Sgt. Jerry Corsaro Hears Nazi Quit

Sgt. Je r ry Corsaro, radio operator w ith a C ava lry Reconnaissance Group in the European Theatre, intercepted a message from the Nazi commander at

• Brest, on September 18, 1944, in which the Germ an asked for a truce to discuss the surrender of

'that sector. W ord of Corsaro’s part in the story has just been re ceived here by the sergeant’s wife, the form er Alice Waldeck of 632 Third street. The couple are parents of a son, Jeft-y, Jr ., who is two and a half years old.

In his letter to his wife, Sgt. Corsaro enclosed a copy of the Nazi’s message. It follows:

“ To Am erican forces on Cro- zon Peninsula: Request trucewest of Lanion. Polyzone Line at 0900 German summer time to negotiate on Brest sector. Brest gar rison.”

Sgt. Corsaro wrote that he had answered the message and then took it to his commanding officer who, in turn, relayed it to head- quarters. A few days later, thf Germans gave up in the Brest sector.

W h ile on the Crozon Peninsul? Sgt. Corsaro’s troop picked up ! police dog belonging to Genera1 Rempke, Nazi pommander at Brett.

on m ail from the ETO , Sgt. Corsaro wrote his w ife a detailed account of his experiences since he left the States in February, 1944 He ohad sailed on the" Queen M ary,” a rriving in- England on March 7th. He remained there un til a few weeks after the invasion of the continent. He was then sent to Cherbourg, which he said was still burning from the air raids. Later he- took part in the battle for Brest. He said his own troop had taken more prisoners than any other in the squadron.

Corsaro served on the St. Na- zaire sector at Bordeaux and then at Lorient. He moved on to B e lgium and Holland, across the Ruhr and Rhine Rivers, crossing the latter one day after the 9th Arm y had gone over. He was

strafed by German planes desperately trying to halt the flow of American power over the river.

Sgt. Corsaro entered service on January 6, 1942. Under the army point system, he has a total of 86 points.

Softball'continued in fnH sway last wrok. with several postponed games being; played. The bifs affair between the American Legion and the Lyndhurst Ker turned (fut to btf u rout, with the Legion whitewashing the Rec. 1« to 0. Joe t ipolla gave up quite a few walks but war- stingy with hits, for he parted with only 2 bingles during the course of the contest. |Last yea r’s charrfjps\also played good ball in the Bela in winning their fourth straight game.

M erk in and Lehfrtann h a d themselves a tim e in th e ir 'p la y off game Wednesday night. The machinists went right to work in their half of the first, pushing across 3 tallies, but M erk in tied it in the second. The lead changed hands again in the fifth and sixth innings, but Lehmann scored 2 in the last of the sixth, to take a w ild and wooly contest by 9-7

Tow n Tavern, since losing the opener to the Legion, has been mowing down the opposition steadily since. They tangled with Dechert's Demons Monday night and walked off w ith a G to 2 ve rdict. Shabs pitched a fine game in ra ik in g up his third w in of the season as the Mvn of M olloy collected thirteen I hits against 6 for the losers.

Games ate attracting rtcw spectators nightly, and have been conducted in a better manner than these eyes have seen for iome time. There are many die- hards in town who have repeatedly said, “ It can ’t Le done here," year after year. W e can say, w ith emphasis, the league has really come a long way. The boys •re out on time each night and the teams on the bottom are right there when game time is called by the umpire of the evening: T h e w ide open game played has made for a better a ll around

Brothers Nabbed by Bill Geary

Two brothers, residents of th(s township, were arrested Sunday by Capt W illiam Geary, and held for investigation. One of the mefi has beenj.identificd as being a soldier, absent w ithout leave from the arm y since January, 1944. Charges were made of carry ing

. concealed weapons and driving without a license against the other brother.

Antonio Petri Ho, 23, of 60 Lake avenue, was said to be the soldier who deserted from the army. Capt. Gjeary is already in communication with army authorities. The other brother, V irg il, 29. was held on a charge of carrying

' conc<|aled weapons and driving * without a ‘license.! » Capt. Geary had noticed the men d riving throughout the.town and after watching them for some time, stepped their car and asked to see their license. When the men wore unable to produce' any, they were ordered to drive to headquarters.

A search of the ir car revealed a cue-stick, loaded with lead, and a motley assortment of tools under the car seat. The men, whc professed small knowledge of the English language were unable to aff«*r a satisfactory explanation for possession of the articles. The ue-stick presumably could be

used as a billy.

L a te r he was sent to a prison camp. When the Americans began the big drive into Germany, he and other prisoners had to march 120 miles into the interior. Incidentally, the black bread and soup diet continued for the fu ll four months he was a prisoner. The same was the diet for a ll the prisoners.
