Neighbourhood Management

Football Training has started at Newquay Rd Playing fields.No one could have predicted the fantastic turnout for the first session this June. 49 children between the ages of 4 and 15 years old registered. Most were accompanied by their parents, even though the weather let us down. The heavy downpour half way through the session didn’t stop them either! It was a brilliant turnout, with all the children showing lots of enthusiasm, interest and respect for everyone. Someone even turned up offering sponsorship! For times see Pg 12. 95 have now registered.

The football coach is a local man (ex Bristol City player) Colston Gwyther who was ‘chuffed to bits’ and thanked the parents for their help - very much appreciated! Comments included: “About time there was something for this age here.” “I think it’s brilliant, just what the kids want.” “My son can’t wait till the next training.” “Let’s hope it keeps going, this keeps the kids off the streets hanging around.” “Fantastic support from the parents.”

The benefits of change: more than loose change

local resident My Mum, Rose Manning, started to volunteer when my brother started preschool - he is 38 this year! From there she has volunteered at scout groups, BP youth club, KWADs, Rework, CIP, chair of the Crest family practice patient group, campaigned against Filwood playing fields being sold and is currently the chair of KW Health Park CIC - along with others.She has taken on employment tribunals (and won) for local organisations unable to afford legal assistance, assisted family, friends and neighbours on legal issues and helping them complete forms and compile letters. Mum is constantly striving to improve the local area - mum works tirelessly to solve problems, often working late nights and weekends. I am still amazed at the amount of things she can do (owing to her medical disadvantages) and yet she never complains when she has an “off” day - she battles on and gets the job done. I am very honoured that mum has been awarded an OBE and I am proud she is my mum.

We met the Queen at a reception for Voluntary Services, we also met a lot of interesting people, with great stories to tell.The Palace was stunning and the Royals very welcoming. UNDERSTANDING CULTURES

Recently Florence Brown Community School had the chance to play host to a fellow teacher from Kenya, as part of the Global School Partnerships. This was to enhance the teaching and learning of our students with regard to healthy eating, global diversity and environmental issues. The students had the opportunity to listen to stories about Kenya, ask questions, discuss issues of interest and begin to understand other cultures first hand. Dark Angel, age 17

The Dark Angels from the Park here in Knowle, won the World Hip Hop Championships this year.

We went to America in April 2008 to compete in the Future Cheer World Hip Hop dance competition. It was held at Epcot in Disney Orlando.We competed last year and came 5th in the world, so this year we were hoping to be in the top 3, but we won.

Going back to America this year was an awesome experience, something I’m sure none of the Angels or myself will ever forget.

The holiday itself I think really brought the group closer together than we already were, we all had the same goal, to win! (oh and get the platinum and sapphire rings, the 1st place winners’ prize). For some of the newer members it also really helped them get to know the “older lot”.

When we went out for meals as a group, it was quite funny to see the look on the waitress’ face when we told them that there would be 32.

The competition was the highlight for me, obviously.

The pure adrenalin rush that pumped through me as I heard the music start, and then when they announced the winners, us! Now that is something that I’ll most definitely remember for the rest of my life.

Charlie Bedford leads, choreographs and dances with the team of 20. The group is headlining at the Harbour festival on the floating stage, 3rd and 4th August.

CARBON MAKEOVER resident/KWMC employee Every week there is something new and exciting going on with the Carbon Makeover, and right now we need help from everyone in the community to make the project an even bigger success. Read on for more details of how you can help…..

A group of local residents, headed up by Carbon Makeover campaigners Sue & Erica, aim to make Knowle West completely plastic bag free. The group started up because of concerns about the environmental effects of plastic bags; harming wildlife and contributing to litter in the area.

‘Team FAB’ are making eco-friendly bags out of recycled materials for local shops to give to shoppers. They hope to make enough bags, so that all KW homes can have one.

Three local young people, Sam, Jazmine and Daniel, have also been involved, campaigning with local shoppers and shopkeepers.

If you would like to make your own bag, and contribute to KW going plastic bag free, please

come along to St Barnabas Church on Daventry Road, every Monday 12-3pm. There is also an evening session from 6-9pm on the first Tuesday of every month. For more info contact Maddie Stanley at KWMC: 0117 9030 444maddie@kwmc.org.uk

By autumn you might be thinking that it’s too late to grow anything. Wrong! Autumn is actually the beginning of the gardening year...

You can sow (and grow) salads from now until September; try radish, lettuce, salad leaves and spring onions. For baby carrots in late autumn, sow a maincrop variety in July. Spring greens can be sown now, try cabbage “April”. You can even sow a first early pea to harvest in October (try “Feltham First” or “Kelvedon Wonder”).

Keep an eye on thirsty crops - marrow, tomatoes, pumpkins, etc - don’t forget to feed and water well during dry spells. Why not harvest rainwater and store in your green-house, that way it will be warm and not chill any tender plants you water.

Head Gardener’s Tip -Remember, lettuce seeds will not germinate if temperatures are above 20c (70f ); if you want to grow lettuce during a hot spell, refridgerate the seed overnight before sowing.

Neighbourhood Arts Officer

Hi I’m Tana Holmes, the new Neighborhood Arts Officer for South Bristol. My role involves working with arts organisations, individuals and community groups to develop arts projects. ‘Arts’ means everything from painting to photography, animation to advertising, sculpture to sound, dance to design and anything in between!

Currently I’m looking for local artists or art groups who might be interested in exhibiting their work around the area. Small bursaries are available for artists to present their work.

Also ‘stART up’ is looking for South Bristol artists to exhibit work in venues around South Bristol. Small bursary’s are available to artists to support with getting work ready for exhibition.

Ilminster Avenue Specialist NurseryThe rank of shops at Newquay Road has been brightened by a colourful mural which has been created by parents, carers, staff and children from three schools in the area as part of an educational scheme: “Language for Learning Project” based at Ilminster Ave Nursery & Primary School and Hengrove Community Arts College.The mural, which depicts “How we Learn”, is the culmination of the current phase of the scheme, funded by the Extended Schools Partnership, to raise aspirations in this community by engaging parents in their child’s learning. Community in Partnership have helped to clear the land in front of it to plant seedlings and fruit trees, making the area more attractive.

Travelling artist, Beth Hamer, has helped local gardener, Mil Lusk to create a portable garden shed. The Bike Shed, is designed to support Mil in her community garden work. It was made to measure, built using re-claimed materials, mounted on to a purpose hand-built tri-cycle.

Beth is currently living and working throughout the UK and Europe, and her artworks are designed to inspire and assist people to take small steps to live more sustainably and ecologically in an urban area. She is interested in low-cost, low-tech, resourceful ways of presenting art. The Bike Shed was part of her ten day residency at Knowle West Media Centre. The Bike Shed launches in early Aug. Project XProject X has been changing over the last few months and now has two clear and separate functions, hopefully this article will explain these for you, but if you have any questions feel free to contact us.

The work of the project team (Julia, Mel and Paul), is focused on intensive work with families and young people. This role includes some of the following:

Advocating for the families • we are working with.

Providing access to positive • activities after school (such as REVVS - motor mechanics course, Fireskills, and animal care group) and during school holidays.

Supporting families during • difficult times (such as following a loss, or issues at home) and strengthening family involvement (Triple P, family events).

Supporting schools and • young people having difficulties in school (e.g. support when changing school).

Support with issues relating • to anti-social behaviour, growing-up and the pressures

that can influence young people.

Providing opportunities • to be more involved in community activities (e.g. our Community Space Challenge to develop local green spaces).

As a team we also support multi-agency working and administer a weekly panel for the area where agencies come together with parents/carers and young people.

The aim of these panels is to ensure that young people and families work with the agencies to get the best possible services as quickly as possible, and that the family and young person has a named main contact person to talk to.

Changes at ProjeCt XAlistair Dale

Nine young people have had the opportunity to learn all about animals in a group run by Project X and Animal Outreach at The Park.The sessions ran for seven weeks and the group learnt to feed and water the animals, to check their health, clean their habitat and handle them properly. The animals they worked with ranged from lizards and snakes to chipmunks and chickens!

GOOD NEWS The building work is close to completion and we are busy moving in. We’ve been pleased to welcome new families to our groups who have read about us in the previous newsletters.

MOVING ON At this time of year many children are preparing to say goodbye to their old Nurseries and Playgroups ready to start new Schools in September.

The Knowle Early Years Network is running a project with local schools and Nurseries who are working closely together to make sure this is a positive and exciting time for children and families. At Footprints our children have visited their new schools with their key worker. At Knowle Park Infants the children met “Opel” the horse and played in their new classrooms.

We want to find out what local parents/carers think about how Schools/Nurseries introduce new children and families to their setting. What worked well? How could this be improved?

local developer, local rootsAs a lot of you will have noticed, the old Venture Inn on MelvIn Square was demolished last year and construction work is being carried out to replace the old pub with 24 brand new apartments. The new building will be called Carpenters Place after my Grandfather, George Carpenter, who (in his day) used to drink in the Venture.

The developers are Luke Hasell, Marcus Hasell, Chris Linegar, and myself, and our company is called Eminence Property Developments Ltd. This is the second development in Knowle West undertaken by us. Earlier this year we completed a 2 storey building on Hartcliffe Road comprising of 8 one-bed apartments. This development is called Gospel Gardens and in the same way as Carpenters Place will be, is a very unique building with an overall modern, contemporary finish. We are very excited about the planned regeneration of the local area, and thrilled to be able to play such a big part towards giving Knowle West that urban contemporary edge to help the area on its way to catch up with the rest of Bristol.

My family originate from Knowle West and I think it’s sad that the area seems to be overlooked when the rest of Bristol is fast becoming such a wonderfully cosmopolitan city. With the plans that the local council have for the regeneration of South Bristol, coupled with the positive influences that local groups, such as the Media Centre and the Knowle West Web Site have on the area, it’s only a matter of time before all the positive elements of the area

become more evident to everyone.

It’s very true that the area suffers from an image problem but when you spend some time here you realise that there really is a community spirit that is quite inspiring.

When all of your grand parents and parents were raised in an area and had so many happy years there, it’s nice to give something back.

• Carpenters Place is due for completion at the end of 2008. The development comprises 21 one-bed apartments and 3 two-bed apartments. PLANS IN THE AREA

Bristol City Council As residents may be aware, land at Filwood Park (red area in map left), previously owned by Bristol City Council, has now been sold to English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency.

The City Council will continue to manage the land until the future of the site is decided, as part of wider plans for the regeneration of Knowle West. There are no proposals for the land at the moment, and the local community will be consulted on the future use of the site.

Mouth of the South Written by young people for young people

We went to the Amazing Archive Exhibition Preview called ‘Back In the Day” on June 24th. We listened and saw some videos and pictures. The exhibition was brilliant and we couldn’t believe how good it was. We had great fun and we saw ‘the hat’ (an old hat in glass units), it was amazing. We were shocked to see how good it was and how much hard work went into it. We would definately like to come to another exhibition at Knowle West Media Centre.

I have also made new friends and learned new skills!”• ‘Back in The Day’ is a young person led multi-media exhibition about Knowle West in South Bristol supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, that brings together photography, illustration, sound and animation work. local young people, aged 12 and 8 We went to Filwood for the funday (which was run by Carmel Cafe) They had a big bouncy castle and it was free entry.

They had the kids club which triggered off the day then they had a barbeque. On the barbeque there was a meal deal, which was a burger or a Hotdog and a can of drink for £2.50. It was FUN! The photo will be on our website.Serena & Amy

I was invited to a premier screening of 3 environmental films, commissioned by South West Screen and the Community Channel, at Knowle West Media Centre in June. I think that Wild West Going Green (made by KWMC) was amazing.The second film Deadly, Silent Cargo was absolutely brilliant but I would have liked to see more colour and a lot more people talking about what they were going to do to help the environment. The Dark Green film was also good.
