“UNPREDICTABLE” –

April 30, 2011, Los Lunas, NM.

The noise at Daniel Fernandez Youth Center belied the numbers of the crowd, as each and every voice screamed for their favorite fi ghter, in the main event of Que Loco Cagefi ghting – UNPREDICTABLE, on April 30, 2011. Dominic “Fallen Angel” Maldonado, Que Loco and KOTC fi ghter, met Mike “Bulldog” Espinosa, LA Boxing, in the ring for the prestige of the Que Loco Heavyweight Title Belt. The gymnasium roared with cheers, making it sound more like 2000 instead of the 300+ in attendance.Maldonado and Espinosa immediately went to work, once that bell rang, evenly trading body shots and leg kicks, with few clean head shots. Toward the end of the fi rst round, Espinosa had Maldonado in a stand-ing guillotine that seemed tight enough to put him to sleep, but Maldonado managed to twist out of it. The second round went much differently, with Maldonado landing several heavy combos on Espinosa, eventu-ally driving him to the mat, and after sev-eral seconds of punishment, the ref called a stop to the fi ght, giving Maldonado the win by TKO, at 2:49.

Henry Adame, of J5 MMA in Grants, met Philip Perez of Perez Fighting Systems for the Que Loco 135 Belt. Adame took the belt with a triangle choke in the fi rst round, to the great joy of his family and friends, who eagerly ran to the ring to take pictures. Adame will be competing on the amateur card for King of the Cage – Fight to Live, on Saturday, May 14, at Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino.

Brandon Trujillo defeated Ray Vaiz at 2:14 in the2nd round by rear naked choke. Derek Perez defeated Marcel Jar-emko by arm bar in 1:52 of the fi rst round. Steve Baca, current Que Loco 145 champi-on, was unable to compete, as his opponent backed out of the fi ght last minute. The event began with the assembly of all fi ght-ers in the ring, followed by several single-round wrestling matches by youngsters anxious to test their wrestling skills against outside opponents. Each of these rounds ended in a draw, which, in Que Loco, meant that both won, having their hands raised in victory.Several other matches were sched-uled for the day, but these were cancelled due to lack of proper background paper-work and bloodwork completion.

Que Loco Cagefi ghting is an ama-teur fi ghting organization, founded for the primary purpose of giving local youth a positive, athletic outlet, as well as an open-ing into the very prevalent sport of MMA in New Mexico. Shining the spotlight on talent from local gyms, these events are often scouted by larger organizations, giving these young folks even greater opportuni-ties to excel. QLC is funded by sponsorship from local businesses such as Valley Tattoo, Baskin Robbins, Al’s Upholstery, Absolute Throwdown Fightshop, and OTM Fight-shop, as well as several others.

a First-Person Commentary by Adam “Chewy” SaenzUptown Sports Bar & Grill

Pay-Per-View EventSaturday, April 30th, 2011

Uptown was roaring loudly and the atmosphere was growing with anticipation of the main event. The house was becoming more packed with eager fans every second. Myself and the crew from “On The Mic with Mike Adams”, were doing a live remote at Uptown Sports Bar & Grill, covering UFC 129-Georges St. Pierre (GSP) versus Jake Shields.

The fi rst live prelim started the night as “The Juggernaut” Jake Ellenberger took on Sean Pierson. Round one started with both opponents taking their time to size each other up. Ellen-berger initiated a takedown but within seconds Pierson was on his feet. Ellenberger lands a rights cross that shakes Pierson, he desperately clinched shortly after. Ellenberger lands a big hook that turns off Pierson’s lights and fi nishes with punches, Ellenberger scoring a TKO 2:22 in the fi rst.

Cesar Gracie-trained Nate Diaz verses Canadian native Rory MacDonald was the next fi ght. In all 3 rounds it was a one sided battle, MacDon-ald being able to control and overwhelm Diaz - maybe even convincing Diaz to reclaim a home in the lightweight division – none-the-less, the impressive 21 year old, Rory MacDonald, im-proves to 11-1.

The pay-per-view drew a short intermission as the spectators made their predictions on the upcoming fi ghts with the VJ for the night, Mike Adams. UFC contender Mark Bocek and For-mer WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson stood center stage awaiting instruction. As they faced off, the tension between them was visible. In round one, Henderson was getting the best of the exchanges on the feet - landing punches and crisp combinations with which Bocek was having a tough time dealing, knowing that he was doing everything he could to turn it into a ground fi ght. Over the course of three rounds, several submission attempts and reversals later, Henderson, stole every round gaining a unani-mous decision - putting him at the top tier of the lightweight division.

With the crowd favorite winning, Uptown was in high spirits as Machida and Couture began to make their way down to the octagon. Mike worked the crowd, getting the picks for this intriguing match and it seemed that the fans were split into a dead 50/50 draw. In the open-ing round, Machida sticks to the outside waiting for “The Natural” to press the action. As Randy tries to close the gaps, Machida sticks him with punches that keep him at bay; but the differ-ence in speed was clear. As the end of the round drew near Randy clinched the elusive “Dragon” but he slipped out with ease. The round ended 10-9 in Machida’s favor.

As the cameras found the fi ghter’s corners, both fi ghters looked calm and the closer you looked at Randy’s corner you got the sense that a pos-sible new strategy was coming to light. But not even a fi ghter of Randy’s mettle could prepare him for what the second round had in store. Moments in, Machida lands a front kick at 1:05

that KO’s Couture - retiring the legend. The crowd was in awe of the big highlight fi nish (with all the praise to Martial Arts expert Steven Siegal) and the upmost seriousness for tech-nique that was sending waves into the MMA world.

Next in the line up was the old lion Vladimir Matyushenko against tough wrestler Jason Brilz. It seemed that Brilz had the style to neutralize “The Janitor”. With the fi rst big ex-change, Brilz seemed out of his element. Then Matyushenko connected with a combo that sent Brilz into the canvas. He fi nished with a few punches to seal the deal - all were in disbelief with a TKO in only 20 seconds!

The fi rst of two championship bouts were underway. The crowd quieted with all focus on the big screen as the challenger for the feather-weight title, Mark Hominick, waited anxiously for the Team Black House-member Jose Aldo, the current champion. The fi rst three rounds of the fi ve round battle were back and forth. Aldo countering accurately with punches and scoring with leg kicks. Hominick was never discour-aged. Late in the fourth round Aldo landed a massive elbow on the right part of Homi-nick’s forehead that turned into a hematoma that stopped the fi ght and required the doctor’s attention. The fi ght continued. Bruised and battered Hominick pushed the pace. In the fi fth and fi nal round the champ slowed down and Hominick got him in his guard. With less than two minutes on the clock, Hominick started to throw a fl urry of punches with the hope of fi nishing the fi ght. Even with this desperate at-tempt, Aldo’s defense stole a lot of the fi re from the blows and won a unanimous decision.

Quick Countby Herb Jones

Question and Answer with Johnny Tapia and Frankie Archuleta. Each fi ghter was asked the same fi ve questions and were asked to give short, to the point, responses.

Question 1 - What do you feel you represent as a fi ghter today?

Question 2 – In the six years since your last bout together, how hungry have you been

for this rematch?

Question 3 – If not by a knockout or unani-mous decision, how would you feel with a

split decision victory?

Question 4 – Both of you fi ghters are older boxers now (Tapia – 44, Archuleta – 35), are you training differently now because of this

than you have in the past?

Question 5 – What would you like to say to your opponent?

“Frankie in my prime – making myself the greatest boxer I can possibly be for this fi ght against Johnny.”

“Real hungry. I won the fi rst fi ght. The second fi ght was close and I feel he stole some of the rounds (and the crowd), this is the rubber match, it’s ‘Big Time’ and VERY important to me.”

“This is a Team Tapia promotion, they control everything. If it goes the distance and the judges are professional – I’m okay with that.”

“Yes. I’m more dedicated to being in the gym and pushing myself to the limit but also smarter about tactics and techniques than when I was younger.”

“Johnny, I respect you a lot, both inside and outside the ring, we were both talking trash in the press conference to each other – but I’m going to take it to you!”

“A person that can fall down and pick himself up and succeed”

“Very hungry”

“It’s not going to happen!”

“Older, wiser, and defi nitely stronger.”

“Get ready and be ready”

UFC 129 - continued from page 5

Finally the main event arrived. The energy in Uptown wass electric; everyone was on the edge of their seat. Mike made his way through the bar and got the last picks for the fi ght. GSP’s presence, and local connection, was strongly felt and only a handful of people gave Jake Shields a shot. Before you knew it, the fi rst bell sounded to start the main event. The champion, GSP, stood sturdy in the center of the octagon trading punches and kicks. Surprising-ly neither GSP nor Jake Shields had attempted any take downs. The war waged on. Neither fi ghter took control but GSP had three rounds won convincingly as they entered the cham-pionship rounds. GSP had accumulated dam-age to his nose and his left eye (he made later statements to his corner that he couldn’t see). Still game, Jake Shields, welcomed punches and kicks for the opportunity to turn the fi ght around. It seemed he had the fourth round won and pushed the pace in the fi fth, but it was no shock when they announced the winner, and still champion, Georges St. Pierre.

Regardless the performance, all that were in attendance knew they witnessed something spe-cial - the rise of new stars, old favorites stand-ing their ground, fan favorites expanded their horizons, and champions added more legitima-cy to their reign.
