This is a book all about knitting for boys. It is a collectionof classic designs with a modern edge here and awhimsical touch there. The designs are geared for

those knitting for boys ages four to twelve, a charming spotbetween baby and teenager, but the extras in this bookmake it a must-have for anyone who knits for children. Thegoal of this collection is to blow our little men away withdesigns that are created just for them.

Every child is unique and has his own style and prefer-ences, and the various designs and options in this bookgive you plenty of ways to create knits your boys will wantto wear. The projects range from sweaters to caps to acces-sories like suspenders and a belt. They are stylish and mod-ern, boyish but grown up enough for pre-teens. Colorchoices range from happy brights to bold neutrals. Thesecolor options, matched with a fresh take on cables and col-orwork, set a new timeless standard on what boys willreally want to wear. Beginning knitters will find plenty ofprojects to choose from to get their feet wet, but knitters atall experience levels will find entertainment and challengeamong the variety of projects and options. Follow the fourbasic steps below to customize knits just right for the boysin your life.

Step One

FLATTER THEM WITH FITThe one problem with knitting for children is how quicklythey grow out of your knits. It’s a challenge to make knitsthat will fit for two to three seasons while looking good ineach. This book features a “Grow-with-Me” theme to makeyour knits wearable for more than one year, and includes areference section that discusses children’s growth patterns.I then use that growth-pattern information to present practical strategies for project planning to help you ensureyour child gets more wear out of each knitted garment.This section walks knitters through a little necessary mathto make adjustments in patterns and explains howschematics are to be interpreted. The accompanying Grow-with-Me section of patterns includes designs with featuresthat have already made sleeve and hem length adjustablein a variety of ways.

Step Two

TEMPT THEM WITH TEXTURE

Whether it’s cabling or simply a combination of knits andpurls, texture adds intrigue and depth. One of my sons isparticularly tactile and his favorite thing about my knittingprojects is touching them. He loves the feel of his cabledsweater. The Touch-Me Texture designs are also for the clas-sically inclined—textural knits are unendingly stylish. Thesedesigns also grow up very well; knitters will be tempted tosize them up for an older child (or, ahem, themselves) orperhaps to make daddy a matching sweater.

Step Three

CAPTIVATE THEM WITH COLORMy oldest son loves colors, patterns, and any combinationthereof. The designs in the Color Collection are adventur-ous and range from cute to quirky. They include strandedcolorwork, intarsia motifs that are playful yet grown upenough for tweens, striping, and tastefully contrasting cuffsand hems.

Step Four

OFFER THEM OPTIONSThe Grow-with-Me Sizing and Styling reference section inthe front of the book provides many options for sizing cus-tomization. It also includes the necessary reference tools tomake substantive changes to a design like adding a tex-tural stitch pattern or colorwork, or adding any of severalpocket styles or a hood. Not only do boys love to be knittedfor, but there is an infinite number of ways to make a proj-ect perfect for its recipient. I hate hearing from knitters thattheir boys “will not wear anything they knit.” With someattention to detail, this can be overcome.

Kate Oates is the designer for Tot Toppers and When I Grow Up and the author of Knitting Clothes Kids Love.
